Lost.
He found such an irony in the fact that it took the complete and utter destruction of his home for him to discover the beautiful world that lived beyond it. How could he have been so blind? He knew why. Master was why. But now, Master was gone, long-dead and rotting in the rubble with the rest of his old pack. Now, he wandered the new lands that had been previously non-existent to the young adult.
Everything was new, and quite foreign. In his old pack, he knew the land inch by inch. He grew up with the same wolves, the same Master, the same walls every day of his life. Now, it was like learning how to walk and talk all over again.
It had been a month since Quinn got lost. A month since he made the decision- the only decision that he had ever made, really -to escape the confines of his old pack. That land had been the only land he'd ever known, and now it was gone. Forever, he had told himself, with a tone of finality that he still wasn't completely sure about. Was he lonely? Or was he freed?
Was he an orphan? Or a refugee?
Neither, Quinn decided. I am a survivor.
A growl from his stomach interrupted the brief confidence of his inner monologue. And I'm hungry.
With his new-found independence also came the realization that he was very new to the realm of self-sufficiency. He had never hunted for himself before, and had been relying on the leftovers of other wolves- among other creatures- for food. And there usually wasn't much left. He had yet to see another wolf, but the scents of those around him made him uneasy and nervous. Would they be kind? Or would they be like Master?
He only hoped that they were inclined to share a meal with a hopeless stranger.

Perdicas was finally starting to feel more relaxed and at home in these new lands. Or at least he had been until Penthesilea had announced that she would be the one to be watching over him today while he attended duties. He had gotten used to different Sisters watching over him since they had settled in this area but this was the first time he had the Queen escorting him about. It was nerve wracking! He wished his father was here to help him, because if his father was here then Perdicas wouldn't feel as overwhelmed by the Queen's presence. His ears were practically glued to his skull as he dragged the hide and bones through the trees. He had to perform his duties perfectly in the presence of the Queen. Not that he slacked off in his duties, no he would never do that and Perdicas was definitely his father's son, hardworking and loyal to the pack.
He was nearly to the spot where they buried the leftovers from the meal. The deer carcass he dragged was fairly small but it kept catching on roots and other objects poking out of the ground and so it slowed him down a bit. With a few more tugs he pulled it free once more and then dropped it to the ground. Now all he had to do was dig a bit, place it in the hole and cover it up, then he would be escorted back to the main pack area to attend the rest of his duties. His paws dug into the ground, fairly easily as he went about his task. It had been a while since Penthesilea had done any sort of slave babysitting duties. But in this new land she wanted to ensure that everything was well and safe before letting any member of the pack run off freely. For the time being a rule had been instated that no one was to venture to the border or beyond without being accompanied by another. And that was how she ended up watching over Perdicas today. She had been rotating the Sisters through the duties of watching over and escorting the various slaves as they ventured out on their duties and today it was her turn to watch one of them. Though she would rather be attending to her other duties or getting in an extra round of training with some of the others, she would not shy away from this task even if she was the Queen.
Her senses were alert even if her posture looked relaxed. This new land had so far proven to be a good place to settle with very little other wolf activity nearby but she knew that would not last forever. Eventually another wolf would come along and they would need to be dealt with. "Quickly Perdicas, there is much to do today." She called out to the slave a few paces away from her. Honestly though, Perdicas didn't need much in the way of orders from her or the other Sisters, he was a very good slave to have around, much like his father. Her eyes scanned the area around them, her nose scenting the air. Her head lifted slightly and she took a deeper breath. It was faint still, a good distance away, but the scent was right. There was another wolf and it wasn't part of the pack. Instantly she was on her feet and moving closer to Perdicas. "Another approaches." She said quietly enough so that her voice didn't carry. "Continue on as if you are unaware." She didn't want to frighten him but at the same time she didn't want this to interrupt his work.wibbliewobblie timiewimie

