This RP is backdated to July 22nd, 2014

Babylon knew he wasn’t imagining his night with Avalon, because the scrapes she’d left on his back were still red and raw and healing beneath his uniform. But tonight, he’d taken to the streets to look for her, to try to figure out where they stood - hopefully talking would be easier with some of the sexual tension out of the air. Or not. He felt dishonest, because his ultimate ulterior motive was to convince her to purify - but the warmth in his chest when he thought of the general also felt completely authentic.

So far tonight, he’d looked just about everywhere for her - and she was nowhere to be seen. He was a little worried - stabbing your comrades and sleeping with the enemy couldn’t put you on good terms with your superiors, and he hoped nothing had happened to her. It would have been his fault if anything had, and he had enough blood on his hands as it was.

He fired off a quick note to her, one that he hoped wasn’t too lovesick sounding, and then shoved the pen and paper back into his pockets. He sensed a squire approaching, and so he straightened up and tried not to moon too much as he looked towards the approaching aura. At first he didn’t recognize her, but then he gasped in surprise.

Mistral.

“You look incredible,” gawked Babylon.

"I feel like s**t," said Mistral, ushering Mendel along behind her. She felt such remarkable amounts of s**t that she couldn't properly articulate it in any other way. s**t pretty much summed it up.

Meeting Babylon's glowing blue eyes was an intimidating task, so Mistral didn't try. She picked at the glowing Babylon lights strung from her skirt, and slowed her roll as Mendel tried ferociously to climb up Babylon's front. He mashed his paws into the front of Babylon's jacket and barked gleefully, big brown eyes sweet in the manner of all puppies. "I was going to go finish installing the upgrade on my ring," she mumbled, "want to come with?"

Babylon stumbled backwards laughing. “Okay, down boy,” he said, scratching Mendel vigorously behind his floppy ears and trying to settle him down. He frowned at Mistral’s mention of feeling like s**t, but any distraction was more than welcome tonight, and he wanted to make certain she was okay in the aftermath of what had happened at her wonder.

“Yeah, I’d love to,” he said, brushing his hands through Mendel’s fur. After all the bloodshed involved in getting the device, he was looking forward to seeing what the final results were. “What do we need to do?”

Once Mendel was coaxed down, the (un)happy trio marched off towards the quiet rooftop Mistral had located and claimed for her own. It wasn’t much, as far as secret Earth hideouts went; the building had been condemned in the first burst of DC’s housing bubble, and now was waiting for its awful death. The stairs were stable enough, and there were few enough of them that Mistral could climb them in one go. She nestled herself back into the small nest of blankets she’d brought up on her second visit, but only after extricating a pillow for Babylon to sit on.

The blueprints popped into her hands, and she settled them over her lap. Out came one of the boxes of device pieces, and she pulled off the dark circle of her ring. “It’s like… it was a little hard to make, but…” She reached into the box and withdrew a slim curve of metal. A tiny dot of pale blue flickered at one end. “It won’t work right away,” she said. “My device isn’t powered yet. But I’ll know if I installed it right.”

She’d always known when she installed it wrong, after all.

Mendel tucked himself behind her like a living, breathing couch cushion and she leaned back into him as she fiddled with the curve of strangely blue-gray’d steel. “How have you been,” she said, still staring at the pale blue light. “I haven’t seen you since… since.”

Babylon followed her quietly, not sure where they were headed and equally unsure how Mistral had found this place and made it hers. Most of his acquaintances had preferred lurks where they spent their powered downtime, but this was the first time he’d seen one that had been particularly done up in any fashion.

“Okay,” he said, settling down across from her on the pillow. “You’re the expert.”

He watched her work, and when she asked him how he’d been, Babylon hesitated. “I’ve been okay,” he said hesitantly. On the one hand, not a whole lot had happened. On the other hand, a lot had happened. Just, personal s**t. Maybe Mistral had seen Avalon. (Although, he expected that if Mistral had seen Avalon, he would not be talking to Mistral now. She had a history of being terrible to Mercury pages.)

“Am I the first person you’ve seen tonight?” he asked, settling his chin on his palm.

She tried to wedge the pieces together for the thirty thousandth time. They didn’t click the way they ought, and Mistral dropped her signet ring on her lap to try to twist the silver piece of metal a little more, to make it fit. “It ought to click in,” she said. “Simple as pie. But it won’t click.”

He was asking strange questions, to be honest. She slid the silver band on her finger and tried to twist it onto her finger, thinking it might fit better that time if she knew it would fit on her hand, like it didn’t magically resize or something. With a scowl, she tossed her signet to Babylon. “Try that on, will you? You’re the first person I’ve seen in nights. I’ve sort of been avoiding people, you know.” For a good reason. Half their compatriots probably hated her by now. She remembered Sarras, calling her a murderer.

A deep breath and a few quick blinks knocked the tears out of her eyes. “Are you looking for someone specific?”

Babylon took the ring and tried it on, but it fit to the second knuckle and would go no further. He shrugged. “No dice,” he said, holding it back out to her. “They’re not meant to fit anyone besides their owners.” Anyway, he could see her frustration that the device wouldn’t click together, and he wanted to distract her from it.

But could he tell her? God, he was going to have to. “General Avalon,” he said, trying to make it sound nonchalant. “I’ve got to talk to her.”

