Ever had borrowed a jacket from Taym -- tweed with patches on the elbows -- and had dug out his nicest pair of brown jeans to go with it. The result, when paired with a somewhat-faded collared shirt and his thick Life-issued reading glasses, was actually surprisingly professorial, even if the jacket was a couple inches too short in the sleeves.

The smoking, however, was not. He stood at the portal with his bag at his feet, prepared for several days' journey, a cigarette [as always] dangling from one hand. The sun in his eyes, it meant he squinted as his recruits approached, lit from behind so that it obscured their faces, only getting a faint idea of their shapes.

Ever didn't know who'd been assigned to this ridiculous mission. They probably didn't know, either.

PROMPT STUFF
The mission report gives you the location of a high school, a class schedule, and a profile. For those who look young enough, they get the opportunity to pose as a student. More mature hunters have to pose as substitute teachers. Instructions detail odd occurrences and at least one missing persons report. It's up to you to blend, investigate, and remove whatever is preying on the school.

Quote:

Day 1 : Blending

The school is mostly empty, except for those who are attending summer school classes. There's a certain eeriness to the empty halls that make the one's filled with students all the more jarring.

Roll 1 d4:

1. You're cornered by an aggressively inquisitive student: they want to know who you are, why you're showing up out of the blue, where you're from. You can accept them as an ally of sorts, to use in investigating the school. If you don't, they will continue to appear the rest of the mission anyway.
2. The principal calls you into his office and gives you a speech about how recently there have problems at the school, but that there is no need to worry. It becomes clear he suspects you are an undercover reporter. You see him periodically throughout the rest of your mission, nervously checking on you.
3. A teacher grabs your arm as you pass them in the hallway, pulling you into an empty room. They give you a hushed ultimatum: if you're here to make things worse or are just indulging morbid curiosity, then you can just leave. You can either play innocent and they will be constantly nearby and watching you for the rest of the mission, or you can give them some variation of the truth that will have them helping you.
4. Within the first few hours, you find a love note in your pocket. You being to feel watched and followed the rest of your mission, and other small notes and even gifts appear. They may be simply cute and innocent, but they may also have a sinister quality. This presence may help or hinder you.

Day 2: Investigation

Roll 1 d4

1. Shady Deals

Select one or several or all from these prompts:
- You overhear mention of the stuff from several students who don't notice you.
- You find someone frightened and shaking in the bathroom, but they won't tell you what's wrong or what scared them.
- You see a group huddled together, and glimpse money changing hands. Later you recognize one of them, hiding in a janitor's closet.

2. Potential

Select one or several or all from these prompts:
- You notice a student covered in bruises that weren't there earlier in the day.
- There's a notice on the bulletin boards about reporting any bug nests, as summer infestations continue to be a problem.
- In the basement, you find several areas covered in rat traps.
- A student who's standoffish is pointed out to you. They're considered weird/spooky/crazy and most people give them a wide berth.

3. The Exchange Student

Select one or several or all from these prompts:
- You notice a student who's seems a bit "off."
- In the locker rooms you find the remnants of something likely not human, be it hair, scales, slime, or some other substance.
- Several students leave giggling during lunch. When you seem them in class later, they appear pale and spooked.

4. Wild Card
Select your choice of the above prompts.

Day 3: Removal

Shady Deals
Your investigations lead you to a student selling small candies you may recognize as similar to FEAR candies to students.

Encounter

Roll 1 d4

1. The Dealer is a normal human student. They can be convinced to lead you to the one who gave them the drugs to sell. The person you find is someone who looks uncannily similar to another hunter, Obadiah Thompson, though he lacks the more recent scars. The man does not recognize you.
Mob:
Hunter Clone
HP: 60 + regen (it will heal constantly, blood being sucked back into wounds and sealed over as if nothing happened)
Auto Damage: 5
Special: Every time you do 8 or more damage, you may remove a limb. Remove 2 limbs, and you will capture the clone.

