Warm sunlight filtered down through the shady canopy, casting intermingled shadows and beams of light on the ground below. A light breeze rustled the leaves, causing them to dance as clouds drifted idly across the sky. It was peaceful, a little sanctuary amidst the at-times chaotic and bewildering lands.
On this quiet day, a young mare wandered through the forest, her hoofsteps soft upon the forest floor. She was quite dainty, fragile even, though her soft steps were not from any lack of strength rather a genuine concern for all life, no matter how small. She often found that moving carefully was best, when young buds and tender saplings- or even those tiny creatures called ants!- could be moving around and just-barely-escape her hooves; light steps allowed her more time to alter her course before unknowingly doing any harm.
She breathed the cool air, and smiled peacefully as a passing cloud caused a shadow to crawl across her hind end. Such a lovely day to explore.

Elen paused in her travels as the stallion approached. She began to smile at his cheerful greeting, then blinked at his question. Monsters? "Hello. No... I have come to no harm, nor seen any who might wish to do me- or anyone else- any ills." Her voice was soft, a soothing tone that rang with quiet confidence.
A simple 'no' might have sufficed, but she felt that her clarification added reassurance.
Her front leg slowly landed on the ground- just dirt, no ants- as she came to a complete stop, her eyes dancing lightly over the stallion's form in sudden concern. Surely the question did not spring from nowhere?
When she noticed his slight limp, her nostrils flared slightly as if to scent the air- instinct- and her ears swiveled back and forth in search of any cause for alarm. Her eyes, though, remained fixed on him. "Have you?" He was remarkably cheerful, for one who seemed hurt... he did not seem to be in immediate need of a healer, so her expression softened once more as her gaze rejoined his own.

Elen was still smiling when his solemn words caused her expression to fall slightly. Perhaps, she wondered, not solemn, rather simply matter-of-fact... she was no fool, to think that evil did not exist, or that just because it was not visible it was not there. Who knew what creatures lurked in the shadows?
Glancing at the brush and a few trees with mild suspicion, she turned her gaze back to him when nothing popped out at her.
He had approached, yet lingered at a respectful distance. Her heart warmed; so many would charge in, uninvited, putting her ill-at-ease and caught in an uncomfortable position, too polite to ask for a little room. She didn't mind his approach, not at all, and that he was nearer allowed her to see that he truly was not harmed... well, despite that oh-so-faint and yet oh-so-worrying limp. His reassurance was not quite... reassuring... and her brow puckered slightly as she took a gentle breath. "I trust that you would know if you were in immediate need of a healer." if only she had the powers of a Unicorn, to mend whatever internal damage his repeated falls had done.... yet, alas, she was simple Elen, and he... claimed to be fine.
Her ears perked at his offer, and a rather pleased flush accompanied her smile. "That would be most welcome..." she trailed of, realizing that in her concern and haste to answer his questions she had failed to introduce herself. "Oh... My name is Elen, forgive me." She dipped her head slightly, then rose again to meet his gaze. "I was heading nowhere in particular, though I have heard of a lovely waterfall not too far off..." She didn't have a clear plan, really, of where to be or when to pass which marking... she was exploring, simple and true, and she would most welcome the companionship of this intriguing stallion.

The mare watched as the stallion nodded as if to confirm his words, letting out a gentle breath as she allowed herself to be reassured. Her concern was genuine, though time was proving it to be perhaps unwarranted in this case. He was Fine.
As he gave his name, the color faded from her cheeks and she was just smiling again. "It is... a pleasure to meet you, Umbra." She said, the pause due to the realization of the sincerity of those polite words- not any hesitation as to their truth. "Alright, this I can do... though I have never been there myself, I know the general direction, and if we reach the mountain-tops we have gone too far." Not the most confidence-inspiring proclamation, but one promising adventure even if they got a little lost.
She blinked at his sudden outburst, not offended rather mildly surprised; her thoughts had wandered to an attempt to map out their location and proximity to the waterfall. As he continued, her gaze flickered over the curved ears poking out from beneath his rakishly parted mane. A Cerynei of the stars- a truly unique birth, to be sure. "I am half-Hippogryph, or a 'half-o-gryph' as my brother calls us. We are not an over-large family, just my parents and us two, as..." perhaps this was sharing too much, but he would surely say if he had not wanted the fully story "... my father's family ostracized him for loving a non-Gryph."
It didn't make any sense to her, but she understood that each individual had their own principles and would react poorly if those were violated in any way. She just couldn't imagine physical traits... mattering that much, to abandon one whom you claimed to love for loving another.
"If I remember correctly, it is said that a nearby river is fed from a large lake, and we must pass around that to approach the waterfalls." In good spirits, despite the memory of family drama, she led her companion onwards, enjoying the cool wind ruffling the feathers on her rump.
