It had been a strange yet kind offering at a very awkward and stressful time, and Melvin wasn't sure why it was even given aside from Jordan's overall worry and guilt over what happened during the mission. Jordan had been worried about Melvin during the entire mission, aside from when he was trying to kill him, and the Lifer considered that the offer to crash on the couch would only cement the idea that he needed to be worried over. That tending to him and letting him stay on his couch for the night was answering the question that he needed that help. He did, but he didn't want to put himself on others. Jordan was still in the mess with his own breakups and Melvin knew he was his own particular brand of handful on his own. People tended to not like him, and Melvin had upset Jordan in the past. He wasn't sure if he would be helping the man by taking him up on his offer.

So he considered it. After they returned to Deus, he paced in the greenhouse. He had his own bed. It wasn't like he didn't have places to sleep. He wouldn't be out on the streets if he didn't take the couch, but then again, Jordan knew that. He knew that Melvin slept in the greenhouse and, so far, hadn't told anyone about it. Jordan also didn't ask why Melvin wasn't sleeping in his own dorm, though he suspected the man must already know given his own troubles sleeping at night without his exes.

Thinking about going to his dorm, with the packed boxes and the empty space, and the reminder that that smell of her was now faded into a dull aroma that was becoming harder and harder to pick up hurt deep down too much to bear. As he looked at the cot in the corner of the greenhouse, his back was already starting to complain, and he thought of a inviting couch with softer cushions.

"Just sleeping." He said to himself. He could take a shower and brush his teeth and do everything necessary so that all he had to do was walk in, lie down, and sleep. He would be no trouble to Jordan at all.

It was only polite to take someone on an offer in the end, right?

After tidying up, Melvin showed up outside Jordan's door. He had never been to the man's dorm before. He had only known Jordan's place as Rep and Harrison's place, but from what he knew from Rep, Jordan was the one that kept things neat. Despite himself, he was a bit curious and excited to see this room.
He was also feeling rather silly even being here just to lay on someone's couch like some homeless person off the street. Maybe he should go to his dorm?

Well, if things got weird, he could always use the same escape any kid knew when going to a slumber party - he'd just say he had a stomach ache and needed to head back home.

He knocked on the door.

Jordan opened the door after a moment. He'd changed into sweatpants and a t-shirt, and his hair was still damp. "Hey," he said, nodding tiredly in greeting, and stepped back to let Melvin in. The room was tidy, recently swept and clean; the desk and shelves were organized and a stack of neatly folded blankets and sheets had been set on one end of the couch, ready for Melvin's use. There were no decorations on the walls, but it wasn't entirely impersonal.

"I'm making tea," Jordan said, and turned back toward the small kitchen visible through the side door. "If you want some, just say so." The mission had been a strain. He'd just let Melvin get settled without hovering over him.

Prolixity

As expected, Jordan's room was immaculate, and Melvin stepped in to admire the organization and detail to cleanliness in which the hunter had gone through. Part of him flattered himself with the idea that the man might have cleaned more in expectance of company, but he didn't see Jordan as the one to let his place of residence get sloppy, and was further impressed that he probably kept his place spotless at all times regardless of anyone coming over or not.

"Your place is nice." He commented, stepping in a little bit more before glancing at the couch that would be his spot for the night. It was considerate that he had tidied it up for him, and he wondered if this too was just Jordan being clean or the man being aware of how Melvin was and being considerate.

"Tea..sounds good." He wasn't a big tea drinker, but after today, he felt it was worth giving it another chance.

"Are you…doing okay?" He ventured in asking, moving to the couch to sit down and noticing Jordan's hair was still damn. Recently out of the shower.

He tried not to notice now.

"Thanks." He'd put a few things away before Melvin got there, but it was mostly that Jordan liked his room clean when left to his own devices. He took a second cup out of the cabinet in the kitchen and leaned on the counter, hands braced on the surface and head down, as he thought about the question. "No, but close enough," he answered after a moment, then turned around to look through the door back into the other room, studying Melvin.

"Didn't really mean to air all the dirty laundry out where everyone could hear." He sighed and ran a hand through his hair, embarrassed again. "I don't know what I expected. I wasn't thinking. Just ... angry."

He considered what Jordan had said in those moments.

"Do you really think I want you dead?" He said, looking up again across the room into the kitchen nook where Jordan stood.

