Penelope clutched her satchel close to her side. She would not say that she was nervous, per say. Vigilant, perhaps, was a better word. No matter how many times she made these treks, there was always something that could go wrong. She could be followed from her job to her home. Her house could have been bugged while she was away. She could just as easily be followed now. Her eyes scanned the area for Negaverse officers, but her fingers did not nervously seek her hair as they might have done in the past.

Instead, she held herself tall and straight as she walked down the street. It was beginning to get late, but technically she wasn’t breaking curfew. Not to mention that it was allowed for one to travel to another’s home to spend the night. If anything, the empty bag at her side was the most suspicious aspect of her person. That was why she tucked it close, as though she were afraid someone would snatch it. She hoped that it would be big enough to safely carry all that her friend had found.

She pulled out her smart phone and sent a text. It was still seen as an innocuous action even with all of the changes made under Negaverse rule. All the same, she kept the message short and innocent. Just in case. ’Harper, I’m here. smile

Everything looked more innocent with a smile, right?

Almost there! biggrin DD

Harper smirked as she replied with the stupidest, happiest emote applicable. The cover was solid, supported by falsified paperwork that included permission for an array of freedoms. There was a bounce in her step tonight thanks to her recent promotion, and she couldn't wait to tell Pene. She had pushed her family into the support of the enemy for their own safety – careful to avoid inclinations toward actual corruption – and currently lived at the senshi base. There was nothing to lose except herself after slipping out of the forest. Tonight, the paperwork sat snugly against the encrypted documents procured for Pene. Like a cat bringing a mouse home. Well, she technically left the mouse's body in a dumpster, but it was what the mouse had shrieked that was important, anyway. Tonight, should a lieutenant or a captain discover her, they would be equally disposed of and a general or general king… well, that would certainly be a treat. The city was certainly overrun with vermin.

Approaching a corner and a bright streetlight, Harper pulled the tails of her knit ski hat down to further limit what the light could expose. It was not fear that prompted her, but simple tactical reasons: she wore the hat to cover the mess that was the left side of her head. There was marred skin that marked a fourth of her face and padding that protected that side against attack, since she was deaf in that ear. With glamours weakened, Harper couldn't risk the Negaverse putting two and two together.

Turning the corner, her smirk shifted into an earnest smile. There was always Pene. Thank Cosmos the girl had toughened up. Harper closed the small distance between them, waving.

“Hey there! Easy walk for you, too?”

Penelope looked reflexively at the screen when her cellphone bleeped and actually smiled softly at the text. Penelope had decided to stay in the city and infiltrate the government in her way, a smaller and perhaps less effective method than had been used by the enemy years ago. Being a legislative librarian was not an ideal role for physical strikes, but it meant consistent interaction with the puppet government the Negaverse had put into place. The constant supply of information provided from various contacts, as well as the materials she worked to archive, were more than enough reason to stay. She understood and respected her friend’s decision to live on the outside, but it meant that any messages received or time spent together was precious. Even if, most of the time, it was related to work.

So, she was genuinely enthusiastic when the teal-haired girl approached. She waved in return as Harper grew close, and the smile on her face broadened. For a moment, however brief, she could pretend that they were just meeting after a day of work to catch a movie or grab a drink. That their lives were normal, even though that had not been true since they first encountered a youma in Crystal Academy’s library. Still, she replied with a chuckle, “Sure was. Minotaur Jr. makes sure I get plenty of exercise. He loves his walks!”

Penelope embraced the other girl with warmth, careful to rest her chin on Harper’s right shoulder. She was aware of her friend’s lingering injury and needed to know that her whisper would be heard, even if her smile never faded, “I’m ready when you are. Do you know a safe place to change?”

“Two blocks down. Lights blown at intersection. Empty building.” The instructions were short and concise, but not clipped or harsh. On the contrary, if it was not for the contents, then the tone would be the equivalent of telling her where they were having afternoon froyo some five or six years back. It was enough information to know their cover and what to look for in general – the rest would be supplied later. Military-like exchanges were an easy second language. The danger level was still quite high, as any situation where senshi needed to guard their civilian identities while powering up within the city, but the underlying tension felt appropriate rather than strained. Like a heavy coat in the depth of winter. This was the new normalcy for her, being more Nyx than Harper - or, rather, she had been absorbed and the barrier burned.

