"Maaamaaaaa - tooo faaassstttt!" Phoenix cried out, trying desperately to hold onto her mother's mane with her small clawed toes; her wings flapping to try and remain on the eager filly as she ran close to full tilt down the familiar - near daily path which lead them to none other than Papa's beach. Surely today would be the day she went toppling off Meridah's back, but as if the stars were aligned she'd managed to hold on all the way till she stopped as the decline became dirt, which became sand.

"See, you made it! I told you to hold on Phoenix." Meridah smiled, although she'd been perhaps a bit too excited to get to Voda today as she'd witnessed something amazing this morning....she'd have to remember to slow down in the future as she would have felt just awful if anything happened to Phoenix; but she knew her little baby bird was strong from being around her and Voda.

"Voda!" She called out, trotting along the sandy shores as she looked for her partner in crime; it had been over a month since Phoenix came into their lives and made it all the more fun. Meridah was always in a hurry every morning to eat her breakfast with her family before racing down to the beach; true she didn't really spend a whole lot of time with her family but they understood - it was hard to keep someone as vivacious as she in one place when her heart yearned to be somewhere else. "Are you around?" She called once more...perhaps he was out swimming?

Oh - but she was just too excited! She felt like she was going to burst!

"Papa!" Phoenix chirped, skipping up Meridah's neck to perch on her head as if to get a better view point...not even she knew what her mama was so excited about but was plenty eager to find out!

The Kelpi colt's body drifted peacefully in the water's gentle rhythm, his nose flaring and subsiding in quiet slumber to drawn in air as his body was cradled by giant kelp that just breached the surface. Back and forth, to and fro, carried... a little closer towards shore... his eyes flashed open, a sharp intake of breath punctuating his sudden awakening.

Oh!
The morning tide, moving towards shore- this day, the water's familiar patterns dictated such to occur after the two-legged's breakfast hour!

He flailed around with vigor, utterly shocked that he had overslept. He had been up late looking for pretty shells, admiring the opalescent sheen brought out by the moonlight. Diving, carrying the precious abandoned houses to the surface to see their beautiful glimmer.
It was sad, really, to see something that had once been cherished abandoned... but, sometimes, aquatic creatures outgrew their hardened exterior and shed the former Home to begin anew. It wasn't their fault that time dictated an alteration of form.

Regardless, he'd stayed up too late, and now he had overslept!

A giant kelp forest had formed in the bay he called home not long ago, and he had dexterously wrapped himself in its long vines and leaves to tether himself closer to shore. His position thus secured- very carefully, as he hadn't wanted to risk being carried too far by a night-time current- he now struggled to release himself from his makeshift bed.

Meridah!

The thought spurned his efforts, and he felt a gentle tug as a length of kelp broke off. Sorry!- he hadn't meant to, he didn't like damaging it, it had done nothing wrong- but, but, Meridah!
With another silent apology and gentle nudge to last night's living bed, he dove beneath the surface and began his quick race towards the shore. Using his tail generously and riding the current to propel himself ever-quicker towards shore, he raced towards land.

Breaching the surface not some 20 yards distant, he frowned as a wave blocked his view.
Diving quickly, he soared to the ocean floor and spun to kick upwards using all four hooves. Twisting his tail in a spiral just before hitting the surface, he burst upwards and cleared the waves, a cascade of shimmering droplets raining down from his sleek form.

He could just make out a small, dark form with a burst of brilliant red- ah!
Perhaps... perhaps a tiny form atop the other? Maybe? Ah, but he was too far to see. Back beneath, he swam the final yards and started flailing his hooves as soon as they hit sand. Flipping his tail up as high as he could to avoid dragging it behind him, he trot-cantered towards his friend.

"Meridah!" he panted, drawing up closer as he blinked at the sunlight penetrating his vision. ".... Hi!"

As mere seconds ticked by, the mare felt her tail fidget in an impatient aggitation...it really wasn't often that she had to wait; and well patience wasn't entirely her strong suit. When it came to tactical advances and ambushes she had all the time in the world but when she was excited; nothing was quick enough. With warm eyes scanning the coastline and the rolling waves she picked up the sounds of splashing - ah, there he was.

Grinning wide the filly nearly danced in spot as her friend came closer, a little winded from what she took it as making his way over here in a hurry.