Should you fail, the person you encountered on Day 1 will rescue you. Roll 1 d10 to determine if they survive. (6-10 means they live.)

2. The Dealer is a creature of Halloween in disguise. Upon seeing you they try to run. Roll 1d20 to keep them from escaping, 13-20 is success.
Mob:
Dealer Creature (species/race is your choice)
HP: 40
Auto Damage: 3
Special: If you bring their HP between 1-5 then you may capture them and bring them back to Deus. Otherwise they dissipate when they hit 0.

Should you fail, the person you encountered on Day 1 will rescue you. Roll 1 d10 to determine if they survive. (6-10 means they live.)

3. The Dealer is a human student. They seem a bit older than most, and when confronted, draw a knife bearing electric yellow runes.
Mob:
Human Dealer
HP: 25
Auto Damage: 8
Special: If you bring their HP between 1-5 then you may capture them and bring them back to Deus. Otherwise they die, but you will still be able to retrieve their weapon.

Should you fail, the person you encountered on Day 1 will rescue you. Roll 1 d10 to determine if they survive. (6-10 means they live.)

4. Wild Card
Select your choice of the above prompts.

Potential
Your investigations lead you to believe one of the students is a potential hunter who is attracting dangerous attention.

Encounter

Roll 1 d4

1. The student doesn't come to school today. After checking their records, you find out where they live and go to check on them. What you find is a very quiet house, filled only with the buzz of flies as they gather around the bodies of the family within. After several minutes, several of the bodies being to move, and then stagger to their feet. Beetles crawl out their mouths and wounds, and you see small shapes moving underneath their skin. They move toward you.
Mob
Bug Puppets
HP: 10 x 3 attackers
Auto Damage: 2 per remaining attacker.
Special: If you miss twice in a row, you feel something enter your body, either through your eyes, ears, nose, mouth, or an open wound. Add 1 to your modifier every time this happens. (-7 instead of -6 and so on.) This does not affect charge attacks.

2. The student doesn't come to school today. After checking their records, you find out where they live and go to check on them. The house looks normal at first, but when you pass through the gate, you're faced with a family under attack. They have barricaded themselves within the house as a massive swarm of beetles tries to break in. You hear the warning sound of glass windows beginning to crack.
Mob
Bug Swarm
HP: 30
Auto Damage: 5
Special: If you miss twice in a row, a window breaks open and they begin to attack the family. For every three rolls you make after this, a family member dies.

Should your HP drop to 0, the person you encountered on Day 1 will rescue you. Roll 1 d10 to determine if they survive. (6-10 means they live.)

Should the potential hunter survive, you have the option of recruiting them. If they refuse you need to call for a memory blank for all surviving members of the family. A security watch will placed on the family, and their records will be sifted through for bloodline information, but your job there is done.

3. The student shows up at school, and with some encouragements, begins to talk about the things they see that other people don't. You have the option to either recruit them then and there, or leave if for another hunter to do later. If they refuse the offer, you need to call in to have the memory of this day erased. A security watch will placed on the family, and their records will be sifted through for bloodline information, but your job there is done.

4. Wild Card
Select your choice of the above prompts.

The Exchange Student
Your investigations lead you to believe one of the students is not human at all.

Encounter

Roll 1 d4

1. The student is actually human, with an intense interest in costuming, makeup, and special effects. You find out that most of the odd occurrences were in fact, a small theatre group of students, trying to create their own "found footage" movie within the school. The case has been debunked.

2. The student is a creature of Halloween. They are friendly toward you and mention that they are a member of DETH and ask many questions, some of them possibly of a moral nature. You can choose to try to fight them, but they will not fight back, instead either running away, or taking your attacks until they dissipate. If you want to convince them to be voluntarily weaponized, roll 1d20. 10 and higher means they come to Deus with you.

