“Casseth—”
Lithian shuddered, losing his words under the press of Cas’ mouth and whining into the kiss as Cas’ fingers looped around his wrists like shackles and pinned them above his head — against the back, outside wall of his house.
Location, Lithian decided with the distracted mentality of a man with more immediate things preoccupying his mind, and the innate vulnerability of public places, was something he needed to give Casseth another lengthy speech on. Later. For the moment, Eowyn — even in the late afternoon — felt like a slow burn under his tunic, and with Casseth pressed against him, holding him down and making his body heat further—
Both of them had far too many clothes on.
“Cas—” Lith’s fingers bunched at Cas’ hips, dragging him in tight, grinding, and panting in frustration. “We should—here isn’t…nnnh—maybe if we—” After very little actually said, however, Lithian gave up again, letting his eyes fall back shut and conceding to let Casseth lead the moment.

“Here is fine.” Casseth growled low in his throat as he kissed from Lith’s lips, down to his neck. He pressed against Lith, pinning him even more against the back of the house as he nuzzled and nipped at Lith’s neck. “I can’t get enough of you.” Another kiss and a lick up to Lith’s ear. “I love you,” he whispered as he nipped at Lith’s ear and his hands moved away from Lith’s wrists and tugged at the ties on his tunic. Before long, Cas was working at Lithian’s clothes, dropping his cloak to the ground and unfastening the belts on his vest. More kisses traveled over Lith’s ear and neck and back to his lips, nipping briefly as he went. Deft fingers made quick work of the laces of Lithian’s tunic and Cas soon found his his hands touching bare skin. He groaned and shuddered as his skin made contact with Lith’s.
Cas’ hands trailed down, stopping at the belts at Lithian’s waist. He pulled back reluctantly and carefully undid the clasps and laid the belt and flasks off to the side carefully. In an instant, he was back to Lithian, his lips crushing Lith’s as he tugged at the ties holding Lith’s braids. When they were gone, Cas’ fingers were tangling into the strands, separating them. His hands began to trail down, again, fingers lightly running over Lith’s arms, up to his chest and down over his stomach. Just as he was about to start working on Lith’s pants someone cleared his throat.
Cas growled, body tensing and wings, already exposed, spreading out to cover Lithian from view. His tail whipped back and forth angrily, ready for a fight if need be. The voice that followed the noise, though, made Cas pause. "Lithian...keeping your promises, I see,” Kilian said. Though sarcasm was apparent in his statement, Kilian’s voice remained neutral beyond that.
Cas shuddered, wings sagging and forehead resting against Lith’s shoulder. He hadn’t expected his father home any time soon and hadn’t dreamed of being caught. Though most of the tension, from being caught, left Cas’ body some remained. He had yet to talk to his dad about his relationship with Lithian and so was not sure how Kilian would react to what he had just seen.

Lithian froze. Pulse somersaulting into his throat, he yanked his hands — which had taken up comfortable residence on Casseth’s posterior — backwards so fast, his elbows slammed into the wall behind him hard enough to make him wince and bite back a yelp. Identifying Kilian did little to calm more than the upper crust of panic, and in its place, heat flooded his face, neck, and ears.
“I—I—I…ah…that…” Biting his lip, Lithian cringed and reached around to rub at his smarting elbows, knees bending a fraction and shoulders sinking and pinching in as though in a vain attempt to make himself smaller — or disappear altogether. “Yes, sir. That is…no, sir. What I mean is…” Lithian dipped his eyes to the ground, laying his hands back against the wall — pointedly not touching Casseth — and then frowning as he spotted his clothes. Flushing, if possible, darker still, he stooped, gathering them clumsily to distract his shaking fingers as much as anything else. With them in his arms, he stood. “Casseth made it…very difficult, sir. Not that—not that it was his fault! I—I’m sure it was entirely my fault, in point of fact and you shouldn’t—that is, please don’t…if you’re going to…I can leave—”

Casseth frowned as he stepped away from Lith and turned to face his father. “Promise…?” His gaze flit to Lith, eyebrows raised as Lith straightened back up, clothes in hand. Cas was extremely curious about this so called promise Lithian had given his father. Had they talked, in private, about Lith and his relationship already? He frowned, stepping back close to Lith as he spoke. “You’re not leaving,” Cas said as he reached an arm out and snaked it around Lith’s waist, tugging him close and not letting him escape. “You leave, I leave.”
Kilian grunted and shook his head as he eyed Lithian. “You don’t have to leave. Though I do suggest you redress yourself.”
Casseth relaxed even more at his father’s words. Relieved that he wasn’t going to make Lithian leave. He didn’t even seem mad, just slightly irritated at finding them in the midst of undressing out in the open. Cas moved away from Lith, to allow him to put his clothes back on, and rubbed his arms. He had hoped to bring this up to his father in a smoother way but what was done, was done. At least now he knew. Cas sighed as he eyed his father.
“How long has this been going on?” Kilian asked finally.

After making quick work of slipping back into his clothes and fastening his belts, Lithian shifted his weight, glancing to Casseth, then Kilian, and back again.
“Your father suspected my…feelings for you quite some time ago. Well over a year now…close to two? I promised him at the time that I wouldn’t—that I had no intentions of ruining our friendship or making you uncomfortable, and that I wouldn’t touch you…” When his gaze flit back to Kilian, he reached up, abashed as he thumbed over the tip of one of his horns. “In answer to your question, sir, we’ve…well…it’s been a matter of several months now? We, er…during our time on Aisko, it…mm…we…” After several failed attempts at vague hand gestures as he tried to make his point, words failing him, Lithian’s face burned all the brighter. “The precise nature of our relationship changed on Aisko…dramatically, in some areas. Less so in others.”

