Sun Hunter SHADOW RUN General Information The Shadow Run is both the simplest and most dangerous training course that can be run without a golem. A flurry of continuous attacks is what the Sun Division holds in highest respect, and the course reflects that. The course itself is a simple tunnel, reached via portal. Within the tunnel await hundreds of weak, hungry shadowlings. Nothing to worry about on their own, but capable of overwhelming a Hunter through sheer numbers at the first moment of weakness. At the other end of the tunnel is another portal, leading back to the course observation booth.
If you fail: your character is KO'd, but there's always a senior hunter in the observation booth with enhanced bandages at the ready. They should reach you in time. Really. Trained and trusty professionals on-hand 24/7.
If you win: peen points and bragging rights to those who take out the greatest number of shadowlings and go the most turns without needing to attempt a recovery maneuver.
Mechanics You must get through 5 waves of attacks to make it through the tunnel. Simply roll for attack as you would in battle. If you miss, your character falters in their attacking and is overwhelmed by shadowlings. After 3 successful hits, you may use your weapon's charge attack.
Bonus Mechanics This bonus is consumable. The bonus in this course is in the form of "recoveries" ~ these are would-be missed attacks that are quickly recovered and turned into a successful hit. Basically, they can miss once and roll again for an extra try. If you keep consecutively missing, though, and run out of recoveries, it's lights out. These do not equal an automatic pass for a round, you still have to land a successful hit to proceed.
Trainees: 0 recovery Sun Trainees: 1 recovery Hunters: 1 recovery Sun Hunters: 2 recoveries

Over the course of the past week, Jack had had plenty of time to think: at work, on break, while jogging or practicing on a dummy, out on leave, and most especially when alone in his room. He always came to the same conclusion: nothing cleared the mind more than beating the s**t out of things.
(Maybe it would get the impulse to strangle out of him while he was at it.)
Normally getting people would be just fine, but after his streak of blind dates, Jack hoped to do this alone. The Sun Course was his only option.
A little before lunch, Jack stuck on a faded shirt and some gym shorts and made his way over to the lighthouse. Owain thrummed with excitement for action, doing his best to hide the near constant reproval he had been giving Jack as of late.

If Jack had thought he'd get alone time, he'd thought wrong. Chris was at the lighthouse already, wearing shorts and an old tank. He was trying to branch his training out beyond his usual exercises and spars. Challenging himself to other division's tasks seemed like a good way to do that.
He twisted his torso in a stretch, and startled when that put Jack in his line of sight. "Holy s**t how did you sneak up on me." He untwisted to face the man fully and then his face lit up. "Hey wait, I know you! You're Chel's friend. Jack?"

Jack scoffed to himself and hastily braced himself for conversation when he recognized first the voice and then the form. "Yeah. It's Chris Axten, right?"
Like he didn't have him marked down in Chel's file as both a relative and a pressure point.
"My condolences for being related to her," he could help but add with a wry smile. "You doing the Sun course too, then? I'm half hoping they include zombies now."

"I know right," he scrunched up his face, though his tone belied a bit of fondness. That probably summed Chel up pretty accurately, actually. "You've done this one before? It's only my second time, but it took me a few tries to get it right before. I'm kind of pumped just to beat s**t up though."
He seemed to get a delighted look like an older brother that had just discovered a way to ******** with their sibling. "Do you think we could beat Chel's best score?"

Having not been expecting this warm a greeting, Jack just sort of stood there for a few seconds looking mildly confused before going with it. "First time," he replied with a shake of his head, which reminded him--he pulled out a hairband from his pocket and pulled his hair back into a small ponytail. If he sucked just because he had hair in his face, that would have been embarrassing.
"'Beat s**t up' is the goal, yeah. What's Chel's best score?" Jack found himself getting curious; Chel did have a good arm if knocking out Ripley had said anything, and she was in Sun...But that didn't quite stifle his quiet impulse to win in this as well. That sounded like a good remedy to his weird mood at any rate: beat her at her game and then beat her in this.

Chris hung his head sadly. "158, she texted it to me yesterday," he mumbled. Saying it made it seem like an unobtainable goal. "She's a monster. She must be stopped." Beating Chel at being destructive was probably never going to happen for him. But he'd damn well try.
"It's a good goal to work towards, though, I guess." He smiled up at Jack. "Makes it a little more interesting than just getting the required rounds. That gets boring quick."

"158? Damn." Jack gave a low whistle, though what was more interesting to him was the fact that this happened the day before. Maybe Chel had taken the rejection harder than she let on. Or maybe he was being full of himself thinking so. (It was a nice thought nevertheless, believing he mattered enough to beat the s**t out of stuff for.) He motioned for the techs to open the portal for them and turned to Chris. "I'll worry about beating that later. Let's make it more interesting. Feel up to a bet?" Jack asked with a little smirk. "Guy with the most kills in a dice round streak gets...s**t, I dunno. Bragging rights and $75 or something?" Something simple and small. He found that making things a competition helped his performance.

A bet? That sounded more achievable than trying to beat Chel's score at least. Plus, being up 75 bucks wasn't a bad deal. He nodded. "Yeah, I can do that. I'm gonna kick your a** though."
He stepped through the portal, throwing a taunting smirk over his shoulder.medigel spoiler alert chris will not kick jack's a**.

He returned the smirk and summoned his weapon. "We'll see." It took a few seconds to adjust to the teeming darkness, but Jack welcomed it far more than he did the light. Combat with Owain's new form had been restricted to just the Sahara; he was eager to see how well he did with the lighter version. So far, it didn't disappoint. Jack carved a path ahead without another word. Chris hadn't realized what fighting with a bigger guard to Ava's gauntlet would be like. It allowed him to bash back shadows that got too close, rather than relying on just the blade to slash and hack. It was very nifty.
Ava mocked.
He looked over to jack and raised his brows. He'd expected competition, of course, but now he wasn't so sure he could win. "You're not half bad. For a lifer, that is." Status Wave: 1 Attack Dmg: 10 Total Shadowlings taken out: 10 Recoveries left: 0

Chris squinted at him. "You would play basketball. You're tall as ********. Do you even have to jump to reach the net?"
He slashed through a couple more shadows with a grunt. He had no idea who was in the lead at this point.Status Wave: 2 Attack Dmg: 5 Total Shadowlings taken out: 15 Recoveries left: 0

Jack snickered. "Of course," he replied like it was obvious. "The hoop's like ten feet up." But the momentary distraction was enough for him to miss the lunging shadows from the left. He staggered and tried to swipe them off, but more and more swarmed him until the next thing he knew, he was back at the beginning and having lights shined in his eyes. "Damn it." Well that was embarrassing. Status Wave: 2 Attack Dmg: 0 Total Shadowlings taken out: 14 Recoveries left: 0 DarkHeartedSorrow you can continue to roll for him without waiting for me! Chris whooped as Jack went down, because he was an a*****e. Of course, that was just enough distraction to send him down as well. He awoke at the beginning of the course and groaned.
