There was a voice coming from one of the break rooms near the labs. The tone of the voice, though quite monotonous, was notably pleasant for this time of day. Early afternoon was notorious for sugar crashes and caffeine withdrawals, and the drive for conversation during this time was occasionally not very high among some of Deus' worker bees. That wasn't the case for Mimsy, who had decided to use her short break to catch up with Svensyl over tea. This might not have been unusual, had she not set a place for him across from her: in addition to the teacup in her hand, there was an empty cup that sat in front of a cameo brooch, which she appeared to be talking to. Out loud. "Well, yes, of course," she said to it, laced with a hint of stifled laughter. "Did you happen to overhear our conversation this morning? I do hope that you were listening. I would have difficulty repeating such a phrase."

Break time was the best time. Kiki was still getting used to this 'work' thing. She'd never worked a day in her life before coming to Deus. This was not the usual pampered life she'd grown accustomed to. She had no complaints, aside from aches and a lack of a play station 3. After all, she traded her comfy life for a place to keep her father safe from herself and her monsters. Here, she was not haunted by creepy shadows and violent poltergeists. She had a weapon, and an environment that staved them away. So what if she had to do laundry? And changed bandages. And... okay the bedpans she'd been leaving for other people to do. So far so good on that end. She dumped a fresh bag of laundered sheets onto the floor as she clomped into the break room. She came upon an odd sight here. Not that odd sights were uncommon nowadays. A terribly odd looking woman was having a conversation with some jewellery over tea. That broach looked a lot like her weapon's totem. Is that you too?< > Annabelle breathed airily in her hollow doll's voice.
"Did you breathe in too many chemicals?" Kiki accosted, rummaging through the cupboards for something to snack on. "Or is your weapon the same as mine?" She was oddly curious, even if she was hesitant to have a conversation with an apparent lunatic.
Then again, wasn't this Mimsy? She'd seen her around the labs, after all. And she'd spoken briefly with her on Twitter. "Omigosh, do we actually have tea?" She rummaged some more once she tore her sights from Mimsy again.

As she noted the arrival of another hunter, Mimsy politely excused herself from her conversation with Svensyl to watch the girl search through the break room for something. "I have absolutely not inhaled or ingested any dangerous chemicals! Laboratory safety is of utmost importance. I have a flawless safety record," she asserted, so appalled by the idea that she opted to temporarily ignore the single spill marring that record. "But I--oh. Wait. My weapon? Are you referring to Svensyl's species, or the fact that he is sentient?" A trainee who read preliminary information and had a Jabberwock for a weapon? Surely that was too good to be true! She slid the totem towards her, freeing the teacup for their guest. "I will share my tea with you, if it is a blend that you find appealing. The coffee pot should still contain a suitable amount of water, which you may use steep it." She pulled a tin from her pocket and extended it towards her. "Please, have a seat. I am interested in learning about you and your weapon."

A tea party!? Oh ******** yes! The pinnacle of Princessdom! Kiki took a seat, wiggling as she prepared her tea cup. "Oh, I meant the totem. It's a cameo, just like mine! See?" She flashed her hand as if showing off an engagement ring. Sure enough, he weapon's totem was a cameo ring, depicting a female like skeleton. "So you're Mimsy, right? My name is Kiki." She expressed haughtily, sipping her tea with over exaggerated dignity. "Sometimes I talk to my weapon out loud too. They're kind of like little helper sprites. Like, when your Wii controller let's you know it's low on battery in Skyward Sword. Or a less annoying version of Navi from Ocarina. My weapon used to be a Cursed Doll. Her name is Annabelle. Ever played Japanese Horror games? Well she talks like one of those creepy asian dolls that has like one tone and pitch in her voice."

The motion that Kiki made to show off her ring elicited a reflexive motion from Mimsy, who mirrored the action by holding her hand out in turn to show off her own rings. After she discovered that this was not actually a 'who is the most married' competition, she opted to not comment. "Oh! I see. It is quite nice. Perhaps they were friends before they became our partners." It had been meant to serve as a lighthearted idea, but she realized just how awful that would be the second after it left her mouth, and hurriedly tried to move on. "Yes, I am Mimsy," she confirmed, straightening with pride. "It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance in person." The remainder of what Kiki said had made next to no sense, and just as she had found herself struggling to keep up, she found herself struggling to find an answer. At most, she could discern that this was probably about video games - the island had taught her that a Wii was a console, but the extent of her knowledge ended there. "I...have not played such a game, no." So far so good, even if it did require admitting that she didn't know something. "But I do agree with your comparison. I prefer speaking verbally when I am addressing him as I would with anyone else I would address verbally. It seems a bit rude to remove them from the world entirely, I think, considering all that they assist us with."

"Right? Cause if I don't, down the road I might end up convincing myself she's imaginary." Therefore out loud conversations would be the norm for a while. Annabelle was a person. Or thing. Sentient. She needed to be addressed as such. Shame no one else could hear her. "So you're not a gamer? I kinda figured as much. What's your thing then? You've been here a while, right? What do you like most about the Life Division?" She happily sipped her tea, and awaited answers.