3. The student is a creature of Halloween and they ******** hate you. They attack as soon as they realize what you are.
Mob:
Creature Student (your choice of species/race)

Day 3: Resolution

The person who you encountered or Day 1 (should they still be alive) has witnessed you do some possibly questionable, illegal, or logically impossible things. It's up to you how you explain things and part ways with them.

Zac arrived with a slightly oversized sweatshirt he either owned or had borrowed, which made him look younger by merit of the idea so many parents have that ‘you’ll grow into it’. It also did a fair job of covering the tattoos on his upper arms, where the t-shirt he wore under it would expose at least part of them if he took it off.

He swept a hand through his hair to move his bangs out of his face and blinked, squinting as he came into view of the ‘professor’ and then choked off a laugh.
Ever, Ever was the ‘professor’, and the coat fit about as well as his awful bunny briefs.

“Kia Ora.” He said with a stifled laugh. “Were they trying to make sure no one got hot for teacher, Eh?” He grinned wider and shook his head.

He shifted his own bag on his shoulder and tipped his head, further examining Ever before glancing back to his face and shaking his head again.

“Are you leading this mission?” He asked tipping his head cautiously.

Peyton hadn't had to do a god damned thing to wardrobe or appearance to make herself appear age appropriate for this mission. Dainty, features delicate, and choice in style loud, she looked the part of the surly eighteen year old she had been a little under a year ago. Daisy dukes had been paired with a black t-shirt that read 'Jerk' across the front in bold white lettering, and a pair of worn leather boots seemed in danger of falling off stocking covered feet with every step she took towards the portal. Her hair, now well past her hips, had been drawn up into a pair of wildly fluffed buns on either side of her head.

An old bag was slung over her shoulder. Some army surplus duffle with sharpe scribbles decorating faded green. She'd packed clothing and supplies enough for a week, just in case, and on top of that she'd thrown a few thick books for the sake of playing her part properly.

"Yo Ever, Zac." Free hand rose to wave at the pair of them as she wandered up to them. A smile was flashed at Zac, but it melted into an all out smirk as she took in Ever's jack and glasses. "Young teacher, the subject of school girl fantasy.~" What could she say? If she'd had a teacher that looked like him maybe she would have cared just a little more about school.

Maybe.

For Ever, at least, it was a good look. Whether it was a good look overall was entirely a different question, but it was about the best either of them would likely see him look. He tipped his head a bit to look down at Zac through his glasses, and grinned at Peyton as she approached -- drawing once more on his cigarette before discarding it with an expert's easy little flick.

"I don't think I'm anyone's fantasy, but I guess I am the boss, this time around." For some reason. He looked dubious as he considered Peyton, higher ranking and stronger, but. Ever was the teacher, after all. He looked behind him to the portal, considering.

"You're just some pain in the a** delinquent teenagers." he offered it cheerfully, eyebrows raised, and then took a step away. "Shall we...?"

Zac gave an amused but quiet laugh at something ever had said, it had started as a grin when he’d said he was no one’s fantasy, but widened and become audible at being a ‘delinquent teenager’.

“Well I think I’ve enough tattoos to seem so.” He grinned. “I got a sharpie, anyone need some temporary ink?” He turned his gaze to Peyton with an amused spark in his eyes. Friendly more than impudent at least, since missions were serious after all.

“After you, boss.” He added, without, oddly, even a trace of sarcasm given the greeting that Ever had given him after they met. Smooth first meeting it hadn’t been in the least.

"Whatever, you clean up nice." That dubious look was met with almost bored neutrality. This was Ever's show, she was playing back up, and all leadership decisions would be differed to him until such time as he was unable to make decisions, or...well, she'd do her best to keep bossy tendencies to a bare minimum.

She did grin though, as Ever laid out their roles. "Well that won't be much a stretch." Back home she'd been a pain in the a** delinquent teenage, she wore the role comfortably. At Zac's offer for sharpie tattoos she chuckled, but shook her head. "Maybe later, I'm sure class will be plenty boring."