Harper broke the hug, sliding her arm down Penelope's as a point of friendly contact. She was always grateful to see her best friend, before and after the fall of the city. Their contact was infrequent now due to their “occupations,” but it was more than some were able to have. Especially the ones who were dead or might-as-well-be – the corrupted. Bodies sometimes didn't even see graves, either due to their utter destruction or being forced to leave the corpse on the battlefield. But, her Pene, she was a fighter. Harper didn't have to worry about her. She gripped Pene's hand in her own and began to walk casually down the street.

“He’s an adorable little slobber-monster, just like his father! Does he still make those little high-pitched snorts?” Harper ask, laughing lightly at the memory. Minotaur Jr. had been rightfully wary when she suddenly dropped into Pene's home once, but his actual effectiveness as a guard dog was… up for debate.

“Only when he’s asleep,” Penelope laughed, instantly hearing the described sound in her inner ear. Bulldogs were not quite as bad as pugs when it came to snerking and snorting, but they were very, very close. She squeezed her friend’s hand as it slid into hers and enjoyed the time spent in their walk towards the abandoned building. Talking about Minotaur Jr. was the most natural aspect of her life; even full-blown Negaverse supporters could have their black hearts slightly warmed by pictures of a cute, pedigreed English Bulldog. Discussing him with Harper, who still remembered his sire, added a sort of bittersweet ring to it all. "Now that he's older, he's gotten gruffer in his grunts and barks. Deeper than even his father. Yet, he snores in my ear in exactly the same way."

Two blocks was not far to walk, and it was more calming with Harper holding her hand. Her friend had planned everything perfectly. No patrols, no matter how often Penelope looked behind them and to the side to make sure. Not too many people given the closeness of curfew. Only a straight line for two blocks, up until the place where the lights were broken. Then, the easy access given by an already jerry-rigged door.

As soon as they were inside, it was time to get down to business. She pulled her henshin pen from the bag and held it above her head to utter the familiar phrase, "Pasiphae Eternal, Make-Up!" By now, the criss-crossing of the energy beads against her chest had ceased to hurt; instead, the, tethering to the earth, the slight crushing sensation was as comforting as a heavy blanket on a cold winter's night. Bedecked in lace, bead, and pearl, she made her final change. She took the bag at her side and reversed it inside out so that instead of the conspicuous neon green it had been was now a dark navy. It was amazing how simple a thing could prevent identification later.

They were on a time limit now. With each passing moment, they were more likely to draw the attention of their enemies. She trusted her friend, however, and was eager to see what she had found. With a smile and a thumb's up, she indicated that she was ready to go. "I hope this bag's big enough. I'd hate to leave anything behind."

So far, it had been another thankfully smooth night. Harper was getting steadily better at putting these secret meetings together, which she liked to think had some bearing on her transfer: patrols coordinated, secrecy insured at the right time (enough time that it was not repaired or altered, enough time to dissuade immediate suspicion), and locations scouted via proxy. Too much foot-traffic to their base endangered it; she wanted no one to even think in its direction for too long. Thoughts easily turned to trouble. On the occasion that a city meetings was discovered, she could still count it as a victory in defeat, for the Negaverse would likely least suspect a fortified headquarters if the Order and its allies were caught whispering in deep in their territory. Harper noted mentally to suggest staging a few “failures” to keep up appearances. Routines were one of the few luxuries allowed for planning in her future.

Still, the teal haired girl could only smile when Penelope checked behind her. It wasn’t insulting - perhaps from someone else, it would have been - but rather, proved how much of a survivor the other girl was. Sailor Nyx was forced to trust what was left of the Order - Harper trusted in Pene freely.

Once in the building, she slipped a fat drawstring bag out from under her woolly hat and summoned up her cosmic power in time with her friend, “Nyx Comet Power, Make Up!” By the great will of her comet, she assumed, the padding remained. Eternal Sailor Nyx settled easily beside Eternal Sailor Pasiphae, their overall demeanor not shifting greatly with their new facades. While Pasiphae adjusted her bag, Nyx stole a look at her own buttwings. It had been a long journey - longer than most - but she was still proud of what they symbolized.

