This is the text-equivalent of the CYOA adventure I've coded into game form here. If you can't download the file or just don't feel like downloading/playing a Python game, follow the story through this handy thread!

You can also use this thread to record your wolf's responses to the events laid out here. This is not necessary, but it could be a good opportunity for you to delve more deeply into your wolf's character.

So....read the story below, click on the links to take you to the next section (if you try to read through it all in order, it won't make any sense) and good luck!

The Brotherhood is hanging together by a thread. Many wolves have gone in search of the traitor Rotiart. Those who have returned have come back with empty paws. Many others have not returned at all.

Rumors have been whispered through the pack that the true alpha, Danel, still lives. Many in the pack remain fiercely loyal, clinging to this hope.
They believe that Rummy, the usurper, was struck down for trying to take the alpha’s role.

Others suspect that something more mundane and sinister is afloat – some malevolence that is picking off the Brothers one by one, Danel and Rummy included.

Whatever the case, the elders in the pack have banded together to provide a semblance of leadership and order. But they know it cannot last forever. Without a true, strong alpha, the pack will crumble.

Firdaws: “Hey, you! Brother!”

Firdaws: “There’s no time to laze around. There’s work to be done here.”

He squints at you.

Firdaws: “What rank are you again?”

HUNTER

Firdaws: “Right, I knew that, I was only testing you.”

Firdaws: “Listen up. The pack is hungry, but more than that, it’s restless. We need a proper hunt, together as a pack. Take your Brothers and scout out a target.”

You assemble with your brothers, heading out into the world to explore. It feels good to be doing something, to have a purpose again. Firdaws was right: It’s been far too long since you’ve had a chance to properly hunt.

You don’t have to travel far before you spot your target.

A small band of wolves – young adults, from the looks of them – seem to be traveling without much direction. You track them for many miles, observing them. They are young, carefree and oblivious to the danger lurking in the shadows.

And there are pups with them, eight in all. Four of them boys.

It would be no challenge at all to descend upon them, and the Shadowclan could use some new recruits.

Choose:
Attack now
Go back to the pack to get the omegas

ATTACK NOW

Moving in careful formation, you creep forward for the kill. There’s no reason to delay this any longer, you think.

But in your eagerness, you grow careless. You’re out of practice, and it shows. A misstep is all it takes to alert them to danger.

They’re young and naïve, but they’re not blind. You’ve given away your position. The prey scatters before you can attack.

You’ll be returning to your Huntmaster empty-pawed tonight. Best to learn some patience

GO BACK

The Shadowclan hunts as one. And when pups are involved, that means you need the expertise of your thieves.

You know better than to rush in half-cocked. You need to gather reinforcements and make a proper plan if you’re going to do this thing right.

Firdaws is pleased with the news when you tell him what you saw. He directs you to meet with the omegas. Together, you will attack tonight, under cover of darkness.

OMEGA

Firdaws: “Of course you are.”
Firdaws: “Our numbers are small, but there are still pups to tend to.”
Firdaws: “The youngest, Zarath, still must learn our ways. Go to him and teach him what you know.”

You do as commanded, seeking out the pup.

User Image

He is different from other pups that you’ve met in your time in the Shadowclan.

Most of the pups you meet are afraid, or angry, or eager to prove themselves.

Zarath is none of these things. The pup is oddly somber, respectful, with a certain wisdom that belies his age. He’s also uncommonly polite.

All of this has made him a joy for you, and you relish the time you spend training him.

He takes to his lessons naturally. He’s attentive, clever, and a good listener. He’s particularly interested in the stories you tell. He hangs on your every word.

User Image

Rorret: “Apologies for interrupting your lesson, brother.”

Rorret: “But there is a matter that needs some attending to.”

Rorret: “The hunters have returned from a scouting mission, and have found a target.”

His mismatched eyes gleam with delight.

Rorret: “Our services are required.”

It’s been a long time since you’ve been on a proper raid. You feel a little thrill of excitement at the prospect.

You follow the trail of the wolves you are hunting, catching their scent on the wind. Night is falling around you, and a thrill courses through you.

Though the group was fairly large when it was spotted earlier, there are now just three adults minding the eight pups. All the better for you.

You descend on them.

Choose:

Go for the kill
Steal a pup

KILL
Adults are a nuisance that must be dispatched. You dart forward, aiming for the largest of the wolves there, assessing him as the greatest threat.

User Image

He is a large, lumbering creature, and he fights bravely but sluggishly. He is no match for you and your training.

He goes down after a long struggle. He has torn a gash in your shoulder, but you got to his throat. His blood tastes sweet and coppery on your tongue.

You stop to feed, as your brothers crowd around you, sharing in the kill. They have kills of their own as well. It’s a good night.

You see that the omegas have safely retrieved two male pups. You don’t ask about the others. You suppose they were too weak.

Satiated, you return to the pack with your fresh blood.

STEAL

While the hunters maneuver into position, you dart forward from the shadows to steal a pup.

User ImageUser ImageUser Image

A cluster of three is available to you, within easy reach. Two males and a female, apparently siblings. As you move forward, a dusky-furred wolf moves to intercept you.

