It had been another terrible practice! Moondance botched every move. She landed on her face more times than her hooves while attempting leaps. Everypony in her dance class was laughing at her, and she couldn't take it, so she left. She ran out of the building, and to the first place she thought of, her mom's house. Aurora Light was one of the most graceful and refined mares in Phonyland. She was not only gifted at snow sculpting, but also the lead singer of a rock band. She had two special talents, and Moondance couldn't even master one. She usually felt inadequate around Aurora, and she wasn't sure her mom even knew what it was like to be this big of a failure. Moondance tried to keep her composure as she came in the front door, but as soon as she shut it behind her, the tears came pouring out.

Aurora was at home enjoying a little quiet time for a change. Belldandy at flute lessons, Crooner with his vocal coach, Moon was at dance practice, and Pale was with Drama at rehearsals. Sheets of new music were scattered around the coffee table, a sheet with lyrics in her hooves. "Mmmm..." she scratched out a line, slowly singing out a different line "Do I love you or the thought of you.." she hummed the next few bars of the song before the sound of front door opening caused her to pause. Odd, no one should be home yet. She rounded the corner of the living room to find her daughter in the foyer in tears. "Moondance, honey, what's wrong?" the mare cooed, gently stroking her mane.

She was so glad mom was home! It really was embarrassing for her to be crying, but at this moment she needed hugs more than she needed her dignity. "Practice was terrible!" she said between sobs, "I'm never going to be a great dancer. I keep falling, and everyone laughs at me!" At this point, she was just working herself up. "I'm just going to be a clumsy foal forever! I'll have to get a job being a carnie at the theme park and live out of a box!"

Aurora smiled and cuddled Moondancer close. "Well carnies the the park here have steady pay and all the popcorn and cotton candy you can eat." she cooed jokingly. "Come here, come here.." though harder to do now, Aurora lifted her daughter up and onto the couch in the living room. She frowned a little at her description of being laughed at. Aurora would have to have a talk with the teacher if that was a case. But at the moment she needed to bring Moon's spirits up. "Is it a certain move or step that's giving you problems?"

The idea of free cotton candy did appeal to her. But she would much rather be a dancer and have people throw bundles of cotton candy at her on the stage. It would be a tastier option than throwing roses. She'd have to file that idea away for later. Moondance wiped her eyes off and began to calm down, the worst of her fit was over. She snuggled in close to Aurora on the couch. "Well...." it was kind of hard to narrow it down to just one move that was giving her problems, and she knew it wouldn't help to reply by saying 'everything'. "This week," she began, "we were doing spins in the air. You kind of start squatted down, and then you push yourself up and try to twirl all the way around. I kept missing the landing, and fell every time."

Waiting till Moondancer calmed down properly, she listened to the description of the dance move. Hmm. It was more complex then most of the moves she sometimes did on stage, but maybe she could help the filly find out why she couldn't land the step. The mare stood, leaving Moon swaddled in the couch throw. She pushed back the coffee table and a large chair. "Ok squatted down.." she hunkered down a bit on her thin, long legs. "Push yourself into the air.." that was easier, she knew how to fly. "And try and twirl all the way around.." On instinct, as she pushed off her hoof, her wings opened to fly. Aurora snapped them back down to herself, after all Moondancer didn't have wings. Closing her wings turned her twist into a mid-air flail and she landed with a plop on her flank. Her long tail was corkscrewed around her back leg and her mane looked like it was trying to strangle her. Blowing strands of hair from her face, she mustered as much dignity as she could and said; "Well, that IS a little more difficult then it sounds.."

Moondance looked on in horror as her mom spun and then fell. Did she look that ridiculous when she was trying to do it in class? No wonder they were all laughing at her. It was the least graceful she had ever seen Aurora. She couldn't even contemplate what just happened. The filly stood up and walked over to her, offering a hoof to help her get back up. "Here, let me show you what I mean," she said. Maybe she had left out something in her description. Moondance bent at the knees, and propelled herself into the air. She started to spin, and then at about half way though, she prematurely landed. Her spin wasn't fast enough to make it all the way around. Her hooves got tangled though, and she also fell right onto her butt. She groaned. That was not at all what she wanted to do.

Aurora winced as her daughter landed on her butt beside her. Suddenly, giggled welled up in her chest, and she started to laugh softly. "Aren't we an ungraceful pair?" she giggle, nuzzling her daughter on the cheek. "Did I look like that when I did it? I can do better!" She popped back on her hooves and brushed her hair back with a swish. She crouched, pushed up and as she tried to twist, made her legs do a wriggly octopus dance, doing a over dramatic duck face, landing again on her flank. She began to laugh in earnest. "Tell me Moon, was I graceful?" she managed to ask, laugh tears at the corners of her eyes.

Now she couldn't help but laugh! She had never thought she'd see her mom make a duckface. She quickly stood up. "No! Let me show you how much more graceful I am!" She jumped, and this time intentionally messed it up. Moondance flung her front legs out in a "I'm king of the world!" pose. Her hair flew up and everywhere, and then fell forward to cover her face. She spun a part way and then fell on her butt again, laughing.

Laughing, Aurora stomped applauded Moondancers's spin. "My turn my turn!" She wriggled her bum, jumping into the air, flapping her legs like bird wings. "CAW CAWW!" she shrieked as she glided in the air, clumsily landing on her hooves but skidding across the floor and colliding into Pale Moonlight's piano seat. The flutter laid across it, laughing hysterically.

The tears started flowing form Moondance's eyes again, but this time they were from laughter. Her mom was good at a lot of things, but being a bird was not one of them! It was one of the funniest things she had ever seen! She ran over to Aurora and gave her a big hug. "Thanks for cheering me up, mom!"

Aurora wiped her laugh tears away and hugged Moondancer, brushing some of her mane out of her eyes. "I know you'll master that move one day, but if you happen to land on your flank, laugh along with your classmates. I don't think they're laughing to be mean, after all I'm sure several of them have landed on their butts and you may have inwardly giggled right?" She tickled her daughter lightly. "Feel better right don't you?"

She smiled and hugged Aurora again. "I do feel a lot better!" Moondance was going to try, going forward, to laugh at her mistakes, and try to move on from them. Laughing felt better than crying.
