To be fair, her uncle had agreed upon giving her some free time letting her go wander about the town for a bit. He had just failed to set down any sort of guidelines as to where she could and could not go...and in turn, Xiu had found it unnecessary to note that she was more than likely going to brave venturing into the more unsavoury places of town. Although she was quite aware of the gap between the classes and had heard a great deal about it, actually witnessing it with her own eyes was a whole different matter altogether.

Despite--or perhaps, in part, because of--the hooded cloak that she chose to wore, Xiu's status was immediately obvious to anyone who had two eyes and half a brain. She carried herself with a straight back and an air of confidence that had been instilled in her as a child, taking quick but dainty steps as she turned in from the bigger street and made her way through a dark and damp alleyway. As it was immediately obvious that she was a poorly-concealed noble, it was also inevitable that by running through such shady places, she'd attract some unwanted attention.

Which, of course, soon became the problem at hand. As she made her way down another alleyway, Xiu was vaguely aware of the sound of footsteps behind her. Lips pressing into a thin line, she forced herself to move faster in an effort to lose the stranger tailing her, but the footsteps only became faster--and louder--in turn. They were getting closer.

So she did the first thing that came to mind. As soon as she heard the stranger come up right behind her, she whirled around and blindly swung her fist straight out, her knuckles colliding solidly with a bony jaw. Spinning back around, Xiu broke into a sprint as she frantically weaved through the various pathways in an attempt to lose her pursuer.

It had been awhile since he had been in this area. There was almost a sense of nostalgia to the dank and dirty streets really. He didn't miss it though. Not really. He didn't miss starving on a near daily basis for certain.

As he rounded around a corner, he caught sight of a cloaked figure being chased by another. Nothing new there too. Normally, he wouldn't have gotten involved. But he was military now. He might not have been a part of the Garrison, who would deal with this sort of thing, he still felt some sense of obligation as a part of the Survey Corps.

With a sigh, he fired out the wires of his 3dmg to zoom on towards the two. As he zoomed on close to the one giving chase, he attempted to kick him to the ground.

Panting heavily, Xiu reached the corner just in time to hear the sound of whizzing wires and a solid thunk of hooks being sent into the wall of the building right above her head. Pivoting on her heel, she turned just in time to see the soldier's boot collide with her pursuer's stomach. The man let out a sharp, pained gasp as he staggered backwards, hitting the ground none-too-gracefully.

From there, he immediately began to crawl backwards in an effort to distance himself from the uniformed figured, suddenly put on edge upon being confronted by a soldier. Muttering a number of inaudible excuses, he struggled to scramble up onto his feet, stumbling slightly before he turned and rushed away.

After a beat of silence--and once she was sure it was safe--Xiu set a hand over her chest and let out a little sigh of relief. "Thank you."

When the man scampered off after taking the hit, Shun let out a light scoff before straightening up. He turned towards the cloaked one, getting a better look at the girl he had just helped out. Now that he had a better look, he could see that she was someone who lived a more privileged life. Perhaps a noble, but that didn't seem likely to him. She could just be the daughter of some rich merchant.

"Don't you know better than to walk around the slums looking like a rich kid?" he asked lowly.

She ducked her head a little at what she perceived to be a light scolding, having the decency to look ashamed. "I, ah--I'm sorry. I didn't think that I stuck out so obviously." That wasn't to say that she believed her cloak had magical qualities, but she had at least assumed that by covering herself up, she would make herself a little more inconspicuous.

But apparently not, considering both this soldier and that other man had picked up rather quickly that she wasn't from around here.

Feeling more at ease now that she was in the presence of a soldier, Xiu's lips curved upwards into a faint smile. "What gave it away?" ...She needed to know for future reference.

"Wearing a cloak like that in broad daylight usually means you're trying to hide something. It's also a nicely woven cloak for that matter. The way your carry yourself is also another matter," Shun scoffed.

Xiu concluded that a lot of things had given her away, judging by the man's list. Rather than seeming put off by his frank manner of speaking though, the girl simply laughed and sheepishly threw back her hood. "All things that I'll have to keep in mind for the future, I suppose." Because yes, there was always a next time.

It wasn't until then that she actually caught a good glimpse at the male's uniform. Although she had initially assumed that he was a part of the Garrison, Xiu was instead surprised to be met with an emblem of wings rather than roses. Staring at his coat for a moment, her pink-eyed gaze then flickered up to his face.

"I didn't think I'd see someone part of the Survey Corps around these parts," She confessed, "Though I'm definitely grateful that you were around. Umm..." Now that she thought about it, she would like to thank him for his help somehow.

"Oh! Have you had lunch yet?"

"If you really must hang around the slums, at least look like you belong here," he stated gruffly. Shaking his head, he folded his arms over his chest, then added, "I'm not on patrol, if that's what you were wondering."

Shun really just happened to be in the area.

The next question, though, caught him off guard.

"..No?"

Unfortunately, Xiu apparently wasn't at all aware of how she could dress in a way where she wouldn't stick out, but ended up turning her attention to others matters for the time being. Namely, the fact that he hadn't had lunch yet, and that she still needed to thank him.

"There's a lovely cafe just a little ways away," She chirped, folding her hands together in front of herself, "I'd like to thank you for helping me out there, and I'm feeling a little peckish myself. Would you possibly care to join me?"

Shun may not be starving all the time nowadays but he still wasn't about to turn down a free meal if offered. Military rations weren't always the best tasting things anyway. He didn't complain about it. It was still food. But something nicer on the pallet would be welcome.

"Very well."

"Excellent," The girl chirped, brightening at the fact that he had accepted her offer, "This way, then."

Despite the fact she knew it now to do little good, Xiu threw her hood back over her head anyways before making her way through the buildings to reach the main street. Glancing over her shoulder to make sure that Shun was following, she offered him a friendly smile. "I just realized I didn't introduce myself. I'm Xiuying! I'm from the capital, but I decided to take a trip and accompany my uncle out here for a few days."

Shun began to follow along, though he raised an eyebrow as Xiu introduced herself.

"Shun. Now why the hell would you hang around a slum if you're from the Capital of all places?

Shun, huh? Giving a little nod to herself, Xiu found his question startling a small laugh from her. It wasn't a surprising question, though. "Well, despite the saying...I don't really think ignorance is bliss. I've heard plenty of things about the power imbalance within the walls, but never really got the opportunity to take a look myself..."

Trailing off, she gave a little grimace. "It's not something that the people from the capital like to even acknowledge, nevermind speak about."

"Doesn't surprise me. If they did, maybe places like that won't be as much of a shithole," Shun grunted lowly with a shrug. He shook his head.

"There really isn't much to see there, though."
