He'd never used a bow and arrow before.
The weapon was made of a smooth metal that mimicked the color of ice; it was rather pretty, if he thought about it, all pale blue and white mixed together. He did like the feel of it against his palm, the weight of the bow strangely reassuring, the arrow fitting between his fingers comfortably, instead of bumbling.
Still, it was taking some getting used to; the first several tries, the arrow merely flopped to the ground a few feet away, the bowstring having been snapped either too early or too soon. Chance didn't seem to particularly perturbed by this, but Asher was fretful inside of his head.
Relax, thought Chance, as he picked up the arrow for the third time, absently swinging it between his fingers. He'd gotten it a few feet farther this time, but still not nearly as good as it should have been. You didn't make a mistake, I'll get it eventually. Don't worry.
{ - I must worry, - } Asher thought, somewhere ruefully. { - you're my hunter, and worrying is part of my job - }
Chance smiled, fitting the arrow into the bowstring again.
Worry less, then.

The days after the mission dragged on, and Finn could only attempt to move on with them, trying to find some semblance of normalcy in his day to day activities. He was becoming more wore down the less he slept, more irritable at times and more passive at others. He was an absolute mess, though outwardly, save for a bloodshot eye and the almost constant rolling of an irritatingly itchy shoulder, he appeared pretty much fine. He approached the training field at a fairly clipped pace, his weapon already summoned, twirling it in his hand, his right hand for once, as he got used to using the lance more ambidextrously then he ever had before. < Finn, you should sleep after this > Trynt growled in his head, surprising him, as the wyvern barely ever spoke. Finn only mentally shrugged in return, ignoring the advice as he stepped out onto the field and had a look around. There really wasn't much to see, though his gaze did stop on somebody not too far away, watching the man for a time, and quickly picking up on a sense of newness about him (not difficult considering he seemed to be trying to get a feel for his weapon...either that or he was drunk which was equally as plausible). Finn saw no reason not to approach this unfamiliar figure, and made his way over, stabbing Trynt into the ground once he got close, and leaning forward against the lance, both hands wrapped around it's shaft, as he continued to watch, a somewhat amused smirk beginning to curl up the corners of his lips, though the look in his eye remained steely.

After his third or fourth attempt, he became aware that someone was watching him.
It didn't bother him too much; after all, this was a public training field, and clearly there would be other hunters and trainees coming and going. Chance merely pulled back on the string, fired off another arrow, and then another, and another. He had no quiver, but there wasn't a need for one; the arrows merely appeared, one after the other, when he pulled the string.
It was only when Chance was on his sixth arrow that he said anything at all, though he kept his gaze on the target in front of him.
"Hey," he said lightly, and his fingers curled around the wire of the bow, carefully readjusting his footing in an experimental sort of way, as though testing to see if this would make any difference. His fingers brushed over the edge of the arrow and then he let it fly, releasing the wire with a sharp twang. It flew several feet forward and then spiraled down, colliding with the grass.
Chance slowly lowered the bow, turning his head to flash a faint smile at the unfamiliar man.
"Nice weapon."

Finn was actually mildly impressed that the other man could go so long without paying the moon intermediate any notice. Either he had yet to realize that Finn was standing their watching him, or he was very good at pretending not to care. Or he really actually just didn't care. That was also a possibility. Still, Finn stood his ground and waited, patiently, because at some point, this man was going to acknowledge his presence. Ah, there it was. "Hey." Came Finn's almost bored sounding reply, though if the other man took the time to even glance Finn's way, he would see him sporting a small smirk. And then the other guy turned, and Finn actually got a chance to take him all in, from head to toe, his eye trailing down and back up again. "Yours isn't so bad either." He replied, smirk growing. "Let me guess. New?" He asked, tone still rather mild as he straightened up, releasing his hold on his lance with one hand but keeping the other wrapped around it as he moved to stand beside it.

Dressed in a pair of worn jeans, Converse All-Stars, and a pale teal hoodie, Chance hardly presented a particularly exciting appearance. But he still had the casual, unfazed look of someone who had yet to be tainted by Deus' experiences, a few stray black curls falling across his forehead.
His dark eyes flickered briefly to the smirk and then to the weapon again, trying to figure out what it even was. He hadn't been lying when he'd said nice; it was clearly impressive, all twists and turns and sharp edges - something a lot easier to wield in close combat than a bow and arrow.
"What gave me away?" Chance said mildly, a faintly joking tone to his voice. "I just woke up yesterday, and was getting settled in for most of the day. I've already been told to get my a** in gear and start learning s**t or else I'll get killed, so I figured I'd get started working already."
His arm had lowered so that the bow was hanging loosely at his side. He smiled slightly.
"I'm Chance," he said, and stretched out a fingerless glove-clad hand toward Finn.

