I'm attempting to transition to a vegan lifestyle. I may be able to become a minimal vegetarian, omitting cow, chicken, pig, and other animals' products, but some things may take a bit more time... like goat cheese and salmon. Anywho, I purchased some vegan doughnuts from a Rastafarian friend of mine tonight, but I found them to be a bit dry this time... I decided to make a glaze to dip them in. I like it, so I'm sharing it, and any other vegan/vegetarian recipes I concoct.

Vegan Vanilla Doughtnut Glaze
Derived from www.veganbaking.net

It was late, I was munchy, and I didn't have all the ingredients, so I winged it.

  • 2 tablespoons agave nectar
  • 1/8 cup refined coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons almond milk
  • 2 teaspoons (or just a spill) vanilla extract
  • 1 dash salt

Whisk it all together, and now you have glaze! If you have a food processor, that'll work even better!

I replaced powdered sugar for nectar, therefore I shouldn't have needed as much coconut oil. The oil, I believe gives it all of its mobile qualities like its viscosity & melting temperature, its clear glazy look, all sorts of stuff. The powdered sugar gave it its sweetness and color. So my glaze is not as white as it would have been, but I believe it's sweeter. 3nodding

Oh, nice! That sounds good!

I was raised mostly by my dad and grandma who were vegetarian. They were Hindu so it was against their religion. We did eat by-products.. stuff made with milk.

I finally noticed I always get sick when I eat beef. I think because my body had no meat growing up my body can't handle it. I always preferred not to eat meat at all. My only weaknesses were steak and bacon. Bacon was the second meat I ever ate, the first I ever remembered. Apparently as a toddler my babysitter gave me a hotdog. My dad flipped out when he found out. But bacon.. I was the one mad about that. The first day my mom got me back she fed it to me. I thought it was so delicious. I kept prying her to find out what it was. Finally she told me it came from a pig. I remember screaming at her and slamming my bedroom door over and over. xD

I go on and off on kicks of not eating any meat at all. Right now I'm on again. I do still eat eggs but I keep saying I'm going to try a substitute. One problem I do have though is when Pete's mom cooks with meat. I feel bad to say no. She has stopped cooking with beef. Now it's turkey. Strangely chicken and turkey don't make me sick, but I'd still prefer to not eat them.

One thing that gets me is, no matter if I stop eating meat the poor animals are still going to be bred to die. I wish everyone in the world would just stop wanting meat, but that would never happen. I do see a huge difference between hunting an animal and having an animal grow up in a cage just to be eaten.

I only buy cage free chicken eggs and cage free, grass fed cow milk. I don't see why these animals need to be treated the way they are just for us to get eggs and milk.

I look forward to seeing your recipes. 3nodding I have an omnivorous type diet myself, but I would love to transition into eating more leafy greens and nuts over meat. I just think I could live a much healthier lifestyle doing it that way.

The process of animals
dieing for people to get meat always
makes me feel sick,
but it turns out, I can't ever be vegan neutral

My body is killing off
protein non stop, so I need to
consume it or I won't be able to function.

I've actually tried to
replace meat with peanut butter gonk
I felt like....the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz.
Couldn't move at all.

emo I got traumatized as a little kid.
There was a documentary.
About slaughter houses that my dad made me watch.
WHILE EATING A BURGER scream

crying There was one part that
made me throw up instantly...
A chimp was strapped into the middle of
a table with a hole in it.

His little head was poking out.
A family of four sat around and they
had tiny hammers.
crying They hit the monkey on the head
until they could get to his brain.

To this day, I still don't understand
why this movie existed emo
Every animal shown deserved to live.

Oh man, I have seen the monkey brain thing. crying I saw it on one of those "Faces of Death" documentaries. May be what you're talking about. I have actually seen all of them for some screwed up reason I haven't figured out.

I've also seen way too many PETA videos. Some of the workers are just downright cruel. There was one of a KFC chicken farm where they kicked chickens around and laughed about it. crying

I can understand your need for protein. Peanut butter is really the only substitute I know of. Guess a google search is around the corner.. I need to watch that, could be yet another factor to why I feel weak all the time.