That was about it for pleasantries. As Ever made a motion towards the portal the small blonde fell into place behind him and stepped through.

At no point leading up to the school day did Ever mention to them that he had never actually attended high school: that his own experience was limited to a desk set up in a barn out back, his mother explaining too-softly how to diagram sentences. Sure, he'd done a few classes at college, but that had been proper college, had been serious college --

He was fully unprepared for a room full of sullen summer school kids. Sure, there was a lesson plan, a time table, even a handful of resources left by the regular teacher. Eleventh grade French and they were working on the imperfect tense, but within twenty minutes of the lesson, the kids had figured out just how fluent he was and had turned the conversation another direction.

"How do you say d**k then?" Came a snickering question from the front of the class, and Ever paused to think before giving the worst possible answer.

"...like a person, or like uh, the part of your anatomy?"

It meant that they got almost nothing done during the day other than learning curse words. At least Zac and Peyton could potentially learn the meaning behind Ever's twitter name, since Connard was the answer to that question. Somewhere between 'd**k' and '********' in severity, which Ever said with a completely straight face.

Hopefully they wouldn't tattle and get him in too much trouble.

At lunch, he'd slip out the back door to crouch against the building and smoke a cigarette. When the quiet-and-serious kid from the back of the class rounded the corner, he reacted immediately: holding his breath and moving the cigarette behind his back, out of sight.

The kid just stared at him for a moment: "...I'm not stupid."

All the same, it was another moment before Ever opened his mouth to let the smoke out, relaxing back into a more comfortable position and tapping off ash. He couldn't hide it, so he'd just have to commit.

"You're not?" Ever's own tone was dry and teasing, looking the kid over as he brought the cigarette back up to his mouth.

It didn't amuse the kid. Instead he scowled, folding his arms over his chest. "That was terrible. You're a terrible teacher. You're not even a teacher. Who are you, why are you here. Why'd they hire you instead of someone with three proper brain cells?"

It went on like that, Ever just blinking slowly, smoking and listening, his expression bemused as the student paced in a frustrated way. Conspiracy theories abounded, in this one, and he let them run their course. Once they stalled -- or, well, slowed at least -- he'd interrupt.

"Look, kid. I'll get you some worksheets, okay? And I'll look them over when you're done." A pause. "...ça va?"

A scowl, and at least the kid left him alone for a bit. Of course, it meant extra work: tonight, after class, he'd have to make some ******** worksheets.

Zac was, to be fair, more convincing at being a delinquent than he’d intended to be. Maybe it was his accent, or maybe it was the slang that he kept unthinkingly bandying about that drove the poor English Professor quite beyond the point of frustration. Or, perhaps it was the point where he suggested that no one in that room, including him was speaking ‘English’.

It was right when he was trying to exit the classroom, a casual slump shouldered saunter back into the halls with the boredom that was often associated with people who would likely drop out of school, or in his case, those who were beyond bored with repeating a tedious chunk of life that should have been well done with.

“I don’t know what you are playing at… but I can tell you one thing, if you came here out of some…twisted idea that you could gawk at our tragedy, you can go NOW, because if you think I’ll let you get away with it, you have another thing coming.” Was the hostile half whisper through clenched teeth, heavy with the smell of too much coffee, and an edge of antacid that said that Zac hadn’t been the first thorn in his side, maybe just the first one with such a strong accent.

He considered playing innocent, but there was something in the man’s face that said he really cared about what was happening at the school, not that he was just mad about the disruptions.

His mouth was a fine line before he let out a soft breath.

“… Nah mate… I’m here to help.” He said, and started spinning a tale about a friend of a friend who’d been involved in this whole mess. It was at best a sketchy story, but he left it vague enough to make it fit the age he was supposed to seem.
He wasn’t absolutely sure he’d managed to sell the story till the man finally let him go… he was pretty sure there would be bruises but hell, as long as it worked.