“That psycho b***h,” she said, looking up from her device at last. “You want to talk to her? Holy s**t, Babylon, she is literally psychotic, she tried to kill me. She would’ve done it, too, except there was some massive Order signature.”

Actually, hadn’t General Avalon been trying to get to… him? She looked closely at him, and tried to slot the ring into the device again. There was a quiet snick, and she tried to wiggle it apart. No dice. She huffed out an expansive sigh, and hunched over it. “Past me was a crazy b***h. Anyway, why not just write her a letter? Dear General Avalon, thank you for not stabbing anyone close to me today, that’s so kind.”

Okay so that obviously had not gone well at all and telling anyone you wanted to hold parley with a murderous psychopath was a one-way ticket to suspicion and distrust. "I know," he said with a shrug. "But she and I have a history and I need to talk to her." That didn't sound fishy, right? He hoped it didn't sound fishy.

Hearing the ring click, he leaned a little closer to see if anything had happened. It appeared inert. "I tried that already," he said, which sounded more pathetic than he'd hoped it would. It wasn't like he'd been expecting a reply - Avalon had no way of directly contacting him - but usually going out and wandering around was a good way to get her attention and it was weird for it not to be.

“She’s a crazy Negaverser,” said Mistral. “Maybe she’s doing something crazy and Negaverse, like trying to corrupt her Wonder and move beyond your reach forever.” She mumbled something expletive-like under her breath. “C’mon,” she said to it, “stop flashing.”

Maybe it was like wifi, and wouldn’t glow solidly until the device was online and it was streaming… data? She mumbled another curse word and slipped her signet ring back on. The light stopped flashing, then, and she held up her hand, looking impressed with herself.

“Uh, dang,” she said. “I have no idea what I did to make that work, but you know, I guess I’d better… call the Code, or something. Get the gang together and try to not get punched by anyone too hard. For achieving my next stage on the backs of our dead brethren.”

Babylon fixed Mistral with a look that more or less said stop sassing me about the whereabouts of my crazy ex-best-friend because I am clearly seriously concerned about this. Of course, he never said any of this out loud and so it was entirely possible all that went right over her head. Anyway, she seemed to have figured the ring out and also seemed to need some friendly counseling, so he decided to let the entire Avalon matter drop. Better to just deal with this mess himself, right?

He’d had better ideas. But he’d also had worse.

“Well, you put it on,” suggested Babylon, although he full well had no idea how it worked. For a descendant of Mercury, he was incredibly technologically inept. “No one’s going to punch you,” he said, struggling with the urge to hug her. “I won’t let them. These power-ups happen at random. You didn’t advance because they died.”

Babylon and Mistral were not sitting far enough away that Mistral couldn’t put her forehead on his un-pauldron’d shoulder. “I advanced literally as soon as I got to Babylon,” she objected, her voice muffled in his fur collar. Actually, it had been as soon as she’d successfully completed past her’s device. “Correlation doesn’t always mean causation, but as far as evidence goes, I think I did advance because they died.”

She sighed unhappily. “This is all guesswork,” she said. “******** guesswork.”

He wasn’t going to sit here and argue with her, because ******** if he knew. For all the fancy, glowing lines streaking his face and body, Babylon was just as clueless as anyone else when it came to how their faction’s magic actually worked. This was of course frustrating when you were trying to do things like assure your good friend that she had not earned her rank with the blood of innocents. “You said it,” he said, nodding. “I wish I knew more about it than I do.”

Babylon didn’t know a whole lot about the senshi, but he was willing to bet that they at least had more information to work off than the knights. After all, they had cats to tell them stuff and knights had to rely on silly things like intuition and uncooperative ghosts of Christmases past.
PostPosted: Sat Sep 20, 2014 10:06 pm

“Yeah,” she said. “******** piece of s**t unuseful Code. I’m going to go back to my Wonder and strangle it.” And then she would find that doll and take it apart, unless it proved to have developed a, a, an empathy circuit or something in its off time.

She leaned back onto Mendel and hugged her knees to her chest. “Do you think Menachem knew that Asimov’s mother was crazy? Like, that crazy? That extreme? People died. She knew people would die. And she didn’t put in any safeguards to protect our own. Why wouldn’t she do that? I don’t understand.”

Babylon wished he knew more, wished he had something reassuring that he could tell her - but he didn’t. He’d had scant few looks into his ancestor’s memories, and Raziele’s presence so far had been limited. True, he’d had the vision of her in the kitchen, seen her certainty that no knight of Mistral would ever return to the labyrinth… but he doubted that would do much to comfort Mistral.

He shifted off his cushion to be able to wrap his arms around Mistral. “I don’t know,” he said. “I really don’t know. I don’t know what her thought process was when she sealed the labyrinth and I don’t know why everything happened to us the way it did.” Raziele had expected tomb raiders and barbarians. She had set those traps to kill, to maim, to turn her labyrinth into an inhospitable death trap. She’d meant for nothing there to be recoverable. But telling Mistral that would never go over well. It was better to lie for her sake than to tell the horrible truth.

“I’m not certain I trust the Code,” he confessed. “I’ve been a knight for a long time, and it only appeared recently. Sure, we weren’t doing very well on our own - but we’re not doing much better with it.” There certainly had to be advantages to working with it - but at what cost? They hardly knew anything about it or where it kept its brain.