Non Meat Proteins found on vrg.org: (With grams of protein)
Listed the highest sources.

2 Tbsp Peanut Butter ( 8 )
2 Tbsp Almonds ( 4 )
1 cup Vegetarian Baked Beans ( 12 )
5 oz firm Tofu ( 12 )
1 medium Bagel ( 10 )
1 cup cooked Lentils ( 18 )
2 slices Whole Wheat Toast ( 7 )
1 cup cooked soybeans ( 29 )
1 cup cooked beans, these varieties: ( 15 )
Black, Kidney, Chickpeas, Pinto, Lima
1 veggie burger ( 13 )

There are multiple types of proteins, apparently. I did not know that. On VRG they say, "We recommend eating a variety of unrefined grains, legumes, seeds, nuts, and vegetables throughout the day, so that if one food is low in a particular essential amino acid, another food will make up this deficit."

Life is hard for a vegetarian.. especially a vegan.

I admire all who can be a vegetarian, even moreso a vegan. My sister-in-law was a vegetarian but I think she changed after having my nephew. I don't think she was getting enough iron in her system.
A guy I used to be friends actually stopped being a vegetarian when he had haggis. HAGGIS. The only thing that WOULD make me a vegetarian. gonk

xd
That's such an odd
thing to switch for!!
But I guess if it's cooked
nicely and there isnt anything bad
associated with it, haggis can be good xd

Like for example,
I think if mentioned this before but,
my mom had a caramel candy once in her life
when she was little.

She bit in and an
ant sack exploded sweatdrop
She wont eat them again.

I guess if the haggis had
tasted terrible, it wouldnt
have been a positive experience.

Ewww. When I was in Scotland they kept saying I needed to try Haggis. Thankfully they kept forgetting about it and I never tried it, haha. But in Scotland they eat so much beef. It's awful. I was sick almost the whole time I was there, and I think it was all the beef. I don't know how people freaking survive in the UK with all the nasty crap they eat. Like Black Pudding. That is so disgusting.

If I'm lacking in anything I wouldn't know it. I take a few vitamins but I don't take any Iron. I just looked up the symptoms of Iron deficiency and I have all the symptoms besides craving non food items (like dirt, lol). Looks like I need to add another pill to my list.

Oh my God, your poor mother! I would've freaked out for the rest of my life if I bit into that. D:

I've gotten ill eating certain things just randomly, which is why I no longer eat Cheetos. I got sick after eating them one time and I refuse to eat them again.

Other countries think Americans eat badly, well...they have another thing coming when they look at other countries!

I have Vitamin D deficiency, so I've been having to take a lot of pills in the past two years. I have to get bloodworm done to see if I still need to take them eventually.

Ah, maybe you should try drinking lots of organic milk. I don't know why but organic just tastes so much better. I've only been told of one deficiency, potassium. I used to take pills for it, but now I'm addicted to coconut water so I stopped taking the pills. One of the small bottles of Vita Coco has 26% of your daily needed potassium. Sometimes I get the big ones, and even though I tell myself I will save half for later I end up drinking it all most of the time. xD Coconut water has more potassium than bananas.

I plan on telling my fiancé's mom about the Vita Coco drink. She eats bananas everyday, maybe having a drink instead could be easier.

My mom would buy organic milk for us all the time when I still lived at home but this house buys skim milk...I hate it. I grew up on 2% so it's a different taste to me.

Ew, skim milk. I hate it too. I grew up on 2% too. I didn't think I liked milk that much until I tried whole milk. It like blew me away, haha. It tastes so much better. The Vita Coco is kinda pricey. Like just one singular one of the small bottles is $1.99 here. But of course the bigger one you get the cheaper you pay per ounce or what have you. It tastes so freaking good though that it's a nice splurge. And it's super good for you. Coconut water is not only packed with potassium but also electrolytes. It's also fat and cholesterol free. It has a bit of magnesium and calcium. The Vita Coco brand adds just one thing to the regular coconut water, vitamin c. And it's 100% your daily needed amount.

I told her about the Vita Coco and she immediately knew it was much more expensive than purchasing bananas. At least she told me she liked coconuts so it wasn't like she was totally against the idea, haha.
