This RP is backdated to August 8th

There were definitely comparisons that could be made between Arkady and a small puppy. Point the first: boundless energy. Point the second: overly affectionate. Point the third… well, she was housebroken, so there was that.

At least the first point seemed to be getting under control relatively quickly. Though Arkady had picked Finn up and spun him around when he’d first announced the trip to his Wonder, she had quickly quieted down as soon as they left the apartment, expression closing off just as Vanya’s had been, and Tate’s before her. She stuck close to Finn as they walked away from Florence Court, both of her hands clasping his just a little too tight. “Where are we going,” she asked, unable to keep the smile off her face for too long, though her eyes were still crinkled at the corners with suspicion. “Are we going to space?”

They were, in fact, going to space, and she knew it. But asking made her feel better.

He transformed into Babylon Knight, and together they vanished to the Knight’s Square in Babylon. “Ohhh,” she said, her breath rousing a pale cloud of steam. “Wow.” High above them spun the Milky Way, or something like the Milky Way, a glorious tableau of stars-and-city. She draped herself over his shoulders, ignoring the picnic basket entirely. “Where are we? Is this Babylon? Why’s there lights everywhere?”

Then she kissed him on the ear and hugged him, tight. “This is so cool!”

Whatever darkness had dwelt inside Avalon, Finn could see no sign of it in Arcady now. The whole world was brand new to her, and she faced it with boundless enthusiasm. Knight activities came easily to her - perhaps more so than anything a civilian had to do - and it seemed wise to school her quickly in how to defend herself and all the duties of her station. The Negaverse did not take kindly to traitors, and while they perhaps had not yet realized Avalon’s desertion, he knew that sooner or later they would.

And he needed her to be prepared for that. And they needed to be prepared to face them when that time came.

He’d come across plenty of knights who didn’t have the slightest care for their wonders, and he still worried that Avalon’s would be just as she left it, with a cruel ancestor waiting to mock her again. Taking her there would be no good. Arkady was in no position to bear the disdain of her predecessor and he was not cruel enough to subject her to that. But Babylon - Babylon was his to visit as he wished. There was no cruel ancestor there, no danger lurking. It blazed bright against the long night of Mercury, the ideal starter wonder.

“Yes,” he said, arms tight around her. He’d never brought her here when she was still Tate - he’d still been too cowed by Menachem’s sourness. Looking up towards the hillside, he counted gaps in the light. “Yes, this is Babylon,” he said. “And I have some work to do. If you come with me, I’ll explain everything. Okay?”

She tucked herself around him, and looked where he did. She saw lights, interspersed evenly throughout the levels of the city, like the beats of a heart, but--with holes. Missed beats. That stunk of wrongness, and she wrinkled her nose as she released Babylon. “Okay,” she agreed, amiably. “I’ll take the basket.” She snatched it out of his hands, swinging it easily and freely as they headed up into the city.

“If you’re Babylon and it’s Babylon, then who is flying the plane,” she asked, “Is it me? I don’t remember how to fly a plane.” Had she ever known? Oh, probably not.

Arkady hopped a bit ahead, and turned around to smile at Babylon. “Do I have someplace like this,” she asked. “A pretty city on a hillside with stars?”

Babylon had no idea where she had picked up that turn of phrase, but he laughed. “The city is Babylon,” he explained with a chuckle, keeping pace with her as they climbed. “And I’m its knight, so I’m also called Babylon, but it’s just a title.” They made their way to the first gap in the lights. Two lamps had gone out, and a third flickered like it might fail soon. Babylon reached into his lantern and drew out the Wick. He skimmed his fingers over the glass to gather light, and gently lit the first lamp.

“Babylon’s greatest treasure is its light,” he said, moving to the second lamp. “It’s in my lantern, and it’s beneath the city, and right now I’m putting little pieces of it into the lamps. My lantern and the main light never go out, but these get used up and fade over time…” He’d never figured why that was, why the lamps had to be lit - perhaps it was just how it had always been done, and there was a way to wire them all to the source. He’d speak to Mistral and see what she thought could be done. “They get used up powering the barrier,” he explained, pointing to the softly undulating blue dome above their heads. “And the dome protects the city.”

