Eying the pristine grove around her with annoyance and contempt, Keshani Avenara mutely swore revenge on whatever spirit had compelled her to wander on this fine day. It may take her time to track down the source of the impulse, but she was a patient huntress. Besides, she had to lose the annoying little silver shadow she had picked up first. Because for reasons unknown, the wind colt decided she was fine company when she had not killed him in the first few moments of their meeting. He had been following her ever since, his voice high and sweet as he bubbled questions about everything.

She was drastically reconsidering the decision. But even as she longed to bare her teeth at the colt, something held her back. Some whisper of knowledge beyond instinct and conjecture. Some strange instinct cautioned against killing or even driving off the colt, but she could give no name to it. Patience lost, the Kalona-Wind mare spun about and snapped at the foal.

Hang the instinct and whatever it was trying to tell her. Enough was enough!

"What in the name of all the stars do you want, Annoying Little Shadow!?"

Delrialto SilverShadow had slipped away from his family's protective gazes in the early mist-wrapped hours of the morning. True enough his sire, grandsire and even great grandsire would disapprove... But his mother would be even more upset, she lacked the wandering hooves that moved the whole of his father's kin.

Besides, Delri was old enough to know a colt shouldn't wander alone. But at the sometime he was old enough to know that was precisely what the stallions of his family did. Had always done. While common superstition was one thing, family tradition was another. And it was tradition that sent the youngest SilverShadow Son to wandering. Because he was his Father's Son.

It was pure luck that he had crossed paths with a mare that had markings reminiscent of his own. They glimmered against her dark coat, unexpectedly softening an otherwise harsh appearance. Add that to the fact her wings were similar as well -thought twilight glimmered captive upon each feather- and he couldn't not follow her.

He wasn't entirely foolish, spooking out of reach when she turned on him. But once out of range of teeth, tail and hooves he halted again. "That isn't how you make a proper introduction, you know..."

He considered her with a bewildered tilt of his head.
PostPosted: Sat Aug 23, 2014 3:01 pm

"It is enough of an introduction if she doesn't rip your throat out, little sparrow." Avant stepped out into the grove, tilting his head and studying the little colt that had followed his sister. It was a dangerous thing to do, really, even Avant rarely did it. Only today there had been something in the air, drawing him to his sister's side. And after their earlier meetings, he hadn't been certain about ignoring the impulse. Now, he was sure it was a harmless thing.

The little sparrow would just annoy her until she decided to kill him. Still. There was something familiar about him. It wasn't in the markings that were admittedly beautiful, but in the silver and blue coloring the foal bore. Avant had to wonder if he was related to the annoying silver and and blood spattered stallion and his familiar that had helped him out of those vines. Shaking his head, he dismissed the thought. Even if it was possible, he wasn't the one he was supposed to save, come the time. There was still something about the little sparrow though...

Avant circled a bit closer, cutting between his sister and the foal, looking down at him and his wings. Well, at least he had an idea why the foal had followed his sister, then. The wind tended to do that. Birds of a feather and all that. "Sister." He nuzzled along her neck for a second before turning his attention back to the colt.

"If you want a proper introduction, you should give one, first." Avant bared his fangs in something that could be mistaken for a smile. "I do like to know the name of what I eat."

Keshani just needed a two minute start and she could get well out of the foal's range. Just two minutes to find some upon air to launch herself into, so she could climb into the blue away from the little wind-winged brat. Otherwise she truly would kill him. Would sink fangs into his flesh and snap his neck, would trample him into the leaves and grass beneath her hooves. It had been a long time since she had been unable to kill that which annoyed her; not since her foalhood had she been so limited. But for some reason she couldn't end this colt... And it deeply vexed her.

Though the sudden appearance of her brother gave her hope. After all, Avant was rarely prone to limitations of any kind. The Kalona stallion was all towering strength and dark humor, and they were close. And while she could usually say she and her brother were the same, today was a particularly odd occasion. Maybe her brother would be glad to aid her, and destroy the upstart little thing.

"You speak the truth, Dearest Brother." She murmured, giving him a fanged smile as she returned the greeting nuzzle.
PostPosted: Sat Aug 23, 2014 3:59 pm

'So much for making friends...' The colt thought to himself as he watched the mare flash fang. 'Don't they know that the saying is 'meet new Soquili' and not 'eat new Soquili'??'

Delrialto skittered a stride or two sideways at the sudden appearance of the stallion, laying an ear back and turning dusk-blue eyes toward the greater threat. He couldn't quite figure out why his appearance annoyed the mare so, considering they had matching wings and similar markings. Didn't she find that was curious, like he did? Why didn't she understand?

