While Lydia normally busied herself almost every single day with her own peculiar hobby of stalking some of the more interesting island mates and recording useful information on each, today she finally gave in to Rorric's constant chirping about how while knowledge was obviously important, so was becoming more physically able. Normally, she was able to cheerfully brush off his yammering, or distract him away from it, it seemed that he was becoming much more stubborn. Something to do with the whole infected hunters thing. He had worried about her while they had all been trapped in the dark, and had felt quite helpless, even though she had handled the situation (or so she believed at least) with a fairly level head! He wanted to be able to help her, however, and he longed to be used again. It had been such a long time, and she got the sense that he...well, hungered for something, for the lack of a better word. So, she had texted Arorangi earlier that day (surely he would be happy to spar with her!) setting up a time for them to meet at the training field. She arrived only a couple of minutes late, dressed rather lightly for a change in a polka dot top, short shorts, and thigh high stockings coupled with a pair of laceless blue and white sneakers. kuroopu he can already be there or just arrive or whatever idc

Arorangi had been concerned about Lydia and Oliver's states since the mission, and considering the latter of the pair had wound up in the infirmary (then again, Oliver's constitution was somewhat lower than most, at least for now), he had been only too worried about whether Lydia had made a bed for herself there as well.
Thankfully, this seemed not to be the case, as he soon discovered, and Arorangi was quite grateful for modern technology.
Lydia's question about sparring had been easy to answer, and soon Arorangi was making his way down to the training field to meet her. When he got there, he saw that she was already there, and he made a beeline for her, reaching out to wrap her in a quick hug.
"Aroha, how are you?" he asked, giving her a quick once over, his large hands on her thin shoulders. "Are you feeling well?"

Hugs from Arorangi were like the greatest gift he could give, and she got one every time she saw him! She was getting more than used to the way he squished the breath right out of her, no matter the size or intensity of the hug, and she always let out a long titter of a laugh, doing her best to hug in him return, before she was set back down. She might have also gotten a little squeeze of his bicep before untangling her arms from around him, but who was really to blame her? They were exquisite! "I am feeling great! Just fantastic! Especially now that you are here~" She pressed her lips together as if to try and hold back a wide grin, a hand coming up to pat the top of Aro's hand that was on her shoulder. "Rorric has been nattering on and on and on for daaaaaays, though." She explained to him, huffing out a sigh that blew the bangs right out of her eyes for a just a moment before they flopped back down again. "He says that I need to learn to take care of myself, that I have not practiced enough on how to use him properly. That I could get myself hurt next time we go on a mission if I don't make more of an effort sooooo..." She raised her arms out to either side of her. "Here I am! And here you are! So, shall we begin?" She asked, bouncing on her heels excitedly. One of her arms flopped back to her side, but her other stayed out as a golden bracelet adorned with intricate feather ornaments began to glow a hot orange red, reforming into the cat o' nine tails whip that soon rested in her hand.

Arorangi was nothing if not a big hugger, because hugging was important. When one couldn't think of any words to say, hugs could be substituted just as easily, and for just as much warmth and importance as words. Sometimes it was more about just feeling than actually saying, which was always why he tried to greet people he knew and liked with such enthusiastic hellos.
Oblivious as always, he didn't notice her squeezing his arm, assuming it was just Lydia being Lydia, and gave her a relieved smile. "I am glad to hear that you are well, aroha," he told her with a nod. "I was worried that you would be having a rough time; it seems like everyone is having a rough time lately, especially after the mission," he added, in a slightly sad tone of voice.
But Lydia seemed as good-natured and cheerful as ever, and this was very reassuring to Arorangi, who beamed at her in pleasure. "Yes, let us begin! Ori as well has kept telling me that we are in need of more spars to expand my knowledge of how to defend myself, so we will both benefit from this exercise!"
He jogged back a little, giving Lydia's whip a nod and a grin, Arorangi's own spear appearing with a small glow of blue light in his left hand. He spun it around and adjusted his footing, taking a breath.
"All right, aroha!" he called to her. "Let us begin!'

