It was late – far later than Henry normally invited friends over – later than he would have normally called it a night, to retire to reading in his room until exhaustion took over. The nurse felt wide awake, eager and all too pleased with himself. He had planned the meal for days despite its simplicity, an evening full of quiet talks and contented discussions with only each other as company. Was it too romantic? Too plain? Excited nerves rumbled within the man.
Ethiriel had long retired, herself, preferring her own company as the hours drew late. She was still damaged, still wounded – she required her time and Henry was more than willing to supply in any way she needed, be it physical or mental. She wanted to be alone, and as selfish as it was it suited the man’s own needs for the evening. Still, he was forever open and ready to help if she called. The Frei was doing well despite everything in her life, and as long as she was healthy and, for the most part, content, that was all the man needed.
Gabe had left for the evening to do some unannounced errand or chore that he had given himself. Part of Henry worried that he was out getting into his own form of trouble but he couldn’t linger on it for long, not when there was a knock at the door.
A long grin formed on Henry’s face as he quickly made his way to the door, opening it wide and excitedly to see his companion for the evening waiting on his step.
”You made it okay!” he said, his voice an all too eager bark.

Candice was also rarely a woman of social nights, at least, not as of late. It'd been a long time since she'd made plans for an excursion for two; all of her social interactions seemed to be at faculty parties and meetings. She was overjoyed when Henry extended the invite for an at-home dinner and a chat. It was simple, but that suited her perfectly.
Her evening this day consisted of preparing herself for the dinner, and making something special for Henry. She chose to wear a simple chiffon dress and a cardigan, with a coat for the night cold. She made a batch of marbled blueberry cheesecake, just for the two of them. She held the dessert in a tray covered in aluminum when Henry greeted her at his porch-- she was all smiles and every bit as excited as him, though she had the practice of keeping herself calm.
"Hey!" Candice greeted-- her voice was light, and she grinned as fog left her breath, one hand clutched to her purse. She let go of the purse and held her cheesecake tray with one hand, then extended her arm out to offer Henry a friendly hug.
"I did, thank you for inviting me over. I hope you like cheesecake," she smiled wide at him and offered him the tray, too. "And blueberries."

Despite how simple her attire for the evening was, Henry couldn’t help but stare at Candice with admiration. With a smile, he stepped away from the door and held his arm out to display the hallway connected. ”Please, come in! Dinner’s almost ready – and I absolutely love cheesecake! It’s honestly one of my favorites,” he gushed.
He had dressed rather simply, himself; a dark pair of slacks with a white, long sleeved button-up. Henry had neglected shoes, wearing a pair of white and gray socks in their stead, but he didn’t pay much attention to them. Candace was free to remove her shoes if she pleased, but the nurse didn’t mind either way.
”I hope you found the place okay, I’m not the best at giving directions.” he said with a soft laugh, careful not to disturb Ethiriel in the other room. ”And I really hope you like pasta. I made the cliché; spaghetti and meat sauce with garlic bread. It’s always been my brother’s favorite, so I’ve gotten pretty good at making it.”
Leading her away from the door, they walked a few feet down the long hallway and entered a door to the left, leading to the living room and dining room. The table was set in that expected, romantic way – wine glasses with a chilled bottle in a bucket, nice plates situated in front of half pulled out chairs and topped with a small display of candles in the middle. There were no flowers arranged; instead, a bouquet rested delicately on the back of the couch.
”It’s just us, tonight. After dinner, if you’d like, we can watch a movie or just… talk.” said Henry, his smile relaxing as he looked Candice over with fondness.