Maybe you stopped wondering about things when you grew up. He hadn't seen that trait in his family, yet... But they were wanderers born. Still, it was possible, right? And if that was the case, Delri didn't really want to grow up. He was happy exploring and wandering, chasing down knowledge and building a map of the land in his mind. One day he would be able to fly overhead, to view it all from the air.. But until then, he'd get used to making the journey on his own four feet, and see what there was to see.

Assuming, of course, that he lived through today.

"You didn't introduce yourself either." Delrialto pointed out with a tilt of his head as he considered the night-dark stallion. The glitter of blood red markings on the stallion intrigued him, but he refused to move closer. After all the stallion already had said he wanted to eat Delri, and he had far too many plans for the days following today to allow it.

Pacing a short line back and forth, he stopped and considered the pair again. With a snort and a stomp of one emphatic hoof, he drew himself up to his height (meager though it was). "My name is Delrialto Silvershadow. I am the son of Ashrialto, the blood-dappled Knight; son of Imrikalto, the Native-Born Shadow; Son of Sibalto, the Silver Wanderer from Across the Bitter Water."

Pride a bright light in his eyes, he gazed up at the pair in challenge. "So then.. Who are you?"

"Don't I always speak the truth, big sister?" Avant laughed softly under his breath, because that was as big a lie as anything else. He told the truth when it suited him, and no other time.

"I didn't want to." He replied to the colt, tilting his head to the side and studying him, really concerned with the fact that the colt resembled that annoying stallion he'd had to rely on to save him some time back. "You are the one who wants to know who we are. So it is proper if you introduce yourself first."

Avant really had no intention of eating the little thing. Eating foals was always too much of a hassle, with the relations and the endless fighting and all that. They were much more fun to scare, or convert. But this one was bothering his sister, so he wanted to scare the little foal. Maybe bloody him a little so he would learn to guard himself a bit better.

He was impressed, however, that the colt was staying just out of range. Obviously there was some intelligence in the little thing. Either that, or he was recognizing them as Kalona, and wanted to keep his head. So to speak.

The childlike stomp made him grin, but it fell off his face and he hissed at the mention of Imrikalto. Well, at least he had a name of the blue stallion he was supposed to... protect in some way. "Delrialto." He rolled the name around in his mouth, trying to make sure he would remember it. It might be important at some point, especially if he had to deal with the colt's father. He still owed that debt. He hated owing anyone anything. It was especially bad considering the fox that he had promised in the first place. "Of the Silvershadow line. Hmm."

Avant wandered a few steps forward, toward him but not threateningly. More curious now. "I know your grandsire. Well, know is probably the wrong word, but we have run across each other. I owe that fox a debt. I have to protect your father from something. A wandering knight. With foals, no less." He wasn't really sure why he was telling the colt this, but he felt like he should, that it would inspire some sort of trust in the little sparrow.

"I am Avant Resari Faythren. I'll leave my linage up to your imagination, little sparrow." He looked down at the colt, caught up in his eyes.

In spite of how the little colt annoyed her, Keshani couldn't help but smile in wry amusement at her brother. Perhaps that was intent, since he was calling her 'Big Sister' again... He usually did that when he wanted to inspire a grin or lighten her heart, if only a little. And for all that they were dark-natured, her brother could inspire her to something significantly lighter of heart than her normal state.

"If you like, Dearest Brother." Keshani murmured, offering what seemed like agreement (to an untrained ear) rather than arguing. After all, there was truth to her words. Avant offered truth when he felt like it, when it would gain him something or would serve him best in his chosen end game.

The fact that he was so mildly disposed toward the colt was, interesting. On the one hand, it made her wonder if her temper had gotten away from her for an entirely different reason... On the other, she wondered if perhaps Avant had a specific endgame in mind.... One now apparently featuring the colt they had so happened to cross paths with. How interesting.

She honestly had expected something other than 'introduce yourself first'. Though she wasn't entirely sure what the 'something else' was. Silently Keshani glanced to her brother and then the colt again. The youth was cautious, she had to admit. He moved freely, refusing to get too close to them or to the encroaching brush. His motion was fluid, muscles loose and therefore unlikely to seize up if he had to bolt from them. He couldn't fly yet, but he no-doubt knew little hidey-holes in the woods where he could evade them.

The colt was a clever one, for all he annoyed the feathers off of her. But the fact he amused her brother and inspired him to socialize was all the more intriguing. She didn't ask why the line was familiar to him, instead allowing herself to slip into the background and observe without comment.

Though the remarks about Avant owing a fox a debt was interesting. Her ears swiveled forward curiously, head tilting in silent question. 'What have you gotten yourself into, Dearest Brother?'

