I only swim free
"Look, I'm just saying - holy s**t I think stepped on a frog, that was weird - that it's been a long time since I've gone swimming so don't like, judge me or anything, okay?"
Ian was already halfway into the lake, dressed in a pair of black swim shorts and no shirt, the blue-green water lapping at his waist. He ran a hand through his hair, which was starting to get longer, and the bandages had been pulled off from his neck, only because getting them wet would have been bad. The scar that spread from one side of his throat to the other was starkly visible, and Ian was clearly trying to pretend it wasn't there at all.
"Come on, duck," he said, waving a hand and laughing, giving a little splash. "Get in, let's see how far we can go."

"I'll have you know," Ian said, as he perched precariously on one side of the little canoe, an oar in hand, "I have literally zero idea of how to actually steer this thing, so I would just like to take this moment and say that if we fall into the lake at any point, it's totally not my fault."

sweets for the sweet
The s'mores were taking too long; Ian complained (jokingly) about them getting burnt if they were held over the fire for more than thirty seconds, but after being threatened to not get any by a stern faced Shiloh, he obediently shut up and sat next to him quietly.
"Needs more marshmallow next time," he said thickly, approximately two minutes later, his mouth filled with the sweet taste of chocolate and his head still throbbing from where Shiloh had (playfully) swatted him.

row row row your boatThey ended up in the water anyway, after several failed attempts on Shiloh’s part to show Ian how to do it. The truth was, he had never really understood the concept of rowing himself and he inadvertently dropped his paddle in the water. Then, as he was leaning over to get it, he’d toppled over and into the water, headfirst, with a splash. When he broke through the surface it was with raucous laughter. They’d barely made it two feet from the dock and here he was, standing soaked in chest-deep water. He grinned, and about two seconds later Ian would join him, his inability to paddle leaving him incredibly weak against Shiloh’s ability to rock the boat.

mud on the tiresThey’d piled into the truck one evening at Shiloh’s insistence. It wasn’t late enough yet for the sun to have dipped below the horizon and the warmth of it shined through the windows as they drove along the back roads. It hadn’t rained while they’d been there and so the dirt roads Shiloh finally turned them down weren’t really muddy at all, but they’d sped along them stupidly anyway, catching air over the uneven bumps, spinning out in an empty dirt lot. It was stupid, and it was careless, but above all, it was fun.

I only swim free“Probably, there are so many frogs!” Shiloh had forgotten about them, but along parts of the shore were reeds and plants that the frogs loved to hide in. Not only frogs, but there were snakes as well, and birds, and the occasional fish. Shiloh grinned thinking about it; he’d spent many a summer catching frogs. He jumped into the water after Ian, splashing around far worse than any duck ever wood, until he’d caught up with Ian and he grabbed his hands, pulling him deeper out into the lake. “Are you sure you don’t need your water wings?” he teased. Of course he noticed the scar, usually hidden beneath bandages, it stood out now, angry-looking. A flurry of emotions always rain through Shiloh at seeing it, anger, worry, fear. But most of all it made him want to pull Ian close to him, to hug him and reassure him that it’d all be okay. Shiloh knew what it was like, it had been a long time since he’d been comfortable taking his shirt off but he wanted to do for Ian the same thing that Ian had done for him, to let him know it was okay, that he was loved and supported and that the marks would fade, and the nightmares too. And until they did, Shiloh’d be there.

mud on the tires
He hadn't driven an actual car since before his time at Deus, and that felt like a lifetime ago; so when Shiloh had suggested they get into the car and drive around, just for fun, Ian had leapt at the chance - and of course, he let Shiloh drive, because the truck was totally his domain.
They sped down endless, unoccupied roads at crazy speeds, but Ian had never felt so free.
"Next time, get something with a sun roof," Ian shouted happily, about twenty minutes later as they raced across another dirt road. "Then we could reenact that scene from all those movies where you stand up and stick your arms out of the sun roof and all that cheesy music plays and you get some sort of magical epiphany about how profound life is."

I only swim free
Ian had never seen too many frogs up close, and he didn't really want to start now, especially not in the form of stepping on one. He wrinkled his nose a little, peering down into the water; but a splash as Shiloh jumped in succeeded in distracting him, and then he was being pulled out into the middle of the lake.
He bobbed up and down and gave his boyfriend a mock stern look.
"Don't sass me, kid, or I'll have to dunk you," he warned, and then pushed his hands through the water, sending a spray of it towards Shiloh. Ian took off, laughing manically, and half splashing, half swimming in his attempt at getting away before Shiloh could retaliate.

To be entirely fair, the first time the boat had tipped had totally been Shiloh's fault, and Ian made sure to point out this very obvious fact. And the second time was also Shiloh's fault, because he'd been the one to yank Ian overboard so that the pair of them were splashing around like children, the canoe facedown.
The third time, Ian grudgingly admitted, was his own time.
"Look," he said, as he treaded water with his legs and attempted to right the canoe with his hands, heaving at it. "That mosquito was coming straight at me, okay, it was totally getting ready to attack."

row row row your boatHe was being a baby, Shiloh had told Ian. He had also said the same thing when the boat tipped a fourth time, when he’d managed to grab a snake swimming through the reeds, and chased after him with it.

sweets for the sweetThe only thing better than warm melting chocolate and marshmallow fluff, was sharing it with Ian. No, that wasn’t true. The best part was sharing, but it was that they got to share with their mouths, as Shiloh leaned in for a kiss, all chocolaty and delicious.

sweets for the sweet“Oops,” he said, having dribbled a bit of melted chocolate from his graham cracker onto Ian’s hand, which was currently located curled around his. “Better get that, huh?” He lifted Ian’s hand up to his mouth, running his tongue over the offending chocolate and Ian's warm skin, giving it an extra lick for good measure. Then he’d leaned over, a devilish look on his face, and proceeded to drip chocolate elsewhere. “Oops, did it again. Here, just let me…”

I only swim free“I’m not a kid! I’ll dunk you!” It had culminated, of course, with Shiloh getting dunked, for both sassing and splashing Ian, neither of which he could resist. To the dunked, he replied by latching onto Ian like an aquatic spider monkey, wrestling him in the water. When that didn’t work, he dunked himself under the water, and resorted to ‘pants’ing Ian, paddling off with his swim trunks in tow. “Neener, neener, I can see your–“ Luckily Ian intercepted him before he got any further. kuroopu again, if you would proceed with the not looking at me ty

mud on the tiresShiloh was laughing so hard he was nearly in tears, swerving them around a bend in the road, the engine of the truck roaring as he pressed his foot down on the pedal. “If we did that you’d fly right out of the truck, and chickens can’t fly, Ian.” They were being idiots, and he loved it.

mud on the tiresLater, after they’d gotten back and the sun was setting, Shiloh had pulled Ian up against the truck, much like Ian had done to him the first day they’d arrived. “I don’t need a sunroof to have an epiphany,” he smiled, “Or to hear the cheesy music playing in my head.” Then, without further ado, he’d leaned in and kissed Ian, long and slow and lingering, one hand on the truck and the other wrapped around Ian’s waist. The adrenaline of the evening hadn’t quite worn off and it wasn’t long before his hand has slipped under Ian’s shirt, sliding up his back. kuroopu yep just continue with the not looking