“Like I would let that happen,” Nyx smirked with her reply, well aware of her friend’s great care with their remaining culture and secret notes alike. After a moment, she gave a snort. “As if you would let that happen.” She plucked up the nondescript bag again and produced a nondescript pocket notebook from within, along with some curling, loose pieces of paper. “From our side: a few senshi and knights have powered up. From the other: thoughts on the alternating allegiance of the Dark Mirror Court. A possible coordinated assault from the Negaverse, unknown scale. Unknown location, too, but…” No comment was needed about how they only had so many hubs left, and only one consistently stocked with Order members. “Those are the highlights, anyway. Fresh and straight from the rat’s mouth.”

Nyx handed the notebook to Pasiphae after the summary, along with some encoded maps.

Pasiphae gave a throaty laugh at her friend's observation and her literally pulling something out of her hat. It was true. Neither of them were the type to run off unprepared. She immediately thumbed through the notebook offered to her but looked up sharply at the mention of a 'rat.' Harper's favorite word for an enemy, and if he had given information... well, it had not been pretty. Her concern came not from a doubt in her friend’s ability, but in a more base fear of ill befalling her best friend. "He didn't hurt you at all, did he?"

That was truly all she wanted to know on the subject. It was better not to think about who had to suffer for the information currently in their hands. Torture, or death, were still not the Shame Senshi’s preferred methods of dealing with those infused with Chaos, but purifications seemed as few and far between now as they had been two years ago. Plenty of deaths and corruptions, though, taxing their ever dwindling numbers. In such an environment, sacrificing those who sided with evil to preserve the few that fought for the light was a necessity. She was lucky that the ones as strong as Nyx kept her from dirtying her hands too much.

"I'll spread the word around my contacts. I don't know as many as I once did... but Paris and Chris are still here, as well as a group at the hospital. Christa texts me sometimes from the sewers." Pasiphae mentioned their mutual friends out of habit, although she doubted her teal-haired bestie needed the information. These days, Nyx knew far more about the inner workings of Order than she did. She held the door open for the other Eternal, fully prepared to follow her wherever she went.

After all, they were already in Hell. All they could do was continuing fighting in it.
PostPosted: Sat Apr 01, 2017 8:18 pm

Nyx’s mirth at once widened and softened at Pasiphae’s careful query. In some ways, her friend still held on to the crumbling bases of the Order's former pillars of operation. However, the phantasmagoria senshi thought she might be more interested in the methods, this time. Or, at least, whom had carried them out. Nyx let her hat phase into the nowhere subspace where regular clothes disappeared off to when they transformed and stepped through the offered door. She picked up on Pasiphae’s intention to set out and quite agreed with it. After all, it had been awhile since the opportunity arose for them to fight alongside one another. Nyx's final parcel was saved for this situation, most certainly because it was only half done. Even with the gap in monitoring for this area, their combined auras should be enough to attract some decent attention, so they had to keep moving or risk too much unwanted attention.

The updates on their mutual compatriots was itself much appreciated news - she knew of locations and orders, but also usually divested on feelings and more personal statuses. There were still a few out there that Nyx wanted to think of as human.

“He didn’t hurt me a bit,” she said in answer to the question, looking back to Pasiphae and crossing her arms. “But, to be fair, he was delivered right to us, so that wasn’t the hard part this time. The hard part was getting a tip on a nice pile of ‘illegal terrorist propaganda,’ also known as Destiny City legal records sometime in the last five to ten years. Just a perk of being part of the Shadows, I suppose.” Nyx let the information fall nonchalantly, but her being practically vibrated with the bottled excitement.

The Shame Senshi quickly exited the building as well, clutching her bag closely to her side as she listened to what the other Eternal had to say. She knew they had to move quickly, even if she did not know the patrol schedule here. Already the night was filled with the heavy, dark auras of the corrupted - thankfully in the distance, for now, but it was only a matter of time before they descended here as well.

Pasiphae could not contain a small sigh of relief to know that Nyx had not been harmed. She had not seen any sign of injury, but… it was a relief, all the same, to know that her friend was well. Her entire face lit up at the mention of the legal records. Harper had promised her a big haul, but she had not expected anything of this magnitude! The final part of the statement may have caused a ghost of fear to flit across her eyes. She knew how her friend admired the Shadows, and she could not deny that their work was important to their cause. Certainly, Nyx was tough enough to join their ranks. Nyx had always been stronger than her. The Shadows may have operated in darkness, but it was a necessary dark. As such, she should celebrate the other’s success and the information she collected. Yes, that was the more important aspect.

