Samhain skirted the border of the lake, peering at the waters with interest. He'd followed the winding stream down from the mountains, to where it pooled in the large basin amidst the valley. A second river, fed by the lake, made its way further towards the salty ocean. He'd never visited the ocean himself, but he'd heard that it was rather... large... and for now he was content to admire the already-seemingly-enormous lake. The ocean and all its vastness could wait a little while.
It was a clear, sunny blue day, and he had eaten his fill of fresh grass on his way down to the lake. He was quite content, rather complacent really.
Smiling slightly to himself, he peeked closer to the water, trying to see beneath the slightly murky shorewaters. It seemed to clear up further towards the middle of the lake, but it was rather cloudy close to the shore. Wondering vaguely why that was, his ears flickered to and fro in their constant alert dance. He knew that predators needed water, too, and he was not going to be here when one got thirsty!

Yukine had swam from the ocean into this lake as he in behind the surface far enough that he is hidden well. Though the plants growing in the lake also keep him very well hidden. Seeing a shadow above walking towards the edge of the lake. Yukine thinks that this would be fun if he pops up. Waiting until the shadow takes a drink Yukine moves so that his nose touches that of the land Soquili. While the land one stepped back. Yukine slowly broke the water's surface and his head comes out of the water as he giggles.
"Oh I am sorry. I didn't mean to give you a heart attack. Just a little scare. After all someones one can forget the feeling of being alive until they get scared." Mers are huge. placing his legs on the enough of the lake and pushes himself up outta the water. As he rolls onto the shallow waters to show the other his fins and size then rolls himself back into the deeper water. After all being outta the water is annoying for one and can be deadly to him for another. "I am what you land Soquili call a Mer. Eight feet long I am from head to tail fin." He smiles as he is very sweet although he is disorderly and disruptive as well as not amenable to discipline or control in temperament. His temperament is more of his way to remain free.
Because being free is the best way to be happy. Or so this mer believes. Playing pranks from time to time is also fun and being free adds more fun to life. He can't believe that someone tied down could ever be happy or know what real fun is all about. Watching the stallion he just scared. "I am truly sorry if I scared you too much. I don't eat Soquili even if I was big enough to do so. I will stick to seaweed and the likes of it. Eating any animal sounds gross to me. Be it land or sea." He points out as he is glad the the lake is shaded by some tall trees because he hates to be in direct sunlight. Seeing the sun can dry out his skin and makes him feel all gross until he goes deep into the dark ocean and stays there for a few hours. That is the only way to get back to feeling normal that he has found.
"Oh I was so rude. I am called Yukine. What might your name be?" He wonders as he watches this land soquili as he wonders what it would be like to live on the land and not the sea. But that thought made him miss the ocean and sea that he enjoys swimming in most days.

The only reason he wasn't gone was that he had been frozen in fear as the great head rose from the depths. His heart still beating frantically, his breathing shallow, he thought- So this is it. He'd spent so long in fear of attacked from above or around that he'd failed to consider below... and, now, he'd dropped his guard to get a drink, and oh I don't want to be a snack! It had all happened so fast, he barely remembered stepping back (not that he ever did; pure fear, survival instinct, no thought involved), his nose still cold from the other's slippery-scaled skin.
His jaw slackened slightly as the monster spoke. Sorry?!
He kept staring, dumbfounded, his confused limbs twitching slightly as he stood frozen in that fear-struck position, one foreleg raised and his hind legs already coiled beneath him. Listening, he began to relax as the 'Mer' described his diet. He'd come to accept that, when an apology and a description of Who I Am was paired with a description of diet, they generally tended to be telling the tru- AHHOH MY STARS THAT THING IS MASSIVE- the reality of the other's size finally kicked in, after his brain processed all the words, and he stared at the other from his position a few feet further than he'd originally backed up to. But, the Mer had retreated back into the water, hiding his bulk in the murky depths (Samhain glowered at the water, wishing it was all clear as air for all the environmental harm that would do to the shy critters below), agreeing internally that eating animals sounded gross and yet still puzzling over how in Kawani being scared was good.
Oh, he knew that it was good to have a healthy fright of the unknown, it kept one alive and all that, keep ones instincts honed yadda yadda... but he felt alive enough when he was just calm and relaxed and enjoying a Nice day, he didn't need this... this Mer to come over and scare him for... for... fun?
He stopped, staring dumbly before recovering enough of his wits to respond. "I am Samhain, and I would thank you if you could please let me decide how I wish to feel alive... Yukine." It most definitely was not a pleasure, though at least he knew enough to be cautious about something called a Mer popping out from the water.

Yukine watching the stallion. "Just so you know it is rare for Mers to come into deep lakes like these. So you might not run into many of my mine. We normally stay in the depths of the ocean seas. But because of our size there isn't a lot of dangers that will mess with us. And yea I will let you decide that from now on Samhain." He points out as he swims backwards to the center of the lake and then back to where he was. Land Soquili were always so interesting to him. Although his twin brother would yell at him if he knew that he was visiting the surface like this.
After all the surface had those things called skinwalkers or pure ones. He wonders just what they are. But that could wait for another time.

