Quote: Seb had jogged ahead of Chane, leaving a trail of hoofprints through the snow for the smaller stallion to follow after him. It was much easier for the larger Seb to break a path. It had been a few weeks now since the two had met, and they had only gotten closer. Seb found himself quote content to be by Chane's side. The smaller stallion gave him comfort. He still hadn't been able to find his sister, but he hadn't given up hope, and with Chane, he found the ache in his heart from missing her somehow hurt less.
He paused a little distance away beside a tree whose branches dipped low with heavy snow. A grin crossed his face at the sight of it, and he turned back to gauge how far away Chane was, and if he was paying attention. Quote: Chane hadn't been paying much attention to the whereabouts of the larger stallion at all. With a clear path before him, he was finding it rather easy to do something that he'd never been able to do before. Rather then having to fight for every step, he was simply enjoying the sight of snow covered landscape. He wasn't too far back though, just three body lengths away from his companion.
"Where do you want to go," he hadn't entirely forgotten about the search for Lily, but he was already past the point of trying too hard. "The pond is probably still frozen over... I can't wait for spring to come..." Quote: By the time Chane reached the tree, Seb had already ducked around it, effectively ending the path as he lept over the snow. The tree wasn't quite big enough to hide him, but the heavy snow laden branches helped, as did his white dappled coat. Carefully, he reached out to grab a branch with his teeth, pulling it back ever so slowly, waiting for Chane to realize he had disappeared. Quote: When Chane didn't hear a reply right away, he looked forward, curious as to what was taking Seb so long. The larger stallion was gone. He stepped dead in his tracks. Though he couldn't remember it, this wasn't the first time alone in the snow. The thought of suddenly being in that place again scared him, and he unconsciously took a step back.
"Sebastian?" the slight tremble was obvious in his tone. Quote: Seb was busy snickering to himself to notice that Chane had stepped back. He didn't realize that what he thought was a harmless prank might have much more of an effect on Chane. He tugged the branch a bit further, holding it tight between his teeth as he got ready to release it. He had it all planned out in his mind. The snow would fall on Chane's head, the stallion would be startled (and perhaps a little ticked), but then Seb would come out, help brush him off and they would have to snuggle to get warmed up. The plan seemed foolproof.
That is, until he heard the tremble in Chane's voice. The distress he was feeling was almost palpable, and it gave Seb pause, causing him to falter, and the branch flew out of his mouth before he could stop it. "Oh, s**t!" Quote: The rush of snow straight at him brought back glimpses of memories which he couldn't quite place. Snow rushing down on him, being buried, pain and fear. He turned to run but tripped on the snow at the edge of the narrow path and fell down hard. Fortunately, the snow was still only lightly packed and it didn't hurt nearly as much as it could have. He tried to pull himself up, but his hoofs kept slipping on the loose snow. Quote: Seb rushed out from around the tree, a distraught look on his face as he hurried over to Chane. "Chane, I am so so sorry, are you hurt? Are you okay? What happened?" His words came out in a rush as he sidled up beside Chane and pressing his side against him so he could lean his weight on Seb to get up. Once he was on his feet, Seb leaned over and pushed snow off Chane with his nose. Quote: Chane was still shaking when Seb got him up on his feet. The warm brush of Seb's nose against his own chilled flesh brought him back to reality.
"I... I don't know. What happened? Was there... Did the snow fall? Are we trapped?!" Quote: "No, no, we're not trapped." Seb felt him tremble and pressed himself closer against him. He wished he had wings, or perhaps a longer tail, something, anything that he could use to wrap around Chane to stop him from shaking.
"I'm so sorry. That was my fault. I was playing a trick, I was going to dump a little snow on your head as a game, but when I heard you call out my name, you sounded so scared and I-I let go of the branch by accident." He hung his head a bit, nosing at Chane's cheek in remorse. "It swung a lot harder than I meant for it to..." Quote: Even with Seb's warmth against him, he couldn't help but feel that something was coming for him.
"Can... we go somewhere warmer?" he didn't know if there was a place like that nearby, but something told him that if he could get somewhere warm that the danger would pass. He didn't really care about Seb's little trick. Wrapped up in his own thoughts and fears he couldn't even really register what Seb had told him about the branch and the accident of letting it go. "Fast... Please..."

