Couldn't you have been blue? This would be so much easier if you were blue, Set'al complained affectionately from atop his dragon, oiling away at his hide. Even though he was small for a bronze, there was still a lot of dragon to cover, and no particularly efficient way to do it. And, irritatingly, he tended to end up as oily as his bonded, which was why he always wore the same old pair of pants. No sense in ruining anything decent. I wouldn't be nearly as handsome, and we wouldn't have nearly as many opportunities for you to ignore, Pipith replied with a snort. If this is such a burden, maybe you should volunteer us for a candidate lesson. What, you really want a bunch of kids climbing all over you?Not on a regular basis, no, but I can think of worse things than being fawned over. It would be a nice change!Set'al thwacked him on the shoulder. See? The abuses I suffer! The bronze heaved a long-suffering sigh. They might fawn over you, too, you know, a tall dashing bronzerider all covered in oil. When this earned him a harder thwack, he amended, Or next time you could just wait to oil me until Cepheith's is around.Thwack.

Amelia and Sharath were out for a stroll in the afternoon heat, the rider astride her dragon as they surveyed their new home. It was such a large sprawling complex and with its open air planning, Amelia sometimes felt too exposed. One Wingleader had already introduced herself but, surprisingly, the bronzeriders hadn't really been introduced yet. It was at once amusing and a relief not to garner unwanted fawning and flirting - Amelia felt that her duty was to Sharath first and foremost, the males second. The gold tossed her head, great feet sinking into the soft ground to leave dragon footprints. The Queen spotted Set'al first, There is a bronzepair, Mine. You were thinking of them... The interest in the dragon's mindvoice drew Amelia's attention and she looked over to find the oiled up pair. She laughed, Are you mentioning them because they're potential political allies or because they're shiny from being so oiled up?Sharath lashed her tail in faux irritation, and arched her neck proudly, Why not both? We can look, can we not? I think we deserve some good looks. The dragon changed direction as Amelia rolled her eyes. Hailing the pair, Sharath trumpeted and drew alongside Pipith. Hello, I am Sharath. We have not been introduced yet. The gold's tone was warm and diplomatic, making Amelia smile - political ally first then, eye candy second. That was her girl. "Hey!~" Amelia called out, "I don't think I've seen you around before. We're newly settled. I am Amelia! Pleasure to meet you!" She waved before sliding off her gold's neck to fall gracefully to the ground. Stretching, she rolled her shoulders and peered up at the bronzerider. Clad in loose, cool clothing and mildy sunburned around the shoulders, it was clear she was from more Northern climes. She might not look fair and dainty but Amelia never thought she needed to. Thankfully Sharath was recently oiled, her skin pleasantly shining.

What was that for? I'm sure that she would enjoy the view, and she could oil Cepheith at the same- oh! Look, Mine! Mercifully, Set'al was spared the continuation of his dragon's thought, and his dragon in turn was spared another thwack. Teasing immediately forgotten, he arched his neck and curved his wings just so, showing off his magnificent, mostly-oiled hide. It wasn't perfect, having a modest scattering of scars thanks to Thread and battle, but in his unhumble opinion, that just made him that much more appealing. Good afternoon and well met, Sharath! He returned her greeting with a pleasant thrum. I am Pipith, and Mine is Set'al."Afternoon!" Set'al called, shoving at the base of Pipith's wing. Stop posing for two seconds and let me down, would you? Once the bronze obliged, he slid - rather literally, courtesy of all the oil - down his foreleg. And, thank Faranth, actually landed on his feet, which was half the reason behind the bright smile he flashed. "I'm Set'al, this is Pipith," he offered, and started to extend his hand...then thought better of it and wiped it on his trousers, but that didn't do much good. He chuckled and shrugged helplessly. "Well, that's useless. Sorry we're such a mess. Anything we can do for you?" Meeting the new goldrider while half-clothed and covered in oil wasn't awkward at all. Nope.

Amelia was amused as the male postured around the gold and Sharath, despite her business attitude, crooned a bit in approval. It definitely helped that Sharath was markedly bigger then this bronze, an unusual twist of chance. You have seen Threadfall... there are many here who are scarred. You must fly well, to avoid much marring."Don't worry, I'm not complaining," She grinned, indulging in a glance or two over his frame before turning her mind to more important matters, "Oh! This is Sharath. And, not really. We're just trying to meet people around the Weyr - we were just thinking how Trine's Bronzeriders have been difficult to pin down." The goldrider smiled, "I wanted to introduce myself and inform you up front I plan to take the competition for Weyrwoman seriously. To that end, I can't hope to make a difference unless I actually understand the people here." She turned a bit, gesturing for Set'al to join her, "Do you have a moment to tell me about yourself and Trine? I'd like to learn." Amelia smiled once more, curious as to where this conversation would go.

