Pink Tubby Custard
I just started working at a local bakery about three weeks ago, and today an hour into my shift they called me in to tell me that I was fired because I called in sick half an hour before my shift started yesterday and that I still wasn't working fast enough for them. Now my depression is really setting in badly and I feel absolutely horrible. How do you cope with being fired?
Just about the exact same thing happened to my girlfriend. She was working as a baker and was laid off about one and a half months after starting. She had called in sick for one day and had been making several mistakes of which her co-worker had been keeping track, apparently. She was called in to her boss's office, and she was there, reading off the entire list before she was dismissed. She was just a smidge away from crying, and it took everything in her to not break down right there. She's struggled with depression for many years, and her being let go is still affecting her, especially since she still doesn't have a job after months of looking.
As to how to cope with it, you need to just let go. You were really invested in it, but your employers felt that it just wasn't working out. It's sad, undermines your self-confidence, and stressful now that you have to find another job. But these are temporary setbacks that you'll eventually rebound from. You should only feel offended if there was an area in which you were slacking off. The remedy? Remember not to slack off next time. The key words are "next time". Don't think about what you shoulda coulda woulda done differently. Think instead only about the future, and do not let a dismissal sway your confidence in your abilities. Everyone is good at something, and I'm certain that you have your own special talents.