Samhain listened seriously to the other's explanation, trusting him implicitly due to the illogical... fright... of the idea that many somethings as large as he could lurk in a single lake. Surely, word would have gotten out if there were many taking up residence in fresh-water!
"Ah, I see, thank you." He stated, pitching his voice slightly to make sure the other- Yukine- heard his response, as he swam to and fro.
Unable to contain his curiosity, now that he knew that the other was just... messing around... he smiled a little. "And, thank you. Are there... those in the sea, who so scare you that you might feel invigorated?" He wondered if this hobby was reciprocated, or just the creation of a rather playful mind. "Personally, I prefer a good meal and a nice trot on a sunny day with just enough wind to cool without chilling." Trotting felt like a privilege to him, when he so often spooked and started and took off at a break-neck gallop when more threatening individuals approached. A simple trot... ahhhh, that was the life.
He blanched a little, feeling rather rude. Aquatics... they didn't have legs, they couldn't trot! Had he been insensitive? "... or... swim?" he began to babble a little, worried that he had offended the giant... friendly, he reminded himself quickly... waterbeast. "Does it get quite cold, in the ocean? I don't suppose i'd enjoy it very much, it seems so... so huge." He looked out at the lake, then his eyes widened as he considered the underwater population and how many could fit in something so vast. "But, then, I wasn't built for... water."

Thinking on Samhain's question. "Sharks might try but there isn't enough that is big enough to too a mer on. So no not really." Laughing as he listens to Samhain as he wonders on how to word his answers. "I am not sure I can trot but I am one fine swimmer. And damn fast as well. As to the ocean being cold. Yea it is. The deeper you go the colder it is even on the warmest of days on the surface. And Huge is an understatement. The Ocean is not only wide but deep. And no worries I am not built for land. So not being built for something doesn't mean you can't have fun with water or land from time to time." He thinks back and makes sure that he answered all that was asked as he lifts his tail fin up and outta the water and then brings it down fast to splash water up and on his own head.

Shark? He had utterly no desire to ever meet a shark. He was quite glad he'd met Yukine, instead of one of those!
Samhain flushed a little as the water-dweller proclaimed that he probably couldn't trot- well, no, the rhythm itself would not be suited to three appendages, though his tail would surely make him an excellent swimmer. He hoped he hadn't been unthinkingly rude, in mentioning his own favorite pastimes- but, then, Yukine had seemed to have taken no offense. He let out a little sigh of relief.
"Oh, i'm sure!" he could only imagine the other's sleek form racing through the water. Huger than huge? "Ah, bigger even than land?" His eyes widened in wonder. He didn't much like the cold, and something so vast surely contained a huuuuuuuge... er... many sharks.... nope, not interested. Don't want it. Interested, that is, just not in going there. "Ah." Samhain jerked backwards a little as Yukine suddenly splashed water over himself, then frowned thoughtfully when he realized the movement hadn't been meant to startle or surprise. "If you don't mind my asking, do you get cold? And... how do you enjoy both sea and land?"
To be so skilled at swimming, and yet be able to lounge upon land as well- Samhain was quite happy with his own body, thank you, but he did find it quite... intriguing... that one could be seemingly between two parallel worlds. Able to enjoy perhaps not the best but at least good things of both worlds. Like... friends. "Do you have many friends, beneath the surface and above?" He supposed the best explanation for splitting time would be to make sure to spend time with everyone!

"Well I don't really get cold. There is colder parts of the ocean but is it ok if you get use to the cold slowly and also keep moving." He pointed out as he listens to Samhain as he smiles. "I love looking at the land but I can't live outside of water. So I can only call the water my home. Under the seas and oceans. Living on the land is only but a dream for me. But it is nice to make friends both under the sea and those that live on the land." Stating this as he thinks. just how many friends did he have above and below the water. Pondering on it as he looks at Samhain once again. "I have more family in the sea then friends in general." He has a brother. He hasn't really had any friends as of right now.
Sighing as that made him a bit sad. "I don't have anyone outside of my brother really. I would like to have a lot of friends but the ones on land normally run away. You are the first that has stayed and chatted with me. Thank you." His voice soft just then on the thank you as he sinks into the water more to cover himself because he will die without water so he can't allow any part of him to dry out for too long. "So I would be honored if you were my first friend. It would mean a lot to me." smiling as he pushes that sad thought of only having his brother and no one else to the side. He loved his brother but he wanted friends both on land and in the seas.
Maybe it was wishful thinking but he wanted it. Maybe it was something that can't happen but damn it. He was going to try and not give in without at least trying. Who cares where one is from bonds and friendships can form no matter what is something the he strongly believes in and nothing will change that way of thinking. Even if some in the sea tell him that land creatures are not things that will befriend the sea creatures. He knows that deep down in his heart that it isn't true. He knows that the land and sea creatures are all the same in having feelings and hearts. He knows it. As he smiles towards Samhain waiting to hear if he will be his friend or not while he rolls in the water to let it soak over his whole body so that he is in no danger of drying out. Swaying his tail up and down a bit under the surface of the water so not to splash Samhain again enjoying this.