Finn's smirk never lessened in the slightest. "Maybe I just have a sense for these things." Not really, no, but he definitely could not recall ever seeing this man around before (which didn't actually mean much), and the way he handled his weapon seemed just slightly off, a little slow, a little stiff, as if he were just getting used to it. Again, with the way some weapons could evolve, that might have also meant very little, but to top it all off there was just something...softer about him, like he hadn't yet been introduced to the joy of experiencing true horror. In any case, it had only been a guess, a small gamble, and as it turned out, he had been correct. "Ah, well, whoever you have been speaking to seems to know their s**t. They speak the truth." Finn replied, reaching up with a glove hand to scratch a lightly scarred area between his eye patch and his right temple. "Finn. Finn Connor. Moon division." He reached out to shake hands with this Chance, cold gaze never leaving his. "You know, if you want, I could give you a few pointers on how to not get yourself killed, and in return, you could shoot some arrows at me." That seemed like a fairly imbalanced arrangement, just to hear it, but Finn really thought that he could use some more experience in both his defense and offense against long distance projectile weaponry.

Finn's eyepatch received a mildly curious glance, Chance's eyes moving across that side of his face before they settled on the rest of his face, the smirk that twisted his lips upwards at the corner. It gave him the overall impression of someone who liked to play games - or at least, someone who knew how to play games.
"I'm sure they did," said Chance lightly. "He seemed pretty intense; but then again, I assume most of you are pretty intense, seeing as how long half of you have been around. The patch is pretty badass, by the way," he added, with a nod in Finn's direction.
He shook the other's hand with a reasonable grip, though his fingers were less worn than Finn's, and slightly more slender. The bow was swung loosely back and forth, Chance raising his eyebrows. He cast a sideways look at the practice dummies he'd been attempting at shooting and then back at Finn, the left side of his mouth quirking upwards in what was mostly a smile.
"Sure," he said, shifting his feet and resting the tail end of the bow against the grass. "I'd be down for that; but wouldn't me shooting at you hurt? I wasn't told how all of this..." He waved a hand. "worked, I mean. If I shoot you, is it the same as shooting a monster? Or are these only monster-specific?"

The eyepatch had become so much a part of Finn that he often forgot that he even wore one, up until the moment when somebody mentioned it. Not many did, however, and he imagined that was mostly due to people trying to be considerate over what might very well be a sensitive topic. It wasn't a sensitive topic in the slightest. Finn's smirk turned to something more akin to a grin, though the warmth in his eyes remained completely absent. "Aw why thanks. I assure you, however, that there was nothing bad a** about the way that I lost it." His eye, he meant. He wasn't above admitting that. "Which brings me to my first lesson. If you ever, ever feel the need to back talk to one of your superiors....just don't." He paused, taking this moment to pull Trynt out of the dirt, before adding on. "Especially if that superior just happens to be the Death Division leader, Caelius. You're not in Death, are you?" He asked, lazily spinning the weapon in front of himself and getting into position. As for the getting hurt question..... "It might sting a little. Kind of like getting shot with a paintball, actually." At least, that's how it felt to get shot by the few gun type weapons he'd sparred against. "Your weapon protects you, with a shield....Made of Fear. It's kind of like having an invisible body of armor." He explained, not really sure how much Chance had already learned. He made it sound like he didn't really know anything about it, however, so Finn felt it might be safe to continue. "Fighting a monster is slightly different. They're made of Fear. Our weapons absorb it." He stopped spinning Trynt, and held his arms out wide. "You know what? Hit me." kuroopu u can go first no initiative roll needed <3

Chance's eyebrows rose. "Something happen?" he asked, mildly intrigued by the injury behind the eyepatch. He had a few cigarette burns himself, thanks to a few boys from the home, but nothing quite as drastic as losing an entire eye. "So it's a permanent thing, then? You didn't just get something in your eye, you lost the whole thing? That's some crazy s**t."
Clearly whatever Finn had done had involved talking back, which Chance found somewhat amusing, in spite of himself. He gave a small nod, casting a glance sideways at the large, unusually shaped weapon before he flicked his gaze back up to the other man's face.
"Nope," he said lightly. "I've been stuck in Sun; I hear it's pretty much the front line, you go in and you just...do your s**t and get your a** attacking."
The weapon thing was relatively interesting; Chance lifted his bow and examined it, eyes scanning the cold metal, the pale, icy blue of the runes, the sharp wire that cut into his fingers each time he pulled back on it. "Huh," he said, and tugged at the string, a single arrow materializing into place between his fingers. "That's pretty cool." Pun not intended, but appreciated. "So sort of like having the friendly fire off in games, that's good to know."
He notched the arrow into place, his look shifting from vague curiosity to one of mild surprise. But since Finn had already told him that nothing terribly dramatic would happen to him if he shot him, Chance raised the bow, and pulled back on the wire, closing one eye. A second later, he let go.
With a quick twang and a small gust of air, the arrow flew towards Finn, but his aim was slightly off, and most likely would wind up merely grazing the other man.
"Well, s**t."

