Aquamarine was careless. He hadn't always been, but then he used to have a reason to be cautious. He used to have a family, and friends—few as they might have been. Now his family was gone, and his friends... well, one of them was responsible for his family's death (of that he was fairly certain), and given how the last few years had transpired Aquamarine wasn't completely sure if he still had the other's loyalty.

So he went out alone. Frequently. He wasn't entirely sure what he was looking for, or if he was looking for anything at all. Companionship, maybe. Or another fight to take his mind off of things. The mindlessness that often came with completing his duty. He could fight the Senshi and Knights and pretend as if everything was their fault. In a way it was. If they'd never come to this world, if they'd leave and go take their place among the stars instead, maybe Earth wouldn't seem like such hell.

His boots scuffed through the dirt as he went, heedless of his forested surroundings as he ambled through trees without any direction. He made no attempt to conceal his presence. He hardly cared if others heard him shuffling his way through the undergrowth. He didn't care for much these days; after five years of this he couldn't even care for himself.

So he courted danger. He sought it as his only salvation. It was the only thing that gave life meaning anymore, the only thing to prove that he was still alive. Go out, fight, kill another enemy, accept the congratulations for a job well done, and then go home to a small, empty apartment and pretend as if any of it mattered, all the while knowing that eyes were always watching.

Aquamarine sneered, kicking at a bush and scaring a harmless rodent up into a tree.

With what little he had left, Ashur was about as careful as one in his position could afford to be. The loss of his family was hard, harder still when he witnessed those closest to him suffer through the same ordeal, but despite the desire to numb himself to it all, to completely throw himself into the cause, even lose himself in it...he knew he couldn't afford to be careless. There was a time when he had; when he let his anger, fueled by all the tragedy around him, take him over and blind him. He'd gotten too close to teetering right on over to the other side too many times, and for a while he was alright with that. But now?

Now, he managed to get past the haze of grief and got his rage under control enough to realize that there was still plenty to live for. Still plenty to fight for.

But he struggled to keep those in focus everyday. When he was out on patrols or in the city or watching civilians suffering the war that they, in large part, have no real part in. When he suffered the nightmares and the bouts of depression that gripped him in the darkest hours. Sometimes when he was just by himself...

Ashur meandered through some area in the thick of a forest, mind shrouded with both sad and pleasant memories that were tangling together into bittersweet reminiscences. He was focused enough to avoid running into trees or tripping over roots, but otherwise his eyes were distant and he just...wasn't really there. He wasn't even sure exactly where he was, just that it was a way's from home. Far enough to keep anyone from actually going out and looking for him, anyway; he'd warned Urda enough times about that.

He would have been content to keep right on wandering, too, had a rustle and was squeak not startled him from his thoughts. Years of living in constant alert kept his reaction time short, and his staff was already on hand as he approached with caution, his lip curling when he sensed Chaos nearby. Actually...he could kind of hear it, too, and it sounded like it was coming closer. After he got to listen a bit more closely, he noticed that the sound was not unlike lazy teens that dragged their feet across the floor, and he had to fight back a snort.

"Might as well be passing by with squeaking duck slippers, don't you think?" he called in a voice loud enough to catch the attention of anyone nearby.

Aquamarine hadn't missed the tingling of an Order aura. Not completely. He simply hadn't cared, and let it draw closer with minimal concern. It was just there on the edge of his senses—a silent warning, and one he ignored with a recklessness that once seemed alien to him.

Eyes that had previously been locked on the ground lifted to rest upon the not-so-sudden arrival of a Knight. Not one of the Royal ones, and not one of the disturbingly glowing ones either, but a regular Knight, rare as Aquamarine thought they were these days. The war seemed to bring continuous changes among each side. Increases in power, strange new forms, new events to add another layer onto a war that already seemed so convoluted.

Once, he was told, it had been much simpler.

“Quiet, Knight,” Aquamarine demanded, guarded, though his expression appeared confrontational enough to make his lack of fear apparent. “I see no reason for you to concern yourself with me, unless you come courting danger.”

His hand went to the hilt of the dagger strapped to his left hip, gripping it warningly.

“Think yourself stronger if you will, but I've killed enough of you in my day,” he said, and failed to add that the felling of those stronger than himself had often been with the assistance of his companions.

Ashur lifted a curious brow at the Negaverse agent as he moved toward the sound and eventually into view of the other, his approach still slow and somewhat cautious as he got a little closer. He fought the urge to roll his eyes at the other's comment; he could damn well approach anyone he liked for whatever reason he fancied, and particularly a Captain. Not to say that he undermined the abilities of the opposite faction--he'd seen first-hand the damage they could do in battle and knew better than that--but it was a bit irritating to hear that kind of talk come from someone that was supposedly beneath him, rank-wise.

