In the dead of night, something rattled sharply against the window of Henrik's room. Axel waited a beat and threw another handful of gravel. And another.

Henrik was a heavy sleeper.

The next handful had a rock in it. With a tinkling crash, it sailed through the window and into the room.

The rock almost - almost - caught Henrik straight in the nuts. It bounced off of his thigh just a few centimeters shy. He shot up in bed with a womanly screech, clutching his chest, and glanced around wildly before realizing that he could see Axel outside the now-shattered window.
It was a wonder nobody else woke up.
"Axel," Henrik hissed, "why are you throwing rocks at me while I am sleeping?!"

Axel tried to give Henrik a meaningful look, but it was too dark to do anything but squint.
"Guy night," Axel whispered. Loudly. "We're having fun. Hurry up."
He aimed another rock menacingly.

Guy night? Henrik wasn't sure what kind of guy night they could possibly have in the middle of the barracks on base, but he was sure as hell willing to figure it out with Axel. It would be a nice break from... well, sleep, but sleep was for the weak and Henrik was definitely not weak.
Scrambling into his clothes, it only took Henrik a moment to jog quietly around the building to where Axel waited.
"Guy night? Where are we going to have fun?"

Henrik was asking way too many questions, gosh.
"Around," Axel said evasively.
Wait. Idea.
"The kitchen!"

Henrik narrowed his eyes at Axel. They were so, so narrow. And kind of beady. Like a muskrat's.
"Are there sweets? I am not hungry. Unless there are sweets. But I have not seen any sweets here. Only soup. And slop. And many, many potatoes."

Axel hadn't really had a plan when he first started chucking gravel at Henrik's window, but now he did. He totally did.
"We're going to bake a cake."

Henrik did not want to hope too much. Baking a cake sounded... pretty ******** great, but...
"Axel, it is the middle of the night. Do they even have the supplies needed to bake a cake? I have never seen a cake here, not even once."
Henrik followed after Axel, only a little reluctant.
"Are we going to be in trouble for baking a cake, Axel? I do not want to get in trouble. If I am kicked out, I have no place to go."

"Listen to what you're saying, Henrik. No one ever got in trouble for baking a cake. It's not like we're stealing." Still, Axel's voice was kept to a whisper as he tiptoed around the corners of buildings on the way to the kitchen. Happily, no one spotted them. "They've got flour and eggs for cake." Sugar was a puzzler. "You get sugar from sugar beets, right? So we can just put beets in. It'll be just like regular cake. Beet cake. Probably they'll even thank us for coming up with such a good recipe." Axel's logic was infallible.

Henrik was almost convinced that this was a great idea. He enjoyed both beets and cakes, but he'd never thought to combine them. Henrik didn't even wonder if there was a reason that nobody had ever thought to combine them, either. It'd been quite some time since he'd had cake (and the last time had been with Axel, and it hadn't ended so great).
"Well..."
There was a long pause. What if everyone did thank them for coming up with a beet cake? It would mean more cake for everyone, instead of mystery-meat stew, mystery-meat slop, and mystery-meat goop.
"I cannot argue with beet cake, Axel. Find a pan."

The door to the kitchen was held fast with a latch, but it wasn't a very sturdy one. After a moment of prying and jiggling, Axel got the door open and slipped inside the dark room. He tripped over a mop and caught himself against a counter with a whispered "******** had worked in the kitchen before, but it was disorienting to be in the kitchen in the dark. Still leaning over the counter, he blinked, waiting for his eyes to adjust.
"I think the pans are uhhh..." He straightened up, banging his head against something that clattered loudly and swung around to hit him again. "...up there. Ouch."
Now. Ingredients. "We can get the flour and beets out of the pantry," Axel said, heading over to said pantry. He had some interesting memories of that pantry, but now was not the time to reminisce. Now was the time for action. And cake baking. And beets. And friendship.
The only beets he could find were pickled. Axel grabbed the jar anyways.

"Axel," Henrik's voice was apprehensive again. "If we get in trouble in here, I am going to be very upset."
He didn't sound very convincing. Alas, the lure of cake was too strong, even if it was beet cake.
...pickled... beet... cake...
Now, Henrik knew what pickled beets tasted like. He'd even pickled his own a time or two. He could not reconcile the taste of pickled beets (vinegary, a little sweet, tangy) with cake (so sweet and so delicious and also sweet).
"Have you been drinking, Axel?"
s**t, maybe the pans to the head had scrambled his brains.
"Have you ever had pickled beets?"

"I have not been drinking," said Axel, slightly offended that Henrik was questioning his brilliant idea. He opened the jar, releasing a vinegary perfume.
"Pickled beets will be fine," he said, selecting one. "We just rinse off the pickle juice, and they'll taste fine."
He sounded like he really knew what he was doing.
