The bakery had been busy today, form the moment it opened until about half an hour ago. Arias was exhausted and while he had succeeded in remaining chipper and energetic with the customers, now that he was alone, he deflated. He set about cleaning and trying to get everything taken care of so he could close on time while still dealing with the slow trickle of customers. He wasn't unhappy, just ready to get off his feet.
He couldn't run this place by himself and today had been a harsh reminder ofs uch; if he managed to stay up after closing, he'd have to get online and post some 'help wanted' ads, but that felt like too much work. A bath, he could do.
Any more work…
Debatable.
He moved quickly, despite his absentmindedness; his hair was tied up in a ponytail, just only able to keep his shoulder-length hair out of his face. He had rolled up his sleeves and seemed very intent to finish his remaining tasks despite having somewhat mentally checked out for the time being; he had sort of zoned out and wasn't entirely paying attention to what was going on in the bakery around him.
litian Hope this works! I can make changes if they don't! <3

Marlin pushed open the door of the bakery, appreciative of the smells that even at this late hour wafted towards him. The decision to stop by the bakery had been half impulsive and half planned. It was impulsive in that after a fairly busy day at the shop where it had felt like there had been customers from the moment he opened, to pretty much when he'd been about to close up, he had fancied a hot chocolate and remembered that this bakery did a particularly nice one but also planned in that Marlin had brought along a small box with him containing a couple of ears of corn. It wasn't much and he knew it - what with the shop and his efforts to help the Resistance in his own small way, it meant that there was very little left over, even with his own personal needs being small. Marlin doubted that a couple of ears of corn would be begrudged though and thought that Arias might like the multi-coloured kernels that was a characteristic of this particular variety of the corn. Walking towards the counter he looked around for Arias, wondering as he did so whether the other man's day had been as busy as his had been. Kyuseisha no Hikari the start was perfect Kyu, sorry for taking so long for tagging back

It took only a moment before Arias reappeared at the counter, and an apology was immediately on his lips until he realized that this was not just another customer he had kept waiting. "Marlin!" he greeted, smile quickly dawning on his face. "I'm sorry, I hope I didn't keep you waiting! This place was hectic today, it feels like I've only just now gotten some time to clean up. But! It's been a while, since I saw you last, how are you doing? —Can I get you anything?" he said, all too eager to make sure the male felt welcomed.
For any friend that managed to stop by, Arias always tried his hardest to make sure they knew that he was happy to have them. He was already reaching to pull out some of the fresher baked goods, either hoping to give them away as an expression of friendship or because he wanted a little less to clean up when it came time to actually close.
…Or possibly both.

Marlin had settled in to wait until Arias appeared, but he had only had to wait about a moment before the other man appeared behind the counter. He shook his head at the other's attempt to apologise "I haven't been waiting long at all" he said, admitting "I've pretty much only just got here." A rueful note crept into his cheerful voice, "I can sympathise - it's been pretty busy at Dig In today" and by pretty busy he meant that it had felt like pretty much half the city had decided that they wanted to buy fruit and veg today. "And I'd love a hot chocolate if it's not too trouble." After all given that it looked like Arias had had a similar day to his own, Marlin figured that he could make do with the sachet stuff - even if it was nowhere as good. As Arias moved to pull out some of the baked goods, Marlin remembered the small box and placed it on the counter "By the way, I brought something for you." Adding as he opened up the box to reveal the two ears of corn inside "I know it's not much, but they're fresh picked today and although they're best roasted, they still taste nice after being popped in the microwave."

Arias blinked, looking between the bag and Marlin's face before he smiled. "You didn't have to bring me anything," he laughed, but seemed touched by the gesture. The little things people could do meant so much more, now. Or maybe it was only in these days that he ever realized how important the gestures were.
"I can get you anything you want, on the house. Hot chocolate--you want anything to go with that? I made too many..."
He paused, looking at what he'd had left. They were nearly depleted of most everything, but it seemed there was still a decent amount of leftovers. "...Too many everythings. The croissants are fresh, though, pulled them out only twenty minutes ago. Not much of them left, but..."
He smiled anyway. "If you see something you want, take it. It's the least I can do for anything homegrown."
Growing anything took a lot of time and dedication; Arias appreciated that more than any cupcake could express.

