Azzo had walked around the camp a little lost, he was glad that Snowball and Merlin continued to followed him obediently. "Lord everything looks the same. I think I would've rather been stuck out in the snow in Alaska." He sighed as he continued to walk around before finally sighing and dropping down on a stump. "Okay I give up. . . I'm getting too old for this."Snowball's ears twitched him and Merlin followed Azzo until he sat down and said he gave up. "Oh come on. You're walking around like a normal human." The cat grumbled.
"And you are not old. Seriously, I didn't know being in a war would make you soft. I bet you're old man is pretty disappointed in you." Snowball seemed to have pushed a button because he gained a glare from the knight. Snowball hadn't seem him power up since they got back. "I think you lost your edge."
Merlin whined a little at the pair bickering.

Laney had been on her feet for about the last eighteen hours, which she hadn't expected. Guard duty always ran long, like it was planned to -- but afterwards, they'd been short handed on an emergency at the field hospital, some kind of mission gone sour, and she'd had to scrub in to help out, even with her minimal qualifications for work like that. They might've mentioned what the mission was that'd gone foul, she realized -- but she was too tired to remember it at the moment. Right now, all she wanted was to brush the knots out of her hair and curl up in bed until someone came to wake her for her next shift of... whatever it was she was supposed to be doing in the next few hours. Laney ran tired fingers through her hair as she walked, trying to detangle it, her fingers getting caught on her surgical mask -- good lord, she was still wearing it. Distracted as she was, fingers caught in a snarl of hair, she didn't notice herself walking into another person along the little dirt footpath. Post-collision, she blinked, looking up with her hands already waving in apology -- but it was -- Azzo?

The bickering had caused them all to miss the girl walking up but when she almost crashed into them Azzo looked up and suddenly jumped up to his feet.
It was Laney! Though she was waving, "Laney?" He asked before moving to wrap his arms around her. "Laney! Oh it's so good to see someone I know." He pulled away from her after a second, "How've you been doing?" Obviously he wasn't aware of her condition.Snowball's fur had fluffed up when he noticed they had almost been crashed into and he gave a pathetic little hiss-hiss-hiss. He stopped when Azzo recognized the woman though, fur still fluffed out. ". . . Laney is. . . ?"
Merlin however had a much happier reaction from the cat's unhappy reaction and knocked snowball off in attempts to greet the new person! Sniffing at her and trying to lick her hand when it was in reach. Because anyone Azzo knew was okay with him.

How long had it been since she'd seen Azzo Crowley? Years? It had to have been years -- and she'd worried, in that time, thinking of him on occasion, wondering if he was alive or doing alright. But he hadn't been here when they'd brought her in bleeding and unconscious, slack-jawed -- when Sailor Oenone had had to sew her face together. He didn't -- he didn't know. Laney could feel the blood drain from her face, still half-hidden by the surgical mask, as he hugged her. She stood there stiffly. Normally, she would've had an enthusiastic hug for a friend she hadn't seen in so long -- but it had been a long time since she'd had to deal with this bit. To tell someone who didn't know, as he obviously didn't, what had happened. The dog that was licking her hand distracted her momentarily -- she looked downward, reflexively petting it on its head to try and soothe its excitement. Her eyes stung a little. She was tired, she supposed. With resignation, she reached into her back pocket to pull out the little paper notepad she kept on her person in her non-powered form. Laney flipped open to the first page and held it up for Azzo to see, looking away in embarrassment. I am mute, but I can hear, the little piece of paper read in worn black marker. I can write things down to speak to you.

Azzo hadn't expected her to pull out paper. He'd waved Snowball off and made Merlin sit after the dog had gotten his pettings in. ". . . Laney what happened?" He looked concerned, her surgical mask was keeping him from seeing what marred her face.
In the time he'd been gone he'd never expected things to have gotten this bad and Laney not speaking? Things were getting worse but he certainly couldn't do anything without fully understanding the whole situation Finn had mentioned the shadows but from the sound of that he wasn't pleased with the idea.Snowball watched the little note pad being pulled out and then jumped to Azzo's shoulders and perched himself there. "Does a Cats have her tongue?"
His tail flickered as he watched the girl who was standing there and Merlin just wanted to play. Which would've been fine had there not been more serious matters. Snowball earned a stern glare from Azzo not finding that funny in an sense.