This was seriously actually bizarre. Nobody had ever interrogated him about his eye before. Usually there were just pirate jokes and d**k sucking accident jokes and occasionally the odd person actually thought that it looked bad a** or sexy but....Nope, nobody had ever really seemed seriously interested in how it had happened, though to be fair pretty much all of his friends either already knew or were there when it happened.... When Finn spoke again, he kept his voice mild and nonchalant, as if what he was saying was completely normal. "I questioned the hypocrisy of the system. Apparently they're not big on that, here." He replied. "And yes, it is a permanent thing. Eyes don't hold up against acid very well." Nor had his body, and the bullets had been a fantastic added touch as well though he didn't bother mentioning any of that. So Chance was a Sun? " s**t. Sounds like I'll be watching your a** for you than. Moon and Sun pairings are pretty standard around here. They call it "Eclipse"." He actually rolled his eye when he said the last, letting out a derisive snort. "Though I'm going to level with you. I'm not very good at my job...at least, not that part of it. If you need a human meat shield, I would appreciate it if you don't go looking at me to provide it." Might as well be honest with the guy now. It cut out any chance of disappointment later on. Finn stood very still, arms still open wide as he waited for the Sun trainee to notch an arrow and send it sailing his way. He figured that, visually, it might get his point across better. However, the arrow itself didn't fly as true as it could have, and instead of it hitting him full on, it simply grazed across his shoulder, and not the bad one. "Okay hold up. New approach." Finn let his arms drop, still smiling that cold smile, both hands clamping down on his lance before he suddenly turned and struck out at Chance with the scythe-like blade. HP: 49 Damage: 4

Chance's eyebrows rose high enough that they were in danger of disappearing into his curly black hair. "That's pretty ballsy of you," he said, and his tone was still mild, still level, as though he was incapable of raising it or lowering it to a different pitch. "But, like I said, it's pretty badass, and now you can tell me people you fought the man and made it out alive, right?"
He smiled, Asher murmuring something about making sure he didn't follow in Finn's footsteps and start questioning things he shouldn't.
"Eclipse sounds like a bad vampire movie or a cheesy horror one," said Chance mildly, shifting the bow again. "Syzygy means the straight configuration of the Sun, Moon, and technically Earth together, and it sounds a helluva lot better than Eclipse. Or, I suppose, if you wanted to go back to the roots, soluna works too."
But that was beside the point. Chance tilted his head slightly. "Good to know," he said lightly. "I'll make sure to find someone else to keep between me and the bad guys, though to be honest, you seem pretty sure of yourself just from a first glance."
It wasn't said in annoyance, merely a simple contemplation of the man across from him. Chance was already trying to string up a second arrow, since the first had been so abysmally lacking in both direction and force. He had only just barely gotten it in place, however, when he chanced a glance upwards and saw Finn's weapon slicing through the air towards him.
Chance didn't manage to escape the entirety of the blow, but at least he sidestepped just enough to keep it from smacking full on against his chest. As it was, the lance caught him in the hip, and he staggered, nearly losing his grip on the bow.
"Damn," he said, stumbling back to his feet and grinning at Finn. "So that's how that thing works."
The next arrow was slightly better aimed, though still not quite to the other's level.

