Trine: (21, 70)
** Base map taken from here **

Trine is located in the interior of the southern continent, along the shore of the largest in a chain of three fairly large lakes. The geographical lowlands have resulted in a hot, humid environment with frequent rains, especially during the Wet Season. The lakes themselves drain two massive rivers into a single one and after the winter in the south has passed, floods can sometimes happen down stream.

Situated south of Southern Weyr, Trine was among the first of the Weyrs to fully embrace Aytpical dragons. It is now the largest of the Weyrs on Pern, thanks to its outdoor structure. Because it is not located in a rock structure of some sort, Trine's community lives in a village that ranges back into the forest and along the beaches. Individual weyrs are constructed as the need arises and so weyrs dot the shores of all three lakes. The large size of Trine has resulted in the need for multiple Dining Halls, Infirmaries, Storehouses, and other such facilities located in each of the segments around the lakes. After the failure of the Twelve Districts solution for the overpopulation of Trine, other planners have brought a newer vision to Trine's layout that works much better. Goldrider Weyrs remain fixed structures towards the heart of the Weyr, where a bustling market has developed.

With the larger Weyr comes a greater need for food and other resources. As a result, Traders and Craftsmen have begun to make trips or request transport by dragon so that they might hawk their wares to the many citizens of Trine.

The Hatching Grounds are in the center of these buildings and are sectioned off with ornate fencing. Originally only one location, the advent of multiple clutches at the same time created the need for a separate ground for the expectant mother to guard her eggs. As such, there's a secondary, and now a Tertiary, Hatching Grounds just on the periphery of the Central Complex where additional clutches may be laid.

Weyrling and Candidate Barracks range out on either side of the Central Complex so as to keep the new initiates close. Because there are large numbers of Candidates on hand almost constantly now, there are multiple Barracks for each with overflow locations situated further out. These overflow locations double as storage houses when not in use.

The prey herds have a range that includes some forest and a great expanse of grassland that was once forest to the southwest, along the river. With the larger number of dragons come large herds, and there is pressure to continue to expand out and slash and burn the forest to make way for grazing pasture. The lakes are fresh water and warm all year round, and are teeming with bright fish and crustaceans that dragons and people alike enjoy eating.

Trine has been at the epicenter of world changing events for nearly two decades. As a result, it is a melting pot of many different political viewpoints and life paths. Generally accepting of all individuals, Wherhandler, Dragonrider, or Weyrfolk, Trine has made an effort in recent years to show that the lessons of the Wherwars have taken root.

Ranking officials gain their office through election every 4 Turns and hold it only so long as they have the good faith of the people. The Weyrwoman and Weyrleader are often elected from seasoned riders or officials, though current modes of thought tend to favour more youthful individuals. As of yet, no one has been taken out of office due to non-confidence.

Debates and oratory have come to dominate the social spaces with groups of traditionalist and modernists alike coming together to discuss the future of Pern. Questions like 'is the new system working' and 'how can we expand' are popular topics.

Healthy competitions are also on the rise as sports become a way for veteran soldiers and new blood alike to burn of aggression and energy. Trine's role in the World Games is a central one as a founding member and is home to some of the largest teams on Pern.

Wealth has come back to Trine and it bustles with traders, crafters, and weyrfolk. The Weyr itself looks more like a city then a collection of sand beds and buildings.

Trine Weyr is capable of housing 750 dragons comfortably.

Beholden Holds
Eron Hold – Largest and wealthiest Hold in Trine's Territories. It benefits from being the gateway to Trine itself, often serving as a port-of-call for ships from the west and north. It deals mostly in fishing, exotic southern fruits and vegetables, and hardwood exports. Holders from the North often take time to enjoy a cruise up the river to Trine Weyr as a means of holiday and travel.

Iteos Hold – Founded when an intrepid exlporer of a Holder settled on the coast at the mouth of a River, Iteos serves as the gateway for the mineral-rich Aquor Hold further south. It's a dirty port, specializing in minerals and gems from the southern mines.

Aquor Hold – Isolated Aquor Hold is the southern most Hold in Trine's Territory. It has the unfortunate honour of being the only Hold in said territory to experience biting, severe winters where snow and ice are normal. The people of Aquor mine the nearby mountains, which have proven to be a rich source of Firestone. The people of Aquor are rugged, hardy, and tough. Aquor must do frequent trade with its more northern neighbours for food and supplies as the south isn't as welcoming.

Atlini Hold – Another coastal hold, this far-off Hold was its founding Holder's attempt to match, and outshine, Eron Hold. Unfortunately this did not work as intended and though Atlini is near the ocean it does not benefit from much trade. Sailors occasional put in at the hold on the way to Eron, but Atlini offers nothing that Eron does not already. As a result, Atlini is very much a subsistence-living hold.