"What took you so long!" Meridah let out a small chorus of good natured laughter, of course she could never hold anything against Voda; even if he wasn't right here whenever she came.

Truth being - Meridah was usually the late one as her mother would insist to groom her mane or something silly like that. It wasn't like she was entering any contests for beauty; but between her mother and father she assumed it was because she was the only girl that they tried so hard to make her act like one.

Although she could probably get out of it by threatening to roll in the mud - luckily such a threat never had to leave her lips.

"Papa...." Phoenix chirruped, leaping off her mother's head and giving a few haphazard flaps to make it not so elegantly onto Voda's back once he was right next to them. Immediately she used her small beak and 'preened' at his fin tips in greeting.

"Good Morning though...how was the night?" She asked, a normality of every day; she assumed not too eventful...but even so Voda wasn't entirely the expressive one so if it was she wouldn't know any better until he told her. Which always happened, because they were best friends forever and BFF's did things like that. Clearly though, she was nearly vibrating off the beach with her news.

Unable to even wait for a response she burst. "SO - I was talking to mama, guess what she said! Phoenix is about old enough to fly; and mama and papa birds teach their kids to fly so we gotta get teaching her to fly too!" Although, it wouldn't be so easy since neither of them could fly. "So we need to make a plan for operation Phoenix-flying-lessons!" Another bright smile crossed her lips as her eyes danced with excitement, the same exuberant joy when she'd found the little egg she assumed was a dragon which became a mystical phoenix.
PostPosted: Sat Aug 16, 2014 3:02 pm

Voda had wilted a little, feeling moderately guilty over his entanglement with the kelp at her greeting. But, she was happy, and laughing, and he had made it here as quick as he could, and- the colt perked up and grinned in response, happy as ever to be with his friend.

Spotting little Phoenix, he scanned her quickly with his eyes as she f-... well... fumbled- onto his back. He peeked around at her and grinned wider as she preened his fin tips "Hello, little one." he coo'd. The sensation was not unpleasant, but it did tickle oddly, so he was giggling slightly as he turned back to the exuberant filly.

He'd just opened his mouth to speak around his ear-splitting grin when she continued on, and his eyes got wide as oysters at the announcement. All thoughts of the shells forgotten, he looked from Meridah to Phoenix and back again.
"Really?!" It was more an exclamation of surprise that prompted that question than disbelief; he knew that Meridah would never mislead him (well, maliciously, and anyway it didn't count when it was in a game) and never ever lie to him. Ever.
But... that was just so cool!

Swimming lessons and flying lessons weren't too different, right? He looked at the sky, and swallowed slightly, his breathing catching up with the idea that he was now standing still and his little chest didn't need to work so hard.
He hadn't really needed to be taught how to swim... sure, he wasn't very good at it at first, but it was really just instinct with a little bit of practice. And. Water. And... he had no idea how things stayed up in air.
Well, he knew it had something to do with wings, and that's why he couldn't fly (he wiggled his tail at the thought; wouldn't trade it for anything!) but... but...

Looking back at Meridah with solemn gold eyes, the little colt nodded firmly.
"Alright. What's the plan, Knight?" Oh, he'd contribute, sure, but, well... she was always so much better at making plans.

Cocking her feathered head to the side Phoenix gave her wings a little flutter at the news. Fly? She was going to fly? She made little hops with her legs up and down her papa's backside, chirping all the while as her voice sang a little bird song. "Fly, fly, fly, fly flyyyyy"

Dancing on her hooves in excitement the mare made circles around the kelpie colt, her tail swishing in delight. "Isn't it fantastic! She'll be up in the skies like the majestic phoenix she is! She'd often dreamed of how it would be to fly high in the sky, or swim in the depths of the seas with Voda. However it seemed destined the three of them were from completely different elements and bound to never stay together.

They made it work though....as Voda was reluctant to leave Meridah for too long, and vice versa, and Phoenix was of course too young to fly till now.

Once prompted in the manner of a plan the filly did what she did best, and knitted her brow deep as she tried to think of the best plan of action. They couldn't lead by example as perhaps parent birds did...nor did she think either of them had a good idea of really how one flew. They could try and find other birds to teach her...but not all birds could talk like Phoenix...so it could take time and take them far to find someone fitting some description.

