Survey Mission 6C Location: Centralia, PA (United States) Images:: x, x, x General debriefing: A mine fire has been burning underneath Centralia, PA since 1962. The town is now a ghost town, and FEAR monitoring at the site has spiked. You are being dispatched to investigate a possible source of the disturbance.
There are still five to ten living human residents of Centralia, but they have been deemed a non-issue. Civilian clothing recommended but not enforced. * C class difficulty level (must have a team of three, at least one of them must be an intermediate trainee)
MECHANICS
* MECHANICS: RP assembling a team, as necessary, before heading towards the Lighthouse portal to request a portal to Survey Mission 6C. Once there, roll a 100-sided dice and match the roleplay to the results below, as well as any reactions. Players can continue rolling until any of the players roll a BOSS ENCOUNTER, in which case the BATTLE PHASE begins. See below for battle phase mechanics. 1 - 20: While investigating a fissure in the concrete that is emitting a steady stream of smoke (although it has no smell, making it seem more like fog), you realize you are being watched by a skinny old woman on the sidewalk, in bare feet and wearing a bathrobe. She stares at you, retrieves mail from a mailbox, and then crosses the street to enter a ramshackle home you'd taken to be abandoned, all the while muttering something about "damn trespassing tourists." If you choose to pursue the matter:
The stretch of tarmac she walked across is scorching, blistering hot. If you knock on the door of the house you receive no answer. A quick glance through the windows reveals nothing but scattered debris.
21 - 40: You find one of the town's many enormous sinkholes, clouded with smoke and smelling noxious. From the corner of your eye you see a black shape scuttling across the rim, but by the time you turn to see what it is it has disappeared down into the hole. 41 - 60: The town is in a haze of mist or fog or perhaps low-lying smoke. A mangy feral dog half-lopes, half-limps down the street before disappearing into the rubble of an overgrown lot. If you follow it, you find that it has left charred pawprints that smoke where they pass through the brittle grass. 61 - 70: You find a smoking fissure in the earth, and inadvertently inhale a lungful. You are immediately beset by painful, terrifying hallucinations of twisted faces and the sensation that your skin or internal organs are on fire, burning abruptly and uncontrollably. The illusion is utterly realistic but fortunately short-lived: it passes within five or ten seconds. 71 - 80: Jokesters leave ominous graffiti all over Centralia--"HELP" and "I've Fallen In" next to deep crevices in old roadways--and so it is easy to ignore it. A particular neon green patch of it, however, is scored through again and again (straight through concrete) until it has been almost entirely defaced, and a shredded spray paint can lies nearby. A large streak of neon green paint runs from the ruined graffiti to the lip of a particularly dangerous-looking fissure. 81- 100: BOSS ENCOUNTER: - You spy what appears to be an explorer or perhaps a resident: a young man of perhaps twenty in hipster glasses, smoking a cigarette and gazing down into a sinkhole. He looks up at you and smiles as the earth crumbles beneath his feet, sending him plunging down. You see him take a calm drag before he's swallowed up. Barely a second passes before a great crawling shape heaves itself out of the sinkhole: a charred black being perhaps ten feet tall with a fiery gleam in the cracks of its joints, accompanied by little skittering, emberlike shapes that immediately launch themselves in your direction. It opens its glowing red mouth to roar at you, belching smoke and steam and the smell of sulfur.
- BOSS MECHANICS: This boss is a mob with a collective 100 HP. Every time you attack it (following the general battle rules), you TAKE 8 damage. You will need to deal with both the main monster and also the smaller living embers flanking it, although the latter can actually be stomped out as though they were cigarette butts, if they're in reach. Make sure to tally the boss's total HP (the damage you did to it) at the bottom of your post as well as your total HP and the damage you did that round. If the boss's HP hits 0, you have defeated it, and your team can now take the portal back.
* 2 mission reward points for completing this successfully

Sherry read over the list one more time. A list of trainees she'd gotten her hands on, to be exact. A few names she recognized, possibly from the participation at orientation? Or elsewhere? Hrm.
She picked two names and pulled out her phone and typed a quick text, which she sent to two people.

Text to Harlow: Hello! I'd like to request your assistance on a small recon mission. 3pm @Lighthouse -Sherry, Life Hunter

Text to Zascha: Hello! I'd like to request your assistance on a small recon mission. 3pm @Lighthouse -Sherry, Life Hunter
She waited a moment, then fired off two more texts.