He moved on to the third lantern and said to her, “You have an island.” He didn’t know much about Avalon, much to his chagrin. “A kingdom of some sort off the coast of England. It’s in Arthurian legend. You never took me there, but something happened to it and that’s why you’re here with no memories,” he said carefully. “But if you want to go there, and you want me to go with you, I will.”

“Oh my god, where did that come from!” Arkady--well, the best word to describe it is ‘fluttered’--circled Babylon and his Wick, trying to get a look inside the lantern to see if there was, like, a hole in it, or something. She looked up at the dome, green eyes wide with disbelief. “It stops the snow! Oh…” She reached up, like she might be able to touch the high dome of the city so easily, and was disappointed to find that she could not. “Oh,” she repeated, sadder, but then she turned her attention to the lantern from which he had drawn the light.

The glass was cold. Well, that was weird. “Why do we have a picnic basket,” she asked, trying not to look too disappointed in her lack of being able to pull off Babylon’s pretty trick. “Are we on a date? Because picnics are dates. I saw that in The Little Mermaid.” Oh, yes, she had been very busy with Finn’s Netflix account lately. It was a good way to catch up on all the social norms she didn’t know, right?... Right?

She sighed. “Can I touch the light, too? Is it warm? I think everything on Mercury is probably cold.”
PostPosted: Mon Aug 18, 2014 11:23 am

Well, now was as good a time as any to explain planetary motion. “We’re actually really close to the sun right now,” he said, watching her prod the lantern experimentally. “Mercury rotates really slowly, so it’s night for a really long time?” The lantern, of course, was cool to the touch, the way all light in Babylon was. He hefted the wick in his hand.

“It just kind of lives inside the lantern,” he told her, pulling her close and beginning to make his way towards the next gap in the lights. “It collapses down--” Actually, he wasn’t sure how it worked and he would have to figure it out some other time. As far as he knew, it only worked for him, and only on Babylon - but that seemed like far too much to dumb on her when he couldn’t actually explain it.

And then - there she went again, asking questions that made him seriously have to remind himself not to kiss her on the spot. “We have a picnic basket,” he said, “Because we are going on a picnic. As friends. This is a friend date.” Or something like that. God, this was confusing and weird.

As they neared the next set of lanterns, Babylon peeled another little ball of light off the lantern and held it out to her. “Yeah,” he said. “You can touch it. Here.”

Babylon's attempt at education was considered, then roundly ignored. Who cared? Mercury was so pretty. He was so pretty. She watched him turn his face to the light and sighed. Friend date, she thought glumly, kicking a snow drift. What if she didn't want it to be a friend date? What if she wanted it to be a Kiss the Girl romance date? Probably that would have to be a mutual decision. Double sigh.

But he offered her a little ball of the light and that was not quite as good as a kiss but she would live. It was in the same neighborhood. Arkady ran her fingers through the light and shivered. She did it again, slower, and pressed the tips of her fingers against his with a tiny smile on her face. "It's cold," she sighed, shaking her hair over her ears like a wet dog. "Will it get hot when the sun comes up again? Or do you think it will always be cold?"
PostPosted: Mon Aug 18, 2014 11:24 am

He thought he saw a flicker of dismay at his suggestion that this was a friend date, and tried to restrain whatever flicker of hope that ignited in him. No, Babylon thought sternly. Arkady didn’t have the social framework required to give consent - right? Was that how it worked? Something, something, don’t ******** the amnesiac. Don’t even kiss her. Even if she’d been consuming a steady diet of Disney Princesses and was dreaming of happily ever after. Especially then.

He’d set something terrible into motion.

“I think it will always be cold,” he said, drawing his hand away and feeding the light into the dark lamp above them. This gave him an idea, though, something he could give her, and he thought he even had one on him.

Babylon dug around in his pockets until he found the little glass sphere he was looking for, and he held it out to Arkady. “Here,” he said, slipping the chain over her fingers. “That’s for you to keep.”

Babylon gazed up at the mountain. He didn’t see any more dark spots among the lights. Slipping the Wick back into the lantern, he shot Arkady a grin. “Ready for lunch?” he asked. “There’s a little bit of a park up at the top of the city. Let’s head up there.”

He didn’t look happy at her. She wanted him to smile at her, and touch his forehead to hers, and to hold his hands. But he was doing something, probably something important. Making the sky stay in one piece. She looked up at it again and huffed out a tiny sigh, her shoulders slumping. “That’s sad,” she said. “When will the flowers grow?”