"Oh goodness no, I have been through much worse than all of that, just you trust me!" She giggle snorted, stance widening and knees bending as she held her whip in a two handed grip and began to sway side to side. Apparently that was her "ready" stance. "Now, had you been torn apart in front of my eyes or smothered to death by poisonous spider webs...well now, that might have been a problem!" The lopsided grin she gave him seemed completely out of place with her words, though inwardly even the thought of losing Aro in some horrible accident like she had lost so many new friends in wonderpark brought a stab of pain to her heart. She gave his spear a bright look with wide blinking eyes filled with awe. It was so cool! Of course, she had to mentally reassure Rorric that he was just as cool, if not cooler, and most definitely hotter (because, well...Firebird). "Okay okay, I got this!" And she did, because she had used her weapon all of maybe two times before and really, what was difficult about mastering a whip? Even one of many tails like her own? Darting forward, she raised the weapon in one hand overhead, and brought it down in a sharp crack. HP: 40 Damage: 7

Arorangi didn't like to hear that Lydia had been through worse than what had happened at the mission; but she was still smiling, and she seemed perfectly at ease. Of course, she could have just been very good at hiding any underlying emotions, but Arorangi decided to give her the benefit of the doubt for now.
"Oh, aroha, do not worry," he said quickly, lips quirking upwards into a small smile at her words. "I will not let anything happen to myself so long as you are near! And I do not wish to cause you any pain, so as long as we are friends, sweetheart, I will not let anything happen to you or me!"
Shifting the spear a little, Arorangi readjusted his footing just as Lydia lunged towards him, snapping her whip. The tails of the weapon caught him around his upper arm, a stinging sensation reverberating from his shoulders down to the tips of his fingers.
"You are very good already, aroha!" he said, looking pleased. The spear was spun around in a circle and Arorangi flipped it sideways and sliced through the air toward her, aiming for her side instead of jabbing the weapon straight at her.
"Tell me more about yourself," he said, smiling. "I wish to know more about you."

Lydia's face brightened with every word that Arorangi spoke, though she knew that nobody should ever make such promises, because these were ones that they could not hope to keep. Maybe it was just good luck that had kept her alive so far, bringing her back from the brink again and again. But good luck always ran out, right? Like the cats she so often liked to wear on her clothing, she could not possibly have more than nine lives, and she was certain that over half of those were already used up. So, as much as she wanted to believe that what Aro said was true, as much as she wanted to cling on to a hope that she and he would always make it through okay, so that they could remain as they were right now. At his compliment on her whip work, she laughed and struck a little pose. "Oh but of course. Didn't I tell you that I was actually a dominatrix before I woke up here? That cryptozoology mumbo jumbo was just a cover story!" She laughed again, but soon let out a small yelp instead as his spear came striking out at her. She attempted to turn and dodge, but it still stabbed into her side, scraping against his Fear shield and eliciting a small sting of pain. She was all smiles again shortly afterwards, brushing it off like it was nothing was, after all, her specialty. "Hrmmmm, something about my self....." She considered his question while looking for an opening to strike back with. "Well, I guess I can tell you now that I wasn't really a dominatrix." She grinned, a bit cheekily this time, before lashing out towards one of his legs with her whip. "BUT! I am, however, an aries! Although I've always thought that I would make a better gemini~" HP: 34 Damage: 3

The good thing about Arorangi was that he meant what he said about things; and when he promised things, they were never made with empty thoughts or empty meanings. Even if they couldn't be entirely fulfilled, he would at least make the necessary effort.
So when he said he was going to try and protect Lydia - and when he'd said he was going to protect Oliver as well - he meant it, as much as he could mean it on a place like Deus.
Arorangi let out a laugh. "Oh, I am glad to know that you are telling me the truth now!" he called as he darted backwards, spinning the scythe in his hand. He twisted around and regained his footing quickly (well, as quickly as one could while wearing sandals). "I'll have you know, then, that I am actually a secret agent for the New Zealand police!"
Her whip cracked across his leg, and Arorangi stumbled a little, pivoting to face her again hastily.
"I am not sure what I am, really," he said cheerfully. "But I do know that I love to swim, so whatever the sign that is for fish should be for me! Is there a fish sign? I am unfamiliar with most of that sort of thing, I must admit, but it is very interesting!"

Her eyes widened behind her red rimmed glasses, her mouth falling slightly agape. "Seriously?" She might have been joking about the dominatrix thing, but she was unsure whether or not Arorangi was doing the same. Still, she was soon flashing him another of her tooth filled smiles, taking a break from slapping at him with her whip. "I could probably tell you, if you gave me your birthday!" She chirped, half watching him in case he might strike out at her with his spear again, half focusing on making conversation instead. "But yes, there are three water signs. Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Pisces are the fish." She nodded, and then continued. "Actually, that sign suits you!" She nodded once, firmly, her curls bobbing around her face, before she swiveled on her feet and gave another lash with her whip. HP: 34 Damage: 6

He stared at her for a moment before realizing what she was asking about. "Oh, aroha, no," he said, laughing uproariously. "You are very cute when you are surprised, I am not a secret agent, I would have been terrible at that sort of thing. I am too loud and too friendly," Arorangi added, grinning at her. "I leave that sort of thing to others!"
He twisted the spear around again and took a step back, readjusting his footing as Lydia's whip snapped towards him. Arorangi gave a slight hiss of surprise - she was very good at this, he could tell that she had been practicing, or maybe she was just confident - and gave her a thumbs up of approval.
"I was born in June," he said brightly. "June twenty-third. I am not sure what exactly that sign would be..."