Casseth narrowed his eyes at his father, slightly angry that he had known about Lithian’s feelings but had not told him. Though, in the end, Cas supposed it had been for the best. He really couldn’t blame his father for not wanting to get into the middle of something like that and Cas had never gave any indication that he liked guys. He grunted as the subject switched over to how long things had been going on. Cas couldn’t help but let a small smile curl up the corners of his lips as Lithian tried to put full sentences together smoothly.
As Cas reached out for Lithian’s hand and laced their fingers together, Kilian’s gaze followed. Casseth managed to keep most of the blush out of his cheeks but at his next words, he felt the tips of his ears heat. “I love him.” He gave a squeeze to Lithian’s hand as his tail snaked carefully around one of Lith’s legs. Cas hesitated, chewing on his bottom lip as he squeezed Lith’s hand and took a deep breath. “We’re lo...what I mean is we...I...mmm…” Casseth’s face flushed as he tried to find the right words and finally clinging to the first word that came to mind, despite not understanding the full implications of the word itself, and what it might mean in Lithian’s culture. “We’re mates.”
Kilian’s eyebrows rose at the words, head tilting as he eyed Lithian. “Mate, hmm?”
At both his father’s look and tone of voice, Casseth became unsure of himself. His grip on Lith’s hand loosened slightly as he glanced to his friend. “I…”
Kilian only smiled slightly. “It seems, maybe, you two have some things to talk about.” He turned to leave but paused. “You’re welcome here any time Lithian.”

At the word ‘mates’, Lithian’s eyebrows shot up in spite of himself. While they had slept together — many times now, he thought, face still brilliantly warm — the term ‘mate’, at least amongst the dovaa, involved a process of courting, a question and an answer from both parties, build-up, and then a ceremony involving the blessings of family on both sides of the coupling. It was an extensive process, steeped in culture, and while he had to admit, his current relationship was unorthodox in a number of ways, it still felt abrupt, even jarring, to an extent, to have the term pinned on him without precedent.
At Kilian’s knowing response, though, and the look he gave both of them, Lithian had to assume Casseth simply did not associate any of the same cultural values with the term, and was applying it from a foreign perspective — which, Lithian supposed, was entirely understandable. After watching Kilian leave, Lithian squeezed at their intertwined hands, turned to face Casseth and hesitated.
“Cas…I—” He bit his lip, wondering how best to phrase his thoughts so that they would not offend the man before him, but still get across his meaning. “I would love to be your mate. I am your lover, and we have shared a bed, and I would like nothing more than to be mated with you, share a name, title, and family. In my culture, though, that—attaining that…it involves a process. One I wish — one I would certainly hope — that you would want to go through with me, but not one we have completed yet. It is an immense step, one involving preparation, time, thought, coin…it involves family, friends, ritual…and it is the stepping stone that separates the sort of relationship you have had with the women in the past, whom you have cared for, and bedded, but did not choose to spend the remainder of your life with and…I would hope…the relationship you wish to have with me. If it is your intention to spend your life with me, as I would hope to do with you, then tradition would dictate that either you, or I, would request to court the other…”
Lithian hesitated, eyeing Casseth, trying to gauge his reaction.
“It wouldn’t need to be anything formal, simply…an agreement, between the two of us, that we were serious, and on the road to a life together. And, while on that road, it would give us time to plan an official ceremony, which…” He dipped his eyes, abashed, “…I have always hoped to have, with whomever I took as my mate, and would hope you might partake in, with me…”

Casseth tensed, frowning as Lithian went into detail about what being mates involved for him. He had never, once, considered using the word mate with any of his girlfriends. He knew that it was a serious word and meant things that he hadn’t been ready for with them. However, the amount of things involved with the word in Lithian’s culture, something completely foreign to him, was almost dizzying.
Cas took a deep breath, wings tucking in close to him and tail twitching back and forth as he shifted through all the information Lithian was giving him. He had used the word so lightly and it meant so much more than just a title to Lith. It made him blush, knowing so little of the cultures that made up his very blood. He knew mostly oblivionite traditions, because of his father, but they rarely followed them, so distanced from their race as they both were. Even though it was a lot to take in, Cas snatched onto one small, snippet of information. Spending the rest of his life with Lith. ’Yes!’ His mind screamed out at the same time he tugged Lith forward.
“You want that? To spend the rest of your life with me?” Cas didn’t wait for an answer before his lips were on Lithian’s, kissing deeply. He forced himself to break the kiss before things got too far again and he sent up a silent prayer to whatever god would listen to a hybrid. “Will you…?” He frowned at the vague question, shaking his head and trying again. “What I mean is...I’d love nothing more than to spend the rest of my life with you. If you’ll have me.”
’Please.’

Lithian blinked, momentarily overrun by the unanticipated change of events. By the end, though, he was beaming beyond control, pulse quick, and eyes damp when he caught Casseth’s chin in his hands. He kissed him. Again. And again, fingers shaking from the abundance of emotions with no other outlet.
“Of course,” he said, lacing the words between kisses and then holding his ground, eyes shut and forehead pressed to Casseth. “My god, of course I’ll have you. Cas…I can’t remember ever wanting something more…”
And so it was that Lithian Bhardvaris and Casseth Fedele — a highborn peisio dovaa of solid repute and mixblooded hybrid with ties to little higher than a family of tradesman — promised themselves to each other in a courtship that would last several years to come.