It wasn’t like he could just tell the man the truth anyhow.

Well that had been something of a joke. Not exactly the worst substitute run class Peyton had even been a part of, but it was down there. Which was not to say it wasn't entertaining, but if their goal was to be believable, tan she sort of doubted spending an entire class period more or less slacking off was wise.

But this wasn't her mission to run. She sat in the back of the class with Zac, more or less ignoring Ever and his lesson of popular insults and swears in french, and spent the time watching her fellow students.

Something the proved to be utterly useless, and in turn managed to catch the attention of an especially inquisitive classmate.

As the bell rang and the class was dismissed Peyton threw her bag over her shoulder and headed for the door, ready to make her way to a predetermined meeting place, only to find her path blocked by a slim girl with glasses. "Er..."

"You don't go here." It wasn't a question.

Peyton frowned, attempting to look affronted. "I do so. Transferred at the end of the school. Stuck here all summer due to a credit error. " Having actually had to deal with a similar problem in the past, she knew this was actually possible.

The girl squinted, not looking the least bit convinced. "I'd have seen you. This is the first time you've been here. What are you doing here."

Things carried on in this vine for several minutes until the bespectacled girl finally chose a more direct line of questioning. "You're here because that kid went missing, aren't you?"

Now, she could have lied, but she ran the risk of this girl tailing her suspiciously for the remainder of their mission. She'd really rather they manage to keep civilians out of it, as best as they were able.

So maybe a half truth.

"Alright fine. It's true. We're here looking into the disappearance, but we're undercover, so you can't say anything, alright?"

The girl gave her word, seeming both relieved and excited at the idea of having undercover agents at her school. If she only knew. Snorting in irritation, Peyton adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and hurried off to meet Zac and Ever.

Several students leave giggling during lunch. When you seem them in class later, they appear pale and spooked.

They could talk about it a bit after the school day was over: Ever's expression stunned at Peyton's announcement. Had their student been the same? If so, he'd missed an opportunity -- not that he'd mention it to her. No point making himself seem less competent than he even was.

Besides, he had to make those worksheets.

At least it meant he was moderately competent come the next morning, combining his students' desire for slang with an actual lesson on the imperfect tense. It was entirely inappropriate, but learning was done, an improvement from yesterday, and maybe they could just chalk it off to a newbie nervous in the face of so many teenagers.

Come lunch time, he'd wander a bit today, hands in his pockets: the bathrooms, some of the empty classrooms, searching for some out-of-place shadow here or there. Nothing. On his way back to the cafeteria he was almost bowled over by three laughing girls in short skirts. One was from his class and she batted her eyelashes to a disturbing degree as she passed.

They all lost it at his baffled expression.

He expected trouble after the break, but instead they came in looking drawn, quiet and serious: the flirty one, whether it had been teasing or serious, wouldn't even meet his eyes. And, indeed, the whole class seemed a bit more subdued.

Ever was a bit confused by the way they all just did their work.

He thought he'd started to get the hang of how this worked...

Day 2 –

Zac’s run in with the teacher was shared with the others, but it was far less amusing than the run in Peyton had had with the student that he had a strong suspicion was the –same- student whom had been so hostile to Ever during French class… he wasn’t positive though so he didn’t say anything. After all he’d been focusing on other things.

Zac paused before lunch to talk to some of the other people from around the school, among them a group of girls, short skirts and full of giggles and jelly bracelets which it seemed were ‘back in’, one of them kept hooking her fingers under a bracelet and tugging at it, smirking as he talked. She was the same one who reached out to touch his tattoos to ‘check if they were real’.

He told her that he thought the ‘Kinda cute new teacher had made eyes towards her’ with a grin. “I bet he’s got a thing.” He added with a wink, waggling his eyebrows to the shrieks and delighted giggles that ensued.