Laney blinked several times, trying unsuccessfully to wish away tears that were threatening to spill over her face. The cat's question made all the blood return to her face in an embarrassed red flush. She turned to a fresh page, pulling the little golf pencil out of her pocket to write, A General-King named Labyrinthite has it.She held up this new message for them to read. While they did, Laney used her free hand to tug the surgical mask down from her face to show the horridly wrought, parodied grin of a Glasgow smile that was scarred there.

Azzo gave Snowball a glare that made the cat slink off his shoulder. However he turned in time to read her message and his eyes shifted from her to the cat and back to the paper. "I think me and him are going to need a little talk."
His arms crossed very unhappy with the idea of Laney actually losing her tongue and when she pulled the mask down he stopped and frowned. Whoever this Labyrithite was had gone too far. "I can't get your tongue back but I'm going to find this Labyrithite and show him what I think of him when I actually have a plan. No one takes my friend's tongues without losing their own."Snowball looked ashamed as he slunk off the man's shoulder and moved down to wrap around Laney's legs he didn't mean any offense, instead he stuck all four paws and his tail in his mouth. "I'm Sorry." He said looking up at her from around her legs.

The idea of anyone she cared about squaring off against Labyrinthite made Laney's skin crawl. She shook her head emphatically, trying to picture a knight with a blunt weapon squaring off against a scythe-baring General-King. She didn't want to think about Labyrinthite ever. Let him be relegated to nightmares, where he belonged, and stay out of her life otherwise. Let him die without her ever even hearing about it. That'd be better. He's dangerous, she wrote. I don't need avenging. Let him use his energies elsewhere. She knelt to pet the guardian cat who'd put all his feet in his mouth, offering forgiveness via a gentle hand. What had Azzo been up to, actually? Where had he been directing his energies? How long have you been in camp? she scribbled down. Then, underlined and with a trail of needless punctuation, Where have you been all this time??????????

Niflhel sighed, "You're right, He's above my grade. Polaris isn't here so I'll leave him be."
He paused watching her pet snowball, "Snowball's usually pretty decent, sometimes he lacks a little tact."
He paused, "I just got here, Finn dropped me off." He answered, "I've uh. . . Well After me and Aurora got married we went to Alaska to see her folks. We ended up caught up in some of the issues that are happening outside of DC and in turn. . . " He paused thinking of how to phrase it. "Well she's not here anymore. . ."
"I decided to come back to the city to see what was happening because it's been getting a lot of attention."Snowball watched Azzo with concern as he spoke about what he'd been doing. "He said something happened to Polaris, that she's not with us anymore. . ." His ears flattened down a little bit. He still felt that there was something off about that statement.

Laney frowned, watching Azzo closely as he answered her questions. He was covering a span of years in very vague terms, and she wondered what there was not to be said. Had Princess Polaris been corrupted, rather than killed like he was implying? Would Azzo hold something like that back? She didn't know. But Azzo was a good person, a friend, and she'd known him since the beginning of things. Since the empty hole in her head where Barren Pines had been carved away. She'd go on trusting him as long as she needed to. I'm sorry about Aurora, she wrote down. People here will be glad to have you, though. Never enough hands on deck. How long can you stay? Permanently?

