Since joining this guild I've wondered what is a nerd? Yes, it can certainly be a label whose definition has changed with time. What do you think a nerd is? Their is no wrong answer here. I'm curious as to what people think about this special group of people.

Here is my definition:

To me a nerd is a better than average intelligent person who actually cares about others. They are eccentric people with special talents and a lot to offer the world. They have a big imagination and do things that help make the World a better place. Yes, they are misunderstood but when it's time to do something that matters they step up to the plate and get it done. They are the thinkers and problem solvers of the World. Without them the World would be a different place.

I'm proud to be a nerd and I'm all of the things mentioned above and then some. I care about people and treat them all with respect no matter who they are. One of my greatest Loves is Science. I took every Science and Math class in junior high and high school. I Love to explore the World around me and do things that I feel make the world a better place. I would like to know what all of you think a nerd is and why.

I think of myself as more of a geek than a nerd, because I think of nerds as being more academic, the kinda person that spends more time studying or researching then socialising. I know the differences between geek and nerd is blurry and some people view it the opposite way round (geeks as the academics) or as both being the same thing. The way [I believe] this guild uses nerd is the way I use geek.
And my definition of a geek is someone who is someone who is somewhat obsessive over things outside the main stream (games, scifi, fantasy, comics, anime, steampunk, larping, etc.). We are easily immersed or invested in fictional worlds. Creative but not necessarily artsy, but more we think creatively, able to find unique solutions to problems. Not always academy smart but we like to challenge our brains, and even in our down time prefer activities that make us think.

I like the way you think and your definition of a Geek and a Nerd is very enlightening. I consider myself to be a Scientist and Love studying everything so by your definition I'm a Nerd. At the same time though I Love to think outside of the box and can be very creative. Also I when I do socialize I tend to be a great story teller about things in the real world and in the imagination. So by your definition I'm also a Geek at times. I Love a good challenge and yes I can obsess about it until I get a satisfactory answer. As for this guild I feel that it's a little bit about both.

That's kind of how I've seen the difference between nerds and geeks, too. A nerd tends to be more academic (so I'm a science nerd, for example), whereas a geek is more attuned to popular culture (I'm a sci-fi geek).

Another subsection I'll throw out there is gear-head. This refers to someone who's interested in different types of gear, and the technical aspects of it. This usually talks about either a car person or a sport/hobby that requires a lot of gear (I'm the latter).

So I guess I'm a Geeky, Nerdy Gear-Head. ^^
