Name: Jakkin
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Straight
Craft/Rank: Weyrbrat (interested in weavercraft as alternate to Impression)
History: Jakkin was born to J'ri when she was eighteen turns old. Until a clutch was laid, the infant remained with his mother; when she Impressed, he was placed into the creche. He grew close to his brother Jaric with time, and to J'ric's father, whom he considered his own. Living in the creche, he got to know other children his age; and quickly learned he wasn't particularly fond of them.
He loved the rare occasion when he could spend time with his mother, and her dragon. He learned from a young age that he loved the creatures; they appealed to him far more than their human counterparts.
Jakkin was for the most part kept ignorant of the revolution. J'ri had kept him, his brother, and other children in a small room where they were safe and entertained. When they were allowed outside, he was made aware of the fact that many of the dragons he had so admired, had left the Weyr, Whers had replaced them. Jakkin had never been fond of the creatures, despite the fact that Gerric had bonded to one. The man had brought the thing once, and he had wanted nothing to do with it.
He was old enough to have realized what had happened to the Weyr, though his mother tried to convince him otherwise. Horrible things had happened, and though he did not understand why, he listened. He heard boasts, he heard rumors. While he certainly shared his opinions with his mother, he kept his mouth shut for the most part.
He stuck to his own; keeping an eye on Jaric whenever he could, and becoming an apprentice weaver. He always loved the finer things; and as candidate lessons were not happening, involved himself in that. He was thrilled (and somewhat envious) when Jaric went on to Impress a bronze. That envy was short lived, however, and pride came through. His younger brother was a rider!
Description: Jakkin is tall for sixteen turns, and relatively bony. He has few distinguishing features. He has an oval shaped face that he's rather proud of; he has bony hands. He is tan with black, slightly curly hair, like his mother's. He has an air of someone who is very careful about his appearance. His clothes have been mended in many places. There have been small repairs and a few are becoming threadbare in some areas--it seems he's always working on improving them with left over scraps.
Personality: Seemingly cold and distant, this isn't exactly the type of boy you'd want to run up to and befriend. Half of the time, he ignores the majority of people - and when he doesn't, you'll wish he had. He has a bad habit of pointing people's flaws and weaknesses out to them, and if anyone ever criticizes him he either takes it with a silent shrug or seems to ignore them. Most of this socially unacceptable behavior is his way of entertaining himself, and seeing what kind of person someone is.
He seems to have no tact; he has no concept of keeping his opinions and ideas to himself, if he feels like sharing them. Jakkin has built an impenetrable wall around himself and his feelings - reinforced with an unfriendly demeanor.
What really captures Jakkin's interest is a conversation that he can pick holes into. If you're talking plans and they don't add up, this boy will be there to point them out for you. In an attempt to make conversation more interesting for him, Jakkin will often form stories to tell others. Whether true or false, you won't be able to tell. He can weave a story as well as any harper. Maybe he should have been one. He has a sense of humor that isn't often seen--he will be caught chuckling at other's flaws quite often. They seem to amuse him.
Since attempting to connect with people, Jakkin has shown a slow, but terrible temper. While he prefers to act as though nothing bothers him, there are times when he will fly off the handle, indulging in fits of temper brought about by seemingly unpredictable mood-swings. These are verbal (he is not physical in his anger whatsoever, with the exception of animatedly moving his arms and gesturing wildly) and he will fuss later on to Jaric. He appears to trust (and tease) Jaric more than those he interacts with outside his family. Often the moods of others amuse him; he feels he can play anyone as easily as he can mend a hem.
There is a startling difference between Jakkin's neat appearance and his alcove in the candidate barracks. Though his small space has few personal items, there always seems to be something on the floor. Patterns and old scraps of previous projects. Charcoal and used hide litter his cot when he's not sleeping there. If ever asked, Jakkin would claim the mess helps with his ability to think. He won't thank anyone for cleaning it--he wants it that way, thank you very much. He knows exactly where everything is.
Jakkin is a compulsive liar. He does not like to be cornered and made to provide an answer. He doesn't want others knowing what he's really thinking or feeling at any given time. This stems from childhood; his parents having been involved in the revolution. Jakkin believes that a cleverly placed lie can save lives. This candidate quickly became skilled with words.
Jakkin, despite his unfriendly demeanor, seems to be indifferent to most people. If there is genuine dislike, he will make it known through his silences. He will take the time to argue with those he is indifferent to--or respects; those he does not, he will pointedly ignore. An example of this is when he spends time with his brother, Jaric. Though he seems to resent his younger brother often enough, a more observant person would notice how he becomes more animated when he banters with his family.
Despite this tendency for affectionate bickering, this boy also tends to be protective of his younger brother. Not so much that it shows itself physically; but certainly to a point where he will defend them verbally.
