Warm sunlight filtered down through the shady canopy, casting intermingled shadows and beams of light on the ground below. A light breeze rustled the leaves, causing them to dance as clouds drifted idly across the sky. It was peaceful, a little sanctuary amidst the at-times chaotic and bewildering lands.

On this quiet day, a young mare wandered through the forest, her hoofsteps soft upon the forest floor. She was quite dainty, fragile even, though her soft steps were not from any lack of strength rather a genuine concern for all life, no matter how small. She often found that moving carefully was best, when young buds and tender saplings- or even those tiny creatures called ants!- could be moving around and just-barely-escape her hooves; light steps allowed her more time to alter her course before unknowingly doing any harm.

She breathed the cool air, and smiled peacefully as a passing cloud caused a shadow to crawl across her hind end. Such a lovely day to explore.

Another whirlwind of a morning it was. He spent most of it running away from his shadow again and when he finally got away from it, he found himself tumbling down a hill. It was fun to say the least, but he did hurt his leg. He didn’t show it because it was like the millionth time he hurt the damn thing. He shrugged his shoulders and walked with a limp as if it was the best damn limp of his life.

He didn’t even know where he was going anymore. He left his family land and really didn’t even know where to go. He had done so much traveling as a colt, he saw everything or at least he believes he saw everything. But then he stumbled upon something interesting. A mare with a feather butt. He never met someone with feathers other then his cousin. She always explained to him that it was a nice head piece and she wasn’t some two bit harpy. She was always angry when it came to harpies. He didn’t get it. So with a cheerful mind, he walked over to the mare and grinned like a fool. “Hello!” He said cheerfully. He was like a giant foal. He always had been this way. “You haven’t seen any monsters have you?” he asked her as if it was the most normal thing in the world.

Elen paused in her travels as the stallion approached. She began to smile at his cheerful greeting, then blinked at his question. Monsters? "Hello. No... I have come to no harm, nor seen any who might wish to do me- or anyone else- any ills." Her voice was soft, a soothing tone that rang with quiet confidence.

A simple 'no' might have sufficed, but she felt that her clarification added reassurance.

Her front leg slowly landed on the ground- just dirt, no ants- as she came to a complete stop, her eyes dancing lightly over the stallion's form in sudden concern. Surely the question did not spring from nowhere?

When she noticed his slight limp, her nostrils flared slightly as if to scent the air- instinct- and her ears swiveled back and forth in search of any cause for alarm. Her eyes, though, remained fixed on him. "Have you?" He was remarkably cheerful, for one who seemed hurt... he did not seem to be in immediate need of a healer, so her expression softened once more as her gaze rejoined his own.

The stallion watched her closely feeling better about speaking with her. She wasn’t going to harm him, but it meant that he would have to make sure no harm came to her. “That is a good thing then. There are so many evil creatures out there and you don’t want to run into any of them.” He gave a firm nod and walked a little closer to her before stopping. He didn’t want to be too close to her. He knew personal boundaries were something he had to be watchful of. He didn’t want to end up getting into a fight because of it.

He looked down at his leg and shrugged his shoulders a bit. “Me? I just fell. I’m falling all the time there is no need to worry.” He nodded and looked away from her. He really didn’t care too much about his leg. He hurt himself all the time. He always had cuts and bruises fro running through thorny bushes or tumbling everywhere. “So since your alone you probably should have an escort. I don’t really think it will be safe for you to wander alone...but first...where are you going?” He tilted his head and wondered a little bit where the mare was headed.

Elen was still smiling when his solemn words caused her expression to fall slightly. Perhaps, she wondered, not solemn, rather simply matter-of-fact... she was no fool, to think that evil did not exist, or that just because it was not visible it was not there. Who knew what creatures lurked in the shadows?

Glancing at the brush and a few trees with mild suspicion, she turned her gaze back to him when nothing popped out at her.

He had approached, yet lingered at a respectful distance. Her heart warmed; so many would charge in, uninvited, putting her ill-at-ease and caught in an uncomfortable position, too polite to ask for a little room. She didn't mind his approach, not at all, and that he was nearer allowed her to see that he truly was not harmed... well, despite that oh-so-faint and yet oh-so-worrying limp. His reassurance was not quite... reassuring... and her brow puckered slightly as she took a gentle breath. "I trust that you would know if you were in immediate need of a healer." if only she had the powers of a Unicorn, to mend whatever internal damage his repeated falls had done.... yet, alas, she was simple Elen, and he... claimed to be fine.

Her ears perked at his offer, and a rather pleased flush accompanied her smile. "That would be most welcome..." she trailed of, realizing that in her concern and haste to answer his questions she had failed to introduce herself. "Oh... My name is Elen, forgive me." She dipped her head slightly, then rose again to meet his gaze. "I was heading nowhere in particular, though I have heard of a lovely waterfall not too far off..." She didn't have a clear plan, really, of where to be or when to pass which marking... she was exploring, simple and true, and she would most welcome the companionship of this intriguing stallion.