Turning her head around as she remained in thought, she recalled back to the conversation with her mother; and that birds were born knowing how to fly; but often had to 'leave the nest' thanks to a parent.

....oh wait.

Nests were in trees. It was really fly or fall wasn't it. But...neither of them could really mimic that...plus there was the matter of a good wind current.

Suddenly, her eyes widened.

The cliff. "Its just like a tree!" She exclaimed, motioning towards the cliff. "Phoenix would take off there like she would on a tree branch!" Okay...well there usually was a parent bird near by to catch said baby...wasn't there? "You could wait down below to catch her in the sea if she doesn't get the hand of it...gotta be safe." A sage nod, completely unseen by Phoenix as she looked to the cliff and gulped, nuzzling closer against Voda's fin. "I..i'm scared.."
PostPosted: Sat Aug 16, 2014 4:29 pm

The Kelpi paused, eying the land-dwelling filly dubiously.

A cliff was a little like a tree, in theory, but it really was much higher... and what if a gust of wind blew Phoenix into the cliff itself, instead of away? The tide was coming in, the wind was blowing in much the same direction- in, towards the cliff, not away!
He puffed his chest out and curled his tail around his side protectively, flexing his shoulders so his back-fins almost seemed to shield the little bird. "It's okay..." he murmured, as much to himself as to her.

He took a deep breath, trying to follow her logic.
If Phoenix fell, she'd fall to him.- and he'd catch her, he knew it! He'd rescued Meridah, he could save their baby bird!- and... If she flew, it would be marvelous! But... if she went the other way...

He frowned.

The wind began to blow gently across his face, and Voda kept on frowning.

After a few moments, he realized that the wind was blowing on his face, towards the sea, and therefore away from the cliff-face.

Peeking at the sky suspiciously, he sighed once more.
Well. This was Meridah, and he trusted her explicitly with his own life. It was the life of precious Phoenix that he was a little more... cautious... with.

"Well. Alright."

With a slow turn of her head back to the cliff she could see it all in her mind's eye, playing out like a high definition movie; calculations spinning in her still rather youthful and inexperienced mind as if she had been around for some time. This was her talent, her passion, her gift; she would be the master tactician and lead herself and others to victory in any scenario against the wicked of the world...but first, teaching her beloved baby bird to soar. Her determination nearly lit her eyes ablaze, feeling if Phoenix was anything like her the fires in her soul would be the wind beneath her wings; all she had to do was spread her feathers and it would be okay.

Everything would be fine. She could feel it in the depths of her core.

Looking back to Voda and Phoenix she was surprised to see the scared look on the baby bird's face, and of course the contemplation of Voda. Although he'd seemed to agree, she felt perhaps he didn't quite agree with her fully - even if his words covered the truth she could see oh so faintly on his face. Her bold and fired up nature sizzled a bit as she felt a dose of compassion that not everyone could understand the confidence she had in her own mental abilities.

"Hey...." Her voice was uncharacteristically soft, a tone which had only surfaced rarely. "I wouldn't suggest anything if there was a potential of either of you getting hurt." Meridah assured, taking a few steps to brush against Voda; nuzzling the little bird on his back. "Mama's don't let harm come to babies right?"

Phoenix hesitated briefly, in her heart she knew her parents to only want what was best for her...even if she knew no different being raised by foals. It didn't however stop the pounding of her little heart as she knew it was a big step...and she only hoped she wouldn't let either her Mama or Papa down. "Awight...I...I will twry..." She tweeted, hopping from Voda's protective fin and onto Meridah's head once more as she grasped onto her flop of a mane.

With a smile, hoping they would trust her and then no surprises popped into her equations, the filly gazed once more to her friend.

" We'll head up the hill, and I'll guide you once you reach the cliffs from the sea.....I - er....we wont let anything go wrong right?" She said in a mix of question and reassurance. Meridah knew Voda would catch Phoenix before she fell into the water...there was no way he'd miss as he'd managed to save her before.

A little bird was nothing in comparison to a fellow equine.

He sighed gently.

