If there was one thing Re'ka loved it was excitement and these new arrivals with their cute little dragons had provided plenty so far, even during the period they'd all been kept shut up in the infirmary. All in all she was pretty glad they were staying and Pycath firmly agreed, he could see plenty of uses for their miniature greens and blues with a gold to breed more of them. While the bronzes and browns weren't exceptional in that way the curious brown was still keen to get to know them, to find out more about the time they had come from and to marvel at their no doubt weird ways and beliefs.

So it was out of mutual nosiness that the pair volunteered to mentor one of the pairs, and so it was that around the middle of the day Pycath called out across the Weyrbowl on general broadcast;

Re'ka - bedecked in tight black hose and a blood red doublet with a plunging neckline - had done just that. She'd brought a rug to sit on too and was currently sitting on it with her legs stretched out comfortably as she started to fetch items of of the basket that sat beside her.

Pycath lounged nearby, his sleek form relaxed as he scanned the skies for a tiny shiny headed their way.

The weyr they had been assigned was nothing spectacular. Yet, it was a piece of familiarity amongst a rather trying time. Ra’fe leaned against Banneth, half meditating, half communing with his bronze. So many things had changed and he could see both for the better and for the worse.

There was women amongst their first wing, not a lot but still, the value of skill over shinny hide had been something he had wished for. Yet, ten turns bonded and over twenty turns of training, he was back down to a green ear novice to everyone. It was frustrating.

Banneth stirred, lifting his head at the greeting. The rather loud and exuberant greeting. The bronze shifted and slowly stood, dislodging his rider. He turned to his rider, pleased to move onwards and to have an excuse to make his rider socialized.

Ra’fe stirred slightly and opened an eye before sighing. He had not been looking forward to being assigned a mentor and he could read between the lines of Ban’s polite talk. He stood carefully, tugging his hair back in its customary tail and slipped the silver hair clasp up, keeping it in place. He buckled his sword, checked the rest of his blades in there various hiding places before swinging up in Banneth’s saddle.

Banneth shifted, making sure his rider was secure before running out of the weyr and launching off, flying to the lake.

Pycath replied, brushing past Banneth's mind like something moving under the water.

Indeed it wasn't long before Re'ka and Pycath spotted the shape of a ridiculously small bronze heading towards them; Re'ka pulled the stopper out of a jug of ale with her teeth and poured herself a mug.

Pycath replied to his rider with a mental smirk at the notion.

Re'ka smirked too. Hopefully that wouldn't need to happen though, she'd much rather get on with him.

Banneth pulled into a neat dive as he saw the brown and pulled up, skimming the cool water of the lake before landing neatly and settling down, letting his rider dismount. he greeted, and tucked his wings back, settling in a relaxed pose.

Ra’fe fell into a relaxed military stance, looking up at his mentor. He noted her gender, rather easily on display, and dismissed it. Instead he noted her musculature and height. He asked dryly.

Banneth gave a displeased noise at this lapse in etiquette.

Ra’fe gave a mental sigh and moved to the rider, briskly and smooth, before offering his hand. “Ra’fe,” he offered simply, knowing that they already knew who Banneth was.

Banneth gave an annoyed noise, mentally chastising his rider.

Re'ka - who had got to her feet - looked Ra'fe up and down or at least down and further down. After a moment of surprise at being addressed directly by his dragon she grinned at him in amiable fashion and clasped his hand firmly in her own huge paw, which was calloused from heavy use of her blade. "Good to meet you Ra'fe, and you Banneth; name's Re'ka, Second Wing. Welcome to the future, I guess? How're you finding it so far? Oh, sit down," she gestured at the rug, "I brought along lunch." Hopefully it was the sort of thing 4th passers liked; slices of pie full of meat and tuber, decent fresh bread, cheese, and a couple of apples from the winter stores. Oh, and the ale of course but that was a given.

Pycath replied, tilting his head curiously to the side as he gave the bronze a thorough once over. that much. It would be like having cats grow to be as big as runners.> Not quite but he felt the exaggeration was fair enough, he was pretty sure he was as big as or bigger than the gold they'd brought which was at once surreal and pretty cool.

“I have to admit, it is a pleasure to shake hands with a rider who knows how to weld a blade.” Ra’fe replied, shaking the offer hand with his own well calloused hand. “It is, different. More progressive for one.” He knelt, hands set on his thighs, thoughtful. “It will be nice to work with like-minded people.”

Banneth replied, tone slightly dry at his distaste for such a rude question. Knowledge was all well and good and the brown was merely trying to broaden his horizons.

"Good to know I don't have to teach you about that at least," Re'ka countered, still grinning as she sat down and proffered a mug and the jug of weak ale to Ra'fe. "Glad you approve, might have had to test your skills right off otherwise, but there's a lot of work still needs doing around here. We'll do it though, you can expect to see women Weyrleaders in your lifetime friend!... Oh, well here I mean," she gave a short laugh, "already got them in Igen and Telgar right now." It was a bit tempting to transfer to one of those Weyrs sometimes but her name wouldn't shine as brightly through history if she achieved greatness where it was easy for women.

