Mimisbrunnr had decided, after a lot of dithering, that it was finally time for her to go to space. Or, well, to her portion of space - to her Wonder. She didn't want to do it alone, though. To be honest, she was a little nervous about the thought of it - sure, Babylon had been lovely and warm and welcoming, but the coldness of Mistral's halls still frightened her. The image of the poor dead Cosmos Knights was burned into her retinas.

So she decided she wouldn't go by herself. Normally, Marie would've been her first choice, bu taking her civilian girlfriend on an odyssey across the universe seemed like a bad idea. So instead, she'd considered her powered acquaintances - and, well, it sort of seemed appropriate to bring the other Knight she knew whose Wonder was one of the wells under Yggdrasil, at least in mythology.

So she went to find Hvergelmir, going on stories of the Squire hanging out in North End Park and waiting for people. She felt a Squire aura and approached, feeling a little nervous.

"Hvergelmir?" She called, pulling down her facemask. Hver was a friend - there was no need to use the thing around her.

Hvergelmir smiled at the feeling of a friendly aura -- another knight -- approaching. She'd been working on her thread spinning, as she usually did these days, and while it kept her hands busy, it didn't really leave her mind much to do.

Friendly conversation was the best balm for that: and while an Order aura didn't necessarily guarantee that the chat was going to be an agreeable one, it rarely ended in danger or harm for her. This was particularly true of other knights, who in her experience seemed to take to her oath a little more comfortably than some others. Perhaps the formal nature of it was just naturally more familiar to them than to senshi . . . or perhaps Hvergelmir had simply had a run of luck of familiar knights. Or, as a third possibility, perhaps their shared tragedy at Mistral had just drawn a group of them together.

Except Bifrost, she thought, pondering and worrying a little. Hvergelmir wondered to herself whether or not the woman would respond if a Cosmos knight she barely knew sent her a note. She'd have to give it a try, at least, sometime. The worst that could happen would be that she'd just get no response.

Today, though Hvergelmir was met with a friendly face -- a page of Mercury she was quite fond of. "Mimisbrunnr," she greeted the other woman affably. "What brings you out here?"

Mimisbrunnr felt some of her anxiety melt away, just hearing Hvergelmir's welcoming, cheery greeting. At least the Squire was happy to see her, that was a step in the right direction. Maybe that would change when she made her request, though...

"Uhm, actually, I wanted to ask you something - see, I haven't...been to my Wonder, yet." She admitted. "Or gotten my signet ring, or anything like that, and all of that is kind of inconvenient?" It meant she was cut off from magical communication, and that she didn't even know what her little slice of Mercury looked like.

God, this was harder than she thought it would be, because she kept thinking of the last place she'd gone on Mercury with Hver - and she felt guilty, almost, asking the Cosmos Squire to go somewhere that was totally unknown to both of them. Somewhere that could be just as dangerous as Mistral, or even worse.

"So, uhm, I was wondering if you'd come with me because I don't want to go alone." There, she'd said it, that was that.

Ah. That was -- that was pretty understandable. Hvergelmir had first gone to her wonder when she'd still been innocent of how dangerous they could be. Her first trip to space had been Aquarius Outpost, which was damaged but perfectly calm and safe. Her own wonder had held no fear for her -- and had proven peaceful and harmless.

Mimisbrunnr's first experiences of space would've been things like Olympus and Mistral, though. One pulled you across the solar system without warning, and the other -- the other had been Mistral. They didn't inspire feelings of safety.

"That's okay -- we'll go together. You can take my hand, and then it's just, repeat after me: I pledge my life and loyalty to -- Mercury, I guess, and to Mimisbrunnr? I humbly request your aid, so that in return I may give you mine. Then just try and clear your mind and focus in on the energy of your wonder when you can feel it.

"How about it -- do you want to give it a try right now?" She held out her hand.

There was no time like the present, especially with things you were afraid of. Hvergelmir knew that much; she spent lots of her time putting off things she was afraid of.

Hvergelmir's easy acceptance of her request made Mimisbrunnr smile and relax. Clearly there had been nothing to worry about, and of course Hver would be happy to come with her. It made her fele much better to reach out and take the other Knight's hand, and to wonder, for a moment, what Mimisbrunnr the Wonder would be like.

She did not close her eyes, because she wanted to see whatever there was to see.