Azzo looked at the paper and nodded, "I'm staying as long as it takes. Then I don't know what I'll do." Actually he hadn't really planned on what he was doing beyond making sure people thought Polaris was dead, in that instance he pulled out her henshin pen and sighed rolling it between his fingers.
"I haven't really thought that far a head to be honest with you Laney." He paused, "What about you Laney, what have you been up to besides the unfortunate circumstances?"Snowball's fur ruffled, "Azzo don't play with her pen like that. We're out in the open."
Granted. . . . if she was dead then there'd be no need to worry however, still. It bothered the mauvian that the knight was playing with his senshi's pen like it was a toy. Or maybe a little more like a cherished wedding ring which he'd noticed Azzo was still wearing as well. "If you're going to fiddle and play with something at least play with your wedding ring like a normal person geeze." He sat down and sighed.

Laney shared the Mauvian's concern as Azzo fiddled with the henshin pen -- if nothing else, a knight carelessly fiddling with a senshi's henshin pen was a memento mori -- a reminder that someone had died and didn't need their pen anymore; a reminder that any one of them could die, too. She was grateful when Snowball said something -- it meant she didn't have to. Good you're staying, she wrote tersely. Always work to do here. She held that up while he asked his next question, then appended her note with: Sometimes on Guard. Sometimes helping @ field hospital. Came from there, on way to bed. Then, with slightly less clipped sentences to make sure it came out clearly enough, Do you know where the group barracks tent is? Extra beds there for new arrivals. I can take you there.

Azzo stopped and looked at Snowball and then to Laney. "Huh, oh sorry." He sighed and put it up, there was concern as looked up to read what she was saying. He nodded, "When was there ever not though Laney? It's just gotten rougher it seems."
He nodded when she wrote on Gaurd and helping in the field hospital. "Oh, I didn't mean to keep you form bed." He said pausing when she wrote another message.
He paused, "No I don't actually, I was just kind of wandering around. If you want to sleep though don't let me keep you."Snowball's tail twitched as he watched Azzo, "I'm not sure he wants to be stuck around others at the moment."
He moved, "When Finn mentioned that they might want him for the Shadows it seemed to spook him." He paused as he jump up and onto Hver shoulder to whisper into her ear. "Which as I'm sure you know from the old Azzo, is totally not him." Though the cat kept his balance there and nuzzled a little into the side of her face for a second.
"Something's made him go a little squirrelly."

Laney was exhausted after such a long day, but Snowball's words were alarming: alarming enough that she bit back her powerful sense of revulsion about having someone unfamiliar so close to her face without permission, letting it show only as a hideous, twitchy grimace. She waited until Snowball had settled down, then pulled the medical mask up over her mouth to make herself unconsciously feel a little safer. She shook her head in disapproval at the news about what Finn had said about the Shadows. It's a difficult job, she wrote down. Not something people would pressure someone into doing if they weren't OK with it. That's a recipe for problems.Laney looked at Azzo, though, for a long moment, trying to read his face. 'Something's made him go a little squirrelly.' When she took up writing again, it was clear she was asking about whatever she saw there and didn't understand. Do you want to talk about it?

Snowball paused realizing he'd caused Laney Discomfort. "Sorry." He said sheepishly as he jumped down and settled beside her looking up towards her face. He'd noticed her adjust her mask. "I'm use to being able to just perch on Azzo's shoulder whenever."
He looked around after he noticed she'd written a question on if he wanted to talk about it. "Hey me and Merlin are going to see if we can hunt down something to eat. Maybe rabbit?" Snowball moved to nudge the dog. "I hope you can get him to talk more than I have." Snowball said looking at Laney as he and the dog trotted off into the woods. "We'll catch up with you later Azzo."Azzo's brow lofted as Snowball jumped up to Laney's shoulder and whispered in her ear. The fact she shifted in mood to such an uncomfortable disposition made him worry. Though he watched more concerned as the cat and dog wondered off to look for rabbits. He sighed, "Laney, can I see you face?" He asked for the moment brushing off her question and comment that it was a difficult job. "I - I'd like to see what they did to you. I'm sure it's difficult for even you."
He seemed to be willing to share, "Also, is there someplace a little less. . . open to talk? I don't really want anything to be over heard by anyone."