Oh, the joys of being a Full Hunter. Ordered on a mission, but allowed to choose her own team. Surely something like this would be great for trainees. Win win for everyone.
She set about grabbing her own supplies (bandages, flask, pendant) and a simple outfit of jean shorts and and a lightweight, large brown sweater. She planned to be at the lighthouse by 2:40, just in case.

Zascha wasn't too sure who this Sherry person was, but if meeting up with her meant he could get out and do a mission he was more than willing it meet up with this strange Hunter.
Packing a worn brown messenger bag, the Moon trainee put on some dark blue worn jeans and a black short sleeve shirt. A graphic of a man fighting a bear on the front. Once he was ready and had what he needed he headed out of the dorms, making his way to the light house. Checking the clock before he left to make sure he wouldn't be late.
He'd be a little early. Maybe five minutes at the most.
Once he arrived he noticed one other person there, one he didn't recognize so that must have been Sherry. "Afternoon." He called to her with a light wave.

Other than the occasional text, Harlow had given up on expecting to know whoever was texting her. She tucked her phone into her pocket and then started to change up her pocket. Well at least she got to dress a little more like herself. That was exciting! Honestly getting out and doing something exciting like they were not was also pretty fun.
She grabbed a few things out of her closest that she had laying around. A pair of high waisted black shorts, a button up 'sleeveless' shirt and some converse. As she grabbed a drawstring back pack and slung it over her shoulders and then slipped a bandanna around her neck. She always made the effort to be as fashionable as she could. She didn't made it as early as Zascha was but she was pretty close, almost exactly on time.
As she rounded the corner she couldn't help but to get a good chuckle. She felt like almost every mission she was getting called on she was almost always paired with Zascha. It was almost like those few classmates you always got paired with in class because of how your names were placed on the attendance chart.
She approached reaching her hand up and pulling her bag a little closer on to her shoulder. "Hello there!" She greeted to them with a grin on her face.

Sherry was happy to see her summons had been followed. It was generally a good idea to listen to texts giving you a place and a time to be...since sometimes the higher-ups didn't use their own phones. Best to be safe.
"Hello!" Sherry was wearing one of her friendliest smiles. The gentleman was tall, and early, which made her glad she'd been early. "I'm Sherry! I hope you're ready for a little scouting today!" She stuck out her hand for a friendly handshake.
When the third member of the party showed up she received a similar smile and offered hand. "Hi! I'm Sherry! Nice to meet you!"
She nodded approvingly. "Good to see you both followed the clothing instructions. We don't want to stand out too much." Though it felt really weird not wearing her coat.

Taking Sherry's hand, he gave it a firm shake. No limp fish from this guy, nope. "Zascha, nice to meet you Sherry."
He grinned as Harlow made her appearance and he couldn't help taking a perhaps little longer look at her legs in those shorts than was probably necessary. Perhaps they were just destined to always be paired or something to that effect, it seemed to happen more often than normal. But he was ok with that.
"Cutting it pretty close there." He tapped his wrist as if he were tapping a watch which he clearly wasn't wearing. Turning back to Sherry he chuckled. "So what exactly are the details of this mission?"

The fact that the woman appeared to be friendly was an extremely big relief. She really never ran into anyone grumpy, yet, she was still pretty nervous about running into some one who... was grumpy. She could only imagine what dealing with a grumpy hunter would be like.
She ignored what Zascha commented at first reaching her hand out and shaking hers in return. [color-lightseagreen]"It's very nice to meet you!" She grinned and then stepped back toward Zascha giving him a look as she did. "Oh hush." she hissed elbowing him in the side. He had a good question, she looked toward the woman waiting for her to answer.

Sherry grinned at them both, relieved that her semi-random picking of names seemed to have left her with two pleasant people for this mission. That should make things much easier.
"Basically," she began, getting to the point, "we doing some simple reconnaissance and investigation. Either of you ever been to Pennsylvania? We're headed to an old mining town to check out an unusual FEAR reading or two. The town itself should be pretty quiet."
She leaned in a little close for the next part, it kind of fascinated her. "Apparently there is a fire burning in the mine under the town. So almost no one lives there." She leaned back again. "But there are some people there, hence the civilian clothes. Don't want to stand out too much, but we can pass for normal tourists like this."
Sherry nodded in the direction of the portal. "I've got everything set up and ready to go. All we have to do is head over, look around, and write up a report about what we find. Which hopefully won't be much of anything. But I hope you both brought bandages just in case. Are you cleared for bandages?"
She gave them both a very serious look. Bandages were important things, you know.

