He looked very serious. Maybe it was just the glasses though, Finley pondered as she observed the other trainee at the training ground. Really, glasses like that were bound to make anyone look serious. He did look like he might make a good sparring partner though, which was why she finally pushed off the bench and approached him with a skip in her step. "Hiya! You wouldn't happen to be on the lookout for someone to spar with, would you? Because I am," she sidled the last few steps and gave him a beaming smile.

He was very serious.
It wasn't just the glasses that made him look that way. Arguably, the glasses might have been chosen because they fit with how serious he already was.
When Finley approached him, Zachariah was staring Very Seriously at a practice dummy near him, holding his weapon forward, before swirling around and attempting to mimic moves he probably saw in a video game. It did not go as well as he liked, because while he didn't spectacularly miss, he certainly didn't hit on point either. He hmmphed and stared for a moment, looking at the practice dummy like it had suddenly developed sentience and his weapon like it had two heads.
That was before the sing-song voice entered his ears.
"What."
It wasn't even a question, really.
"Sparring?" A pause, as if pondering, before stating, "I suppose competing with a human opponent would be more useful than this."
That was probably the closest she was going to get to Sure, why not?
Zachariah wasted no time assuming a ... defensive position of sorts.

"Definitely! Learning how to handle actual opponents isn't something you can train by yourself." She paused, "I don't think it can, anyway. Maybe one could, you know, learn to psych oneself up and that might count? Either way, learning how to handle someone of a different fighting style is also very important!" And he seemed to be a spear user, much like Zascha. Except - she squinted at the other Hunter's weapon - this seemed to be more of a trident thing. "That's a right neat weapon you've got there! Like the one from the The Little Mermaid, right?" She beamed, genuinely impressed. "Such nice colours too!" For a second there she'd forgotten all about the spar that was about to place - until she saw that he'd already slipped into a defensive stance. Well. She thought it was a defensive stance, anyway; Finley wasn't all that well versed in stances yet. Shaking her head she got back on track by laying a hand on the slave bracelet that was Zayde's object form and summoning the wind and fire wheels that was her weapon form. Ah, but they still needed to decide who went first! :: He looks like he's already expecting an attack, so let's not disappoint him, hm? ::That was a good point; he did seem ready and all. "Alright then, here I go!" She swooped in, aiming to cut his side with one wheel. ___ HP: 40/40 Damage: 4 dmg Charges: 1/3

There was one thing Zachariah was quickly realizing.
This woman talked.
A lot.
Zachariah blinked once, and then again, as the Life Hunter opposite him talked about "psyching himself out" to fight a mannequin. He did not believe that would assist him at all in making fighting a mannequin better than fighting a human, considering a human had an element of unpredictability to them -- though if she kept dictating her moves, she might become more predictable than a mannequin would be ...
Zachariah kept the defensive stance, but unfortunately didn't manage to completely miss her wheels. There was a small grunt as he took the cut she made, but he didn't let it show on his face. ... Then again, not much was showing on his face.
"I suppose it is of a trident class," murmured Zachariah, thoughtfully. "I do not think comparing it to a cartoon trident is correct, though."
He decided to prove how his trident could hurt more than an actual trident by striking next, wasting no further time.

Man, this guy really wasn't very talkative, was he? His attack got her in the shoulder, making her let out a small huff as she was pushed backwards by a few steps. Alright, so he did know how to use his weapon. Point taken. He had looked a lot more clueless when attacking the dummy, earlier, but as it turned out he wasn't that bad. Which was good! There was no fun in a set fight, after all. Finley grinned, swiping at him again before putting some distance between them. Her attack had been a total miss, though. Oops. "Trident class? Isn't that the same as being an actual trident - I mean, what's the difference?" She sounded quite thoughtful, and to be truthful, really didn't get it. It was an honest question, right? _____ HP: 36/40 Damage: 0 dmg Charges: 1/3

Was she seriously asking him to explain what the difference between a trident class weapon and a trident weapon was?
"It is not exactly a trident. You yourself compared it to a spear, and then to a trident. If it is a spear and a trident, then it is not exactly a trident, nor is it exactly a spear, though I suppose it may be a polearm--"
Zachariah became so distracted with analyzing the properties of his weapon that he nearly completely missed the other life hunter when he once again attempted to stab it forward at Finley.
Oh Zachy...

The not-exactly-a-trident-and-not-exactly-a-spear only grazed her as he stabbed it forward, a neat little twirl getting her (mostly) out of harm's way. She could've probably dodged it in a less flamboyant fashion, but she really, really liked twirling. A lot, okay. "So, basically it's so non-classifiable that the only thing you can really say about it is that it's stick with multiple pointy ends?" She grinned playfully, teasing him just a bit. She'd circled slightly while talking, and now moved in to hack at his shoulder with both her wheels. Taking out an arm had proven to be a good tactic with Zascha, whose weapon was pretty similiar to - ... the guy whose name she just realised she didn't even know. "By the way, I think I might've completely forgotten to introduce myself. The name's Finley, nice to meet you!" She laughed a little at her own mistake before giving a little mock-bow in time with her introduction. ___ HP: 35/40 Damage: 6 dmg Charges: 2/3

When she called it a stick with multiple pointy ends, his eye twitched slightly.
"No, it is most definitely not a stick. That would imply it came from a tree." He had taken her tease entirely seriously, even as she managed to hit him pretty ... hard that time. There was a small gash on his side which he noted with a cool sort of indifference, before turning his attention back to the woman in front of him. Or Finley. Was she from Ireland?
She probably expected his name, now.
"Zachariah," replied Zachariah, giving her nothing else as he swiped at her while she was bowing. It was probably a low blow, but it seemed like it had done some damage.

:: You deserved that one, :: Zayde's voice was unusually snappy as Finley massaged the spot his attack gotten her at. :: Fighting is supposed to be fun, but not so much fun that you let your guard down, you twit! ::Whatever. Her weapon was just cheesed off that their opponent had gotten to the slightly dirtier tricks before they had. Speaking of which, she'd better do something before he saw her distraction as another opportunity - swiping out clumsily, she at least managed to hit him. Somewhat. Okay, it wasn't a great attack and she knew it, but it was a bit too late to turn back time and do it differently now. :: Twit. ::Really, she'd liked things a lot better before Zayde started picking up her vocabulary. ___ HP: 29/40 Damage: 1 dmg Charges: 3/3

Dirty it may have been, but it certainly seemed to have been effective. Effective was what he was going for in this case.
After all, if a monster were to be so distracted, he would definitely move to destroy it immediately and without prejudice.
Finley managed to recover a bit and get another shot at him -- that was fine, he'd live. He just needed to make sure to recover quickly and try to hit her again.
You know, Zachy, she's not a Halloween creature. You take everything so seriously.
"An analog, right now," murmured Zachariah, not having quite mastered the "mental speech" portion of being a hunter yet, as he swiped at Finley once again.
