Age: 23
Staring into that vial of black goo was like facing a shark dead on... terrifying. Maya was given a deadly responsibility, one that could cost her mankind's survival if she failed. "Tch... Idiots," she muttered, letting the vial fall, the small chain around her neck holding it up. She plopped herself down on the roof of the small convenience store, her legs hanging off the edge as she watched the sun rise. Rotters stumbled here and there, taking no notice of her. "It just had to be me, didn't it? Just had to." She was both annoyed and perplexed by her situation. She was a cheater, a thief, not a hero. But for some reason, fate had its own idea of what it wanted her to be.
Maya was a bartender before it had started, worked the bar five years (the manager didn't particularly care about how underage she was when she started) in a spit-in-a-can and get-into-fights type of setting while getting men drunk enough for her to discreetly take a little extra dough to keep on the side, not like her boss really cared. One morning, a man had stumbled in and Maya had presumed he was drunk. It was normal for someone to go get drinks while already intoxicated. Still, there was something off about him. He moaned incoherently and his skin seemed almost grey. He tackled a customer, which caused everyone to gather around and scream "FIGHT!" But their encouragements soon turned to shouts of terror when he bit into the patron's neck, tearing off more than just flesh. Everyone went crazy, and somehow, 4 months later, she ended up in Oklahoma with that thing around her neck.
She had found some scientist who had been bitten. Even though it was his dying wish, she initially rejected his request. It's when she had to kill him after he turned that she decided if she finished the job, she wouldn't have to deal with the undead anymore. A selfish reason, but that was Maya.

Jeez, what a great day. Makes everything seem like this was how it's been since anything began. You turn the corner, oh wait, another one. Make the next turn, another slobbering a*****e. You can't escape them here. They are just what god intended, aren't they?
Lecksy, being a 20-year-old with that 'oh it'll all work out in the end' attitude, couldn't seem to find the 'better' to this. Everywhere she looked there was a gross, disgusting creature waiting for her, longing for the taste of hers, and every other living things flesh. Great way to live right?
You would think your 20th birthday would be full of cheers and everyone saying 'one year left til I take you to your first casino!' Well. not every birthday is the same. On Lecksys birthday, you know what her big gift was? A nive big tear in the leg of her father. A huge gash in the neck of her mother. What a great birthday. Only the best of them all get this kind of surprise.
Lecksy wandered the now empty streets of a small town in Oklahoma where she was in search of her older brother and her uncle. It seems they would still be alive since they lived together in a blocked off cabin with an arsenal the size of Texas. They seemed to have expected something like this to happen. If she had, she wouldn't even been in a completely different state. She would have prepared at her home where her mom and dad would still be alive.
"Jesus christmas... This whole town is practically gone... Looks like someone had a huge party and everyone took acid..." She muttered lightly, checking everywhere to make sure nothing would just jump at her and take her life before she could herself. I mean who wouldn't love to live in Oklahoma right now.
Lecksy had continued to pass empty stores, homes and a couple of bars where she could've sworn she heard others talking, but at this rate you can never be too careful. Get to excited about meeting actual people and you get your fingers bit off. Maybe even a hand... Her heart raced, afraid that even a little bit of noise or disruption would make those evil things come out and get her. Only way to keep that from happening? Who knows. Just be quiet is all she can thing of.

Maya Cecily
Maya hadn't seen a human in almost a full month. The one guy she spotted before that long period of no company had been eaten while going out to get them food (so much for partners). You could imagine the surprise when Maya's dark blue eyes caught sight of a female walking along the streets. She wasn't stumbling or moaning... it was clear she was human. What the hell was she doing out in the open?! "You idiot," Maya whispered quietly, standing up.
"Pst!" Maya waved her hands, hoping to get the girl's attention. She checked below her to make sure no rotters were surrounding the large, grey dumpster. None. Covering her nose, Maya jumped in, landing softly, but noisily, on the large black trash bags. "Hey!" She called again in a whisper, jumping out. She pulled her crowbar out of her make-shift weapon belt and held tightly to it in case of any unpleasant encounters and waved her hands again. Why was she doing putting herself in danger for the sake of one stupid girl? Maya didn't know herself. Maybe she was just desperate for the company of someone who was living. Loneliness will be the death of me, she thought to herself in a loathing manner.

"You're a damn idiot," was the first thing that came out of Maya's mouth. Still, she was happy to see someone nice, and she uttered a small "thanks" right after as she straightened her overalls. "What the hell are you thinking? Out in the open like that... one of those rotters could just sneak up behind you and snatch you!" It's not like she was worried about her, not too worried. Maybe she was, or she wouldn't be scolding her like she was her mother. She dusted a piece of trash off of her black jacket, looking here and there suspiciously to make sure they were alone.
The girl looked older than Maya, but then most people around her age did. Though an adult, Maya had the body and face of a small teen, and combined with her blunt and sometimes sour attitude, she could easily pass off as a spoiled young brat.