The tantalizing scent of deer carcass drew a deep longing from the sandy-colored wolf, near-instantly causing him to drool and face the direction it came from. He was so hungry. So hungry, in fact, that the foreign smell of strange wolves didn't register in his mind until he was already moving. Untrained paws beat loudly on the leaves as he carried off at a tired trot towards the promise of food. But was it a promise?
The thought stopped Quinn in his tracks.
Maybe I should turn around and take my chances with leftovers, he thought. They might not be willing to share, or they might hurt me if I meet them there. Can they smell me too? A thousand scenarios seemed to race through his mind at once. Being beaten, attacked, even killed because he made the wrong move. And then another thought hit him.
What if they were nice? He had never seen a wolf outside his pack before. Maybe Master was the only mean wolf. Was that naive of him to believe?
Probably, he decided. But if I don't eat a real meal soon, I might not ever get the chance to find out.
Shaking paws, Quinn headed again in the direction of the mysterious wolves. He could tell that there were two, with slightly similar scents. But he couldn't really figure out anything else. He could sense that there was more information given by their smell, but he just didn't know how to translate it. Perhaps he would learn with time. He came closer and closer towards the source, until he was sure he could hear the sound of something dragging on the dirt behind the wall of bushes and trees. Did they know he was there? Perhaps he should say something? Would he startle them?
He sat down, hesitant and shaking. His ears tucked against his skill, tail between his legs. Maybe he should approach them this way, the way he used to in the old world. That was all he had ever known, anyways. He sucked in a deep breath, and crawled forward through the bushes, careful to appear in every way submissive. After all, it was in his nature. This way had always pleased his Master.
"H-hello?" He called from the safety of the bushes, not yet sure if he should approach without consent.

Perdicas had nearly finished digging the hole when Penthesilea stepped closer. His heart began to beat faster, just having the Queen this close made him a horrendous bag of nerves. Then she whispered to him about someone approaching and Perdicas was certain that he heart was going to explode in that very moment. It was easy enough for Penthesilea to tell him to continue on as if nothing was approaching but Perdicas could feel his legs start to shake as he tried to focus on digging once more. Don't look up, don't run away, he mentally told himself as his paws fumbled through the dirt.
He knew he had little to worry about. Penthesilea was the greatest warrior in the pack and she could save him from anyone. But the fact of the matter was that Perdicas did worry, for if he hadn't needed to do this task then the Queen wouldn't even be in this possible danger right now. He swallowed hard and glanced from the hole he had dug to the pelt. Should he proceed with putting it in? He didn't want to be too preoccupied with his work should they need to flee. No, he corrected himself, Penthesilea would never run, she will stand and fight. Slowly he lowered his head and moved to pull the carcass into the hole. She could see her words had indeed interrupted his work, but Perdicas was the nervous type and she wasn't surprised by it. Even so, she kept an eye on him as he continued on with his work while watching the forest ahead. She could hear the loud clumsy footsteps of the one who approached. Until her, this intruder did not have the years of skill and training required to move through the forest while making almost no sound. The rustling of the bushes wasn't all that far away, but it was enough distance between her and the stranger that she could leap into action if she was needed and not have to worry about Perdicas being in the way.
She watched the bushes move, caught the slightly hint of a hide moving among the branches and leaves. They may be acting submissive but Penthesilea was not about to drop her guard, wolves could act the part until they had gotten close enough to show their true colors. "Hiding will do you no go." She called out to the wolf in a firm voice. "I do not take kindly to strangers slinking about in the bushes near my pack lands." She was standing at her full height, tail held high behind her. There would be no doubt when the stranger looked at her that she was a powerful wolf.wibbliewobblie timiewimie

Fear struck through the young male's heart, and he thought again of turning around and fleeing. But he also felt as though someone had stuck his paws to the ground. "I'm s-sorry. I didn't mean to intrude on your land." He stuttered out, trembling so much that it was hard for him to speak. He tried to breathe deep, but found his throat significantly tighten as the fear spread from his belly to encompass his whole body.
"I'm-" He began, and could have sworn tears pricked his eyes. What did he think he was doing? He never should have left the old lands. He couldn't even bear to speak other wolves, even now that he was free from Master's fury. He fought the urge to roll over onto his back right then and there. Maybe if these wolves didn't like him, they could work quickly and put him out of his misery.
No, Quinn thought. I've made it this far.
Throat still tight, he tried again: "I'm very lost. I'm not from here. I don't know where I am." The words came out rushed and panicky, all in the same breath. "Is it okay for me to come out, M-" His brain made a hard stop. Master. I almost said Master. Had he even changed at all?
He sat silently trembling, awaiting a reply from the ominous wolf.