"Oh, good! I really hope you like it, then." She smiled up at Henry before stepping into the foyer-- she couldn't help but brighten at Henry's charming little choice in attire. To match his socks, she pulled off her flats and chose to walk through the house in her tights. She rarely saw the opportunity to at others' homes, and the cold against her feet was strangely refreshing.
She looked around Henry's home and sighed with both relief and joy-- she looked back at Henry and nodded, her arms carefully wrapped around the cheesecake tray. "I did! Oh, shush, your directions were fine."
Candice whiffed the air and closed her eyes-- she could smell the warmth of the garlic bread already. The brunette opened her eyes again once Henry walked by, then followed him to the living and dining room-- everything was perfectly set, and she was relishing every little detail. "Mm... well, clichés are just fine by me, then," she grinned warmly at Henry, "I'm sure it's all delicious."
She covered her mouth with one hand when she noticed the bouquet on the couch-- oh, she was grinning like an idiot, to be sure, but flowers-- he'd thought of it all. She laughed quietly, too-- both for the courtesy of the other house occupant, and out of sheer joy. She turned toward Henry with the intent to give him a hug, but glanced down at the cheesecake in the way. Quickly, she put the tray on the coffee table and extended her arms out toward him for a hug.
Candice buried her face against his chest, her arms wrapping tightly around his waist. To be sure, she was growing a bit pink, as this hug was more than friendly-- it was genuine, and she was bursting with a kind of wamrth she wanted to share with Henry. "That sounds great," she replied, her voice muffled against his chest, "Thank you so much, Henry... this is all so thoughtful."

”I’m really glad to hear that,” Henry chuckled. He beamed when she finally noticed her roses, expression softening as she turned back to face him. She was so precious – he was more than pleased that she seemed to be enjoying herself. The nurse watched as she set the cheesecake down, nearly offering a hand to help.
The hug – oh, the hug; it was so nice, so welcomed. Unexpected at first, his eyes widened and his grin faltered but the man was quick to take it in. Her breath on his chest was nice. Henry closed his eyes and wrapped his muscular arms around Candice’s delicate frame, his cheek resting atop her head. She smelled nice, as always, and he took a large whiff.
One hand rubbed the woman’s back. ”It’s nothing, really… I’m just glad you’re here to spend the evening with me.”
Henry didn’t want the hug to end at all, but with a gentle kiss planted in Candice’s hairline, he pulled away. The food was practically ready and he’d need to finish preparing. Oh, how he wished it could have lasted longer.
”You can go ahead and sit if you’d like; I’ll be out with the food shortly!” Henry said, holding a finger up as to gesture waiting. He ducked into the kitchen for a short bit. There was little left to do – pour the water from the pasta, pull the bread from the oven, but it was all done quickly in excitement. She said she would like it and he hoped to God that she would. ”How was your day?” he called from the kitchen, eager to keep up conversation.