"Alright, let's do this," she said, and then she took a breath. "I pledge my life and loyalty to Mercury, and to Mimisbrunnr." She intoned, just as Hver had. "I humbly request your aid, so that in return I may give you mine."

And somewhere in the back of her mind was a feeling of cold (but not uncomfortable cold - the light, cheery n** of autumn air, almost) and a rush of water, and suddenly they were no longer in the park.

No, instead they were somewhere else - inside a building, the floor a mosaic of blues and whites, with what looked like shelves curving all around them. And in the dead center of the room, not far from where she stood, was a well - a well of water that seemed too blue, and for a moment she thought it glowed like her weapon - but no, it did not.

"Took you long enough to get here," a voice said from somewhere behind her, and Mimisbrunnr jumped.

"Oh my god Hver did you hear that please tell me you heard that," she said, nervously, unwilling to turn around.

Hvergelmir was staring wide-eyed at the space over Mimisbrunnr's shoulder. This was probably not even a little reassuring.

"I heard it," she said slowly, like a person in a horror movie.

She heard it -- but unfortunately could not see anything that would explain the origins of the voice. Memories of Mistral made her toes curl in fear and with the phantom sensation of blood squelching underfoot. She'd been looking around, eyes drinking in the beautiful, cool blue-and-white cavern of Mistral's wonder, when the voice had startled them both.

She squeezed Mimisbrunnr's hands, not willing yet to let go.

"There's nothing there," she said ominously, voice quaking.

Mimisbrunnr chanced a slow look around, still hanging onto Hver for dear life. At least she hadn't hallucinated the voice, but there was no source to it, and that was...well, that was worse.

"Who's there?" She called, and she knew she sounded like a horror movie cliche, because her voice definitely quaked a little. Oh god, oh god, was her Wonder haunted? Were there murderous ghosts or something?

"Goodness, you'd think you girls had never seen a ghost before," the voice said, except this time it had moved - to over by the well - and there was a source. A dark-skinned woman, in an outfit much like Mimisbrunnr's, but somehow more regal and elegant, with a long fur cape. Her hair was unbound, and deep blue, and her facemask was down and her visor seemed to be missing.

Mimis let out a tiny squeak, eyes wide, and moved closer to Hver. The ghost stared up at the ceiling for a long moment, pressing her palm to her forehead.

"Calm down, I'm here to help you, I promise." She said, and then she surveyed the two of them. "So!" She pointed to Mimisbrunnr. "You must be my descendant, the new Page here. And you..." She tapped her foot, pointing at Hver. "You are very clearly a Squire of Cosmos. What's your name?"

The appearance of the ghost -- particularly since it had moved -- did not immediately make Hvergelmir feel any better. It took a while for her to convince herself to listen to what the apparition was saying.

She wanted to help them. She was a friendly ghost.

Okay. Yes. Okay. Babylon had had an ancestor! He had been a friendly ghost! She could totally go with this.

She took a few deep breaths, totally going with this.

(But still holding onto one of Mimisbrunnr's hands.)

"I'm the squire of Hvergelmir, and bear its name," she introduced herself, dipping into a curtsy (but, nevertheless, still holding Mimisbrunnr's hand). This seemed like basically a polite thing to do. "I have the honor of serving that great Wonder."

Okay, so far nothing was rattling off shelves or flying throguh the air, and she had never heard of a proper haunting-and-chin-rattling ghost that talked beyond a few moaned sentences.

Also, Hvergelmir was talking to her which meant the ghost was definitaly actually there and Mimisbrunnr was not hallucinating. That was also comforting.

While the Page got her bearings (and continued to hang onto Hver for dear life) her ancestral ghost lit up and clapped her hands.

"Well, Hvergelmir, welcome to my - our, I suppose, since my successor is here, now - little library. It's always an honor to host one of Cosmos's own - and another one of the Wells!" She sounded positively delighted. "I am Aishe Džóší , previously Mimisbrunnr Knight - but obviously this is no longer my Wonder." She walked over, and bopped her successor on the nose. Mimis squeaked loudly, and then swallowed. The surname - Džóší, astrologer - was familiar, from when she had once tried to trace her family tree.

"So," the Page said, "you're a...mule? My ancestral ghost?" She asked. That was...kinda cool, and not actually all that scary. The mule were usually benevolent. Unless you screwed up. Mimis did not think she had screwed up that badly. Yet.

She slowly let go of Hver's hands. "So, you can...tell me where my signet ring is?" She asked.