Marlin had been about to make a comment about not wanting to put Arias out, however at that moment his stomach had decided to loudly remind him that it had been a long time since his hastily grabbed lunch - a small sandwich that he'd ended up munching on in between sales. "Sorry" For a moment he looked slightly embarrassed as he admitted. "Lunch kind of ended up being on the shop floor today and I wouldn't mind a croissant to go with the hot chocolate, if you're sure they're leftover." Or maybe even two, since they really smelt good. It wasn't that he couldn't cook, since he could and could do so well enough to feed himself and others without poisoning them, no it was more that Marlin knew that Arias' baking was a much better than anything he could rustle up given that basic stuff was pretty much his limit. "By the way how have you been?" He continued, adding "Well apart from the shop busyness?"

Arias laughed, though debated on how to answer the last comment. In the end, he shrugged. "I've been doing better," he finally decided, though how much 'better' he was, he didn't seem to clarify. He'd had his dark patches in the past, though always seemed to plow through them with as much enthusiasm as possible. Or, at least, he wore as happy a face as he could manage—if not for himself, then for the ones around him.
He was tired, now, but with varying bouts of reassurance and hope, he was still powering through. "Just sort of taking each day as it comes. Not sure if I could ask for anything more, though. The world seems a tad bit unsteady, you know? Never know what tomorrow's going to bring."
He was just trying to be happy while he still could. "—Sorry to hear about your lunch, though! Here," he fished around hastily, grabbing a box and collecting a set of croissants—and a few other quick treats that were in reach. He closed the box quickly, hiding whatever other contents he might have been trying to hand off to Marlin and then turned to get some hot chocolate. "I can't remember if I ate lunch, myself, so I suppose I'll have to make a big dinner just in case. I suppose it's a bad sign when you start forgetting if you skipped a meal. What about you—anything fun going on in your life since we last spoke?"

"Better is good" Marlin said simply, accepting Arias' lack of elaboration by not pushing. "And I think a lot of us do that - take each day as it comes." He certainly did a fair deal of it himself. It was hard to believe sometimes that he had never planned to do shop work back when he returned to Destiny City having left to attend college especially when he had ended up working in two - first as store manager for his father and now, now that Fancy a Change was long gone, as manager for his stepmother's cousin. Although given that it was highly dubious that Lisa's cousin was going to come back, Dig In had pretty much become his shop. He reached for one of the croissants, bit in and made an appreciate sound - Arias made damned good croissants, made damned good hot chocolate too. It didn't take long for him to finish the first croissant and he was on his second one when Arias asked him about goings on in his own life. "Well I'm not sure whether many will consider it fun, but those blue tomatoes that I put in are still pumping out, enough so that I'm considering trying to ketchup some of it." That or tomato sauce, although he was leaning towards tomato ketchup more since blue tomato ketchup sounded fun. "And the pineberries are still cropping too" at least the white strawberry like fruits that he had planted in the garden at the back of the shop were still cropping and cropping well, unlike the plants that he had tried planting on Falias. He reached for another croissant, his third and offered "If the ketchup goes well, I can bring some along for you to try." Adding "That is if you'd like some." Kyuseisha no Hikari Sorry Kyu, for some reason I thought that I had already tagged this one cat_sweatdrop

Arias seemed surprised, though his smile never wavered. "I'm impressed you're able to get anything growing so well! I tried my hand at growing a few things--nothing big, just a few herbs. I think it took me all of a week to kill them. Though, it's easier to blame all the negativity in the air, certainly that must have something to do with the healthiness of plants, right?"
He didn't seem serious and laughed. "...Or I just haven't got a green thumb. Or enough thumbs. But if you can get anything to grow, I'd love to taste it. Something about homegrown food just..."
He leaned back thoughtfully and his eyes went to the ceiling as he racked his brain for the right word. Finally, he seemed to have found it and looked back down at the male in front of him. "Just tastes so much better. Leaves you feeling revived. Or, it does that for me at least. I think it's just amazing that anyone can devote so much love and effort into something. Wish I had that in me," he sighed, but didn't seem too terribly upset. Just amused at the thought; he smiled again before continuing, "Wish there were more people like you, too, though."