'Sister?' Delrialto echoed wordlessly, glancing between the two. Well, that made a certain kind of sense he supposed. The pair were similar enough, but the fact that there were two of them and one of him was somewhat worrisome. Siblings could hunt like a pack, and he was the only prey in sight at the moment.

Worrisome indeed.

I didn't want to. He almost smiled at the stallion's comment. What did one say to that? It was probably a bad sign that he found a Kalona entertaining, but there at least was no outward sign of it.

Delri considered the stallion in return, tilting his head faintly and flicking his tail. He had the sense he was being evaluated, in a way... As though the stallion were attempting to determine if he was worth the trouble. Perhaps the stranger was considering if it would be more entertaining to keep him alive, or if it would be more fun to chase him and kill him at the end of a hunt.

Then again, there was something about those red eyes. Searching, as if Delrialto was somehow familiar to him. And that in itself was worrisome. Which was interesting, on many fronts. After all, that meant the Kalona had crossed paths with one of his kin. And while Delri didn't know which one, he'd surely find out.

"Yes." He murmured softly, ears swiveling forward at the sound of his name. He remained loosely poised to flee, shifting on his hooves to keep his muscles loose. He remembered his training, and staying relaxed enough to move when the situation called for it was key.

He certainly didn't want to get caught because he acted like a dumb rabbit and got mesmerized by the stare of a predator. So instead the colt shook himself from nose to tail and replied stoutly. "Yes, Fourth Generation."

He didn't precisely retreat, but he flowed sideways in a naturally gliding motion that carried him away even as the stallion approached. There was something intriguing about the stallion, but Delri didn't want to get close enough to figure out what that was. Close enough to figure that out was close enough to get eaten. Too close.

Grandsire?

Delrialto froze at that, mist-blue eyes wide as he stared up at the Kalona. How... Was that even possible? Imrikalto was not the type to consort with Kalona. Even if the mare had wings like a wind, she was still clearly a Kalona. Still obviously dangerous. "You... You know my grandsire?"

Well then, part of the mystery solved. At least he knew which family member the Kalona had met. That certainly made sense, considering the strange look the stallion had given him. Delri was more likely to be recognized as being related to his grandsire or great-grandsire; he supposed. For while his sister was a blend of their parents, he strongly favored his mother.

"Akaria." He replied absently. "The fox's name is Akaria."

He tilted his head, considering the words for a moment. He dearly loved time spent with the fox that was his grandfather's familiar. She was a true friend, as well as a babysitter and keeper of excellent stories... In fact, Akaria had told him a bed-time story something similar... What was it?

"Grandsire and Akaria found you caught in razor vines." The colt echoed, softly. "She... She made you promise that if ever you saw my father in danger, you would offer your assistance."

He narrowed his eyes in consideration, noting the stallion's markings with a tilt of his head and a faint smile. "You're the son of the Dark Fayth, Foundation of the Faythren-Noire line..."

He snapped his tail, chin lifting slightly as he gave the kalona a smile. "Hmm... I was told to steer clear of the sons, and daughters of Aveshar."

Avant cast his sister a wry smile, noting her non-agreement with amusement. He also noted her disappearing to watch without comment. If she wanted to be rid of the foal, he would gladly pick up the game. He was rather interesting, even if Avant couldn't place why. It was just something about the way the colt kept himself loose and ready to run, but was standing his ground.

And so familiar, but Avant hadn't placed it yet. The markings were beautiful and distracting him from the coat color and the air of caution that had him fooled for the moment.

It wasn't often that he crossed paths with a wind, at least one that wasn't his sister. And, while the colt couldn't fly, he was probably fast on his feet and might escape him, even if Avant did try to catch him.

Avant raised an eyebrow at him, and this son of the son of Imrikalto. "Four generations of you running around, pretending to be knights. My word, what a world to live in." Avant circled around him then, keeping his distance, rather than pursue the colt. He had just become fascinating, after all. And a link to purging the stupid debt he owed to... Ashrialto. That was the name.

He watched the colt freeze, skiddish to the last, so Avant stopped too, mirroring his position. "Yes, though 'know' is probably the wrong word for it. We are aware of each other, let's put it that way, shall we?"

Avant snorted, choking back a laugh. "Yes, it most certainly is. And I'm sure she would hate to think I had forgotten it." He hadn't, of course. It wasn't something like was likely to forget, ever. The experience had been humiliating, and that was a thing he could never forget.

He didn't show his surprise that that colt knew the story. He should't have been surprised in the first place, considering they all ran around helping Soquili. They probably told tales to their young ones all the time, and helping a Kalona get out of a tangle must make for a great bedtime story. "Yes, that is what she did."