Pycath bobbed his head, bird-like, and made a rumbling thoughtful noise. He chose to ignore the bronze's tone. want to know?> He was here to mentor Banneth as much as Re'ka was to mentor Ra'fe, or so he felt at any rate.

Ra’fe accepted the mug and jug, pouring himself a drink before setting it to the side. “Igen was progressive in my own time, it is not terribly surprising to hear they have a women weyrleader, yet, it is still an achievement.” He sipped the ale, relaxing slightly. “Was there a reason for the quarantine?” He asked, looking at Re’ka.

Banneth rumbled, wrapping his rider in warmth at the shared topic. The quarantine period had lingered as to why.

"Mmh," said Re'ka, who was taking a drink. A frown furrowed her brow as she swallowed and she shrugged; "I'm not sure, I'm not privy to things like that.... Could just be that they wanted to keep you all locked up until On'ya decided whether or not to ask you to stay."

Pycath meanwhile was digging through his rider's memories and thinking hard. he said to Banneth after a brief pause,

"Oh yea, probably." Re'ka nodded to her dragon's suggestion; having not been there at the time she could never really understand how the people who'd lived through the dragonplague felt about it but the scars it had left were plain to see. "It happened about ten turns ago," she began, taking another sip of her drink and waving Ra'fe towards the food. "Nobody really agrees how it started or were it came from but the long and the short of it is that it killed probably more than half of all the dragonkin in all the Weyrs of Pern other than Ista, it never made it there. The Weyrs have been struggling to recover ever since, and our numbers still aren't what they should be for the start of a Pass."
PostPosted: Thu Sep 25, 2014 3:24 pm

Banneth echoed, looping his rider into subject and sent his unease down their link. A plague that had affected dragon kin? He shuddered, dwell on that rather unpleasant fact. Perhaps it was time for a subject change.

On’ya was a formable women, and certainly not one that Ra’fe cared to anger. “Ten turns ago… it did not give you much time to repopulate your weyr before threadfall.” A plague explained quite a bit of things that had lingered as not right. The quarantine had rung an alarm bell. The open weyrs. He drew out one of his concealed blades, this one from his wrist sheaf, and started to cut the loaf of bread into manageable pieces. “What did Ista do?”

Pycath replied, he snorted, The brown gave a feeling of a shrug.

"Not a lot," Re'ka agreed with a shrug. She'd been young when it happened and far from Weyrs but she had felt its effects, for the better actually. If there had been riders enough to keep the peace then she and her family might still be Holdless bandits themselves right now, struggling to survive in the new Pass.

"Ista did the only thing it could," Re'ka continued with a shrug, "it closed its skies. Plenty of people hate them for that but what were they meant to do? Let the sickness reach them too? Because they closed off, when it was all over they were able to send two junior golds out to Weyrs that lost all of their golds and they transferred out plenty of others too. I don't get why anyone's bitter about how they chose to act, only sensible thing they could have done so far as I can see."

Banneth replied, warmth seeking into his tones at the remembrance. And he had been a part of it, they had never rose in ranks but it had simply been.

“People rarely see reason when it affects them personality. Ista choose to isolate themselves, everyone effected, who lost a partner, a lover, wanted someone to blame and you can’t blame sky.” Ra’fe took a bite of bread, tearing a piece off and chewed. Hmm delicious.

the brown snorted. Did he want it? He wasn't sure, there were a lot of swirling plans in his head and some of them would benefit from taking that prestigious step upward. Up to first wing, chosen to be a wingsecond for say a third wing or second, then moving up to wingleader, and eventually Weyrleader.... Or something to that effect, probably, maybe; he was a flexible fellow after all and would make the best of whatever came his way.

"Yeah, true," Re'ka shrugged her wide shoulders, indicating that she still thought it was pretty dumb. "Anyway," she waved her cup in the air vaguely, "so what I need to teach you about is what you'll need to learn in order to get into one of our wings. Pycath told Banneth about them, so which do you think is a fit for you? I can probably help you work towards most of them but if you were after something like...." she waved her cup again; "say Third-Two I'd probably suggest a different mentor for you, I can teach you all the knowledge you need but not all the skills El'zor wants in his riders.... Yeah, if it's not Third-Two or Fifth-One I should be fine though. Don't ask me about bookkeeping, seriously."
PostPosted: Thu Sep 25, 2014 4:14 pm

Banneth replied and considered the placement. Did they want first wing? Ra’fe was good with his sword. He knew his worked hard and would not care to live on the weyr’s donations for long.

“Bookkeeping has it uses, but no. I don’t think that would be a good fit.” He would be bored in such a wing and was tired of being a courier, escort. Ra’fe started and sent a wave of appreciation as the bronze handed over the information. “Wing two or up,” he said finally. He certainly didn’t care to be sulking around or dealing with long cool or cooling bodies.

Pycath chuckled with a sinuous feeling of something that was smooth and yet possessing hidden teeth. he replied,

Re'ka shrugged again. "Well I like honesty better than false modesty; okay, I'll teach you what it takes to make it in second.... I don't know what they'll make of a pocket sized bronze but at least you've got a d**k, and that's a big help if you want to penetrate first wing's ranks." The large woman grinned then and bit into a slice of pie, fully aware of what she had just said and watching Ra'fe's face carefully to see how he would react.