Ursul Hold – Almost as isolated at Aquor, Ursul Hold prides itself on the farmland that surrounds its major hold and on the quality of wood products coming from its bustling forestry industry. This is a hard working community more interested in tending the land then in the politics of wealthiest Hold. It gets by, thanks to the bounty of the river floodplain. And flood it does, almost annually, enriching the soil each year so that crops are bountiful and bumper crops are not uncommon. It ships most of its wares through Atlini and the two are on good terms, though neither are particularly wealthy.

The following are the views that Trine Weyr has on some important topics.

Death: Death is a normal part of life in the Weyr and is treated as a personal choice - especially for riders. Death is to be mourned but it is not a shattering event and people are expected to honour the memory of the dead.

Suicide: For riders, it is an accepted (and indeed normal) reaction to the death of their dragon. Most are broken souls after the loss of a dragon and choose to die rather the live without their lifemate. Usually, they will ask to be taken Between (and left there) or go Between if their dragon is capable of it. Suicide among the non-rider community is frowned upon, however, and neither encouraged nor condoned. Healthy individuals, whether they be riders or not, have no reason to want to suicide.

Homosexuality: Homosexuality is an accepted thing among the Weyrs. Homosexual relations can and do happen as a result of Flights, and are not discouraged outsife a Flight situation. As a result, Weyrs are often sanctuaries for homosexual individuals who wish to leave the prejudice of the Holds behind.

Sex: In general, sex is a non-issue in the Weyr. What one does with one's body is entirely up to the individual. It is also accepted that while some riders may choose to become weyrmates, sex resulting from Flights is not cheating. In the Hold's however, promiscuity is frowned upon and is usually seen as a mark against a person's character.

Marriage: There is no marriage among the riders in the Weyr. Riders can choose to become weyrmates, aka long term boy/girlfriends, but they are comfortable with their weyrmate having multiple partners. Marriage among non riders is rare and usually ocurrs because an individual is Hold born. Marriage in Holds is common and encouraged, though children outside marriage is not frowned upon.

Children: Children are cared for by the community and cohesive family units are exceptionally rare among dragonriders. As Flights can sometimes result in children, the concept of family is a loose one at best and many chidlren grow up not really knowing their parents. Female dragon riders are not encouraged to take a child to term. Children of non-rider couples are normally raised in a more normal family unit. And in Holds, it is a terrible thing to disown a child or leave one unclaimed - family units are strongest there, there the children grow up in a defined family.

Abortion: Abortion among riders is common, and expected. Female riders rarely carry a child to term as most choose to go Between in the early stages so as to prevent a pregnancy or an inadvertent miscarriage. Non-riders in weyrs can ask to be taken between at any time, and is not frowned upon. Abortions in Hols are a highly taboo action. A woman is held responsible for her actions and the resulting child if one is conceived.

Female Dragonriders: Trine Weyr has had difficulty accepting the gender roles of women and men among the riders. Crimsons Impress to males and females and that, in a world where the Gold Impress only women, had caused many to rethink their beliefs. As such, women at Trine Weyr are viewed as nothing special - they're expected to work just as hard as the other riders and get no slack for being women. Some might say this attitude has resulted in a harsher, more formal environment for all riders at Trine.

Atypical Dragons: Enough Turns have passed since the incorporation of oddly coloured dragons into Weyr society that they're no longer a remarkable surprise. However, they are rare and are special - each possessing a trait that makes it unique. In general they enjoy prestige equal to, or slightly greater then, the dragons of their equivalent size (ex. black => green/blue). The exception are the Crimsons who dance a double edged sword - they're respected as bronze dragons are but those who choose to breed instead of fight are under pressure to successful clutch. In general, atypical dragons are welcomed curiosities.

Retirement: Retirement for Dragonriders is both hoped for and feared. If you live to reach retirement, you've managed to survive the worst that Thread could throw at you... or you've been grievously injured and forced into early retirement. Retired dragons from old age are uncommon and usually consist of elderly Crimsons or Golds that no longer mate. If you manage to survive threadfall for a long time, retirement is generally earned by those with Dragons of at least 30 Turns of Age or by a rider that is 50 Turns of Age. There is flexibility depending on vitality, enthusiasm, and skill in those twilight years.

After Retirement, dragonriders generally take up support positions, or now that the Fall has happened, they try for office. Some retire into Hold communities and some turn their attention to tinkering with old Crafts.

Post Fall of the Golds: In the Post-Fall world of Trine, Golds no longer hold power and are treated like most any other dragon. That is, they're expected to pull their weight, earn their glory, and get their hands dirty with the rest of everyone. This also means, however, that all colours have the opportunity to prove their merit and earn both respect and power in the Weyr.

Golds still fly in the Queens' Wing, at the bottom of the fight, but their training has been improved and advanced to include a few riskier maneuvers and more strict, time demanding approaches to fighting Thread.