"No." Jordan shook his head. "Something was - warping my thoughts. For a little while, I thought everyone was deceiving me and out to get me. With you, that became -- " he hesitated, deciding how to phrase it " -- the thought came to me that you wished it'd been me instead of Rin." He looked away, his mouth twisting. "In my right mind, I don't think that. Not really."

He turned to pick up the kettle from the burner and pour hot water into the mugs, using the tea as an excuse not to meet Melvin's eyes, not wanting to see what that admission might bring out. He needed a moment to compose himself, as well.

He listened and watched Jordan's back a moment as he thought about it.

"I don't want anyone to die. Not you. Not anyone. But…if I had to say there was a choice, I'd rather she hadn't turned her back to Medea. I'd rather she paid attention instead of me being on the ground just…being a useless hunter again."

He clasped his hands, working them together as he thought about it. "I don't want you to die Jordan. That's why..that's why I want you to promise me you'll never put me in that situation again." He watched the man, looking at his back in hopes he would turn around. "Don't make me kill you."

"...for any reason."

"You're not useless," Jordan said, and turned around, leaning on the counter, his hands folded around the edge of it. "Hell, you knocked me out of whatever it was that happened this mission. Kept me from going after anyone else."

He nodded minutely. "I'll try not to," he answered. "As long as I'm capable of making that decision." He swallowed, his mouth turning down. "You, either. Don't make me kill you, don't get heroic about it if -- well, if." Their life expectations were severely shortened by their job, but that didn't mean that he wanted anyone to sacrifice themselves.

"But you still were worried. You still were protecting me and sending me to the back. It's...what people do with me." Because he wasn't good in battle. Because he wound up getting underfoot or getting hurt and then becoming a burden to everyone else.

He didn't look at Jordan for a moment before he glanced above his glasses up at him. "Seems you and Rep were having the biggest fight out of the three of you. Something about running away and not being chased. That and Robert. Didn't know Rep hated Robert that much."

He might have been deflecting the conversation from him a little.
PostPosted: Fri Oct 03, 2014 7:50 am

Jordan gave Melvin a blankly surprised look. "Dude," he said, "that's literally my job. I'm a Sun. I get in the way of what's trying to hurt us and hit it back, protect you so you can do research and analysis or whatever other assignment you've got. Protecting you doesn't mean I think you're useless. It means that I'm doing what I've trained to do so you can perform your job more efficiently and not get attacked while you're doing it."

He winced, and everything about his posture drew in, his shoulders hunching slightly, elbows tucking closer to his sides, hands tightening on the edge of the counter. "I left because Rep didn't want me near him and I felt like Harrison didn't care if I was there or not." He sighed. "The Rift and what happened right after really ******** with my state of mind. I started withdrawing more, and they wound up feeling that I didn't care, so there was -- there was a distance, and that worsened some problems that we hadn't really known were there. That part, it's sort of complicated."

He took a deep breath. "Sometimes, when we fight, Rep can't handle it, and he runs off to his hoard or somewhere else to sulk. He doesn't come back on his own when he's feeling shitty, so he has to be tracked down and told he's still wanted." A ghost of a smile. "High maintenance. Me, sometimes I need to get some space or calm down so I don't freak out further. Or sulk, to be fair. I do come back most of the time. But I was feeling increasingly alienated and unwanted, and neither of them said anything or gave any indication that it bothered them if I wasn't there." He tipped his head back and looked at the ceiling. "I got jealous," he admitted, "and I pulled away further, because I wanted to be asked to come back. To get some kind of sign that I was still welcome. Still wanted."

He turned around to pull the teabags out of the tea and drop them on a small plate on the counter. "We'd lost a lot of trust in each other," he said. "We didn't really talk about it. The resentment got worse, and Harrison thought that me pulling away meant that I didn't care and didn't want to be there. Self-perpetuating cycle." He brought the mugs out of the kitchen area and over to the couch, putting one down on the coffee table in front of Melvin, then claiming a chair off to the side. "The thing about Robert is sort of tangential. Rep feels like Robert is a threat, to him or to me or to both. It's a jealousy thing, I think. It's not rational, as far as I can tell." His mouth compressed briefly. "If -- well. No, not if. Either way, he's going to have to deal with it, because I'm not giving up my friends."

"id rather you protected someone else. People who are actually doing something in need of protecting. I don't do anything but get knocked out during missions." He pointed out, reminding himself that he was never called upon to do much aside from healing and even then, it was something he decided rather than other people needed. He was just filling an obligated role that someone else could probably fill better.

