He was given the task, trusted with it, to wait and give the word when time ran out. He wanted desperately for them to return before that was necessary. With each passing minute, time slowed even further. He frequently checked his phone for a text and the time. He tapped at his new laptop, drew in his sketchbook as he worked on his new training courses. But the longer he waited, the less he typed, the less he drew. The less he could concentrate on anything but the worry.

He didn't want to lose more friends. Please, no more. Too many kept dying.

Clerise,

Sam,

Rin,

Nevada.

Now, Taym and Kostya were running after America. He'd learned not to believe in 'everything will be fine'. That was a silly fairy tale of a thought, now. He knew better.

His stomach hurt. His hands shook. He hadn't touched his lunch, set aside and going cold and stale.

Cami had been somewhat in a world of her own, a bit of a whirlwind, since she and Taym had finally started working on what she now saw as their goal for Deus. It wasn't surprising that she'd become the face of the operation, so to speak, because Taym was just s**t at it. He had a good heart but his mouth always seemed to get in the way. That and his ******** bad attitude.

Still, Cami wasn't so wrapped up in thinking about the next training session of cute little newbies that she didn't notice Otto. Never would she understand how or why things worked between them the way they did but it was like a sixth sense. Certainly it reached up to immediately squeeze at her heart.

Walking over to where he sat, fingers reached up to tangle in the messy ends of his lengthening hair. Lips pressed a kiss lightly against his cheek, a greeting as well as a demand that he acknowledge her presence. "Hey. Did something happen?"

He was pulled from his thoughts, blinking slowly as he phased back into reality. Cami's soft and comforting presence was a welcome change from all he'd been imagining. His mouth twitched, a slight grimace in response to her question.

"It's nothin'." He lied, badly. He'd been sworn to remain silent. He'd keep that promise. "I don't feel good. That's all."
PostPosted: Sun Sep 07, 2014 7:56 am

Had he not looked so out of sorts Cami would have swatted Otto for lying so horribly to her. There was a part of her that wanted to be angry that he was keeping secrets. They were best friends, always together, and they were supposed to share everything weren't they? A nagging thought at the back of her mind reminded Camille she hadn't told him about her nightmares. Didn't know that he soothed her in her sleep.

Years of mental training to accept what she was given and not ask for more, respecting the choices of others over her own needs, had her just resting her chin on his shoulder instead. One arm half-cuddled Otto so that she was nestled against his side. "Well that's obvious but I was worried it was something more serious." Okay, so she was pushing. A little bit. A tiny nudge only! But this was Otto and there was only one thing on this whole island that was anywhere near as important as he was to her.

It was more serious. Or at least, that's how it felt. Kostya wouldn't have taken the precaution of warning Otto had it been anything less. But while Otto trusted Cami, telling her anything would betray Kostya and Taym's trust in him. Otto took his oaths and promises gravely serious.

"Nothing serious." He murmured. His laptop was lightly shoved further away on the table. "Just working too much lately." It wasn't a lie, per say. He did work a lot. However, he enjoyed working on his project. It filled him with purpose, even if it tuckered him out.

He leaned into Cami's shoulder, and took comfort that she was there and breathing. Safe, warm and real. He wished Maebe were there too. Though in all honesty, Maebe would more likely just tire him out with her sass and energy.

"Just tired."

Fingers began to skim through blond hair as he spoke of being tired, relaxing as he curled back in against her. It was impossible for Cami to be stressed when she felt so very much at home, though she still had a little niggling concern that something bigger was going on than he would tell her. Nothing was perfect, though, and Deus Ex was far less a perfect place than just about anywhere else. Otto would tell her in time, or, he would figure it out on his own.

"Did you wanna go throw ourselves under the blankets? I wouldn't mind hiding from the newbies for a bit." Her ignorance had her grinning, making a joke that was perhaps inappropriate. "Thank God that Taym found me. Can you imagine him having to deal with all those obvious questions?" Lightly she kissed his cheek again, this one less a demand and more a comfort.

"Missed you today." Missed him every day. For someone else it would have been worrying that she missed Otto whenever he just wasn't there with her. For Cami? It was comforting. She had someone to miss. Someone to miss her.

Life was so good.

A hand running through his hair almost always calmed Otto down. Usually it was enough to put him to sleep. But today it only helped quell half his nerves. She mentioned Taym, and he felt an alarm in his chest. The ones who were gone may not have been best friends, but they were cherished none the less.

"No, it's fine." He murmured, disinterested about hiding inside a cavern of blankets. Cami's company only kept his nerves in check. They did nothing to stop him from worrying. Did nothing to keep him from forgetting to check his phone every few minutes.

"How about a movie?"
PostPosted: Sun Sep 07, 2014 8:30 am

Could he see her concern? Did she care? It knit her brows for only a moment before she was able to smile. "You know me, I'm always up for wasting an afternoon in the dark." She wanted to make a joke about how, if he played his cards right, they might not even see most of the movie. It was one she definitely would have made on another day. Today? Today seemed like a good day to snuggle up while he worked through whatever it was that was bothering him.

"It would not, however, go amiss if you were to put Twister in. I'm just saying." Did he need a distraction? She could be one. She could be brilliant and wonderful and comforting and anything he needed.