Quote: "Of course, of course," Seb said hurriedly, glancing around, green eyes darting back and forth rapidly. "I uh. I think there's a cave up here a bit further. I noticed it when I was looking for Lily the other day. I don't know if anyone is in there, but it's worth a shot...?" He just really wanted to get Chane somewhere warm where he could apologize profusely some more. Quote: Chane nodded and pressed up a little closer to the larger stallion, "Lead the way..."
He knew that was going to ask for an explanation, but the more he thought about it the more he realized that he didn't have one. Every time he thought he was close to the truth the thought slipped away like a fall leaf down a stream. He glanced back over his shoulder, fully expecting something to be standing there behind them. There was nothing but white snow. Quote: Seb could tell that Chane was still rather spooked, but he had no idea why. It had just been a bit of snow, but he had reacted as if the snow was about to murder him. Yes, it had taken him by surprise, but... Seb shook his head. He would worry about that after he had gotten Chane somewhere warm and dry.
The cave was up ahead, not much further now. "There it is," he said, pointing it out to Chane. "Just up there." Quote: He barely responded, but he didn't hurry ahead of Seb to get to the cave. As much as he wanted the warmth, he didn't want to leave the safety of Seb's sides to reach it. Quote: Seb gave him another nuzzle, trying to be comforting. He was fairly certain his efforts were failing however, but he wouldn't give up. It was only a few more yards to the cave and they reached it's mouth. Seb hesitated at the opening, peering inside. It seemed empty, but one could never be too sure. "Just a second, I'm gonna go in and make sure there's no one else inside, okay?" Quote: Chane looked up at the larger stallion, the expression on his face made it clear that he was having an internal debate over whether Seb was going to leave him there in the snow and never return. Eventually though, he moved aside so Seb could satisfy his curiosity and be sure that the cave was indeed unoccupied.
"Don't be long..." Quote: The look on his face nearly broke Seb's heart. He gave Chane another reassuring nuzzle and promised he would be quick. "I'm just going to check around," he murmured as he stepped into the dimness of the cave. Just a quick check to make sure there was nothing in there that could hurt him, like a bear or even a skinwalker... Quote: Chane stood out in the snow, scanning the surrounding woods for any sign of danger while he waited for Seb to return. Being blind on one side he was forced to turn in spot to get a good view of the area. By the time Seb returned he had patted down a good amount of snow. Quote: Seb noticed, but he didn't comment. Instead he just smiled at Chane. "We're in luck! There's no one in the cave, but I think it was used as a breeding den not too long ago. There's a pretty big nest inside, so it shouldn't be too hard to get warmed up!" Quote: The moment Seb reappeared in the cave entrance Chane turned to head toward him. He didn't care if they were going in or not, he just wanted to be close to the larger stallion. When Seb told him that they could indeed go inside though, he sighed in relief. "Thank you, thank you," he said, to Seb and to whatever other spirits may be listening. The thought of Seb asking for an explanation had gone from his mind. Right now he just wanted safety and warmth.
Once inside he stayed right beside Seb, letting him lead the way into the depths.