We flew in First Fall, and in many others since, Pipith said proudly, just happening to stretch out his forelegs and coincidentally offer for view that one of his forepaws was missing a digit...an injury not from Thread, but from another dragon, and one he was quite proud of, as it was the most dramatic of his assortment. Not complaining, that was- oh. Oh. The bronzerider flushed momentarily, but was quick to laugh. While not the sort to posture like his dragon, he wasn't particularly self-conscious, either. "Are we? I have to say I'm surprised, I'd've thought there'd be a line. If you were looking for one with rank, though, you're out of luck with us." Not self-deprecating, just a good-natured statement of fact. "Oh, right, the...competition." At least she was honest about it, he could appreciate that. "Sure, I've got time." Even if he hadn't, he would have spoken to her anyway and forgotten whatever else he was supposed to be doing. "We're not natives either, actually. We transferred in from Southern several turns ago, just before all the fuss about mystweed, so we've certainly seen our fair share of excitement." "That's the main thing to understand about Trine, I guess. A lot's happened in a pretty short span of time, we've got three Weyrs' worth of opinions about it all, and there's no telling what'll happen next. You really sure you want in on this mess?"

Sharath bobbed her head, impressed. First Fall was not a minor thing... to be so little scarred, especially considering the mess that crimson bore, it merited respect. When the forepaw was shown, she couldn't help but notice and lowered her head to sniff at the wound, eyes whirling yellow in concern momentarily. You miss a finger too! Do you feel it still? Mine says Miners who lose hands feel ghostpain... "I was half expecting one as well, truth be told," Amelia laughed, "It's actually refreshing to pick and choose and do things on my own terms. I'm not looking for rank, I'm looking for people... I've dealt quite a bit with what Rank wants since I Impressed." She frowned irately. At the question, she nodded, looking fondly at her bonded, "We're very sure. We came here from High Reaches for a chance to pursue our dream, to prove ourselves. Where else better to do that? Trine is actually looking at merit... every where else is more interested in who Rises first and all of the ridiculous drama that entails." She snorted, "I'd much prefer this, even if it's too sharding hot." She gestured at the Weyr before them, "So, what's your personal opinion? What's your take?"

Pipith curled his tail, his own eyes holding blue, so very pleased thst she had noticed his terrible wound. He might be small, but he was impressive in other ways! Sometimes, but it is not so bad, he answered, having quite forgotten by now how much he had complained to His in the beginning. A finger is a small sacrifice to make. You are so shaffing dramatic. If Amelia hadn't been present, Set'al would have rolled his eyes. "High Reaches? That's quite the climate change." "My take? The competition's all well and good, but if it weren't for everything that's happened, there wouldn't be a competition at all. If it were just Cepheith, I think they would have stuck with tradition and let her succeed, but with Suunath around..." He shook his head. "I don't think Trine or the folk from Malvren would want to be ruled by a Benden Queen just because she Rose before ours. And honestly, I think you should be careful. After everything that's happened, not everyone will take kindly to an outsider coming in wanting to lead."

Sharath rumbled thoughtfully, drawing back to regard the bronze thoughtfully. She tilted her head from side to side before decided she actually liked this bronze, It is good you are so willing to sacrifice for the Weyr. If I were Senior, would you still be willing? It was asked coyly, the gold taking the moment to pose a bit too, a fluttering of wings to show her buttery hide, sleek neck. Amelia nodded, "I don't expect to just waltz in and take the Weyr. I fully expect to earn the position." She probably could, if she and Sharath really wanted to, but that wasn't the point, "We transferred here because such customs lead to an... altercation. A younger Gold rose before Sharath to take the Senior rank and, well, the rider wasn't much appreciated." She sighed, "Has there been much tension among the Goldriders here? Has anyone shown leadership?" There was some apprehension in her voice, a comment to her negative experience with other ranking riders.

