It had been a long night, Nebby hadn't slept well since he had stayed up quite late organizing and re-organizing his feathers and furs. And his cave still wasn't quite to his liking, but he'd gotten frustrated and ended up with both collections strewn about after throwing a hissy fit, so he had decided it would be good to go out for a walk, maybe find someone to bother. Perhaps he would come across some fine fillies to woo, that would make up for a bad night, he figured. He chuckled to himself and hummed a tune as he wandered along, his trinkets jingling as his large, feline-featured body went along through the grass and bushes.

It was a relatively pleasant day, at least, and that helped Nebby's mood as well. He was feeling hungry though and didn't know what might be around that could appease his gurgle-guts. He paused a moment with one hood lifted daintily and peered about, trying to spot some favourite flowers, or maybe a bird or a rabbit or something he could chew on with relative ease. He was still a bit flustered, and really didn't want to have to put too much effort into finding food. Or at least something to amuse him...

Coralia was on a mission. Not the sort of mission where she would go somewhere specific and accomplish some specific goal, but a more nebulous, open ended sort of mission. She had been told by theoretically reputable sources that she had gotten ‘entrenched in prickliness,’ and she, after much thought, had decided she didn’t like that. While it was true that she still felt no desire to be joining any herds any time soon, she didn’t want to be established as the great harridan of the mountains, either! So her self-imposed mission was simple and direct: try and be pleasant to those she met. On the surface, it was a simple mission; in truth, it was anything but!

“Yeh cain handle thehs, Cora; it’s nae tha’ hard tae be friendly, loike.” She didn’t know when she had first gotten into the habit of talking to herself, but she had come to rely on these ‘conversations’ as the ultimate pep talk when she found herself in rough situations. There were many Soquili who were gifted in the art of schmoozing and socialization; Cora herself was not one of them. It wasn’t that she specifically set out to be belligerent, but it had been her experience that strangers were not to be trusted. Why would she want to encourage them to linger if she didn’t trust them? But the same credible sources who had points out she was getting permanently prickly had reminded her that strangers can become friends, or allies, or partners, or who knew what else.

She still wasn’t sure she wanted any of those things, but since her twin brother was proving distressingly talented at meeting strangers, she really needed to try expanding her own horizons. “Yeh can do theh, yeh can be fraindly an’ loikable an’…pleasant. Yeh can.” Or so she hoped.

As he stood poised in the grass, Nebby's sensitive ears detected a slight sound of movement. He glanced about, his tail twitching as he scanned his surroundings. He was hardly able to pick her out from against the backdrop of grasses and forest, a mare that appeared to have large butterfly-like wings. He pondered for a moment whether she would have seen him or not, though he knew that spots were good acting camouflage. He hunkered down a little and watched her for a moment. He thought to himself that perhaps he could go around and sneak up behind her...

But she looked pretty, from here at least, and that would be mean. The huge, cat-like Soquili began a trot toward her, instead, deciding that a head-on approach would probably work best, if not just fine. His trinkets jingled as he moved toward her, and his muzzle twitched as he picked up her scent off the pitiful breeze.

"Well hello there..." He called to announce himself, putting on a charming grin and shaking himself so as to fluff up his mane. "Say, you aren't lost are you, deaaaar?" He added. Nebby always spoke very slowly and with a drawl. It was simply his way, and for some reason it added to his charm.

Coralia had been so deep in thought that it was just as well that the stallion announced his presence, though she believed she would have noticed his jinging long before he invaded her personal space. He was really loud, this...stallion?

The voice was definitely masculine, but Coralia had never seen a stallion quite like the one now approaching her. He had the height of a stallion, and the general build of a stallion...but what on earth sort of tail was that? It made her think more of a fox, or a mountain lion; no Soquili she's ever seen had a tail anything remotely similar to that. Plus, he was wearing more ornaments than some Kawani she'd seen. Frowning slightly, she cocked her head to one side to study this 'stallion,' her defensive instincts already kicking in and causing her lip to curl...

But then she remembered, cursing herself inwardly. She had JUST been telling herself to be friendlier, yet here she was, prepared to dislike this stallion based on looks alone. She was better than that. So she smoothed down the curling lip, adopting instead what she felt was a properly bright, beaming smile. "Hehlo theyre, yehself," she began in what she felt was a friendly tone before his words caught her up short. Dear??

Be nice, Coralia...