Quote: Seb led him into the cave. They went right to the back where a nest had been made out of twigs and leaves and scraps of fabric the parents had scavenged. Seb was pretty impressed with himself at finding such a great place so easily. "Here we go! Doesn't that look comfy?" Quote: Chane nuzzled him thankfully, then stepped into the nest. He didn't lay down right away though, wanting Seb to join him before he got comfortable. Quote: Seb followed him without much of a thought towards it and waited for Chane to settle down before he lay down next to him, keeping his side pressed against Chane's.
"There," he said after a moment. "Is that better?" Quote: Chane tucked his head over Seb's forelegs. It really did feel better in here. The air was warmer if even only because they were sheltered from the wind, and between Seb's body heat and the comfort of the nest he could just feel the heat melting away all his fears.
He'd meant to answer with a yes, but instead he found himself murmuring, "Let's just live here..." Quote: The bigger stallion let out a laugh at that, leaning over to give Chane's cheek an affectionate snuggle. "It is cozy here," he agreed. "And it would be nice for the two of us to have more time alone..." He greatly appreciated the home that Aurianna had given him while he searched for his sister, but sometimes it was too crowded for him. He was used to it just being him and Lily. Quote: "It is getting pretty cramped in Auri's cave... and it would be nice to not have to walk through the cold just to spend some time alone with you," he lifted his head slightly to nuzzle Seb's chest. "I'm getting tired of snow." Quote: Seb smiled at the nuzzle, and bent his head down to return the same. It was just so nice to be next to Chane and cuddle like this. He wasn't quite sure what that made them, but he just knew he liked it and didn't want it to stop.
At the mention of the snow, he sighed and glanced back at the mouth of the cave. The opening was small, but it was big enough to see the snow piled around it. "So am I," he murmured. The longer the winter went, the more worried he was that Lily wasn't okay. Quote: Chane caught the disappointment in his tone and pulled back.
"Is everything alright?" he looked out toward the entrance of the cave. "Look, I'm sorry about... what happened back there..." Quote: "Hm, yeah," Seb started to say, but stopped when Chane brought up the incident. "Yeah," he said, the confusion clearly written on his face. "What did happen back there?" Quote: He tensed up, "Um... I don't know..."

Quote: "You looked so scared," Seb murmured, nuzzling him. Quote: "I was..." he said, relaxing a bit as Seb touched him. "I thought I was being buried... It was so strange. I don't remember ever being in an avalanche or anything..." Quote: Seb ran his nose down Chane's neck. "I'm sorry. I was only trying to have a bit of fun." Quote: He shivered, then carefully lay his head down on Seb's legs again.
"It's alright. You didn't know... I didn't even know..." Quote: Seb rested his head over Chane's neck. "I'm still sorry." He heaved a little sigh, his ears flicking about lazily. "I wish there was a cave closer to Aurianna's that we could call our own." Quote: "You know, considering how deep the snow is, we didn't take long to get here. And we weren't really going in a straight path." Quote: "That is true..." Seb lifted his head. "Would you want to stay here then? With me?" Quote: Chane looked around at the cave, "You're... sure it's abandoned?" Quote: "It seems so." He looked around as well, chewing on his lip thoughtfully. "We should probably make sure... I could come back and check a few days before we make a decision?" Quote: He looked up at Seb, "I wouldn't mind just waiting around to see..."

Quote: A smile spread right across Seb's face. "Yeah?" he asked, pressing his nose to Chane's fondly. "I can't say I'd mind that either." Quote: Chane laughed, rubbing his nose against Seb's big, soft, velvety muzzle.
"Sebastion... what are we doing?" Quote: Seb pulled his nose back a bit so he could look into Chane's eyes, a bit confused by the question. "Hm? We're lying here in a cave?" Quote: His eyes went wide, "Oh well... That's not really what I..." he cleared his throat, trying to get his bearings. "I mean we're... you know..." he fell silent, then, "Oh... nevermind." Quote: Seb's brows knitted as he tried to piece together what Chane had actually meant to ask. He frowned. Obviously he had taken that question much too literally. "No..." he said. "Please tell me what you meant." Quote: Chane's jaw pressed tightly closed, and he shook his head. The question had slipped out. He'd wanted to know what they were doing, two stallions spending all their time together, getting a cave together. Seb liked him, he knew that. He liked Seb too, but stallions just didn't do this. But... now that he thought about what he'd meant it was just far too embarrassing to rephrase it. Quote: His brows knitted tighter together. Chane wasn't going to tell him, but Seb could tell if the question wasn't answered, things from here on out would be different, and he didn't want that. His gaze darted over Chane's face, then down upon the two of them, and back up to Chane's face, wheels turning in his head. It took a few moments, but finally he thought he had it.
"Do you mean what we're doing here together? Like this?" Quote: His cheeks reddened, and he looked away, but he nodded. That was what he'd meant.
"I shouldn't have said it. I didn't mean too..." Quote: No," Seb said quickly. "It's good that you did. It's been on my mind too." He hesitated a second, but then leaned forward again to nuzzle Chane. "I don't know, to be honest. I just know that I really like you, and I really enjoy being around you. I don't want anything to change." Quote: He nodded with a sigh, "So... you're as confused as I am?"