"Yes. If ballsy in this case means stupid." He scoffed a dry laugh, reaching up to rub at the stubble on his face that he had let grow out again, thankful that the scars on the right side of his face didn't interfere with it too much. "But thanks, I guess." Seriously though, in this case, the "fight" against Caelius had been completely one sided, with Finn ending up dragged out, screaming, soooooo....No, he could never think of himself as badass in any sense of the word, unfortunately, but he had already said enough on the subject and most certainly wasn't about to admit to more, so he left it at that. Finn had to agree with Chance's analogy between the horrible given title of Moon & Sun pairs compared to terrible book or movie titles. It wasn't a description that he had ever felt was particularly charming, at least. He laughed again, but this time with more humor than the dry scoff of before. " Exactly" He replied, and it was in that moment that Finn thought that he might actually have found another person he could (shock and surprise) get along with on this god forsaken island. It had been a long ******** time coming, with idiot after ******** after windowlicker crossing his path and pissing him off. This guy, however...this guy seemed to actually be clever, and he was definitely amusing. "I am sure of myself." He agreed. "I am absolutely one hundred percent sure that I would rather survive, than die trying to save somebody else." Unless that person was, for some reason, incredibly important. Finn had yet to come across that person (Or so he thought. He hadn't actually been tested in that regard). "You know, one of the first people I talked to after waking up here held a gun to my head and let me know just how very expendable I was. She's...actually dead now." He realized, and shrugged his shoulders. Oh well, that shrug said. Finn had pulled back after striking, though that did him little good in the grand scheme of things when his opponent loosed an arrow at him, this time taking him in the arm, leaving him with a stinging sensation that soon faded away. "Pretty fantastic, right?" Finn asked, grinning from ear to ear despite it never warming his gaze at all. "You have to be careful though. Eventually, after sustaining enough damage, a Fear shield will break, making you just as susceptible to injury as you ever were before." He turned and swung his lance again. "Don't worry, though. This place is safe." He hoped that Chance didn't ask him to explain why. Finn wasn't stupid, but he wasn't exactly Deus technology savvy either. HP: 46 Damage: 3

Chance shrugged. "Even being stupid, it still means you had the balls to say something at all. I find that much better than just going with the flow just because everyone else is." Never mind that he was usually one to do exactly that. "You did s**t, and you paid for it, but you still did it."
But the subject had switched, and Chance didn't mind too much, because it was still interesting conversation as a whole, and Finn was relatively intriguing as a person. "I at least hope people are more creative on the field than they are at coming up with terribly un-clever nicknames for things."
A faint smile flickered across his lips. "Survival of the fittest, right?" he said mildly. "Gotta survive if you want to get anywhere in life. The guy that woke me up didn't hold a gun to my head, thankfully, but even if he had, it's not like I haven't been there and done that before. Still, he was pretty intense."
The arrow hit Finn in the arm, and Chance's brows drew together as he watched it smack into him, remaining there for a few seconds before dissipating into nothing. It was actually rather interesting, and a small hum of curiosity escaped his throat.
"Now that is pretty cool," he said, veering sideways as the lance grazed his leg. Chance restrung the bow and twisted to his left, yanking back on the wire and snapping an arrow in the direction of one of Finn's legs.

Flattery would get this guy everywhere. And here Finn had actually gone for several minutes without thinking about trying to get into somebodies pants. Even now, it was just a fleeting thought. Chance was cute, in a relaxed and care free kind of way. Interesting, in that he didn't immediately set off Finn's idiot alarm. But these past couple of days, the moon intermediate just hadn't really been feeling it. Really hadn't even been in the mood. He'd been too busy thinking over things, wondering whether or not he needed to do something about a certain someone.... His concentration had been distracted for a moment, but he managed to refocus, tilting his head slightly at Chance's words. "Who woke you up? Sounds like a man after my own heart." He mused, out loud, with a vicious grin as his weapon made contact, before he pulled back again, winding up for another quick blow. An arrow caught him on the leg, and this one actually stung a bit more than the others, surprising enough to make him stumble. He turned the momentary falter in his steps into a roll, coming up on Chance's left and pivoting on his feet, turning towards him even as he swung his lance again. "Nice shot." He complimented him. Chance found that he rather enjoyed sparring, even if it was taking a bit of getting used to. The bow felt cool and smooth in his hand, and although his movements were still a little unfamiliar and awkward, he was starting to get used to the weight of it, the pull of the arrow as he shot it.
Finn as well was equally interesting, with his eyepatch story and his smirks and his blunt honesty. The last fact was probably the most appealing; lying had never gotten anyone anywhere, as far as Chance was concerned, and he much preferred to be told the truth, even if it was brutal.
"Some guy named Jack," said Chance lightly. "Reading a history book. Intense guy, like I said, but I guess that comes with the job, right?"
The arrow had managed to hit its target, which was very pleasing, and the vague smile on Chance's face grew slightly less vague and slightly more satisfied. The trace of a grin passed over his lips and the lance caught his side, sending him careening sideways.
"I could say the same for you," he said, wheezing a little, and restrung the bow, managing to fire off another arrow in Finn's direction.