"Oh! Oh right!" She laughed. "Oh my I am so silly sometimes." She shook her head, curls whipping into her face as she continued to giggle. "Of course you were just kidding!" She let out a happy sigh, and reached up to remove some of the strands of her own hair that had managed to get caught at the corner of her mouth as she had been talking and shaking her head and laughing. "Oh but June 23rd! Hrmmmmm..." Her face scrunched up in thought, her free hand coming up to grip at the tails on her whip for a moment, taking another pause in their friendly little spar. "I believe that is actually Cancer! Still a water sign, which is fitting." She grinned, and then, without warning, she lashed out at him again. This was actually quite fun! Though she had to wonder if Arorangi might be holding back just a little. HP: 34 Damage: 4

"Silly is good," said Arorangi, beaming at Lydia. "Silly implies that you are still able to have fun and act on childish whims, which I think several people have forgotten about as they grow older. But I am glad to know that you are able to continue being silly and continue having whims, because it is very sweet."
The tail ends of her whips managed to graze his side, Arorangi twisting a little to get out of full reach of them. Ori was making sounds of sadness that his owner was not doing so well, but Arorangi merely brushed them aside, because he was doing his best and that was all that mattered, really.
"Water is a good sign for me, yes," he said, smiling. "I have always loved the water, especially the ocean, as you know. But I have loved places in general, it is great fun to travel and to see new places and to meet new people - like you," Arorangi added brightly. The spear lashed out, catching her across the ankle.

Arorangi only ever seemed to have nice things to say, and he was so insightful at times! It was such a difference, being around him in comparison to so many of the others on the island, those who were cold or jaded or angry or perhaps feeling just a little bit lost. At times she didn't even know how to respond! A smile and a thank you just didn't seem to be enough to show how much she appreciated his endless optimism and good cheer. But sometimes it confused her as well. Being called sweetheart (and not in a derogatory or sexist way), being told she was beautiful or cute or pretty (how he saw past the mismatched layers of clothing or messy hair or too large eyes to anything attractive was beyond her), it all brought a fierce blush to her face. He was just being nice, she knew. It was all a part of his exuberant charm! But it still gave her butterflies in her stomach to hear. It still sometimes gave her...well, hope! She'd never had a boyfriend. Hell, she'd never even been kissed! Though at her age, while that should have probably been embarrassing, it was always something that she had brushed off, and she had focused on her work instead. That didn't mean she never felt lonely, however, or sorry for herself on occasion, if only just for a little bit. But those were probably matters best left for some other time, because right now, she was totally on a roll with this whipping stuff! "Awwwww, you know I'm very happy to have met you too, Arorangi!" She replied with a large grin that stretched across glowing red cheeks. She took a step forward, intent on swinging her whip above her head in some fancy, Indiana Jones fancy-pants style that likely only really worked with a long bull whip and not a cat o' nine tails. Until Arorangi caught her on on the ankle with his spear of course. It hadn't hurt a lot, but it was enough to trip her up, so that when she tried to lash out at him again, she was only able to graze him with a single tail of her multi-tailed whip. Arorangi was not really one of those people who only saw the good and not the bad; but he much preferred to talk of the good rather than the bad, or at least try and focus on the positives, rather than the negatives, because life was much easier to bear when not focusing entirely on the bad.
As for calling her by affectionate nicknames, it was half because that was who he was, and half because he genuinely meant whatever he said. Lydia was pretty and she was sweet, and his expressions of appreciation were best suited for gentle honesty, rather than callous catcalling or disrespectful comments.
Lydia's whip grazed his side again, and Arorangi shifted, pivoted, and tried again, readjusting his hold on his spear so that he could lunge towards her, aiming for her midsection to try and block her next attack. "I am glad to hear that you are glad to meet me," he said, and there was a fondness in his voice, a pleased expression in his eyes. "You are definitely a person I consider myself to be close to here on the island, I only hope we can become better friends in the future."

"Of course I am glad to have met you." She giggled, still blushing though the red stain had began to taper off to more of a dusky pink. When he pivoted and thrust, she was caught off guard for a second time, and instead of attempting to strike out at him again, she attempted to jump back. Which just ended up becoming a stumbling sort of flailing as she fought to not fall down. When she managed to straighten up again, she reached up to swipe away some hair that had fallen in front of her eyes. "Ah yes, well, in that case you'd better tell me something about you now!" She grinned, getting back into a somewhat ready looking position once more, her body side to side and her knees bent as she narrowed her eyes at him, searching for her opening. HP: 33 Damage: 0