"Don't get your panties all up in a bunch," he shot back, his grip on his staff tightening in response to the other's silent warning. "I'm no more interested in kicking your a** than you are in hiding your presence in this forest." He wasn't in a particular mood to deal with that kind of mess, though if his hand was forced then he would defend himself. "Not yet, anyway."

He nodded his head in a gesture to regard the city he assumed was behind the Captain, somewhere past the forest they were in. "Don't suppose you're out here on orders from your higher ups? Give 'em my thanks for screwing all of us over, if you ever get the chance."

Aquamarine bristled at the comment concerning his “panties,” eyes narrowing as his expression fell into a sneer. It was a silly thing to be defensive over these days (hell, it'd always been rather silly, he could admit) and pointless to become hung up on, but even now he remained concerned by what he projected to others, and what they perceived from those projections. He despised any insinuation of femininity, even those made in jest.

“Watch yourself,” he threatened. His hand did not yet leave the hilt of his dagger.

His gaze passed briefly over the Knight but found him unrecognizable. That was not so surprising. Aquamarine did not make it a habit to become overly familiar with his enemies. He did not generally care to know their names, or anything about their histories beyond what was necessary for him to know when it came to facing them in battle. He had no personal vendettas against any of them. They were nameless people. Often faceless as well. He attacked them, killed them, because it was expected that he do so. He was an agent of the Negaverse, and his prominence within the hierarchy depended upon the elimination of the Senshi and Knights.

But it was wearying. If he cared little for who they were as individuals, he cared just as little for the threat they posed to his own side. He went through the motions because it was all he had left to do. It was either that or be killed, and he hadn't quite descended to the level where he thought death would be the better option.

Not yet, at least.

“My orders are of no concern of yours,” Aquamarine said, “nor do my superiors care for your thanks. Relay the message to them yourself if you'd like. I'm sure they'd appreciate the opportunity to destroy another one of you. Only spare me the self-pity. You're not the only fools they've screwed over, and you won't be the last.”

Ashur laxed in his stance somewhat, already tiring of the threats coming from the Captain. He wasn't in any particular mood or state of mind to be the one to pick fights with the other side. In all honesty, his main concern for the most part was to take care of what was left of his family, and that usually meant staying out of fights and that kind of danger if he could help it. Still, he kept his staff at the ready (just in case) and heaved what could be considered a bored-sounding sigh. "Yeah, yeah," he started, then snorted.

"Your orders are every concern of mine," he went on to say, "Considering every order you follow usually ends with a death of some kind. Civilian, senshi, knights...I doubt your bosses even bother to try and tell the difference anymore." Ash clenched his jaw briefly, his mind flashing back to his own losses, and to his friends' losses...

He hated to really admit it, but he knew that Negaverse agents faced an equal amount of tragedy in all of this though. After he'd regained his better judgement and a bit of perspective he could tell that some lost the will to fight and disappeared if they could, some charged into battle hoping it'd be their very last, some just became empty shells after some harrowing event or another. They all suffered, both sides.

So he laxed even more. "It isn't self-pity. It's pent-up frustration. You try getting some brainless Negaverse agents 'just following orders' on your tail trying to kill you day in and day out on top of living in squalor, plus all the injured and the dying and the dead everywhere to remind you of what'll happen if you don't keep on fighting." The Squire jabbed an accusing finger at the other at that point, assuming that the Captain was speaking about himself at the tail end of his statement. "If your bosses screwed you over, then why the hell are you still on their side, huh?"

“What other side is there?” Aquamarine countered.

He had no desire to share any of his own tragedies with this knight. Certainly it wasn't any of his business, and in truth he had no interest in the Knight returning the favor. He didn't want to know his enemies. These days they were more prey than enemies, he could admit. Aquamarine's true enemies were around him far more frequently—his own allies. They held more power to do him harm than this Knight or any of the others.

Once, twice, Aquamarine had considered taking the plunge and making the switch. Years ago, defecting to the White Moon couldn't have been any worse than remaining where he was. That wasn't entirely the case now. Defecting at a time when the Negaverse had control of the city (and, indeed, the world) would only be a waste of another life. Better to go through the motions than cross over and attain a position of certain death.

“You think I don't know what they're capable of,” the Captain argued, “or that they won't follow through? Trust me, we all know that better than you do. They're fairly good at keeping their own in line, and to be honest I still value my life too much to throw my lot in with a group of people who'll only end up dead at the end of it all. I don't care about anyone's reasons for fighting this war, not the Negaverse's or whatever White Moon garbage you all pledge fealty to. The only thing I care about is being alive at the end of it.”

He paused a moment and wondered, 'But what do I even have to live for?' but kept those thoughts from the Knight. Such doubts weren't any of his business.

Besides, he did have Seraphinite, steeped in mockery and bickering as their friendship had always been. And Jet...

Well, that was a complicated matter.
