This RP is backdated to July 27th

It wasn’t, like, a fancy elopement or anything like that. People tended to associate eloping with running away to the Caribbean and Tallulah looked forward to a whole lifetime of explaining that, no, they did not do anything quite so extravagant, because she and Nick were students and on a budget. All they’d done was driven to Norfolk, stood in line at the courthouse, and then checked into a beachfront Best Western.

It was not fancy, but it was sweet, and they bought cheap champagne and drank it out on the balcony.

“Kaatje’s going to murder me,” said Tallulah, and tried to make that the only time she thought about the wedding they’d actually been planning the entire weekend.

They arrived back in Destiny City to find an amnesiac Avalon Page strutting around Florence Court. Tallulah pulled Nick into their apartment and locked the door.

“What the hell,” she said, rubbing her temples. “We go away for a week and she purifies and doesn’t even remember our names.” But the ring was on her finger and she didn’t particularly regret anything, just the sheer irony of it all. “We do exactly what she wants and she stops caring.”

As far as reactions to learning who their new neighbor was, Nick thought Tallulah’s was pretty good. He personally felt like he couldn’t breathe.

She was upstairs. She was literally upstairs, right now, with Finn, where if anything happened--where no one could keep him safe from her. Just a wall away. Just a literal wall. Corruption didn’t work that way, he didn’t think, you couldn’t fake a purification like that, he was being irrational but he couldn’t not be. She was here. In this building. In his home.

He didn’t realize he was shaking until Tallulah pulled him into their apartment and locked the door behind them, but even once he’d noticed, he couldn’t make it stop. “Purification doesn’t work that way,” he managed, crossing his arms over his chest and tucking his hands away, where he couldn’t see them. “You don’t forget everything. Why did she forget everything? That’s not how it works. What if it’s a trick.”

Tallulah could see a panic attack coming, and she wasn’t sure whether she ought to drag Nick over to the couch and cuddle him up or give him some space. “I don’t know,” she said, trying to keep her head clear, since she wasn’t sure she could count on him to do the same. “Maybe it’s weird because she went back and forth. Or - we don’t know how it happened.” Much as she wished she could pretend to be an expert, she had no idea - and that was intensely frustrating.

Nick’s withdrawal became too much, and she put a careful hand on his shoulder and tried to move him to the couch. “Finn and Kaatje wouldn’t let her be here if they weren’t absolutely sure she was okay,” she said, willing herself to believe it. Kaatje drove a hard line when it came to corruption, and when it came to the safety of Florence Court. She’d never let someone she hadn’t personally vetted in on its secrets.

The facts all seemed faintly absurd to Tallulah, anyway. Avalon didn’t remember Nick, Nick didn’t actually remember her - so where was all his anxiety coming from, besides just unspecified post-traumatic dread? But she needed to be sensitive. “We’ve just got to trust Kaatje on this,” she said, tucking her legs up under her. “She knows what she’s doing.”

He leaned into Tallulah’s touch, just a little, and let himself be moved. It would be so much easier to be an adult about this if he could just articulate why he was so scared of Avalon Page--even seeing her smiling civilian face, knowing she was Vanya Morgenstern, aroused this reaction to him. How was he going to live in the same house as her? On the couch, he gathered Tallulah into his arms and buried his face in her hair. It smelled sweet and floral and he could feel her breathing. Her chest rose and fell, and her hands rubbed tiny circles on his back. She was safe. He took a deep breath, and then another.

“I trust Kaatje,” he said. “I trust Finn. I don’t trust--I don’t trust her.” That sweet-toned alto pitch. What do you do with a drunken sailor? He must have stood stock-still in the hallway, staring at the girl--the woman--dusting the lobby entertainment center, for minutes. The song she sang had been one of violence. Slice his throat with a rusty cleaver, shoot him in the heart with a loaded pistol, feed him to the hungry rats for dinner--

That voice sent some kind of dread shivering down his spine, nameless and cold as winter. Even thinking about it made him want to gag. He took another deep breath. “I’m not sorry we got married,” he said, half-changing the topic. “I’m still happy. I wish she wasn’t here, that’s all.”

Tallulah nodded, doing her best to understand. Avalon was Avalon, and quick as she was to forgive and forget, Nick’s experiences with her ran far deeper than hers. Avalon, after all, had never personally hurt Tallulah, only threatened her… and it had all turned out alright… and she’d been under the influence of Chaos at the time…

“I’ll go talk to Kaatje,” she said, continuing to rub small, gentle circles on his back. “I’ll explain everything to her and see what she and Finn think should happen.” Kicking Avalon out of the building was probably not an option, so…

The singing definitely had to stop, she thought with a shiver. God. Where had a recent amnesiac even learned that song?

She was so sweet, she was. He loved her hair, her hands, her scent. With a sigh he let himself rest his forehead on her shoulder. “I love you,” he said. “I’m sorry.”

Outside, he heard a snippet of song. King Arthur, all those things, and still so creepy and quiet. It raked nails up the inside of his skin, as beautiful and clear as it was. “Finn won’t let her go,” he said, kissing along her jawline, knotting his hands in her hair to make them stop shaking. “You know he won’t do it. He’s wanted her to purify for so long. And here she is. Gift-wrapped. He can make her whatever he wants her to be, you saw how she looked at him.”