User Image

You’re not a fighter, but you can defend yourself.

The other wolf senses this. He knows, too, that his companions are falling at his sides.

He grabs a pup, the one closest to him – it happens to be the female – and withdraws. Coward? No. He’s running for help. You’d best gather your quarry.

You: “Hello there, little ones.”

The pups gaze up at you in fear.

You: “It’s all right. These wolves are not your family. See how they abandon you? We are your real brothers.”

You scoop up a pup by the scruff, nodding to your companions to grab a second male.
Together, warriors and omegas alike begin the trek home, slowed by the pups you carry. They stop crying, after a while.

One of the warriors was thoughtful enough to bring a few pups along as well. You are grateful. You had no chance to eat with your pack. You offer some to your new foundlings, honoring the pack’s traditions.

It has been a good night, and you are eager to see how these new recruits measure up.

WARRIOR
Firdaws: “Right, of course.”
Firdaws: “Listen. Rorret, the thief, says he spotted evidence of Danel outside a pack not far from here.”
Firdaws: “Xihuitl went to confirm these rumors, but he has yet to return.”
Firdaws: “I need you to go there and see what you can find out.”

You accept your instructions and head out, following the directions you were given.

As you approach your destination, you are caught off-guard by a powerful stench of female. It’s been a while since you’ve gotten a nose-full of it, and it’s stronger here than it has any right to be.

Intrigued, you step off of your path, creeping closer to the scent.

But it’s not a female that crosses your path first.

Iosef: “Are you lost, friend? You’re coming on the borders of Antianeira territory, and it may not be safe here. The warriors do not take well to strange males in their lands.”

You wait for fear to register in his violet eyes. But it’s recognition that meets you. You quickly realize: You are not the first cloaked wolf he’s seen.

You: “I’m looking for my Brother.”

His brow furrows.

Iosef: “Brother? Now that you mention it, I have seen another cloaked wolf pass through this area….”

You: “Yes?”

Iosef: “He said he, too, was looking for someone. A green wolf. I told him to check with our neighbors to the north.”

You: “Do you remember his name?”

Iosef: “He said he was Danel, alpha of the Brotherhood.”

A thrill runs through you.

Danel was here. He still lives.

Your god saw fit to leave this wolf alive, and so you do likewise, though it pains you to know that a wolf of his pitiful standing knows anything of your pack and its business.

Still. His information was valuable, and you follow the trail with renewed enthusiasm. You are closer than ever to figuring out the secret.

But the answers you find are not those that you seek.

You travel toward the neighboring pack, following the best lead you have been given, but before you can arrive, you are distracted by an odd scene.

In the shadows, far from the main path, there are signs of struggle. Old blood spatters cover trees and rocks. The earth is stained crimson.

And in the midst of it, shreds of fabric. Black and green. And emblazoned on one, the symbol of the Shadowclan.

Tracks and a trail of blood lead away from the scene. You follow these, anxiety rising in your chest.

A river, its current running fast and strong. The tracks stop here.

And dashed upon the rocks, scattered pieces of an orb, like the one worn at Danel’s throat.

What could this mean?

You fight it, but the sinking feeling in your heart spells out the awful truth.

Your god was here, and the traitor as well.

They fought.

They fell.

And they were swept away.

Choose:
Dash yourself against the rocks
Return home to report what you’ve seen.

DASH YOURSELF

Overcome by grief, you feel yourself losing control of your body. The despair grips you.

You’ve searched so long, and for what?

Before you can think about it, you step forward, tumbling into the river, and allow the water to wash over you.

Your body panics, momentarily, as the water covers your head, but your soul is at peace.

You’ve gone to be with your god now.

RETURN HOME

As heartbroken and disappointed as you are, you have a mission to complete.

Struggling away from the scene, you turn to make your way home, footsteps weary with grief.

You are hungry, and exhausted, but at last you make it home.

With what energy you have left, you report your findings.

And then you allow the grief to wash over you, allow the weakness to come for a short while, as you succumb to it in the darkness of your den.

Time passes, as it always does.

It has no mercy for grief or for weakness.

The pups grow older. The ones that were stolen grow comfortable with their new home. They form a friendship with their agemate, Zarath.

News passes through the pack. All have heard of the terrible discovery of Danel's fate. Some don't believe it. But none have the heart to keep searching.

Too many wolves have been lost on this quest. And if those losses have all been in vain...

The idea of trying again is devastating.

But there is one ray of hope.

In his delirium, the injured Huntmaster had a vision.

In it, Danel had come to him, guided him, comforted him.

His experience rings true to many of you.

It's no secret that Danel heard a voice, a voice that guided his actions.

And now it seems that another in the pack has this gift.

It seemed almost too good to be true.

But the silvery pup, Zarathustra, shows promise.

He claims that he hears the voice. That Danel speaks to him in his dreams.

Could this be true?

Could Danel live on, somehow, in a voice, or a spirit?

Could he have chosen Zarath as his rightful heir?

Only time will tell.