"Well back when Dad and Lisa were still living in the city I used to help her out with the garden and back when Dad still had the costume shop I used to grow tomatoes" Marlin admitted "So I guess you can say the growing's a continuation from that." He smiled "And I like tomatoes - at least the non red varieties" because there was something boring about putting the effort into growing red tomatoes when you could grow green ones, purple ones, yellow ones and even blue ones - particularly as they not only looked good, but also tasted good. He sighed his voice dropping as he admitted quietly, "I just wish that the things that I planted on Falias grew half as well as the stuff in the garden did." He drank some of the hot chocolate, then some more and appreciative note slipping into his voice as he said "And I wouldn't sell yourself short - you know I can't cook more than the basics" well apart from the ketchup which Lisa had taught him how to do. "And you make a mean hot chocolate" and given his partiality for pretty much all things chocolate he should know. Kyuseisha no Hikari no worries Kyu - apologies for taking so long to get to this myself

Arias looked sympathetic and nodded; he spent almost no time on his Wonder and hadn't even been there in weeks…months…
Years?
…Everything seemed like such a distant memory, but it had just become too much energy to travel there. Not when there wasn't even the slightest chance that his wonder could sustain life. It was a barren, desolate, lifeless place. Perhaps if he had put the time and effort into cultivating it as Marlin did his tomatoes, there might have been some hope for it, but Arias was shy of a green thumb. Or two.
He smiled at the compliment though found himself shaking his head. "A mean hot chocolate might be the only thing mean about me. But cooking is overrated, you could always just hire someone to cook for you. If there was a zombie apocalypse, cooking doesn't mean much. Hard to cook without the right ingredients. But I won't deny, I'd rather have hot chocolate than vegetables, for as awful as that sounds. I don't suppose I've fully grown up if I'm still reaching for the candy bar instead of the apple, but."
His smile softened and his mind seemed a bit far off. "I wouldn’t want anyone to grow up in a world like this."

"I guess" Marlin said in response to Arias' comment that he could always hire someone to cook for him, even though he knew that he wouldn't. He smiled "Although if I did that then I wouldn't have an excuse to drop by and drink your hot chocolate." At the other's comment about preferring hot chocolate over vegetables, the smile turned into an outright laugh "Well it's not like I can comment given the amount of occasions that I've been guilty of reaching for the chocolate bar" or for the mug of hot chocolate or for anything chocolate really. "About the only thing that rivals chocolate are cherry tomatoes - at least the non red ones - although I guess they're technically fruit." Kyuseisha no Hikari I'm really sorry it's taken so long for me to tag you Kyu, my irl is crazy atm. I will tag the our other two rps in a moment

Arias just laughed softly and shook his head. "You would always be welcome to drop by and drink my hot chocolate. I can't think of anyone who has an interest in vegetables--or fruit--and chocolate all the same."
It was nice. To be able to take a step back from the war and talk about something that probably wasn't that important. It seemed like such a relief, to think only about what Marlin was growing, or where he was going to get his hot chocolate and not, say, when the Negaverse was going to come bursting through his doors and haul him off to their secret centers.
A heavy sigh fell from Arias' lips; it seemed like he couldn't even keep his thoughts from drifting into the realm of worry for longer than a few moments.
It was only a matter of time before they found him, he figured.
So he needed to enjoy minutes like this while they lasted.

"I'll definitely continue to take you up on that" Marlin said with a laugh, "You know you're always welcome by Dig In" his voice turned serious "Both in and out of official shop hours." There was a distinction between the two, official shop hours being for shop stuff - the every day things that was both a business and a cover. Outside hours was for non civilian stuff and for things that would most likely get him shipped to one of Kedavradite's prisons, at best, at worse? Well Marlin tried not to think on too hard on the consequences of getting caught - about what they'd do to him. After all his choices had been made a while back. He wasn't about to change them now. He shook his head mentally, wishing that he could shake thoughts of the war away so easily and finished the last croissant, chasing up the last crumbs with some more hot chocolate. Arias really did make excellent hot chocolate. He drank some more of said hot chocolate before adding "I'll show you the garden if you come over and the pine berries." The white strawberry-like plants that tasted somewhat like pineapples made him think of helping his stepmother with the garden back in the days when she and his father had still lived in the city but it was years since he'd heard from either of them. It was deliberate decision, one that he'd made when he'd made the decision to stay and one that he'd stuck by - because in this day and age it was safer not knowing. Kyuseisha no Hikari no need to apologise, my own tag backs are crazy slow

Another hasty smile crossed Arias' face; in this day and age you had to take the good and really enjoy it, because you could never be certain what the Negaverse was up to.
Or when they'd be waking you up in the middle of the night and shackling you for delivery to one of their prisons.
"I'd like that, Marlin. I think a change of scenery would be absolutely delightful. It's very considerate of you, and I would be an absolute idiot to pass you up on that, thank you."litian /sob I am still awful, but I would be ready to close this one up soon if you were thinking the same! <3
