You should talk to him, Ferros said.
It's not going to do any damn good. Jordan swung at one of the training dummies, bringing Ferros down overhand to flatten it, gritting his teeth at the crunch of wood, like and unlike the crunch of bone.
It might.
Not when I'm angry. I can't think straight when I'm this angry. I'll ******** it up worse. A sweeping, half-sidewise stroke, batting the debris across the grass like it weighed nothing at all.
When you're less angry, then, Ferros insisted. There was a moment of shared silence as they strode after what remained of the dummy and brought the hammer's head down to crush the remaining bits of wood, feeling the interplay of weight and momentum and the stretch of muscle, a sense of self that would have been meditative if it hadn't been filled with a sense of burning, prickly, frustrated fury. You must not avoid this. I do not want to stand on the edge with you again and know that I have failed to protect you.
Jordan stilled. I'm sorry.
I am too, the dragon answered.

Dylon strode onto the field, smiling happily and breathing in the September island air. Jordan, Jordan, what dude was Jordan? Dylon was in need of practice and training, and the Sun hunter seemed up for a spar.
The young man was finally spotted finishing off a dummy.
"Yikes! You don't mess around, eh? That poor guy had family!" Dylon summoned Vahn, just to be prepared. "You the man to talk to about a spar?

Being addressed made Jordan startle slightly, even though he'd issued the sparring invitation on Twitter. He hadn't really expected anyone to take him up on it, not when he was this obviously in a bad mood, though he'd half expected Rep would decide that that invitation was for him, and had been bracing himself for the inevitable shouting match when he refused. But this was someone else. He turned, putting on an amiable smile. "Hey, it was talking s**t, there's consequences for that. I'm the guy, yeah. Jordan." He shifted Ferros's handle into his left hand and held the right out for a handshake. "You ready for a fight, then?" He smiled toothily and nodded toward the weapon already summoned in the other man's hand.

Dylon shook the man's hand, smiling ear to ear. The dude seemed on edge, but for all Dylon knew, that could be normal. He didn't know this man, after all. "Pleasure." He released his hand and stepped back a couple steps. "Let's go!" Vahn growled with adrenaline in his mind, aching and yearning for a fight.

Jordan's eyes flickered to the trim on Dylon's coat; usually he preferred to spar trainees with runic daggers, but it'd border on insulting if he desummoned now, and the guy didn't seem at all intimidated by the prospect of facing Ferros down. They'd just have to be careful. Ferros growled, a gleeful, low, grating sound. He swung almost lazily, barely clipping Dylon, holding back their strength. HP: 60/60 Dmg: 1 Charge: 1/3

The way Dylon had seen Jordan take down the dummy, he'd been prepared to get his a** handed to him. Experience was experience, good or bad. The hammer was great and terrifying. Yet, so far, the other man's drive was lacklustre at best. He really hoped the guy wasn't taking it too easy on him. "I'm not made of glass, you know." Dylon chuckled, taking a swing at the Sun. "Whoops, you caught me," Jordan replied, assessing Dylon with a thoughtful eye; the comment irritated him and made him feel better all at once. There'd be an element of challenge in holding back without looking like he was holding back. It was hardly fair to go all out on a new guy, whether or not he was taking his frustrations out. Still, he'd offered a fight and been taken up on the offer. His second swing was less casual. He stepped in and brought Ferros around in a long arc, aiming to catch Dylon's side under the arm raised to wield his bladed, faintly clawlike weapon. "Hit me," he challenged, almost cheerful. Dylon flinched of course. That was one big hammer, and when it clipped him, his whole body felt it. Trying not to let it show too much, he gave a laugh anyway. "Trying!" He chuckled, swinging a few times at Jordan's torso. He did better this time, his depth perception more on point than it had been. Quick successive strikes reached their target. Dylon closed the distance and got in a few swift, slicing jabs that made Jordan's breath hiss out between his teeth. "Better," Jordan said, approvingly, and took a swift step back. He shifted his grip on Ferros's handle and pulled the hammer's head back in close to his body, then shoved outward hard to knock Dylon away from him, twisting as he moved to bring the spikes on the barrel raking across and using Ferros's longer reach to get a little more distance between them. Going up against the full hunters was always painful. But pain was a great sign of gaining strength. Jordan's fluid and deliberate attacks taught Dylon something new with each step. Being a Moon, he felt he needed to get more experience with the different sort of attacks of others. However, he was still not as quick or well trained despite observations. His bond with Vahn was still new and shaky, even after a year on the island. Reaction times were off. Judgement subpar. The young man did his best, taking jabs and swings at his opponent to the best of his ability. HP: 24/40 Damage: 3 Charge: 2/3

Quick, grazing jabs, shallow and small, but still damage. Experience for the newer pair, the taste of Fear for the weapon; they could feel the blades drawing off their shield, a bit at a time. Observing and analyzing Dylon's attacks calmed and focused them, bleeding off the frustration of Jordan's personal problems and replacing it with a calm, alert stillness. "Get in close," he instructed. "Get inside my attack range; that'll force me to adjust or get back and give you time to get another punch in. But stay alert," and with the words he brought Ferros up and sideways to take a wide, two-handed grip on the hammer's haft, shoving the handle hard against Dylon's ribs, then using the space that gave him to pull sideways and down, catching the hammer's head against Dylon's side and leg in an attempt to sweep him off his feet. "How's your relationship with your weapon?" he asked, curious and conversational. HP: 51 Dmg: 6 Charge: 3/3

Dylon took the advice along with the pain like a terrible combo discount. He fell back hard, nearly whacking his head against the floor. Right. Alert. Stay alert. Good advice. The young man shook off the shudder from his body reacting to the attack and attempted to jump back to his feet. "It's uuh... It's good!" Dylon chimed. Vahn growled. "He's a bit of a hard a**, but he's got a lot of... passion?" < >
"Yeaaah. Lot's of passion! I'm not what you'd call a fighter by nature, but Vahn is all about chomping off heads."
Dylon swooped under the handle of the hammer to get in closer, slashing across Jordan's chest. Soon after he shimmied with quick slides until he was behind the other man to keep out of reach of the hammer.

"Good, having a good balance with your weapon's a good thing." Jordan twisted in an attempt to avoid the blades, but Dylon was fast; Jordan nodded approvingly. As the other man darted behind him, Jordan took a long step forward, then planted his foot and spun, bringing Ferros around in a powerful circle. Their mutual satisfaction at a good swing resonated along the bond. HP: 45 Dmg: 11 Charge: 3/3

The blow sent him back a few feet, toppling to the ground and knocking all the air from his lungs. Coughing, he eased himself up. A blue glow radiated from his katars and a full charge sat at the ready from Vahn. "I need to learn to dodge." He mumbled with a small laugh. The glow enveloped Dylon's body, rejuvenating the taken shield from Jordan's recent blow. HP: 7 + 12 = 19 Healing Self For: 12 Charge: 3/3 Using The Chill

Jordan paused, Ferros still held at the ready but not moving immediately to attack as Dylon picked himself up. That had probably been a healing charge, judging by the way it had wrapped back around Dylon instead of lashing outward. "Doing all right?" he asked. "How's your shield?"
