Harland was sitting at the edge of one of the training fields, leaning back and looking up at a nice day. It seemed like things had been too quiet. He had promised he'd practice some of the ideas he had for using Coyote effectively, and he hadn't quite had the time to, lately.
Harland smiled to himself for a moment. "It's not so bad, even with the dyin' an' all," Harland said aloud. He'd eat those words later, and if Deus had a way, probably literally.
☆≼You have the luxury of saying that because you are still alive, Cowboy,≽ Coyote said, amused at Harland's expense.
Harland was saved from having to think up an accurate reply when he noticed an unfamiliar Hunter. He pushed himself up, Coyote still summoned around one fist and part of his forearm. "Pardon me, a chailín," Harland greeted her, tipping his hat as he approached, "Name's Harland Leander Belle, an' I'm a Death Trainee; I was wonderin' if ye'd be so kind as to oblige me with a spar? No harm meant by my intrusion, an' hope ye'll forgive me for approachin' like this," he said, with one of his sunny smiles.

Paige wasn't sure she'd ever get the hang of a big ******** weapon. Harle was patient with her, so patient, blooms of blue and silver and pale greens washing over her mind. It was so relaxing, so gentle, and Paige couldn't get upset. Even when she accidentally buried him too deep inside a training dummy and couldn't quite pull him free - and it hadn't even struck her to desummon the morning star until Harle had spelled s**t out for her. Thanks for being so patient. The colors intensified, flashing and shimmering before dimming. She hadn't heard the approach of another hunter, so when someone called out to her, Paige didn't realize his greeting was directed at her. It took her a second. "Oh. Oh, you're talking to me? Sorry, cowboy," Paige wrinkled her nose and grinned. His smile was friendly, and he seemed nice. Was this guy for real? "I was kinda zoned out. I'm Paige. Emerson. Uh. Paige Emerson. And, yeah, we can totally spar. I need the practice more than I'd like to admit."

Harland was, in fact, "for real." Which meant that he looked and sounded like he'd walked out from a Western-- with good reason. Harland didn't even really know how to ride a horse, he had only seen them now and again during his childhood. When he had no one to turn to, when he was lost, Harland had started to believe that he could be a hero like the cowboys in his movies.
So he'd become one. In a manner of speaking.
"Then let's begin, Miss Paige Emerson. May I address ye as Paige?" Harland asked, tying his hat around his neck. Without missing a beat, he punched towards her with his gauntletted fist, not bothering to reveal the actual workings of Coyote just yet. [[Harland's Stats HP: 40/40 Charge: 1/3 Dmg: 2 ]]

"Sure, you can call me," she grunted as his fist caught her in the shoulder, "Paige," the blonde continued, tightening her grip on Harle's hilt. The weapon spoke in swirls of purple and magenta ticked through with gleaming silver, and Paige took a moment to glance down at her arm where she'd been struck. There was no outward damage, and Paige grinned up at Harland. "That's ******** cool, isn't it, cowboy?" Hoisting the giant morningstar up over her head, Paige brought the weapon down with whistling speed towards the other trainee. HP: 38/40 CHG: 1/3 DMG: 5

Harland didn't know what she meant, at first. "Your name...?" he asked, with an apologetic smile. The Death hunter was actually kind of slow at changing gears, honestly; he had so much to remember all the time, it was impossible to keep all the pieces within easy reach, so to speak. "Oh-- yes, it's amazingly useful," Harland said. He grinned at her, "Otherwise I would've been torn t' shreds by now, I imagine," Harland joked.
He didn't quite know how the Morningstar would be used, yet.
It turned out it packed quite the punch. "That hits hard," he said, as if surprised. "Pretty straightforward an' all," he added, assessing the weapon. "Are ye a straightforward kind o' person, would ye say, Paige?" he asked.
Honestly, so long as she kept calling him Cowboy, Harland would adore her. He was pretty simple that way. He was also pleased to find she didn't seem perpetually annoyed, or bitter, or boring. Pretty refreshing.
"Would ye care t' see what Coyote can do?" he asked, and flexed his gauntlet-clad fingers, before he leveled his palm at her, braced his forearm, and squeezed the pressure plate to launch his hookshot at her.

This was kind of fun, just swinging around a big a** weapon. It wasn't hard to hit things because Harle was pretty ******** big, and Paige looked pretty pleased with herself. When Harland asked if she'd like to see what Coyote was capable of, she wasn't entirely sure what he was talking about. It wasn't until he held up the weapon and a hooked chain shot out that she realized that Coyote must be his weapon. "I guess you could say I'm pretty straight-forward, cowboy," Paige agreed after the ranged attack hit her. "What about you? No sense in beating around the bush, you know? Might as well get straight to the point." Paige immediately whipped Harle around in a half-circle, the sharp points of the weapon screaming towards Harland. HP: 33/40 CHG: 2/3 DMG: 6

Harland smiled. He was thinking about himself, about his nature, about what it meant to be a straightforward person. Paige might be, but he hardly was. "I can appreciate that you're that kind of person," he said, "and I would say I'm honest, but... I'm patient, an' if I can take a little longer t' arrive at a destination in a pleasant way, I'll do as much," Harland said.
He paused, nodding. Yep. That summed it up, without being a lie.
He forgot they were fighting, and raised his arm up at the last second to try to deflect the huge morningstar. It wasn't very successful. He winced as the blow fell. "Just a force o' nature with that, hm?" Harland said. He pulled Coyote back into his gauntlet, but didn't hit her on the way back.