So, she gave the other woman a clap on the shoulder and a congratulatory grin, “We’ll have to celebrate later. I’ve got a bottle of pear cider that’d go nice over reading some legal records. Whiskey too, if you want something stronger.”

"Quite the motivational tool you have there," Nyx replied with a lighter, warm smile that contested the cooling night, inwardly preening at Pasiphae's approval. "But why not both? Make it Irish, as they say." She motioned her palm towards herself, emphasizing the silly joke. With a smooth bend of her legs, the phantasmagoria senshi was momentarily airborne before alighting on a nearby balcony. The mid-level rooftops followed, offering the best compromise away from the harsh street lighting and the eyeline of Negaverse patrols on the higher buildings. It exposed them equally to assaults from both, but that was only a concern if you messed up. Destiny City was an impatient teacher.

As Nyx led the way, she shared further information in curt stage whispers. Again, it was a risk, but so was remaining still for too long. It would not be a long sprint to be in an aura-sensing distance, if their targets were being wary. The senshi could be loud and long in their words when they were safely drinking cider later.

"One story. Old post office. One up top; backup is always late. Down another due to illness. Cocky."

As ever, her friend’s intel was reliable. They maneuvered from their current position to the old post office with relative ease. The one on top was dealt with swiftly and quietly, but that was not the biggest problem. The biggest problem lay in the building across the street, where the precious materials were waiting.

“Nyx… Nyx, they’re taking the files!” It was a harsh whisper laden with pain, but not colored at all with panic. Apparently, the Negaverse had some reason to believe the precious materials were no longer of value and were a waste of resources to keep. It always happened eventually with ‘dangerous’ items that promoted such values as civil rights and individual freedoms. She had simply hoped that they would have forgotten about these a little longer. Three individuals were currently in the room, one at the door and the other two boxing up as much material as they could get their hands on. They weren’t alone. She could feel at least another four circling around on and off. Likely teleporting the materials to the destruction site. And it would only be a matter of time before the Senshi were discovered as well.

There was only one avenue left to them now. Pasiphae sucked in a breath of chilly night and hoped to absorb its darkness. Her bag she quickly tucked into the top of her thigh-high boot. She needed her hands, and her heart, to be free and steady. “I’ll take the one at the door and call a shield so no one else can get in. Will you be okay with the other two?”

“s**t,” Nyx growled between clenched teeth. She didn't like to drop foul language, but this situation certainly warranted it. If nothing else, it kept her from roaring in rage and giving away their advantage of surprise. This had been planned to a tee. Now something was off. Nyx didn't do off, anymore; off got part of your face blown off.

“Too soon,” she spat again, deep and low and more to herself than useful commentary. Negaverse auras were popping in and out around them, which meant more power than had been accounted for. The numbers were still down in accordance with her information, at least, and the documents were nicely bundled, though it was altogether a small respite in the face of this development. Nyx felt the shift in her best friend, the deep breath and body language telling that Pasiphae was fortifying herself for something. There was no simply leaving then; Pasiphae would not willingly leave such a cache behind unless the situation became impossible. And it was not yet so, despite it all. When her friend spoke, Nyx approved, softly giving a soft affirmative noise in the darkness. Divide and conquer. Go for the head first and repel the legs.

“I’ve got it. Watch out for generals and cats. I can't guarantee they're not around anymore.”

Nyx slipped from the roof to land solidly on the pavement below, shadows still clinging to most of her figure. As she reached into a makeshift pocket of fabric, the weak lamplight was magnified tenfold for a fraction of a second - the glint of metal. Armed with the small weapon, magic, her strained wits, and a trusted comrade at her back, Nyx launched into battle.

She slammed her shoulder into the old government building`s door, avoiding the agent entirely. It didn't give on the first try, even with her cosmically enhanced strength, but it shuddered violently on its hinges and crumbled inward with a storm of splinters. Another slam with her shoulder destroyed a big enough panel, thinned by detail work, and Nyx squeezed inside.

“Horrible Shadow!” Her super level attack rose out of the shadows to assault its target - she hadn`t aimed for one officer in particular. Only one of them needed to be out of commission for her to take out the other.