It wasn't that he didn't trust her with Phoenix's life, rather that he didn't trust immediately that which was... out of her control. The sea, the wind... the cliff, perhaps.
Her plans? Even if he didn't understand them all the time, they were great plans. He would, perhaps, always be a few steps behind her mental leaps- but he got there, in the end.
Some courses could be followed without question, others he thought about a little more- due to some difference in the way their minds worked, or... something.

He just had a.... a healthy respect for nature.

... And his tail.
"Yeah."

The last remnants of his frown faded from his features, replaced by a determined smile. "Yeah."

Reaching out, he carefully nosed Phoenix upwards for reassurance and then nodded to Meridah. "Okay."

Birds were meant to fly, just as he had been meant to swim and Meridah had been meant to be a Knight. It wouldn't be right to let his fears, however well-meaning, prevent her from doing what she had been born to do.
The wind was right, and though it had changed course quickly it was now blowing steadily in the other direction. Perhaps, when respected, nature was... kind.

He turned, feeling every step away from them like a growing weight upon his chest, then shook it off (they'd be back together soon!) and trotted into the waves, his tail already twisting, eager for the task at hand.

"We won't let anything go wrong!" and he disappeared beneath the waves.

Watching him leave as the same weight began gripping at her soul; it was never...had never been easy to leave or see him go. If she could have spent all her time with him she would have. However it just wasn't fair that he couldn't come further out from the beach...she did love her family and enjoyed time with them; but it wasn't the same. Meridah needed Voda in her life, it was a feeling she couldn't control and without him she felt as if she was missing part of herself. The bond of friendship they shared had laced so deeply in her complete being that it was near impossible to function without it.

Phoenix had begun to weave her own threads in her soul, but it was also she who had strengthened the pair to their current state.

Yet as if in sync she knew it was not a goodbye, and turned her head and hauled her "heavy" body up the cliff on that path she knew like her own hooves. Muscles propelled her up the slope as her gaze fell occasionally down to the sea to try and spot his figure in the waves. It didn't take long before she was atop the cliff, the spot she stopped every day to take one last look at the beach she called her second home before bidding Voda a farewell to the next morrow.

Slowly and cautiously she headed to the edge, the wind blowing past her and out to see as it carried her firey hued locks against her face. She'd never noticed how it was slowly growing as the hair usually didn't touch her face unless it was wet and now she could feel the soft locks caress her brow and cheeks. Strange how time slipped away like that.

"Are you ready, Phoenix? Birds spread their wings wide, feeling the air was if it will carry you up into the skies. The wind will carry you so far, then you need to flap. Both wings in sync. Chest up, as if you are running through open meadows..." The filly closed her eyes, her chest lifting up as her chin tited skywards; making it seem like she could take off into the skies with invisible wings. "You'll feel it in your soul, dear baby...just like I can feel you can with everything inside." She looked up, seeing the small songbird look down at her gawkingly, taking it all in.

"Papa will catch you below if he needs to...but you'll make it. I know you will!" She encouraged, looking down the distance to see if Voda had made it to a good spot yet.

Voda slipped easily through the water, making his way towards the churning waters that lay beneath the cliff.
He knew the ocean's rhythm like the beat of his own heart- and, right now, his heart beat steady and true to the cadence of faith.

Meridah and Phoenix.
They were the truest family he had ever known. A family of friends, of fun, a family how it was supposed to be- earnest, caring, always and forever lasting. Good times and bad, through sun and storms, day and night- even when they weren't together, they were in each other's hearts, and that was... Family.

He turned a happy spiral beneath the waves, dodging back and forth experimentally as he neared the cliff. His diving capability had grown, with his lungs- he'd noticed that he could draw in more air in a single breath now, though he didn't really think to question why. It was just... a good thing, like knowing Meridah- a great thing- a perfect thing. And little Phoenix.

At the thought, the Kelpi burst to the surface, peering up at the cliff expectantly. Little Phoenix, now big enough to fly.

He spotted her form, brilliant against the sunny sky, just... just a little bit too far to his left. Wiggling his tail to send up a greeting splash, he positioned himself beneath his family, ready and waiting.
Wherever they needed him. Wherever he had to be. Whenever. Always.

Flicking his tail, he moved a little forward- a little back- to each side- testing his speed, his agility, how quickly he could close the distance between Danger and Safety for their little one. Just in case. Because, that's what Fathers do. And, oh, he was quick!
Thus satisfied, he gazed up at the Knight on the cliff.