"Yeh're a consehrned fellow, tae be askin' sooch solicitous questions, loike. But dinna be callin' me 'dear,' Laddie, and weh'll be gettin' aloong mooch bettehr." That was nice enough, right?

Nebby was a bit taken aback at the mare. She was looking at him funny. Usually the ladies fawned over his different looks and all his trinkets, and well...this was actually sort of annoying that she wasn't instantly impressed. Or maybe she was, and was just playing hard to get. He could work with hard to get. The large stallion cleared his throat and swayed his tail deliberately, coming even closer to her yet.

"Hey now, just makin' sure you're not in any trouble, my girl." He added the last word pointedly, since she had so kindly asked him not to call her dear. He grinned mischievously at her and batted his eyelids in a joking manner. "Who's to say we aren't gettin' along, hmmm? We've only just met. You're a bit fiesty, aren't yah?" The feline-featured stallion teased, and he grinned even wider as he examined her. She was quite a lovely specimen, those wings, and her wild hair. Pretty girl.

First 'dear,' now it was 'my girl??' How on earth was Coralia supposed to work on being nice and pleasant when the very first person she met after making her decision was so determined to make her kick in his teeth? Odd, catlike appearance aside, she had really tried to give this stallion the benefit of the doubt; yet here he was, determined to ruin that chance she was trying to give him. This was why she hated meeting new people!

This time, she didn't bother to try and suppress the urge to glower at the stallion, her eyes narrowing and her lip curling in a much more pronounced fashion. "I'm troyin' teh be gettin' aloong wit' yeh, Laddie, but I can be tellin yeh roight straight tha' if yeh call meh boy one mahre possessive, patronizin' tehrm, whether it's 'dear' or 'sweet' or 'moy girl,' weh're goin' tae be havin' a serioos disagreement, quite poosiblay wi' my hoof wreaking havoc on those whoite teeth o' yehrs. Moy name is Cora; yeh may be callin' me that, or yeh may be movin' along." There; surely that was nice and polite enough? It wasn't like she'd actually kicked him, just made her point very clear. And while she was at it... "Also, pleyse dinna be encroachin' on moy pehrsonal space, loike. Weh can talk froom a respectable distance, yeh know."

"Well then...Cora." He said with a sick grin that was more of a sneer. "If you be insistin' then." He chuckled a little and took a half-step back. He knew she would pick up that he was teasing her, but that's what Nebby liked to do, and he had gotten good at it, if he didn't say so himself. He flicked his leopard's tail and watched her carefully, awaiting her reaction.

"If you like then, I can try ever so hard not to insult you by speaking in my usual mannerism." He lifted a brow at her challengingly, "And I think a respectable distance doesn't happen unless you ask for it, hear? And so you did..." He trailed off. She was difficult and fiery, and he liked it. The huge stallion was sure he could turn her attitude to his advantage. He put on the act of being a jerk, but he was really quite simple to get along with when it came down to it.

Nebby felt a bit of a tickle at his muzzle, and he knew it was a sneeze. Of course...he tried to hold it but did not accomplish his goal, and as he sneezed, all his trinkets skewed and jingled with the movement. His cheeks turned slightly red as he shook himself all over and tried to regain his composure. Smooth move, idiot....he thought to himself.

It wasn't much, Cora thought with an internal grumble, but at least it was something, the stallion's slight retreat. This was why she hadn't been keen to seek out a new herd; herds were far too...up close and personal. Though as this stallion was ably demonstrating, that was a tendency that extended to individuals as well as groups! But she was trying to be pleasant and agreeable, she reminded herself, and he was at least making an effort to be accommodating. So she, ignoring the weirdness of his grin and the odd tone in his words, once more smoothed her features back into a somewhat pleasant smile.

"Well, Laddie, as long as yeh be makin' an 'oonest effort, loike, then I'm sure weh'll be managin' joost foine. Yeh hed nae way tae ken tha' I'm no' the soort o' mare tha' loikes bein' talked to in sooch a way." Feeling quite magananamous after this declaration, Cora was even able to maintain her smile as the stallion sneezed, sending all his little shinies clinking and clanking about like bare branches in a wind storm. "Bless yeh, Laddie. Yeh soore do rattle aboot a bit, doon't yeh?" From some people, the words could have sounded waspish, but Coralia actually meant it as a friendly statement. Socialization was hard work!