On Benden and Malvren: Benden is an abandonned Weyr now, left vacant but for a few non-rider families to serve as a pilgrimmage destination and reminder of all that was lost - and won - in the Wherwars. Most riders do not like going there because it reminds them too much of the strife they endured for years. Goldrider Abigail oversees operations in Benden, a figurehead only, providing protection from Rogue Queens while hosting pilgrims from all over Pern. Benden has become a sort of learning center, where history is taught first hand and the weight, and strength, of the Dragonriders is on full display.

Malvren is no longer a recognized, functioning Weyr. It is the Headquarters of the Rogue Queens and due to its isolated, lonely location it has been left to the Rogues. Not much is known about the island continent beyond that it attracts all manner of shady individuals and that its Rogue Queens clutch well but Impress poorly, loosing significant portions of the clutches due to lack of Candidates. They prey upon other territories all over Pern, stealing resources, luring Bronzes and Browns into mating flights, and plunging fighting wings into dissarray when the Queens command their territories be protected. However, the memory of the Wherwars in fresh in everyone's minds and the Weyrs are reluctant to resort to violence to deal with the criminal queens, instead fending them off and driving them away as needed.

Ranking Characters
Ranking PCs are now included and marked where appropriate.

Senior Officials
  • Weyrwoman & Dragon: L'anen and Silver Duputh
L'anen is a charismatic women with a vision of equality for all dragons and riders. She is particularly wary of Wherhandlers, having lost a sibling and a lover in the Wherwars. Also a veteran of the Wherwars, she knows what it is to survive strife and has risen to power with the promise of never letting such tyranny gain a foothold again. She is a powerful public speaker, blessed with a political wit that makes her a force to be reckoned with at a bargaining table.
Jr. Weyrwoman: N'ash and Crimson Netunnuth (shadda)
Jr. Weyrwoman: Nawa and Black Rioth (meep)
Jr. Weyrwoman: [NPC] R'ale and Silver Ayzeth; R'ale is a man of few words but calculating wit. Sharp as a tack, R'ale prefers to listen to the need or want, weigh it fully, and then present a fully considered solution. Logical, cold, exacting, and truly a man of word, R'ale is also known as the Ice Prince.

  • Weyrleader & Dragon: D'dita and Bronze Esuth
D'dita is a cool, sharp individual with a tendency to prefer the more traditional approach from before the Fall. That his counterpart rides an Atypical dragon irks him and he strives to temper her ambition in nearly all things. He does agree, however, that never again should a tyrant take Pern hostage. He is heavy handed with his punishments and exacting in his requirements of the wings.
Jr. Weyrleader: A'nos and Bronze Acriculeth (tawny)
Jr. Weyrleader: [NPC] W'old and Silver Taiechith; W'old is an older man who was retired forcibly when Thread took an arm. Dour, sober, and confident, he takes great pleasure in wielding the power of the law to full effect. He's smart, honourable, and chivalrous but prides himself on his impartiality in judging cases.
Jr. Weyrleader: [NPC] C'sih and Blue Chaburyth; A dedicated woman who absolutely adores record keeping and paperwork. She's a glutton for knowledge and boy does she have a lot of it! Practically a walking library, it's a shame she's a bit of a gossip.

  • Candidatemaster & Dragon: N'new and bronze Igekoth
N'new is a kind man, very much in love with his job. He makes an effort to ensure every Candidate is well prepared, no matter at what point they join the Candidate ranks. He takes great pride in his Candidates doing well and is an excellent role model. N'new took up this position after the political view of metallic dragons shifted, giving him the opportunity to pursue a leadership position that did not involve marshalling dragons or contending with contempt from fellow bronzeriders.
Assistant Candidatemaster: Malta and Green Poecileth (draconic)
Assistant Candidatemaster: V'ail and Crimson Lanterneth (shadda)
Assistant Candidatemaster: [NPC] T'as and Green Denranath; T'as is a retired rider, the result of a broken wing that didn't heal quite right when they'd newly become full riders. Since then, he's been a devoted mentor and a father figure, taking pleasure in giving sage advice and supporting the youth, stoking their dreams.

  • Weyrlingmaster & Dragon: Z'fil and blue Uwuth
Z'fil is an energetic, enthusiatic, and exacting woman. She fell into the role of Weyrlingmaster with about as much grace as a wherry in water but as disorganized and eccentric as she is, Z'fil is a dedicated individual with no bias towards colour and an honest desire to see every dragon that comes through her barrack grow as big and strong as possible. She has a healer's background and thus is often the first stop for any injured or worried Weyrlings. Her skill with flight also ensures new dragons learn surprising skills during their training - some say she is unmatched, and indeed her blue is among the top contenders at every Dragon Games they've attended.
Assistant Weyrlingmaster: Carwyn and Green Alaith (Alethyria)
Assistant Weyrlingmaster: Natai and Gold Iachixth (Nozomi)
Assistant Weyrlingmaster: Mercy and White Aerith (JetAlmeara)