Avant was agreeing to a lot of things he said, apparently.

Again he had to hide his surprise that the colt knew of him and his line. "Again, I have to agree with you. And whoever told you you should stay away was probably right." He advanced quickly, towering over the colt for a moment before he was struck dumb by that smile. "But I would rather you didn't." He confessed softly, close enough that the whisper would only be heard by the colt, not his sister. "I mean," He cleared his throat. "how else will I repay the fox's debt?"

It was a lame excuse for suddenly wanting to know more about the smug little foal. But his mind was still rebooting from that little smile the colt had. It was, dare he think it, cute.

Keshani shook her head faintly at Avant, flicking an ear and tucking away her amusement behind a disapproving click and another glare at the colt. If Avant wanted to take the little thing under his wing -what was it with her brother adopting obnoxious colts, anyway?- then he was welcome to it. But as she had refused to deal with the little Kalona-mix, she had no desire to spend time around this nuisance.

"We all know that you will do as you like regardless." She mused softly, drifting a few strides away as she circled the seen with idle interest.

Glancing to the colt, she laughed. "Four generations? And the other three are not careful enough to keep you safe in the heart of the herd? I think we should just kill you and drop your carcass at their feet... A warning to keep their future generations closer."

She shrugged idly, then lapsed into silence. Avant would do as he willed, and likely he would save the colt. After all, once the foal was dead his ability to amuse was ended... And Avant did always like a long-standing game.

'So.. Dying seems like a thing that might actually be happening...' Delrialto murmured to himself as he skirted sideways enough to keep them both in his view. The mare's restless pacing and her advocating his death made him nervous, but he still didn't want to go just yet... Was too intrigued to do the safe thing and leave, just yet.

So he shifted and paced, trying to remain relaxed and keep them in his sights as he worked to sort things out. If he could find an opening, maybe he would take it... But he rather like the idea of walking out of here without being under threat, rather than running like a hunted thing.

"You are aware then, as you like. And we are not pretending." He argued softly, with a stubborn lift of his chin. Because they weren't! His family were knights, and he wouldn't cry and demand recognition like a child... He could argue in an adult manner. "But if you've only known one of us, and that one is the one that saved you... I gather you are aware that we keep our word."

He gave the Kalona a challenging look. "I rather doubt you would forget what you had sworn to Akaria. If you had, I imagine you would be treated with the rather unsettling experience of her appearing in the night to remind you."

Delri was willing to bet that if these strange siblings did try anything, the star-patterned she-fox would find out... And she'd appear to make their lives difficult, and teach them the error of their ways. Not that he would warn the strangers of that, it did no good to give away one's advantage. Besides, if Avant was clever he would figure it out himself... He had met the she-fox he should know.

The thought made him grin as did the fact that the Kalona stallion kept agreeing with him. He wasn't sure why a Kalona would stand there and talk with him rather than trying to trample him flat or kill or eat him like the mare kept suggesting... It was not at all like he had expected a Kalona to act, but he couldn't make himself leave just yet. Not when they might do something else interesting or unexpected. He was content to learn from any who would teach him, which at the moment seemed to be these two siblings.

Unexpected teachers, but wisdom and survival tricks could be found and unusual places. And if he wanted to learn how to survive a Kalona, who better to teach him? Not that he would propose such a thing, but he could learn by interaction and that would be enough for the moment.

He frowned at the stallion's words, tilting his head and murmuring. "Your oath was to assist my father, not me... Are you sure you wish to repay the debt this way?"

Avant glanced over at his sister for a moment, pondering her that. While it was true that if they roughed the colt up a bit and left him for his family to find, they would all probably be a bit more careful in their wanderings. The thought didn't really appeal, however. Not only would it make fulfilling his debt nigh impossible, because Ashrialto would never let Avant near him, it would also mean never seeing the little sparrow again. Whether they killed him or not, Delrialto would be protected, and that would make it all the harder for Avant to get to him. While he enjoyed the challenge, he didn't want to make it impossible for him to see the colt again. Now he wasn't sure exactly why he wanted to be sure of another interaction, but he'd learned to trust his instincts.

"Now, now sister mine, I think perhaps we can get more out of this little foal than just a carcass and a warning." Avant smiled at her. "Besides, when did we start giving our opponents warnings, hmm?"

Avant watched the young one keep himself loose and ready, just in case, but Avant was thrilled he hadn't taken wing quite yet. This was the most fun he'd had in ages, and he wasn't willing to let it go quite yet.

