Three seasons ago, the precious treasure of Silme Pond was discovered by the quirky daughter of the goddess Artemis. A goddess of her own right, Portia was tasked with keeping the sacred life-giving water safe. Curiously, she found oysters in the magic pond. And if that wasn't bizarre enough in itself, Portia also discovered that each oyster is a cradle for a delicate and rare little pearl.
These are not normal pearls. Once they leave the safety of the pond's waters, they begin to grow and change color. Once mature, it turns out they aren't really pearls after all.
Shortly after the discovery, deep in Ithyl Forest one night a young Naiad girl happened by the pond and discovered the oysters. Not knowing any better, she brought her "catch" and treasure home to Tuatha'Ri Lake. The oysters were recovered by fairies and returned to the pond, but it was too late.
The pearls were out of the magical waters long enough that they couldn't go back. They began to grow.
That left the unwilling goddess Portia caring for a small army of newly hatched sprites to care for.

The little ones had emerged from the Pond at the New Moon, which was when Portia was at her most irritable. So that's what they turn into... she thought, cocking her head staring in disbelief as tot after tot crawled out of the Pond and shook themselves off. It never occurred to her to help them. It just wasn't in her nature.
Her disbelief turned to abject horror when the little ones--a veritable army--crawled straight up to her on their chubby little limbs and made grabby hands for her to pick them up. "No....no!" she exclaimed, picking her way through them. "I'm not your mother--go away!" Quickly she closed herself up in her hut on stilts. They were animals, just like anything else. They'd go away if she ignored them, right?
Not right.
Not only did they not go away, after a while they began to wail, an unholy sound that finally broke Portia's resolve. "FINE, fine," she said as she burst from her hut on stilts. Tentatively she picked one up. "Ugh," she scoffed in disgust. Infants were so squishy. Why children? It could've been anything but children and Portia would've been delighted to have an army of them. But children were useless! "Why do you things eat anyway?" she asked, peering at all the beady little eyes around her.
Eventually she took all of them into her hut on stilts. They came from her Pond, after all, and it was her job to look after the Pond. Therefore, she concluded, these chubby beings were extensions of her Pond, and she must look after them. At least until she could find them proper parents. Or something. Each of the little ones was unique in color and temperament, and it wasn't long before Portia began to know their dispositions and preferences. She gave them all names, because names were what separated us from animals, after all. Fed them, bathed them, told them bedtime stories.
Even after many moon cycles, Portia never thought of herself as a mother. She knew the little ones couldn't stay. The Pond was her duty, not motherhood. And so, once they were strong enough, and not an hour later, she turned them into dragonflies and sent them on her way to find proper parents. As the last of them buzzed away from her hut on stilts, Portia sank into her bed, alone at last, and smiled for the first time in many moon cycles.

Portia has been caring for many young sprites over the past three seasons and it definitely was not in her job description! Now that they were old enough to be shooed away find other pae to pester, they were turned into little dragonflies* and sent to find new parents.
Telrunya had an unexpected sprite population boom! This is a contest to find homes for some of those sprites and errr... take them off of Portia's hands.
Background Information:
Portia is the Goddess of Silme Pond, daughter of Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt. She's usually harmless, protective of her charges. She is played by Menelie. The sprites hatched at the pond, and grew from infant to child under Portia's care. The only pae'il allowed to live at the pond is Portia. The sprites should have no desire to return to live there, nor would Portia allow it. (They can visit their 'birthplace' for nostalgia reasons later if you so wish) Any Pae can adopt one, and their final form will be determined if they have a land or water dwelling parent.
Rules:
Create a character that fits in with the background story Pick a gender Pick a name that would be something Portia might name the child. Portia would name them something to do with their appearance or nature-themed Pick an inspiration pic Assign an adoptive parent (or give a valid reason for not having one) Describe the character's fatal flaw** - hint: consider how this character will be as an adult. Fill out the rest of the form and post entry in this thread.
Dates:
Starts January 29th, 2015 9pm EST All entries must be dated before Feb. 6th, 2015 at 11:59pm EST Winners will be announced after the Venus Day event. (This allows time for judging and artists to create the sprites. heart )
Name: Sprite's Name: Sprite's Gender: Adoptive Parent: Fatal Flaw: Inspiration pic: (please use a spoiler tag)
*The dragonfly transformation is a temporary spell cast on the sprite children until they find a parent they want. **Creating a fatal flaw forces characterization better than a questionnaire, so that is why we're going to require it for this contest. The more creative and fully developed, the better the chances of winning.

Name: wiccan_faillie Sprite's Name: Allie Sprite's Gender: Female Adoptive Parent: Agnes Fatal Flaw: Narcoleptic - it is a disorder that makes the Sprite sleep at any time when her heart rate shoots up.
It all started when she first met Agnes…
Exhausted but contented with her catch, Agnes sat down at a nearby trunk and released the foot of a dead boar that she’d been carrying on her back. “Whew! Now that feels good.” She rested her head on a branch and looked up in the sky. On the far west was a thick cloud that is shaped like that of an oyster. It was a huge shell with a child sleeping on the very center. Agnes closed her eyes and smiled in appreciation of natures beauty when a dragonfly rested on top of her fnose.
“Oh, that tickles!” Agnes giggled. When Agnes opened her eyes to know what that was, nothing was in sight. She brushed the curiosity off and grabbed the dead boar when something warm touched her antler and kept on tugging it.
What Agnes saw made her heart skip a bit. The child's eyes were beautiful and different in color. Left eye is a beautiful shade of pastel pink while the other is as blue as the sky. This is Laisidhiel, home of the Fauns, how could a child whose so different from us be doing here? Agnes thought.
Agnes took the child away from her antler and placed the creature next to her. Agnes was being extra careful as she does not want to damage the child’s sparkling wings and while the child was staring at Agnes’ hooves, Agnes tore the boar’s leg using her teeth and offered it to the child.
“You must be very hungry.” Agnes assumed.
The child’s eyes widened in delight! She wasn’t offered this kind of meal from before. It was always berries or fish from the pond.
"What’s your name?" Agnes asked.
The child’s face turned blank and shrugged her shoulders. She took a small bite of the drumstick and was surprised with how good it tasted! She gobbled up everything, until only the bone was left. Agnes laughed at how fast the child ate everything. She showed her the boar and told the child that she could eat as much as she wants.
The child was overwhelmed with Agnes’ generosity. She was really starving! She went all giddy, hopped in circles and "SLEPT"… *pauses for suspense* while standing up.
Agnes jaw dropped in disbelief. “She must be joking… No she’s not!” Agnes panicked, left the boar laying on the ground and cradled the sleeping child on her arms. Agnes placed her hand towards the child’s chest to check if she is still breathing, peace came coating Agnes heart for the child smiled while sleeping oh so soundly. It was as if the child knew in her heart that Agnes is worrying so she gave her assurance that everything is fine.
While Agnes was walking her way back to The Great Tree, the child still in her loving arms, she was reminded of this ancient story that Mother Pae’s used to tell their little ones. It was about a girl named Alice who always gets the best kinds of dreams. (Alice in Wonderlad)
“Your name will be Alice but will be called Allie by many.” Agnes whispered on the child’s ear.
“I will talk to Chief Rais as soon as we get there, he can be very protective of our race but nothing to worry little one, I am sure he would approve of someone as gentle as you to live with us. Who wouldn’t?” heart