I will always serve my Weyr, was Pipith's own coy reply as he admired the new gold. She was pleasing to look at, yes, and she was gold, so would have had his attention regardless. She would have a long way to go to surpass Cepheith as his favorite, however, if such a thing was even possible...but Sharath didn't necessarily need to know that. "What I mean is, Trine is different. It's not just about earning the position. A lot's happened to the people here, we've all fought more than Thread, and we might have to again. Sorry, I'm not...I don't mean to sound so grim, especially when we've just met, but you asked, so. Just fair warning." "Tension? Not that I know of." Set'al leaned against his dragon, considering how much he should say and how to say it. "Narisa and Kindra are friends, they share a weyr actually. As for the rest, I...I'm not a good person to ask. Narisa's my friend, and Kindra's hers." There was a slight hesitation at 'friend,' as she was definitely more than that, but it was still a bit complicated.

Sharath noticed the neutral response and whuffed, turning her head away to regard her rider. "So... because I haven't been through the same tumultuous experiences, your opinion is that people will find fault and lack an affinity with me?" She asked earnestly, thoughful. That was a complication she hadn't expected. They'd been sheltered from the tumult of the revolution... and as much as she wanted to help, do something it might not be enough. She frowned. Sharath, however, bugled and tossed her head, speaking privately to Amelia, Don't listen to him, Mine. It will be enough. Her tone was so confident and sure, Amelia couldn't help but smile. "Thank you for the warning. They do?" She blinked, finding it hard to imagine sharing space with a fellow goldrider. His response drew a sigh from Amelia, she'd managed to find someone who was innately biased towards their positions. "I see... I can't ask you condemn or laud a friend in such a position. I just hope," Here Amelia turned serious, her tone authoritative and the iron will visible, "That you know the difference between what makes a friend and what makes a leader." She cleared her throat and let the air fall away, "In the meantime, is there anything I can help with? I've been doing things here and there but I do not know if there's a concerted effort or need anywhere." Amelia smiled. Sharath rumbled to Amelia once more, Well done Mine! That was very good! She turned back to Pipith and crooned at him.

"Most likely, yes. Some have coped better than others, but it was traumatic, to say the very least, and just because it's quiet now doesn't mean that it's over. Transferring here, you're signing up for war, sooner or later." Set'al looked away and rubbed the back of his head with an oily hand. "I bashed another rider in the head with a rock, knocked her out cold because she tried to knife me, and it was just dumb luck on my part that she didn't. Most everyone's got stories like that, plenty of them worse." "The qualities of a friend and of a leader are not necessarily mutually exclusive," he said, his own tone remaining neutral as his gaze came back to the goldrider. "But what I do or don't know is of little importance. One thing I do know for sure about that decision, whenever it happens, is that it won't involve me." "We need help with everything everywhere, more or less. Pick what you're best at and go for it, or check with Narisa. She'll have a better idea where you might be needed. Pipith echoed Sharath's croon, still pleased by her presence even if she wasn't ever going to be his Most Favorite. Yours makes Mine very serious, he noted, bemused.

Amelia shook her head, frowning, "I hadn't considered that... was the violence really that great? I did not receive much in the way of detail in the reports that filtered through - the other Weyrs are more concerned about protecting their own then helping quell the revolution..." She pursed her lips. Really, the Weyr needed to heal and that would take time, and possibly more fighting from the sounds of it. "Narisa? I will keep that in mind. Thank-you." Sharath cocked her head to the side and lashed her tail, As does yours... At Amelia's words, the gold decided the conversation was over and as thanks for the conversation, she nosed Pipith's shoulder playfully before dipping a shoulder to collect her rider. Thank you. You have been very informative, Set'al. The gold address the rider directly as Amelia climbed up. "Sorry to bother you! If you have any other ideas or comments, let me know?" Meepfur Goodness, Amelia's all 'well crap, this is complicated' now xD hopefully Set'al doesn't think she's a brat lol orz

"That and worse. Suffice to say that a lot of the scars you'll see around here aren't from Thread." Interesting to know how little the other Weyrs knew or understood about hat had happened, and offputting to realize that they hadn't bothered to obtain the information. Set'al blinked at the gold when she addressed him, mildly surprised to be spoken to by a dragon he'd only just met. "You're welcome." "Not a bother at all," he assured them, the smile he usually wore returning as he nudged his dragon to be let back up as well, so that he could finish his afternoon task. He turned away briefly to climb onto Pipith's neck, offering a glimpse of two long, mercifully shallow wher-claw scars. "If you need anything else, we'll be around." It was an honor to meet you, Sharath, Pipith ended smoothly, with another friendly thrum. Mine speaks truly. He always does. If you need anything, we will help you if we can.SkieBorne Nah, not a brat! Just under-informed.