He listened as Jordan spoke about the steps that lead to the breakup between him, Harrison, and Rep, and reached out for the cup of tea as he did.

"You wanted the same treatment as Rep and Rep and Harrison didn't expected you needed it. So….sometimes even you need it and no one gave it to you. Did you tell them that?" He asked, again with more questions (but Jordan should have expected that).

He leaned back, wondering if he chased after Rin whenever she was upset – but he usually asked her what was wrong, which sometimes upset her. He did try his best.

"I wouldn't expect Rep to be all bad at communicating. He seems to always be rather open about everything, even if he's yelling it." He did pick that time at the contamination mission to say a lot after all.

As for Robert, Melvin had to smile. "What. Really? Robert? I didn't expect him to get too jealous over him. Did he think he was after you? You and Robert never…well, I don't know. Are you guys that close?" Since he was newer to the island compared to the people he knew, he wasn't sure if there had been other relationships.

He looked down at his tea a bit more somber though. "I..wasn't sure Rep had feelings about friends that way, though. I heard him say that, that if Harrison or you ever asked him to drop a friend, he vwould in a heartbeat. Kinda makes me wonder how easily I'd just be given up." He took a sip of his tea.

"We were working together, so I protected you," Jordan pointed out. "Anyway, I'd rather you not die." He wrapped his hands around his mug, sighing.

"I didn't," he admitted. "It was a mistake. I ... was behaving really irrationally for a while." He looked away uncomfortably. "I know I screwed up," he said quietly. "I've had a lot of time to think about it and figure out what I did wrong and why, and to understand things about myself that I didn't get at the time. Plenty of time to kick myself over what I should've done instead of what I did."

Ferros rumbled quietly. I know, Jordan answered. Dwelling on it again.

"Rep is open about most things. But he didn't want to talk about it, he just wanted me to not be there." Jordan sipped his tea, taking brief refuge in the mug. "I understand more of why that happened now. Before you ask," he added, "I won't tell you about that. The reasons behind why he felt trapped aren't something I can talk about. But he felt like I wouldn't go away even if he wanted me to, and because we weren't talking about it, I thought it'd help if I reassured him that I wasn't going anywhere and I still wanted to be there even if we weren't close." He shrugged one shoulder, staring into the tea. "Didn't help, obviously."

"I don't really know," he answered. "Robert's been one of my closest friends since the trials. We went through that together, and he was kind of my second-in-command then, which is why he still calls me Boss a lot of the time. Maybe that's what it is, that that's something Rep wasn't around for. It's never been that kind of friendship, though."

He rubbed his thumb along the handle of the mug. "Rep's jealous," he said. "And loyal. He ... well. Harrison's a special case. He'd do anything Harrison asked him to." He left himself out of the statement. "Other than that, I don't believe he'd abandon you easily, or at all. And I don't believe Harrison would ask him to. It's not a fair statement to have made." He swallowed hard and grimaced, some of the bitter anger he'd displayed during the fight itself reawakening in his eyes.

Melvin sipped his tea, trying to loosen the knot in his own throat. "It sounds like you guys talk a lot about things and don't. You said you were kicking yourself over it. ….does that mean you want to try again?" He wasn't sure sometimes. On one hand, Jordan seemed like he was moving on, but then he got in the fight and he still seemed like he wanted back in. Considering he had been with Rep and Harrison since Melvin woke up in Deus, he guessed it was hard to break that type of history.

To go from that much time with someone and then nothing – he could feel that pain a bit too deeply.

He took another sip, inspecting the mug and impressed by the lack of smudges. "I never seemed to get along too much with Robert. I don't know too many people in Life. I don't know how it works in Sun, but with everyone in different labs or working in the field on whatever project they have, you don't really get to work with too many people unless it's on a mission and you don't get much time to actually talk tot them when someone is yelling at you to do something like power a weapon or work something out." It was too stressful for chit-chat.

"I still think he and Mimsy are a bit nuts." He added.

Another sip and he went on. "I never know what goes through Rep's head sometimes. I know he values you two a lot and he seemed like he would just – give up on everything and everyone else if it came down to it. I'm not really doing him any favors and we fight a lot. I guess I wonder why some people tolerate me."

To which he remembered he had been asking Jordan a lot of questions.

"Oh um….you don’t' have to answer my questions by the way. I'm just talking." And for him, most of his talking was asking questions. He was really trying hard to work against that.