"No." Mimsy shook her head, then took another small sip from her teacup. "I am aware of the content of a very small selection of games - namely 'Portal', due to its popularity among my fellow interns - but I would not identify as a typical consumer of that media." She took a deep breath to prepare herself for a potential outpouring of words, and her eyes lit up with the first spark of life she'd shown thus far. " Science. I enjoy all facets of science, and all of the opportunities provided here offer continually shifting potential for testing, theorizing, and observation. FEAR is such a versatile concept, and functions in an interesting parallel to the theoretical sciences that I studied before I came here. The research and advancements are truly boundless! Is there anything that you favor thus far? Anything that--oh!" With a little gasp, she abruptly clapped her hands together, her excited eyes locked on the girl across from her. "Many of the courses are simulated, which you might find enjoyable! Additionally, the second generation of a project that I have been assisting my brother with includes a display that is somewhat similar to some simulation games. Perhaps you might be interested in wearing a pair to test, when they have been safely completed for that phase?"

Kiki's eyes lit up at the mention of Portal. That was a definite favourite of hers. And once Mimsy went into detail of her love of Science, Kiki became more aware of where her interests lay. "I'd love to! Science is like, super cool and stuff." Kiki gleamed, sipping her tea with a nod. "I'm just a newbie and all, so I don't know all the technicalities of this Division. But I'm digging all of the super science centric vibe it has going."

Hearing the word 'cool' used as a descriptor for science in (what was presumably) an unsarcastic manner by someone several years her junior was an incredibly delightful experience for Mimsy, who now felt as though she had one more thing to add onto the list of things she had done very right, if by accident. It was a statistical possibility, if improbable. "It is super cool," she eagerly agreed, radiating the same definitive uncoolness of a desperately hip mom. "Is there a discipline of study that you prefer, or are you interested in all sciences? I am an astrophysicist, but I cannot deny an interest in most fields of study, if only in passing. My field offers limited insight here, however - I now specialize in the modification of FEAR-based creatures, so it is largely the concepts of matter and energy that are applied to my work at the present."

"No, not really. Science tends to be way too technical and over my head. I like the idea of it, and I really liked mixing stuff in science class in high school." Which was basically the equivalent of mixing baking soda and vinegar, and a long lecture of how it happened; said lecture was usually also over her head. "Oh right, that's called chemistry, right? I've played some video games with alchemy side quests that were also fun. Honestly, if there was a Video Game division, I'd be sold. Doesn't Dwight do surveillance? Do you know if there's other parts of Life that are more like that? I mean, I guess I could go into learning about runic stuff or medical care, but ******** people. People are a pain in the a**." She smiled and sipped some more tea. "So astrophysics, huh? That's all about stars and space, right? What do you mean by modifying Fear based creatures? Like Frankenstein stuff, or like sapping their energy to make light bulbs flash on and off?"

Just as one word had elicited a positive reaction a moment ago, one earned a notably negative one now. Hearing 'alchemy' seemed to make her uncomfortable for some reason, and she took on a faint edge of panic that made it seem like she desperately wanted to fast forward this part. "Chemistry is a possibility, but it is typically funded by its benefit to other hunters, and I am strongly inclined to agree with your sentiment of helping them." The deep frown that punctuated the claim implied she was serious. "Otherwise, experimentation is a large part of understanding FEAR. There are no mathematical laws or theorems that are universally agreed upon, and we are pioneers in many aspects, so there is less to comprehend." "But if Dwight's work intrigues you, I encourage pursuing that, if only to learn more about it. Technology for remote viewing might be just what you are looking for, and you certainly possess the talent to perform well." She paused to smile, crooked and selfishly proud in a way that made little sense until she spoke again. "He recruited me, and is my friend. He shares your interest in games as well, if you intend to play again." While Kiki sipped her tea, she took the chance to do the same. She had thankfully swallowed the sip before she was finished with her questions, the latter of which would have caused her to spit it right out again. "Like Frankenstein," she laughed, amused by the comparison, "but it encompasses energy as well. Astrophysics seeks an understanding of the universe, and FEAR is intriguing in this context in that it contains properties of both matter and energy. Ultimately, my intention is to preserve, enhance, and create these entities, rather than recklessly considering them expendable resources. Use of the energy alone ignores a potential for power greater than what we possess. Imagine the capability to create a physical construct just by desiring it, for instance."

"Oh, I get it. So most of this Fear research is guess work, then." Kiki nodded her head sagely. That made sense. The fact Halloween creatures existed because of fear was in itself a total 180 from what societies views of reality had been based from. "So it's viable then, eh? I'm not looking to nab his job or anything.." Though she would in a heartbeat, "But I'd for sure want to be in that line of work." Especially if Dwight was a huge gamer too. Someone who spoke her language, as it were. She wondered if he'd perhaps been the Pizza boy she fell for? She hadn't had her glasses on at the time, and was in a mild panic when he'd come to her rescue. Her theories on Fear and it's uses had her looking a bit distant in thought. "Like... I wish for a new doll, and boom. There it is?" She had an inkling Mimsy meant something else, but for Kiki, all examples needed to adhere to her needs in some way. What other way was there, if not for her own benefit? "It could happen, seeing that just being afraid of something creates minipets and goblins." The whole thing was often hard to come to terms with, even if her own persona was built off of delusions. "It's all kind of spooky."