"Seems that way, cowboy," Paige replied cheerily, the force of her swing bringing her around and causing her to stumble. She let out a soft laugh and paused to grin over at Harland. "I haven't ever been too patient, myself," she admitted, still smiling. "I'm all about working hard and working fast, you know?" HP: 33/40 CHG: 2/3 DMG: 0

"Not much, no," Harland replied, smiling back at her. Talking to Paige was nice, Harland decided. "I'd like t' pretend that I'm like a spider in its web, bein' patient an' waitin for all the right things to fall into their places an' make my life easier," Harland said.
"In reality, that's more Alistaire's thing-- I'm just sittin' there smilin' an' hopin' the sun keeps shinin' on me one more day so maybe the next day when the light comes up it'll be a different sight before me," He said.

Pausing briefly to ruffle her fingers through her hair, Paige chuckled softly. "I knew a guy like that once. Swear to God nothing ever phased him. One of the most infuriating people I ever met, but he was so laid back I couldn't ever really get mad at him. You like that, cowboy?" Paige swung her weapon, Harle flooding her mind with gold and blue. "And who's Alistaire?" HP: 33/40 CHG: 3/3 DMG: 3

He thought for a moment, thinking she looked kind of like a bird when she ruffled her hair like that. Then he thought about if he was the kind of guy like that. He remembered all the times he'd lost his temper with Alistaire, or felt hopeless, or wanted to push him up against a wall, and figured: "Nawh, not much like that," he answered, seriously, nodding his head.
Then he realized that he'd casually let Alistaire's name slip, instead of the other way around: normally, he was all too eager to tell people he had someone he loved. This time he'd accidentally done it the other way around; let the name fall, without any information as to who that was. "Hmm? Oh, Alistaire, ye'll see him around I'm sure," Harland said.
"He once stabbed Oliver'n the thigh, 's far as I know, so ye might want to not let Grimshaw near ye.. though I honestly suspect ye'd give him a run for his money," Harland said, and started to laugh. "Which's a good thing," he said, his eyes tearing up. "It's fun t' spar with ye, even if that weapon's a bit on th' large side," Harland teased her. Coyote gloated internally at the indirect compliment. He deployed the razorwire cable and lashed it in a sort of x shape, whipping it back and forth.

Paige probably looked like a damn fool as she made attempts to dodge the cable that flew at her - and for a second, she was damn certain there were actually more than one cable whipping around her. "Sounds like a nice enough guy," Paige joked, swinging Harle kind of haphazardly. She delivered nothing more than a glancing blow. "I gotta say that weapon of yours is something else. Haven't ever seen anything like that before," she hefted Harle up, "though to be fair I hadn't ever seen anything like Harle here before, either." She paused for a second. "I bet there's all kinds of weird weapons here, huh?" HP: 27/40 CHG: 3/3 DMG: 1

Harland was, again, proud of Coyote. It made sense that he'd attract such a strange hybrid weapon, honestly, and it served all kinds of purposes outside the regular combative ones. He could use Coyote to move, use him to pull things, use him to whip and damage. He could use him to protect, too. A really versatile weapon. But maybe all weapons were versatile depending on who wielded them.
"I look forward to seein' all the different weapons," he admitted, before he pulled Coyote back with the pressure plate, steadied his arm, and pointed his palm directly at her chest.
He let Coyote's hookshot fly true. Nothing quite like a pressurized metal claw.[[HP: 25/40 CHG: 3/3 Using his Battle Cry T2 FEAR. DMG: 15

Something strange happened when Paige was hit - Harle flared to light in her mind's eye, swirls of crisp and vivid crimson licking at the back of her skull. It felt hungry to Paige, and while she reeled back and very nearly stumbled, she managed to catch herself before she went down completely. The runes that decorated Harle's surface sparked to life, and Paige attacked without a word, unleashing hell on Harland's shield. It felt good. Harle was immediately satisfied, dimming to quieter tones of pink and white. He felt satisfied. Paige grinned. "Me too," she said, panting softly. HP: 12/40 CHG: 0/3 T2 BC DMG: 11

The colours thing would have intrigued Harland, if he knew that's what went on in Paige's head; he would have been sad for her, in his own way, though. He loved talking to Coyote, he would be so frustrated with just colours and swirls and lights.
Everyone was different, anyway.
"Hits hard," he admitted, with a wry smile following a grimace as he tried to brace himself with his gauntlet-clad fist again-- after all, Coyote's gauntlet could only dull the effect so much. His shield still sparked and he knew it wasn't going to last much longer.
"Pretty even fight," Harland remarked, surprised. Not because he thought Paige would be easy, but because he was honestly used to doing a bit better.
