It was with a renewed sense of purpose that Nazca of Mercury resumed his nightly searches. Not that he'd ever stopped, really, but now he had more of an idea of what he was looking for. And, he felt, of what the stakes were. He would not go blundering around and get beat up by yet another teenage girl, not when he had much more important things to focus on.

He couldn't stop himself from looking for Tara though, regardless of where she was supposed to be. His real mission was to find one of her friends, but that was just a means to an end. So he found himself looking for her. Or for the girl in the star-covered cape, who he still had a hard time seeing as his little sister, but he'd suspected it, and Laney had all but confirmed it. Even if she wasn't there to be found, he had to try.

So far, he'd been unsuccessful in finding her or a friend who could help, possibly because he didn't know where his priorities were. Frustrated, he checked his wrist, and was irritated again, since his watch wasn't on it. It was probably time to check Aludra's lightpost, though. He went by more nights than he didn't, and even though so far there hadn't been anything of note there, the chance that there would be was enough to keep him from quitting.

Nazca sighed and started off in that direction, keeping his eyes peeled for anything unusual. "Right," he muttered to himself, "like I'm not the most unusual thing here."

“Not really,” Zippeite was such a creeper. He had spotted the Mercury page and decided that the obvious answer was to lurk. He wasn’t sure what he was out to prove tonight but a target at a lower level than him and a burning desire to crush something in the wake of his own failings was strong.

Nazca looked like an easy target and was unfortunate enough to be spotted.

Zippeite's weapon was sheathed at his back, the sling that held the weighted staff went across his chest and he walked with his hands out as if he was harmless.

But violence was on his mind tonight regardless of appearances.

"What are you looking for?"

That was startling. Nazca wasn't sure which was more disturbing- the fact that someone had snuck up on him (again), or the possibility that there were still more weird things out there that he had yet to learn about.

The source of the voice was easy enough to spot, walking towards him with his arms held out. That was promising. It was also at odds with the jangling vibration in his head, which reminded him of the girl with the Ouija board in a way. But that was probably a stress headache, he decided, and stopped focusing on it, instead turning his attention to the person in front of him.

A teenager. Of course.

"I'm looking for a person. Or a group of people. Something about a Zodiac. Do you know where I might find them?" This was the first time Nazca had really been able to ask someone upfront, without dealing with an attack for his troubles. That, he figured, was a good sign.

"Ah, the Zodiac soldiers," Zippeite said sagely, pulling phrases out of an old briefing he couldn't claim to really remember.

"They're special kind of senshi I think, from the Surrounding, like that one over there," And he pointed on glowing glove at the empty space just beyond Nazca. He waited half a second to see if the page was dumb enough to look and in a quick and planned motion, grabbed his staff and aimed to whack him on the back of the head. Not hard enough to crush his cranium or making him lose consciousness or anything, just knock him over.

Zippeite was an a*****e.

"Wait, seriously?" Someone had heard of them? There was one nearby? Nazca was too excited at the possibility of having found what he was looking for to pause for even one moment. He turned in the direction the other guy was pointing in, frowning a little when he couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. "I don't see-"

There was a cracking sound as a heavy implement hit the back of his head, followed by a sharp pain that seemed to drown everything else out for a moment. His vision swam, his head throbbed, and the only thing that kept him from crying out was the fact that the knock to the noggin made him bite his tongue.

"What the hell?" he shouted instead, stumbling back around. It was mostly a rhetorical question. Getting attacked by random teenagers twice might have been coincidence. Three times was a pattern. Was there a "hit me" sign on the back of his jacket that he'd missed?

His sight wasn't clearing up as fast as he would have liked. The best Nazca could do was put his arms in a defensive position in front of him and hope he was facing the right direction.

"Yup, that's right, you're in hell," Zippeite preened at his success and spun the staff around in a showy shift to a new position before firmly snapping himself to another offensive stance.

"You woke up on the wrong side I guess, you poor dumb ******** took a few steps back before he shot off in a running start, intending to hit with a much more damaging blow this time around.

Even though this was a disaster, and he was probably about to get walloped, Nazca couldn't help but snort. "Is that supposed to make you the devil? You're missing your horns." Though he was just as happy this kid had a staff instead of a pitchfork. At least he wouldn't end up skewered. Possibly.

The spots finally started to fade, but not enough for him to put up a good defense. "If the right side is one that assaults random passerby, I think I'm happier on the wrong one," he said, mostly in a desperate attempt to stall. If he could just have a few more moments-

But the taunting voice had stopped, and all Nazca could hear was the pounding of feet against pavement. With few other options, he took off running himself, in what he could only pray was a totally different direction.

Preachier and more experienced order aligned individuals had tried to express these things to Zippy before and he was thankful he didn't seem to be outmatched in debate when it came to Nazca.

Instead this felt less like a conversation and more like total annihilation on easy mode, even if his staff swung at empty space because poor Nazca had started running.

"Eh, that's okay, you won't be around long enough to realize that's a dumb decision," Zippeite said with a laugh, taking actual enjoyment in the chase.

He ran after him, even giving a playful 'whoop' before he slammed the end of his staff into the concrete and used it like a pole vault, aiming to land his boots into the back of the page.

What kind of world was this, where the bad guys got real weapons and the heroes got squat? Even if he pulled his book out of whatever hidden pocket it was stored in, Nazca knew that it wouldn't be able to defend him against whatever had hit him on the head. This guy wanted to hurt him, and he was quite successful so far.

But it wasn't until he spoke again that Nazca realized a little injury was the least of his worries. If he let this kid have his way, he'd wind up dead. The crazy girl he'd met had wanted that too, for reasons he still couldn't quite figure out other than that everyone was nuts. Not that they needed a good reason for killing him to be successful at it.

If he died, he'd never find Tara. Never bring her back. Never make amends for the mistakes he'd made.

He turned abruptly, and was both thrilled and horrified to be able to see a shadow darting towards him. This guy was persistent! But at least he could see the general movements and direction now, and that allowed him to scramble out of the way, though doing so knocked him off balance and he wound up on his a** anyway.

"I've got more important things to worry about than you," he informed his would-be murderer, getting to his feet again. "If you thought about it, you'd probably find more important things to worry about yourself, but if you can't find them, it's not my problem."

Zippeite tumbled when his feet didn't make contact, but he recovered quickly, whipping his staff around behind his back and casually looping his arms around it.

"Nah," He snorted, trying to take on a 'too cool to care' bravado. He pulled another spinning move to shift his stance and was obviously just showing off now for the sake of it.

"I'm just playing the game." He brought his staff to hold in front of him and started darting towards Nazca again.

Something about the way he spoke reminded Nazca of the first girl he'd met. The one who wanted to fight him, just to prove she could win. Now he was up against someone who thought it was all a game. It was to be expected when most of the participants in this crazy venture were teenagers, who had enough on their plates battling hormones without battling each other. More than ever, he felt horribly out of place in all of this.

The solution was easy. "Fine, then you win this round. Happy now?"

That had made the nutty girl happy, so it might satisfy this guy too. But just in case it didn't, Nazca didn't walk away. He ran, and he didn't look back.