Quote: Seb was quiet for a moment, thoughtful. "Well, I know that I really like you. I'm not confused about that, not at all. I know that I don't want to leave your side. I care about you, and I worry about you, and all I want to do is to keep you safe and make you happy. I'm not confused about any of that." Quote: "So..." he wasn't sure what answer he wanted to hear for the next question. But he knew he would know what he wanted to hear when he heard Seb's answer. "Like... a big brother?" Quote: "What?" The corners of Seb's mouth turned down. "No!" Quote: He flinched ever so slightly, and looked away. "I'm sorry..." Quote: "No, no, no, I mean I don't think of you like a brother!" Quote: "Then, what am I?" he asked, still staring at the floor. Quote: "My..,my...friend?" As he said the word, Seb knew it wasn't right. Chane wasn't just a friend to him. He would never be.
"No," he said quickly, his voice rising a bit. "You're more than that. Much more." Quote: "I think that's why I'm so confused..." Quote: "Why...?" Seb swallowed hard and looked down at the floor himself. "You don't feel the same?" Quote: "I'm not sure. I think I do? Maybe? I've never had a brother... and I haven't had many friends..."

Quote: "Right..." Seb pawed at the nest of leaves with his hoof, eyes still glued to the floor. Quote: "I like you... but... it feels... I don't know," he squirmed a bit. This had gotten awkward fast. Quote: Seb was afraid to ask what Chane meant like that, but he knew he had to know. "It feels weird?" he asked quietly, holding his breath as he waited for Chane's answer. He couldn't think of a time when he'd been this scared. Quote: He tried to answer, but nothing came out. So instead, he got up and stepped out of the nest. "The only... anything I've ever felt close too is Aurianna." He started pacing back and forth, "But then you show up and it's just something else all together. and..." He stopped, "I don't know!" Quote: Seb flinched away when Chane got up and moved away from him, as if he'd been slapped. He hung his head, ears lying flat. "I don't know either. It's confusing for me too." Quote: Chane glance over him, and when he saw that Seb's ears were back flat he took an involuntary step backwards. "I'm sorry...?" Quote: Seb frowned and shook his head, looking up at Chane. "You don't have anything to be sorry about," he said. "I just... I don't know what to say." Quote: Seb shifted a bit awkwardly. "Come back and lie down next to me again?" Quote: Chane hesitated a moment, then relaxed and moved back over to the nest.
"You're... something... to me?" he offered.

Quote: Seb laughed a little at that, and some of the tension went out of the air. "Well, that's something," he agreed. Quote: Chane laughed, still confused but far less uneasy. He approached Seb, then leaned down. Since he was so much smaller than the other stallion he didn't have to bend far before his forehead was pressed up against Seb's.
"I've had so many unknowns in my life. I don't want... you... to be an unknown too..." Quote: Seb looked back up at him, his expression growing soft. "I don't want to be an unknown in your life," he murmured. "I want you to know everything about me." Quote: "I... want to know everything about you." Quote: Seb smiled at that and gestured for Chane to lay back down. "Sit down and I'll tell you everything you want to know."