He made a soft 'oof' at the jab to his side. "Always so graceful."
The Moon trainee's attention turned back to Sherry. "No I haven't been." To be honest Zascha had only visited the United States less times than he could count on one hand. He knew for the most part that it was a state at least.
It did sound interesting for the most part. A mine with a constant fire burning in it? Well that certainly warranted some investigating. His curiosity was peaked. It may be a natural occurrence or preternatural, mine fires like that weren't common but they weren't unheard of either.
His lips pulled tight when she spoke of bandage clearance, Zascha rubbed the back of his neck. "Not runic yet, but soon." This little side mission would put him there at least.

At least the person in charge of this mission seemed a little more friendly than the last. She crossed one of her arms in front of her and held the other near her face as she listened. "I've never been there but I have heard of it. she commented with a nod, she always thought the place sounded interesting but she really never put Much thought into it until now she was pretty glad that she was wearing boots. She heard the ground is pretty hot at some points.
She held her bag and then shifted her weight as she listened. This was going to me an interesting mission for sure. At Sherry's question she shook her head. "Working on it but not yet." With that she stood up straight and grinned. "anything else we should know before we jump in?" she was pretty excited to get going.

"Ah, well. We'll all be seeing something new then. And don't worry. I've got bandages and more." She gave a small smile.
"But I think that's about it. The briefing said there were some civilians, though we should stay away, and we just need to go check out that Fear spike. Should be simple enough." It was something she hoped for, okay. "Let's get going."
With a nod to the portal tech, Sherry motioned the pair to follow her and stepped right on through.
They found themselves in what had once been an alleyway, the house on one side demolished and the wall on the other was falling down. "Let's...head towards the street and look around."

You guys can go ahead and roll!

And replies from my end should be a lot faster now. Sorry about the wait!
Harlow was pretty excited to check out the place honestly. She had heard about this place a few times and she was pretty curious herself on what it was all about. It was one of those places that she would read in the "Most interesting abandoned places" articles that she would run into online when she was bored and stuck on fishing boats with her dad. "Sounds good!" She turned and offered Zascha a small smile and then stepped through the portal. One good thing about working with some one over and over again is you got used to how they worked and handled different situations.
When she walked through she took a moment to look around taking in the surroundings. She was glad that she was wearing shorts honestly it made the uncomfortable heat just a little better. She walked a few steps forward. She took a deep breath in and pulled her bandanna up over her nose. She might have abandoned her scarf but she wasn't about to abandoned something that was going to keep her from dying of funny smells. She looked up and around at her surroundings. The fog was definitely carrying some of those strange smells along with it.

The air he stepped into was warm, a haze in the air. It was an interesting environment to say the least. Slipping his hands into his pockets he cocked an eyebrow at Harlow. "A dog? You know dogs can't survive on the island...."
Out of the corner of his eye he spotted something black moving through the high brush. "I don't think he's alone."
"Hm?" Sherry turned her head, to see this dog. "Keep your eyes open. It...might not be a dog." There was really no basis for her warning, but she felt like giving it. Best to be prepared at all times. For anything.
Smoke curled up out of a crevice, ominous and a little fascinating. "It really does just burn under the town. Crazy."
She eyed the crevice, noting the graffiti behind it.
Quote:

A large streak of neon green paint runs from the ruined graffiti to the lip of a particularly dangerous-looking fissure.
A particular patch of green caught her eye, standing out among the old and aged words left by various people. Well, the green itself was eye-catching, but so was the damage done to it. "Claw marks?"
"Yeah. Keep an eye on those dogs," she said. "Something killed that spray can."
Harlow's eyes wandered around the area, she was trying to be as cautious as she could, not only that but was making sure to keep an eye out for anything that looked super suspicious. She was wondering if they did find something what exactly they were going to do if they did find something. She wandered her way to the side of the fissure, she looked around curiously, she was unsure of what might have dragged the can in but she was curious. Her eyes turned up as she had a funny feeling some one was watching.

Well Sherry was right, there were residents in this place and they sure as hell didn't seem friendly either. "Damn Grumpy locals." She murmured in return as the lady closed the door behind her.