"I can," Aishe said, "and I'd be happy to give it to you - if I could get to it. See, this place hasn't had power for a thousand years - but maybe if you could fix it, it might be a little easier to get to the ring."

Babylon had had a ghost ancestor, Mimisbrunnr had a ghost ancestor, lots of people had ghost ancestors -- Hvergelmir would have given her left kidney for a ghost ancestor. It seemed like such an advantage . . . compared to the alternative, which was apparently to occasionally recall occasional two-second reels of oneself doing laundry in a past lifetime. Joy. Terribly helpful.

So, while Mimisbrunnr's ancestral ghost had, at first, seemed terrifically spooky, Hvergelmir was immediately now willing to view her as a helpful asset and react accordingly. She had no problem assisting the other knight with turning the power back on, if she could -- though something else Aishe had said had already thrown her off.

"Excuse me, but -- did you say this place is a library?"

Hvergelmir looked around again. She supposed space libraries could be made up of anything, but -- all the same, it was odd to be standing in a library with no actual books to be seen.

Aishe raised her eyebrows. "Things have fallen far if no one knows of the great library of Mimisbrunnr," she said, and then she gestured to what looked like large, gray filing cabinets. "Every one of those compartments holds a text - some of them ancient, and priceless, and some of them...well. You know. Not every invention is brilliant, but things need to be archived somewhere." She shrugged, and then beckoned. "Follow me, and I'll take you to the power generators."

"So, uh," Mimis said, already starting to walk after her ancestor, "what are we going to have to do? Is this like, a magic...thing? Because I can't do magic but I think Hver can," and if it required magic she really hoped it was the sort Hver could provide.

"Some wires to reconnect, and a little spark, maybe," Aishe said, "I think. I've never had to put it back together before."

The Great Libary of Mimisbrunnr . . . Well, that didn't sound so bad.

Then again, Mistral was just a laboratory. And Hvergelmir's group had only been on the Archival floor.

She shuddered and looked around as she followed the pair of women -- wondering what kinds of dangerous texts might be here, or why a library had been built around a well.

"I can probably provide a spark," she said, which was certainly an understatement -- then followed it with, "But, uh.... is this place... safe? Is there a security system or anything?"

Aishe shrugged as she walked, between shelves and shelves and shelves, to a door tucked in the bakc of the main room. "Security system? You're, ah, looking at it. That, and the archival computer, since you needed call-codes for the compartments the texts are in, but that's not working."

That was an incredible relief to Mimisbrunnr, because, well, she was terrified that she would have to navigate another hell of traps like Mistral. (Nothing was that important. Seriously. Just burn the place.)

"So basically, I have to put things back together, and Hver sparks it up, and...what, this palce has power again?" Mimis asked.

"That would be the plan," Aishe replied. "It...should work. I think?"

'I think.'

Hmm. Well, that was certainly more than a little intriguing.

"Excuse the question," Hvergelmir led off, "and I hope it doesn't sound impertinent, but -- how complete is your memory? Do you remember things like how you died? What happened to this place? What happened to Mercury, or to the galaxy at large? Right now it's... mostly dead, except for Earth. And we're struggling to understand how an entire thriving galaxy could suddenly die out, all its life, nearly all at once."

She hemmed and hawwed a little, self-conscious. "I mean, we'll definitely help, so point us in the right direction to get the power going again, just -- it's vitally important information. If there's any chance you can remember even a little...?"

Hvergelmir did not have a ghost ancestor. That didn't mean she was unwilling to milk other people's ghost ancestors for as much information as she could.

Aishe paused with her ghostly hand resting on the door, and frowned. She seemed to think for a minute, and then she looked back at Hvergelmir with an expression that was undeniably sad.

"Full of holes, is how my memory is. I used to know so much more - but things are missing, particularly things about the end of Mercury and...of the rest of the galaxy. Devel, the whole galaxy," the ghostly Knight shook her head, and gestured for Mimis to get the door.

As soon as they were inside, Mimisbrunnr squealed like a delighted child, momentarily forgetting that her ancestor was missing parts of her memory and that they were vital to the war - because she was in her element. "This is a server room!" She said, spinning around. The comparison was clear - against the walls were towers of what definitely did look like computer servers, though in the center was a large towering device, and Mimis could see cables all over the place.

"Hver, help me with these cords," the Page said, "I think I can see where they connect in to the central hub..."