"Oh, I know your type to keep your word, even when it didn't benefit you at all." He smiled lazily. "But that didn't make you a knight." Avant continued the argument without any real passion for it. They could call themselves whatever they liked. It didn't matter to him any more than the fact was that they could possibly be knights. "I hear there are actual ceremonies and rites before you can actually claim that title." He regarded the colt with amusement. "Have you undergone these rites?"

Avant baked a startled laugh. "Yes, that fool fox would probably do just that if I did forget. Such an amusing thought. I think it would be a toss-up as to who would end up worse off in that scenario." He trained off into a chuckle, sharing his head. White braids bounced off his neck as he twitched his tail back and forth. He had no doubt that the fix would make an effort to remind him in whatever way it saw fit. And if it was lucky, Avant wouldn't eat it the next time he saw it. Once his oath was fulfilled, though, the fox was fair game.

"Oh, no, I'm not going to assist you, really. It's not about that. Do you honestly think that I would be able to fulfill my oath if I harmed you, or allowed you to come to harm?" Avant laughed darkly. "No, little sparrow, the fox was rather smart. Your father would not forgive something happening to you, and then where would I be? Stuck with an oath I couldn't complete." Avant moved closer to him with a soft sort of smile. "So, I suppose, I have to... take care of you while you are within my sight and I am honor bound to that fox. How lucky for you."

In the quiet solitude of her own mind, Keshani Avenara admitted she had little to no interest in spending time with foals. Perhaps one day she would change her mind, would long for a small piece of living proof that she was loved so deeply by another. At the moment, she had no such prospects in mind, and therefore no desire to be around the tiny little bodies.

Then again, that might be the cheerful nature of the little colt in question. The fact that Avant was (or seemed to be) so fond of him did not help his case. But then again, he probably had little desire to be on the 'good side' of a Kalona cross mare. As long as she didn't eat him, she imagined the colt was happy to let the two adults continue their conversation as long as they liked.

More than a carcass and a warning? Perhaps he had a long con in mind?

She rather doubted it, but she gave Avant a smirk and a shrug. "Sometimes it is fun to watch them flail and wail and run about after a warning has been deposited at their feet. After all, then they live in fear of when we will next strike. I find it most entertaining."

She narrowed her eyes as she watched Avant watch the colt, shaking her head. There was no rational here, at least none that she could see... But she and Avant frequently indulged in dramatic chess-moves whenever they had the opportunity. This was clearly becoming one of his.

"Brother, I find myself restless and hungry... Can I leave you to your games with the youngling? I would hate for his herd to appear in force and damage you."

Delrialto narrowed his eyes and watched as the brother and sister exchanged looks. Exchanged looks while they argued about whether or not to kill him, to eat him, to beat him and leave him for his herd to find. He pinned an ear just to show his disapproval of the whole matter, but otherwise remained quiet. He didn't want to draw more attention to himself than necessary, truth be told.

If all else failed, he would try to fly away. He'd been practicing enough that he could manage short, quick flights. Perhaps enough to get away and hide, since he was smaller and a bit more agile than the adults. He could also take off and land in much smaller areas than they... There was a thorn tangle nearby that could hide him, if he could make it...

"Of course we keep our word, it is the honorable thing to do." He argued with soft stubbornness, a scowl creeping over his face. He lifted his head proudly, mirth glinting in his eyes. "I have gone through some of the early rites, as those are open to me in my youth. There are others that must wait until I am fully grown, but I am still a Knight."

A Knight-in-Training if one wanted to split hairs, which it appeared this Kalona stallion did. But Delri wouldn't let anyone take away his pride in upholding family tradition. Maybe he'd tell Akaria about all of this, when he finally made his way home, and see what the she-fox could make of it. She was clever, far more clever than his father or grandfather if anyone asked her. The thought made Delri grin, though he fought down the amusement in the next moment.

"It appears you are assisting me, arguing on my behalf against your own sister." Delri pointed out. "And while you would not be obeying the spirit of the vow if you harmed me or allowed me to come to harm, you would be obeying the word of the oath. You promised to offer my sire aid, were he in trouble. You have yet to meet him."

He wind colt shrugged. "I have met many that would obey the word of the oath over the spirit. I am sure Akaria has as well..."

He wouldn't continue the argument beyond that, or the next thing he knew he'd probably be trying to goad the Kalona into attacking him. Which would not be the most intelligent thing you've ever done.

He sighed as the stallion moved closer, and skirted a step back. "Or you could let me go home, out of your sight, and therefore out of mind?"

He couldn't help the hopeful little lilt to his tone at the end of the question. A 'please' without asking. Not that he thought it would be successful.