Where do you need me?

There he was, perfect. Meridah surveyed his position in accordance to the speed of the wind in her mane and the length Phoenix would be able to take off from away from the cliff side. Voda had begun to splash around in the water this way and that, more or less making his own calculations she assumed. The filly knew the wind was pretty steady, not overly gusting in strong spurts so any distance she got would be fairly away from the cliffs before a potential drop.

Catching the gaze of her friend, and the silent conversation between them the filly cast her eyes along the sea before cocking her head towards the left.

A little that way... She silently directed, before feeling a light tug on her mane.

Shooting her eyes up to Phoenix she could see the little bird and her wide eyes; wings slowly spreading out as if to taste the wind as it drifted through her colorful feathers. "Mama...I can feel it...Its pushing..." She said rather calmly, sparking eyes glancing to Meridah for a moment.

"See.... it will all be alright." Once again, for final measures she looked down to the colt in the waters; not that she didn't have doubts he couldn't make it in time. He was in perfect place now...there was nothing left but to..

"Fly." She breathed with a bright smile, feeling Phoenix flap her wings over and over and over again a the weight on her head began to dissipate. Before she knew it the breeze began to carry the little flapping bird away from her head as the filly found herself leaning out as if ready to catch her even if it meant being precariously over the edge. However she couldn't keep her eyes off as her breath had hitched with baited anxiety about it.

Instincts began to take hold of Phoenix as she pumped her wings faster and harder than she ever had before; holding her own in the air as the wind pushed her out further from Meridah. As her wide eyes began to shine with sense and away from the pure rush of instinct she looked down, then around as she hovered. "L-Look! I'm doing it!" She chirruped, before misflapping one wing not in sync as she gave a twirl and plummeted a number of yards down. With a small shriek she began to flap harder to stabilize herself, stopping a few meters above the sea.

With a nervous laughter as she could hear Meridah's loud breath of relief from above she continued her first flight...which was more of a hover still. "Papa! I'm doing it!!! Look at me!"
PostPosted: Sat Aug 16, 2014 11:32 pm

He moved left, following her silent gesture.
And waited, and watched- not long at all, but seconds seemed to hold so much more depth when waiting for something special.

His right eye twitched a little as Meridah leaned out over the cliff, but he returned his gaze carefully to the little bird in the sky. He could feel the blood rushing to his head as he tensed, ready, bobbing in the sea while his tail swirled whirlpools beneath him.
Confidence.

Pride swelled up and almost choked him as Phoenix flew, her little wings pu- N- OH! he gasped as she plummeted, her shriek piercing his soul, and... righted herself.
He breathed.

"Yes! You are!" He grinned, from relief and adrenaline, sparing a glance for Meridah before swimming in little circles beneath the smallest member of their makeshift family.

Perhaps this was how all parents feel. Nervous, excited, protective, exhausted and exhilarated all at the same time. "You are."
He in the waves, She on the cliff, Her in the sky.
An objectively odd little family, perhaps, but... his.

She was doing it.

Meridah sighed in the utmost of relief when their baby bird had begun to hover once more, if she knew any less she would have been trying to swallow her heart as it had jumped right up her throat when Phoenix plummeted. Her anxiety turned to a warm pride as the bird continued to flap, Voda making circles in the sea below her.

"I am! I am!" Phoenix cried out in joy, making slow little circles in the air to mimic her papa swimming below her. It was so amazing, this feeling of being up in an element she'd only watched from below. She'd often wondered why it was so hard to keep a hold of Voda and Meridah when she was on their backs...but now it all made sense. Phoenix was made to fly, not ride on the backs of her family forever. Her eyes looked over to an outcropping of rocks, wanting to make it there.

She knew she could do it.

"Are you watching? Watch me fly!" She jittered to the kelpie, before beginning to flap her wings as hard as she could to gain altitude and momentum; heading towards the rocks which little did she know was once her mother's hiding spot. All of a sudden the wind picked up and carried the little bird - truly allowing her to soar. Phoenix rose higher and higher as she drifted in the current like her papa in the sea; dipping once or twice just to get the hang of it.