He also hoped Jordan wouldn't take that offer as a way to not answer him.
PostPosted: Sun Oct 05, 2014 5:56 am

"We used to talk. Things ... got broken, somewhere along the line." Jordan rubbed his face with his free hand. "I don't even really know when. Not precisely." He set his mug down on the coffee table and rested his elbows on his knees, hands hanging loosely, turned inward. "I don't know. Sometimes I think we're just not good for each other, me and them. They're good together. They're good partners. I got out of step somehow." His voice roughened, strained and hurting and tired. "Maybe it'd be better if I just let them hate me for being the a*****e who left, who didn't try to fix things. Just get on with our lives separately and let them be happy together." As he spoke, his chin tilted downwards, half-obscuring his eyes under his hair. "I love them. I miss them. Home is where they are, and I want to go home. But only if me being there won't make things worse again."

He took a slow breath, swallowed, and reached out to pick up his tea again, sipping it while he regathered his composure, not bothering to hide the depth of his feelings but grateful to have something else to talk about. "Suns spend a lot of time training and sparring," he said. "Allan talks about nakama, as far as I can gather that means something like allies or people important to you. Sun's got some pretty crazy people, but we back each other up most of the time."

He shook his head. "I always thought Robert would've been a better fit in Sun or Moon, but I'm not part of that decision process, and he never asked for a transfer, so he must get something out of it. I don't deny he's kind of crazy," he added with a ghost of a smile, "but he's still my friend. Mimsy's also crazy, and I've been careful not to appear to be a threat to her claim on Robert." He shrugged a little. "If I decided I'd only be friends with people who weren't crazy, not only would I have very few or no friends, but I suspect it'd be an exercise in hypocrisy."

At the implied question, he sat back in his chair, resting one heel on the cushion of the chair and cradling his tea in both hands. "Rep fights with everyone," he pointed out. "Loudly and frequently, whether or not he likes you. It's just how he works." He regarded Melvin over the rim of the mug. "You have the tact of Godzilla," he said, "and you have your eccentricities, but I know I can rely on you. If you say you'll do something, by god, you'll do it, and you're concerned about your friends." He sipped his tea and added, "You're interesting to talk to, and I like you." He resisted adding, hell if I know why, suspecting that that would hurt Melvin's pride.

You like to take care of him, Ferros put in.

Yeah, but he was worried about being a burden, so I'm not about to suggest that he needs to be looked after. Even if he does sometimes.

Prolixity

Melvin continued to sip his tea and was glad that he wasn't the only one who thought Robert, and by extension Mimsy, was nuts. Then again, saying someone was nuts here was like saying they breathed sometimes. It was to what degree of nuts that was troubling. He worried that Robert was hooked up with a woman who would hurt other people and he didn't see it. Then again, he had really only spoken to Mimsy once. Maybe she wasn't too bad – though Jordan was keeping his distance. That must have said something as to why he would.

Jordan was at least kind enough to be honest, but that honesty bit when he regarded Melvin. Wincing at the Godzilla comment, it was at least soothed over by the compliments after. "Thanks. I'm glad you're at least honest. I appreciate when someone doesn't just not say something to me. It's why I like Rep. He tells me if I'm being…..not so great."

" I know I can be….hard to talk with. I thought I was okay but it seems my friends in college must have just put up with it more than I thought. Rin is helping with it and pointing out what I am doing wrong. Peyton, too. She got pretty upset when I asked her a few things about her sister when we sparred, but we talked after. She seems pretty nice – even if Rep hates her." He liked Peyton but also didn't want to upset Rep, who was his closest friend next to Rin.

"I'm trying not to ask so much now." But it was hard.

He sipped his tea, looking sideways as he felt guilty that he might not be trying as hard to curb his desires to ask too much.

Maybe you should try now. Jordan looks a bit sad.

Melvin regarded the Sun and admitted his questions might be tiring an already worn man out.

So he tried to think of something else to talk about that wasn't questioning – which was never a good experience for him.

What can I even talk about that isn't heavy?

I don't know. Look around. Maybe something will come up.

Melvin glanced around, looking for a nice topic. Clean place. Very good attention to detail. Orderly.

You are going to creep him out if you say stuff like that.

Frowning, he glanced down at his tea and then lifted his cup slightly. "Good tea."

He lowered it, holding the cup in both hands and letting the heat seep through is gloves as he tried to think of something else. "I thought you only drank coffee."

Question again.

Shut up. This is harder than it seems.