He was rummaging in his pockets and she stopped spinning idly in place to watch him, wide-eyed and curious. When his hands resurfaced from the massed fabric of his… coat… pants, there was a bright light on a chain. “Ohhh,” she said, and she held out a hand so he could tangle the chain around it. It was so pretty, she thought, holding it up as if it were a lantern of her own. Soo pretty.

“Okay,” she said, draping the chain of her new necklace over her head. It was definitely the super prettiest, although still not as pretty as Babylon, who kind of glowed from the inside. She leaned over to drape her arm around his shoulders as they hiked up to the top of the city, and as they laid out the picnic basket. From here, she could see--she could see something. Something bright blue and starry looked up at her from the valley floor. “What’s that,” she asked, pointing as he unpacked the food in the basket. “It’s pretty.”

“The flowers can grow at night,” Babylon assured her, and he pointed out to her the bits of growth peeking out from behind garden walls here and there. Up in the park, the ground was coated by soft, dark moss, and the ancient trees reached towards the sky with branches coated in bright new growth.

“What?” he asked, looking to where she was pointing. “Oh,” he said, smiling fondly and brushing a hand over Arkady’s hair. “That’s Mistral. Anabel’s wonder. You’ll get to go there someday.” Even from far away, he could see the garden’s glow. “The light comes from flowers she’s growing there,” he said, turning to finish unpacking their lunch. He handed Arkady a sandwich.

“I used that jelly you picked out when we went to get groceries,” he said, peeling the plastic wrap off his own food. “How do you like Mercury so far?”

She found a good tree to lean against and settled down among its roots, her sandwich held in both hands as she scooted down the bark of the tree. “They must be magic,” she said. “Flowers need sunlight. It’s a Rule.” She said rule reverently, like being a rule made something completely inviolable--and of course, why wouldn’t she think that? She didn’t know that her rebirth had come at the cost of one of the core rules of purification. But then, neither did anyone else.

Taking an experimental bite, she nodded. “It was a good choice,” she told him. It was strawberry preserves--she liked the big chunks of fruit more than anything, although the crunchy cashews were nice, too. “You are the best at sandwiches.” True to form, she ate only half her sandwich before settling it down. “I like Mercury alright,” she said. “It’s very pretty, and very cold, but it’s alright.” Her forehead wrinkled a little as she scrunched up her nose. “Wasn’t there supposed to be somebody here? Who stands the watch when you’re on Earth with me? What if Chaos comes and you’re not here?”

The things she remembered from before never made much sense, she reflected. Chaos was ice, so… wasn’t it already here? “Hvergelmir said that Chaos was ice,” she related. “But this isn’t Chaos, is it?”
PostPosted: Mon Aug 18, 2014 11:25 am

“They must be magic,” agreed Babylon, biting into his sandwich. It was identical to hers, and very good. It was odd that of all things she would think to ask about who watched over the city when he wasn’t there - almost as though she remembered some, but not all, of what he’d told her about Menachem. If nothing else, now was his chance to change the record and not tell her about the ancestor who had belittled him - only about the man who had encouraged him to reach his full potential as a knight.

“You’re right,” he said, watching her set down the sandwich - he’d known she would do that. “There used to be someone. He was my teacher. But he was very old and very tired and he asked me to take him back to the Cauldron so he could be reborn, so I did.” He was certain that explanation would only bring more questions, but it seemed to be a decent primer. “If Chaos comes and I’m not here, I think I’ll know.” He felt connected to his wonder in a way he hadn’t before the whole ordeal with Menachem’s starseed - maybe it was just a result of being the sole knight of Babylon. “So I’ll be able to come back and deal with it.”

As for Chaos being ice, well, he’d never heard that metaphor before and wasn’t certain what she meant by it. “No,” he said, “This is just your ordinary, run of the mill ice. Nothing Chaos about it. It’s just weather.”

Arkady considered this information, as she considered all information, and tucked it away for further consideration. Thinking of the person who probably protected Avalon only made her deeply uncomfortable in a way that she did not want to examine--like prodding a broken bone, or--she tucked her chin into her scarf. At least now she knew why he had insisted she dress warmly. “He went with the white lady,” she said. It was not a question, she just--it was true.