Meridah had made her way quickly back down the cliff, her small hooves pounding the ground before dirt gave way to sand once more. She trotted all the way to the edge of the sea but once her hoof had submerged into the chilled waters her eyes widened and she shrunk back to fully dried beach. Although she wanted to be out there with them as Phoenix was experiencing the joys of flight; her destination rock reminded Meridah of her fears as they came rushing back even with just her hoof in the sea.

So, she was contented to watch from her post.

"You're doing it Phoenix! Go for it! Woooo!" Meridah hollered, quite loudly. At least her booming voice could reach them even if her body couldn't.
PostPosted: Mon Aug 18, 2014 6:14 pm

Voda grinned upwards, craning his neck as he swam to see their little girl fly while monitoring Meridah's progress on the shore.
If he had known that this was what awaited him today, he... well, he wouldn't have slept in certainly, because be probably wouldn't have slept at all last night. Most nights, despite the guaranteed excitement to come the following dawn, he could fall asleep by wearing himself out a little (how deep could he dive? how fast could he swim? what wondrous beauty lay in the depths of his familiar bay, where new currents washed in splendor with each tide?) or by convincing himself that, by falling asleep, tomorrow would come faster- even if it would only seem like it did, to his waking mind.
But, this...

Phoenix flew.

Still grinning, he turned back to Meridah, standing in the wa- on the shore. On dry land.
His smile fell a little, and he felt a sudden desire to go to her- to be with her- to comfort her. He looked back to the sky, at the little feathered wonder, and his smile rose again. Meridah was calling happily from the shore, proudly. She was strong. She was fine. She didn't need comforting; she was so... so her that he imagined she could be Fine through Anything.
But, sometimes... sometimes she needed a friend. And he'd be there, no matter what.
And besides, right now, he needed to be here... in the sea, for Phoenix.

"We're watching!" He called, his voice ringing out high and true.
A far cry from the shy little foal he had been, he had grown into his role of friend- BEST friend- and Father-figure eagerly and with earnest passion. He would always be a little hesitant, perhaps, but his words no longer came out halted and his throat no longer closed on sight of another soul.
They'd grown up together, his little family, and he wondered how far they'd go together.

There, near the rock he had first met Meridah (he glanced to her, still safe on the shore, at the thought), he watched Phoenix fly.
His heart soared with her.

"Oh, good girl!"

For once the little filly hadn't seen the concerned expression of Voda, perhaps because of the beautiful display of their flying little baby. Okay - Phoenix was displaying herself more of a prominent and beautiful bird than her weak and clumsy baby self. Perhaps in the end that'sWho kn how it would all happen for her and Voda too. They would grow up and truly fill the roll of Mama and Papa, and the three of them would go on grand adventures and be the best of friends forever.

Besides, forever was all there was now a days as time blurred as it did when one was having the best days of their lives.

There was no such lesson, the filly had yet to realize, that all good things did end eventually in her mind.

Ready to call once more out to them she was sent into a mental shock as a rouge wave, a bit bigger than the rest she'd avoided by standing just beyond its damp reach in the sand crashed into her legs nearly to her belly. Well, the crash of the wave sounded as loud as it did to her the day she fell into the sea from the very rock she was staring at. Her heart stopped in that moment and her breath hitched as if she'd begun to drown; but luckily she was on her element. Nearly tripping over herself she scampered up the beach in a frenzy, unable to even let out a cry with how much her nerves shook her body in a very realistic flashback of post traumatic horror.

The conscious knowledge of her friends were lost in the whole twenty seconds it all took place; she'd sprinted up the beach and into the bushes where she'd collapsed under the comforting shadows. She choked out a breath, the first since the wave as her chest expanded quickly to suck in as much oxygen as she could; quickly sorting through her mental realm to get herself out of this fog of a mess the water had drowned her thoughts in.

It didn't go completely unnoticed, as in unison of this happening Phoenix had reached the rock; landing and quickly shooting a glance back with the biggest smile to Voda and Meridah. Yet....Mama was running away - she'd missed her landing on the rock. "Ma....ma..?" She chirruped sadly, confused as she let go of the rock and with budding talent angled her wings and used the breeze to begin coasting to shore flying over Voda. "What's the matter with mama, she missed it Papa!" She asked, looking down to try and understand what had happened.