He watched with profound amusement as they passed Ever in the lunch room, the boldest girl batting her eyes less than discretely at Ever as they passed. Ever’s own expression in return, one of utter bafflement was tremendous, and absolutely worth the whole mess, and whatever the giggling gaggle thought of him personally.

Nothing seemed really odd till class again. Everyone seemed…

Well, off. He wondered if Ever would agree with his assessment, things were just a little –too- quiet. He cast a discrete glance at Peyton but couldn’t do more than that till they could meet up later and discuss what they found.

Day 2 -

After the whole ordeal the day before with being cornered and questioned Peyton was keen on keeping a low profile. Instead of her more colorful, flashy attire, she'd instead gone with a borrowed sweater from Noah. Half-life, she'd been told, it was orange and grey and hit her at about mid thigh, fitting like a short dress. Her hood was up, curls falling around her shoulders.

She'd assumed this would be more understated than her usual style, the sneers from the trio of girls she passed on her way to meet Zac in the hall before class. Brow arched, she met their hostile eyes before shaking her head. To Zac she murmured a lowly. "I don't get teenage, and I am one still."

She didn't know what Zac had been telling the girls, or that they considered Ever cute. She didn't know that the other girls felt threatened by her presence, and Ever's apparent familiarity with her. High school girls were ******** weird.

Peyton found it a relief when they showed up after lunch subdued, but that relief was short lived when their so-serious expressions didn't fade away after the first fifteen minutes.

Lips pressing into a thin line, she meet Zac's glance, shoulders rising ever so slightly.

The entire class seemed off, down and out, overly quiet considering the learning material Ever had provided for them. It was cause for concern.

prompt stuff!

Smoking again, after school on the second day, one of the girls would slide by -- still serious, nervous perhaps -- and as she did, Ever reached out to catch her elbow and pull her along to one side, finally taking it upon himself to actually do some investigation. She looked alarmed, and then embarrassed, and then slowly warmed up at the fact that his concern was genuine, but -- but. She didn't exactly give him any information.

She'd seen something in the locker room, was all.

That was it really.

"I mean, like, I've heard of people being born with tails, but..."

And she ran.

But it was something, at least, for Ever to take into consideration, and so hunted down Zac and Peyton, bright eyed, to take them with him to the locker room after dark, so they could go through all the girls' lockers. And by 'they', it would probably be mostly Peyton, digging and hunting until they found something a bit strange.

The Amityville symbol, drawn on the cover in rough, scratchy red sharpie, was the first giveaway. They flicked it open to page after page of notes on human culture.

_____

During attendance, they could finally put a name to the face: Ever about holding his breath when he said the name from the folder, eyes flicking around the room. All three of them would probably look at the girl, when her hand went up, searching for some sign of Fear in her, something that marked her as not human.

...it would take more approach, though. They could corner her after class.

endejester
I figured we could break this one up for some back and forth? just whatever, make it up as we go. biggrin

also, Ever won't try to force weaponize but either of you guys can if you want.

"I am doing this under protest." Peyton called it out to the two boys waiting outside the locker room, shimmying her way into another locker to root through the contents. It was a joke, of course. She didn't really mind, hell, there was worse she'd do for the sake of a mission than a little breaking and entering.

Since she wasn't sure what they were supposed to be looking for she was careful to examine each and every item she found. It was a job that threatened to last hours, but a little luck had her finding the notebook in only the sixth locker she looked in. "Hey, I got something!" Tucking the notebook under her arm she high-tailed it out into the hall, sliding a little on the linoleum before coming to a stop beside them "Look." She pointed to the cover, the familiar pumpkin symbol embossed on it. "That's the emblem of that damn school."

In class Peyton had made sure to grab a seat beside Zac so the both of them could flip through the book together. She'd paid attention during roll call, eyeing the girl that had enthusiastically thrust her hand into the air as her name had been called, but her attention was all for the notebook during the remainder of the class.

Any action they might take would have to wait until after bell.