Keeping up with Nyx was never an easy task, but the Shame Senshi was never afraid to follow her friend’s lead. When the other Senshi successfully created a pathway, Pasiphae was right behind her. If the flash of metal bothered her, she gave no sign. No, her concentration was only on the Negaverse agent at the only remaining entrance to the room. She dashed forward and kicked him the gut, sending him flying out the room.

“Pasiphae Social Pariah!”

The beads snapped from her mask, multiplying in glowing maroon and surrounding her and the entrance way. No one would be able to get in now, not without breaking the shield. Safe. She and Nyx were safe. Well, the tussle behind her indicated they weren’t quite safe yet, but that would pass soon enough.

’1. 2.’

She couldn’t remember when it became habit for her to count down the seconds until her shield would fall, particularly when it could be unpredictable. Depending on the different blows she took, it could fall faster. Still, she felt better having a mental watch on it. It helped keep her focused on the battle around her. She had her back turned towards the records and whatever resistance Nyx was facing. Someone had to keep an eye on new developments. Both of their lives depended on her observations about changes in their fight. She had long ago learned to fight from within a shield. Having to stand still did not make her helpless.

’17. 18. 19.’

Pasiphae growled at the sight of incoming troops, calling back intel to the one who still battled within, “Not sensing any Generals. Three more incoming. Two Lieutenants and a Captain. Walking stick, switchblade, and axe. I’ll try and keep them back.”

’31. 32. 33.’

The walking stick cracked against her shield. The lieutenant who possessed it winced, an expression with which Pasiphae had become far too familiar. She’d need another shield soon. Either one more hit or a ew more seconds. She already had the Super Attack command on her lips and waited to speak it the instant that maroon light faded.

44. 45. 46.
PostPosted: Sat Apr 01, 2017 8:35 pm

The terror-filled screams of the agent to her left was akin to white noise for the phantasmagoria senshi. It was the rain outside the window; grousing of birds in a summer field. A sound quietly expected and acknowledged. It would have been alarming if it had not been there, but as it was, it signaled that she was free to shift her attention to the agent on the right. That one would get something special, a technique she resorted to in the recent, darker years of Destiny City. Senshi magic had come to tolerate the method as a body would when constantly exposed to a disease.

With a flick of her wrist, the sharpened vegetable peeler was primed to strike the downward blow. With the strength of arms that wrangle a 1,400 pound animal on a daily basis, Nyx plunged the weapon into the agent's upper torso, near the collarbone. Wrenched it out. Brought it down again. Only stopping when the other target grew too quiet, the senshi turned and gave him much of the same, slipping the peeler up through the guts this time. Her hands, arms, gloves, and a good portion of her formerly white fuku's torso was stained in splatters of bright red.

Pasiphae's voice broke like a wave over the intermittent gurgling and screaming. Good news, sorta.

Nyx wiped her hands on the agent's uniform, shock keeping both targets relatively tame, before letting him fall to the ground.

"We're clear in here. I'm grabbing what I can," she called back as she began quickly glancing over piles of paperwork for the most important looking documents. "Let me know when you're out and we'll trade before getting the hell out of here!"

Pasiphae wanted to resist. She wanted to call up the shield again, to tell Nyx to shove as many of the precious papers into her bag and get away as quickly as possible. She wanted to let the shield fall and dive straight into the battle alone and hold the line until she got the call that her best friend was safe. She wanted to do these things, but she didn’t dare. Her partner would never allow it; if something went wrong, she would never forgive her.

The other Eternal was a much more capable fighter, always had been and always would be. The evidence of blood and the flash of metal from the vegetable peeler turned weapon was proof enough of that. Even after all this time, the Shame Senshi couldn’t bring herself to wield any sort of weapon other than the magic she possessed. It just felt… unnatural. No, best to leave that sort of thing to Nyx.

But that didn’t mean she wouldn’t fight. With one second left, she bellowed, “SWITCH!” As the shield dissipated around her, Pasiphae shot forward towards the lieutenant still reeling from the fading shame her magic had given. One of her gloved hands caught him by the throat while the other pushed against the side of his face. One sickening crack was all the signal she needed. She dropped the body to the floor and spun on her heel to begin searching the documents for what she was going to save. There was no way she could take it all… but she would take whatever she could.