The same look he saw in his own eyes sometimes, during the bad times, it was there in Avalon’s. Arkady’s. “He can take the parts of her he remembers, and stitch them together to make someone who will do what he says and who loves him back. A perfect copy of his Tate.” He didn’t mean to be bitter. He owed Finn everything. But why did Finn have to bring her here? Where Nick lived, and slept, and--

“I’m being unkind,” he said.

It was definitely a regrettable situation, Tallulah thought, rubbing the back of Nick’s head soothingly. Of course he was right - Finn would sooner see himself evicted than let Avalon go, and he was sort of vital to Florence Court’s operation. So were they, in a way, and she doubted Kaatje would willingly turn them out on the street, but… She just didn’t know where the balance was, and that was frustrating. Maybe she’d just have to go pick Kaatje’s brain later and see how she felt about everything.

“That’s creepy,” she said finally, with regards to Nick’s remarks about Finn basically brainwashing Avalon into - what? Some kind of sex doll? Not that the minutiae of Finn Derouen’s sexual activities were any of her concern, but that just didn’t seem like him. “I don’t think he’d do that. I don’t think he’d want to do that. Tate didn’t love him like that. She was…”

Prickly, she thought. Or she had been to Tallulah, although that was more a personal matter than anything else.

“I’m not going to argue with that,” she said, to his copping to being unkind, “She put you through hell and you’ve got every right to not want to be friends with her. But whatever Finn’s trying to accomplish, I’d really like to think he’s got more common sense than to basically inflict stockholm syndrome on someone.”
PostPosted: Sun Aug 10, 2014 11:31 pm

“It’s not even stockholm syndrome if she chooses to stay and chooses to stay,” said Nick. He wasn’t entirely sure Kaatje wouldn’t just find somewhere else to put Avalon; surely she had some friends from when she was Order side. Like… who, though? Stories had been related to him about the things General Avalon had done. Not the things relevant to him, but the things that she had done to others. And he’d known. About the murder. “How can Finn even look at her,” he demanded suddenly. “She killed his father. In cold blood. Not because she knew she was gunning for Babylon’s father, she only knew he was Finn’s, didn’t she? She’s psychotic. She’s completely insane.”

His voice was muffled, from the angle at which he’d hidden his face, and he made a valiant attempt to pull Tallulah onto his lap and hold her close, protective and terrified. She was one floor up. One floor up and one wall away. “If she sings at night,” he said, trying to take deep breaths. In through his nose, out through his mouth, inhaling for a shorter period than your exhale period activated the parasympathetic nervous system, he had to calm down. His chest tightened and he couldn’t catch his breath as he imagined that voice, that beautiful awful voice, leaking through the wall into his bedroom. “She hurt me,” he said. “She hurt me. I don’t remember how but I remember I was terrified and that she laughed and she made me--she hurt me, Tallulah, and I don’t know if I can forgive her.”

He was a piece of literal s**t.

Nick was right - it was weird. Tallulah didn’t think she’d be able to find it in her heart to forgive someone who had brutally murdered one of her parents. She didn’t think most people would be able to, and she didn’t think there was anything particularly wrong with that. “I don’t know,” she said, finding no explanation to give to Nick. He was outraged, and rightfully so. She’d been so worried about Arkady falling into some sort of stockholm syndrome that she’d overlooked that Finn might be the one being entrapped.

“If she sings at night, then we will sleep in the guest room and I’ll talk to Finn tomorrow about ground rules,” she said, slipping her hands back into his hair and rubbing his temples. “You don’t have to forgive her,” said Tallulah, glancing towards the door. She couldn’t hear anyone in the lobby, so Finn and Arkady must have gone back upstairs.

“Finn’s got his own weird moral code,” she sighed, “And he’s going to do whatever he wants to do and I don’t think anyone’s going to be able to convince him otherwise. But I agree with you. It’s weird and it’s unsettling and it doesn’t totally sit right with me.”

She was so smart and so reasonable, he thought. His wife. A smile ghosted over his face for a heartbeat, and he kissed her tenderly on the cheek. Maybe the panic attack would come back later--he could still feel it, in the tightness of his chest and the shaking of his hands--but he was alright for now. “I suppose--I suppose if our situations were reversed, and it was you coming back to me, I would be the same,” he said, pulling her closer into his lap.

They were close to him, here. If she tried anything on Finn, they could hear, and they could get to him before it was too late. And… it went the other way, too. “I’m sorry,” he said. “Just about ruined a good weekend there.”

Tallulah smiled and breathed a shallow sigh of relief. She wasn’t sure exactly how much she’d managed to defuse the situation, but she was feeling a bit better about it. He was holding her close, and his and his breathing was getting a bit more even - but it was still shallow, and she could feel his hands shake on her arms.

“Well, you didn’t,” she said, slipping her hands down to cup his chin. She kissed him gently on the mouth, lingering in effort to distract him further from his distress. “And,” she said, leaning her forehead against Nick’s, “The weekend isn’t quite over yet.”