He found this mare to be quite fascinating. She reminded him of his father. She was calm and very collected. He liked seeing that in others especially since he couldn't handle someone who was overly bubbly or irritating. He hadn't met someone even close to that and hoped he never did. He was a handful all in himself. "Yes my leg will be fine. If anything serious happens I'm sure I can find someone that could tend to it." He nodded a bunch of times hoping she would trust his words about his leg. The mare was odd. He had to admit that, but it wasn't something he would run away from. He was odd himself and he knew that being odd was never a bad thing. Her feather butt was catching his eyes, but he was too distracted by everything else to even worry about asking her anything that resembled a question.

He wasn't expecting a weird pink color on her cheeks. He didn't know what that was about, but he would get over it. He rarely thought on things so he mostly shrugged them off. "My name is Umbra." He watched her and didn't even care that they didn't say each other's name at first. He didn't know why it didn't bother him especially since his father was all about manners. He just didn't worry about things. "Oh a waterfall? Let's go there then! But you will have to lead the way. I never seen a waterfall before or know where one is." He said keeping his white eyes on her. He was interested in her for the pure reason that he wanted to see what the normal folk did.

"So..ummm....what are you exactly?" He asked as they slowly began to walk. He didn't even know what just came out of his mouth, but it happened. He couldn't take it back at all. "I'm half-Cerynei..Supposedly I come from the stars, but I don't even know if that is possible. My father has a very big family." He told her and rarely did he ever talk about his family. Most of the time he couldn't even remember who was who, but he did at least know the basics. "Do you have a big family?" He asked looking over to her with curious eyes.

The mare watched as the stallion nodded as if to confirm his words, letting out a gentle breath as she allowed herself to be reassured. Her concern was genuine, though time was proving it to be perhaps unwarranted in this case. He was Fine.

As he gave his name, the color faded from her cheeks and she was just smiling again. "It is... a pleasure to meet you, Umbra." She said, the pause due to the realization of the sincerity of those polite words- not any hesitation as to their truth. "Alright, this I can do... though I have never been there myself, I know the general direction, and if we reach the mountain-tops we have gone too far." Not the most confidence-inspiring proclamation, but one promising adventure even if they got a little lost.

She blinked at his sudden outburst, not offended rather mildly surprised; her thoughts had wandered to an attempt to map out their location and proximity to the waterfall. As he continued, her gaze flickered over the curved ears poking out from beneath his rakishly parted mane. A Cerynei of the stars- a truly unique birth, to be sure. "I am half-Hippogryph, or a 'half-o-gryph' as my brother calls us. We are not an over-large family, just my parents and us two, as..." perhaps this was sharing too much, but he would surely say if he had not wanted the fully story "... my father's family ostracized him for loving a non-Gryph."

It didn't make any sense to her, but she understood that each individual had their own principles and would react poorly if those were violated in any way. She just couldn't imagine physical traits... mattering that much, to abandon one whom you claimed to love for loving another.

"If I remember correctly, it is said that a nearby river is fed from a large lake, and we must pass around that to approach the waterfalls." In good spirits, despite the memory of family drama, she led her companion onwards, enjoying the cool wind ruffling the feathers on her rump.

Blinking at the mare a few times, he followed her thinking on her words and wondered what it would be like to be completely exiled from your family. He didn’t know what he would do without his family behind him let alone his father. It was definitely a scary thought and one he didn’t want to become real. But as they ventured, he kept close to her, listening to everything she was saying even if he didn’t respond right away. He was still stuck on the family comment and not understanding why anyone would even do such a thing. “Why would they do that to him? He can’t help who he loves…why would anyone want to banish him just because of something he can’t help?” He asked looking at her for a moment then looking away. It made him sad and he wondered if his family members would do the same thing if he ended up with a harpy. He knew their feelings on them, but if he fell in love with one, he wasn’t going to deny it just to please them. Then again he didn’t even really know what love was. He knew it was something his father felt for his other father, but beyond that nothing. “I hope he is okay with not being able to see his family.” He nodded thinking it was best he got off the topic before he thought too far into it.

“Half-gryph? That is interesting. I’m only part Cerynei so I’m nothing special.” He nodded glancing before them at where they were going. It was nice to be out and seeing things he never saw before. He was a little afraid of what awaited them at the end of their journey. He always hated parting ways with others since he rarely saw them again. “I am excited to see this waterfall. They are so pretty and are quite rare to find. I think I found one when I was a colt, but other then that…I haven’t seen one since.” He said nodding a bunch of times and grinning like a fool. “I just hope there are no more monsters there. The last time there were so many there and I couldn’t even enjoy myself. I just don’t feel like running today.” He said to her not finding it strange to be telling her things like this.

“So..what kind of things do you like to do?” He asked tilting his head a little bit as he walked beside her not even taking in any of the scenery. He was too focused on her and the conversation at the moment. He noticed small things here and there, but nothing really amazing. “Your markings actually remind me of an uncle of mine. Or better yet…they kind of fit into my family. My father can see and speak with ghosts. So it’s actually pretty amazing to see something like that on someone else. They look like little ghosties taking over your body.” He said to her lightly before seeing them begin to move and blinked a couple times. They were still moving and little did he know that it was just all in his head. “They do move!” He said to her in a small shout as he watched them danced around her body before shaking his head with his eyes closed. They went back to being stagnant again and smiled. “They went back to sleep again.” He didn’t know that there was something wrong with him mentally. Everything he saw was just the norm for him.

“Oh! Oh! There is the lake!” He shouted before bolting for the lake and jumping right in. He was a strange one.