“Take care of your pretty city,” she instructed, leaning awkwardly sideways to rest her cheek on the top of his fluffy head. “It’s important.” If she had an island, like he said, why didn’t she know where it was? In her head she saw the shore, slate-gray water and seafoam, a salt-stained dock jutting out into the sea. But it didn’t feel like hers. Not the way she imagined the city must feel like her Babylon’s.

She shifted onto her knees, fastidiously set her sandwich aside so it wouldn’t get in the moss, and leaned forward enough to look him in the eyes. They glowed much more obviously when he was Babylon. The visor, though, that got in her way, so she reached out and pulled it off, very gently and carefully. “You love me,” she said, and there was no question in that, either. He had promised that he loved her on the day of their reunion. She hadn’t stopped to examine the glowing marks on his face then, too shy or too overwhelmed--and she hadn’t asked about them since, because it never seemed like a good time. But they were alone here, and she wanted her turn to examine them. Why not now?

“Don’t move,” she instructed him, making eye contact very seriously. “I’m studying.”

The lines were long, straight, and blue. Not like cracks in his skin--why had she thought they would be--but as if he just glowed, sometimes, in some cells. She traced a long one over his nose, down the scar on his face, and into his hair. For a moment, her hand stayed there, unmoving. Arkady bit her lip and looked away for a moment, hair falling into her face. She wanted to kiss him so badly, she thought, but he’d never let her before. Nor had she really tried. All the movies agreed that it was the boy who ought to make the first move, but what if he just wasn’t moving?

No one was here to know if she kissed him rather than the other way ‘round. Just in case, she looked over her shoulder at the empty, quiet park. Not even the buzz of a bee… it was just them. So, no one would tell on her if she did. Unless Babylon--but no, he wouldn’t. Arkady leaned forward and pressed her lips to his, very gently. He tasted like peanut butter and strawberries, but instead of committing to the kiss, she broke it off and rocked back onto her calves. “I love you,” she said, very quietly.
PostPosted: Mon Aug 18, 2014 11:26 am

He was trying so hard to take what he thought was the moral high ground, but Arkady was making that very, very difficult. “I do love you,” he said carefully, breath catching in his throat at her touch. He thought he could feel static electricity in the air between them, and although he was not doing it on purpose, held his breath the whole time her hand was on his face. Her intentions were clear: he saw her move to kiss him.

And he let her do it. I’m an awful, shitty person, thought Babylon. But her lips were soft and sweet, and he wanted to kiss her more, even when she pulled away. I am such an awful, shitty person, he thought miserably. She loved him, she said. And he was scared by that, because what if it was just like he'd been cautioned and he was trying to turn Arkady into a carbon copy of the women she'd been before, with Tate's personality and General Avalon's libido? He hadn't set out to do that. He didn't even want to do that. But what if, insidiously, he was inflicting that on her?

"I think we need to go slowly with this," Babylon said, brushing her hair carefully behind her ear. "You've been through a lot lately and people are going to get the wrong idea." Had that been too harsh? Too close to a rejection? He backpedalled quickly.

"I mean, Arkady," said Babyon, leaning up to kiss her forehead - that was safe and chivalrous, right? "I love you. I love you a lot and I think we're probably soulmates or something equally ridiculous and I'm not saying we can't be a couple couple someday and go on dates and kiss in public and other stuff but right now there are a lot of other considerations I have to be conscious of." Like that she was basically mentally a child. She needed to get a more firm sense of self, and maybe... Maybe in six months, if she still wanted him then--

He wanted to kiss her on the mouth again. He also knew that that was a very dumb idea.

This was not a satisfactory answer to the question implied by her short little kiss. If this were any less satisfactory she would probably be crying. It hurt to hear him say no to her, even if it was couched in such pretty words. It hurt and she hated it with a sudden, vicious ferocity. "Why not," she asked. "What are you afraid of?" That was what all that nonsense he'd just said had meant, right? A lot of other considerations he had to be conscious of... Other people's fears shouldn't matter in this, and it offended her that they did. It sent chills down her spine, icy fingers playing her vertebrae like piano.

She had seen how some of them cringed away from her. If that was what this was about, she couldn't imagine a single way to ever change it. Maybe, if she gave it some time, an answer would present itself to her. In the meantime, she pressed her palms to either side of his face. "You're mine. You said you were mine. Aren't you?"