Well...almost anything. But since he hadn't asked for Maebe she figured that Otto wasn't all that interested in that sort of distraction at the moment.

Otto liked Twister. He loved disaster films. They weren't scary in the ghoulish sense. Just exhilarating in a way only nature could achieve. Yet he felt badly. He put in the movie and sat back down, and every moment that passed, he kept worrying. Here he was, safe yet not even working. How could he let himself get distracted and enjoy anything when something terrible could be happening to so many he cared about? America and Kostya both took very good care of Otto in times of need. What had he ever done for them?

All he did now as wait, as he was told to. Wait until time ran out. When it would be too late.

His stomach did flips and turns. One of his favourite movies ticked on by, and Otto felt worse and worse. Otto never got nervous or twitchy watching this movie, but today he sat on the curled into the corner of the couch, biting his nails down till the skin turned red. His eyes weren't really looking at the TV at all. Maybe he'd out it on to distract Cami from worrying about him more than actually distracting himself.

This was a disaster and not in the movie sense, unfortunately. Otto only seemed to become more and more anxious as they sat on the couch, chewing at his skin until it was almost raw, making her want to reach over and grab his hands to stop him. There was no distract Cami from worrying. Cami worrying about Otto was one of the things she did in life.

Fingers toyed with the heart at her neck, thinking of the names she'd gotten engraved inside so that they could never be forgotten. Never be lost. "Otto." Her voice was soft, unsure of herself, because she was breaking a cardinal rule. Otto was worth breaking rules for. "Honey, what's wrong? Please, I'm worried about you." A light hand reached out to touch his wrist so that it could be pulled away from his mouth.

Scooting closer, sitting on her knees, she lightly rubbed her hand over the top of his arm. "I understand if you can't or don't want to tell me everything. You don't have to. But can I help? At all?"

He wasn't tempted to tell her anything. Not at all. Telling her wouldn't have helped him anyway. It wouldn't help anyone. It was the waiting that killed him. The longer he waited, the closer the deadline came. If six hours came and went with no word, his worst fears would be made real.

He stopped chewing on what was left of his nails as Cami ushered him not to. He only wished he could fake how he felt, or have some way of making Cami worry less. He had to tell her something. Give her something to do or say. Hunters generally didn't get sick without some terrible cause, so he couldn't pretend to be ill. Besides, then she'd drag him to an infirmary. Not smart.

So, could she help? Otto didn't believe anything would calm or distract him until he heard back from Kostya. What could possibly make him feel better from now till then?

"Nothing.." He lamented. Nothing to be done. If only he'd kept his head together, he wouldn't have worried her. "All this.. survival training stuff I work on.. um. I just keep thinking about s**t that's gone wrong." He'd tell her why he was bothered. Sort of. He'd tell her part of his worries, but not the one that mattered most critically.

"You already know I known a lot of people who've died since I been here. Every now and then I think a little too much about it. No matter how much I prepare new hunters, it won't really matter. Some s**t just... happens. No matter how prepared or careful they are."

Oh. Oh. Hands fell away to sit almost limply in her lap before they folded, remembering how they'd looked after she'd been torn apart by fire. Remembering the feel of Medea's hand in her back and thinking it was the end, that she was done. Narrow misses, all of them, each worse than the last. Considering he kept checking his phone she wondered if he was waiting to hear from someone on a mission. Or maybe he was just checking up on everyone.

"That's this life, isn't it? Waiting. Worrying. Going out into danger and not knowing if you'll see home again." Subdued Cami was a strange mood to her, still, but it was becoming more and more familiar to her. Looking up a bit she wanted to reach out to Otto, to pull him against her chest, but thought better.

Thought better for three seconds before she gave up and tugged on him anyway, the lanky blond falling into her soft curves. Arms held him in a tight hug for a moment, her face buried against his hair. "I love you, Otto. I wish I could make you feel better but I'll do whatever you need. If I need to go away, or find someone, or find something, just tell me. Okay?"

It was a sucky life. At 16 he'd joined, not taking an ounce of what his recruiter said seriously. It was simply a way out. Knowing any better wouldn't have saved him anyway, even with hindsight. It was one crap life for another.

He sank into her grasp. He always felt loss, and was subjected to pain every year at Deus. Yet through some mercy, he always had a net. A safe place to fall back. He was never really alone. He'd never fall apart so long as he had someone there to catch him.

And Cami, as well as Maebe, were his safety net.

"Okay.." He uttered softly, his arms wrapping around her middle. "Try to distract me or something... All else fails, I'll just take a walk."
PostPosted: Sun Sep 07, 2014 9:32 am

s**t. Cami could feel the color creeping up the back of her neck at the idea of distracting Otto. "Ah well uhm..." Oh this was going to be good. Otto would be able to sense her hesitation and even mild awkwardness from the color on the back of her neck, starting to creep around her ears, blue eyes shifting away and not quite looking at him. "My usual way of distracting someone is ah..." Raising her hands so that he could see them, she made a crude gesture that made everything obvious.

Obviously she was going to just have to think of something else.

Otto watched the crude gesture, his expression caught between amused and judgemental.

"You and Maebe are both horn-dogs." He remarked bluntly. "You solve everything with sex."