Candice: -pulls away and closes her eyes with a soft smile at the kiss-- when Henry excuses himself to the kitchen, she glances to the side while blushing before taking a quiet seat at the kitchen table. Grins- “I can't wait, I'm starving!” -crosses her legs and hums- “Oh, it was a little hectic, but I'm sure a day at school's nothing compared to the hospital floor...”
Henry: –laughs, emerging from the kitchen with the pan of sauce- ”It’s not really a big deal; most of the time I’m with the kids so it’s usually pretty fun!” –as soon as he sets the sauce on the table he ducks back into the kitchen to pour the pasta and pull the bread- ”Anything particularly juicy happen? I can’t imagine working at a school.”
Candice: -smiles wide up at Henry as he walks to the dining room, hands rested together over her lap-- she laughs a little- “Well, we both work with kids-- and they're always a delight...” -she turns to face the table, though her eyes are still on Henry as he works- “But my supervisor, ugh. She's a handful. She's very new, so she's trying to change a lot of things around the office... have I told you about the spring hike yet, Henry?”
Henry: –with the pot of pasta in one hand and the pan of bread in the other, finally comes back into the room to set everything down. Already has the wine and water set on the table- ”That does sound like a bit of a pain. Maybe once she’s used to everything she’ll calm down?” –takes the opposite seat from Candice, wiggling his behind into the pillow of the chair with a grin- ”And no, you haven’t! Please, do tell?”
Candice: -closes her eyes for a moment and hums at the incoming smell of warm and pleasant food- “Mm, Henry, this smells amazing.” -looks back up at him with a smile, despite their conversation; once he's across from her, her smile only widens- “A little a lot, you could say... oh! God, I should have... I was going to invite you and Eth to it! We're planning a little hike over at a camp for the kids... it would be over a weekend sometime in March.” -frowns a bit- “Well, if Karen doesn't cancel it, at least...”
Henry: –beams at her compliments, offering a small bow while seated- ”That sounds like a great time – I’m sure Ethiriel would love to come along! I know I would!” –adjusts in his seat before reaching over for Candice’s plate to pile on some pasta, followed shortly by sauce- ”I certainly hope she doesn’t cancel it, it sounds like a great time!”
Candice: -watches as Henry fills her plate, then grins at him- “I know! I hope you two can come, it'd be so fun. You already have a way with kids, I'm sure, and the kids will love Eth. No doubt about it!”
Henry: ”I’m sure she’ll love them, too!” –places Candice’s plate down and starts filling his own- ”She definitely needs to get out of the house more, this’ll be a perfect opportunity!”
Candice: -smiles wide up at Henry once she receives her food- “Thank you!” -while waiting for Henry to finish serving his own portion, she hums and nods- ”Yeah... you know, I would love to see her more often, whenever she's able. She seems like such a sweet girl.”
Henry: –nods, his smile widening before taking a quick bite of his own food- ”I’m sure she’d like that, too. It’ll be easier once things warm up.”
Candice: -takes up her fork to work at some of her pasta; with a soft smile, she nods- “I'm sure they will soon, you've been working so hard.”
Henry: ”Gotta do what I gotta do!” –eats a bit more but covers his mouth with his knuckles before swallowing- ”You’ve been working really hard, too. Maybe during the summer we could do something fun? Just the two of us?”
Candice: -she covers her mouth while looking up at Henry, quietly chewing and listening, then swallows and nods happily- “Mm, that'd be the best. What would you like to do?”
Henry: –chuckles happily, placing down his fork and knitting his fingers together- ”Hmm… Maybe camping? Or we could just go on a road trip. I’d be fine with anything so long as it was with you…” –grins, blushing a little-
Candice: “Too bad most of civilized Gaia is so small, or I would take you up on that road trip in an instant.” -smiles at him, though, and blushes in return- “BUt camping... that sounds really nice. Just you and I, we can find somewhere pretty by one of the lakes...”
Henry: ”Yeah, I guess you’re right… I hear road trips in the States are something else.” –rests his elbow on the table, then his chin in his hand- ”That sounds absolutely lovely. We’ll have to keep that in mind, for sure!”
Candice: “God, it is. I wish I could take you...” -smiles wide at Henry and gives him a bashful little laugh- “Now I'm just wishing that summer wasn't so far away...”
Henry: ”Maybe someday you can.” –pauses, reaching sheepishly over for Candice’s hand- ”It’ll come soon.”
Candice: -blushing, she reaches over for Henry's hand and knits her fingers with his, fingertips tracing his knuckles- “I hope so.”
Contently finishing up their dinner, Henry did a quick pre-cleaning of the dishes and table before leading Candice to the couches to curl up and enjoy a movie. The nurse, being his cliché self, set up one of the more emotional movies that one could consider a chick-flick – he really enjoyed them despite the flack they tend to get from other males, so he enjoyed it just as much as Candice. For most of it, Henry had his arm draped over Candice’s shoulder while holding her hand with his free one. The movie was over and the credits were playing.
Henry: –gives her hand another gentle squeeze, as well as squeezing Candice’s shoulder with his arm- ”It’s not often I get to polish off these movies, I’m glad you came to watch with me!”
Candice: -laughs and looks up at Henry with a grin- “Of course, Henry! It's been such a long time since I watched a movie like this. Family movie nights are always so full of violence, my brothers are so gung-ho about picking their titles.”
Henry: –chuckles- ”Not my cup of tea, usually; though action can be good every once in a while!” –adjusts so his back isn’t bent against the back of the couch as much- ”I’m much more of a relaxing-movie type, and you gotta consider what kids should be watching, too~”
The rest of the evening was spent with easy and continuous conversation: food, movies, books, common and different interests -- whatever came to mind. It was quiet and pleasant, their time together well spent as they enjoyed each other's company over all else. After some nerves were swallowed by the both of them, they had explored innocent cuddling and tokens of affection.
As well as their first kiss with one another.
