Akhenanten paused and looked back over his shoulder at his son. The younger lion was some distance behind them thought still plenty close to be within calling range. He seemed to be tired and limping slightly, though when Akenaten had questioned him, he had simply said he had got kicked by the wildebeest from their last hunt and he was fine. Akhenaten knew he was lying, but he also knew it was no dangerous omission. Arienkhut had become a quieter, more solitary male as he had grown and often vanished for hours or days at a time before returning to their little group. Akhenaten wasn’t about to question him, it was just their nature as adult males. Ideally, Arienkhut would have left to start his own family by now, but after the dissolution of their home pride and the subsequent travailing across the no-mans-land that was the roguelands, Akhenaten knew the younger male stuck with them both from loyalty and for protection. Not protection for either himself or his son, but for his mate, Lealia. Two big males were better than one in this land of no rules and no honour, and neither father nor son wanted harm to come to her.
So, Arienkhut’s disappearances were his way of giving both of them some breathing room on this trek. And as such, his father was not going to make things more awkward by bring it to attention. Certainly, it would do no good but possibly worry his beloved. Turning back after scanning the horizon -such as it was for they were now deep in a thickly wooded forest and visibility was restricted by the massive dark trunks of the ancient trees- Akhenaten glanced down at his mate pacing along at his side.
“We should stop for a bit. I am catching strange scents ahead and would like to scout it out.”
This had becomea habit for them as the forest had grown thicker.. Akhenaten was basically the point guard, and when he felt something was off he would go ahead and check it out while his son stayed with Lealia, surreptitiously as her guard.

Laelia looked around with a furrowed brow, trying not to worry to much about where they would live now that their pride had fallen to ruin. The thought still hurt even after all this time and travel. As she traveled along with her mate and her son in between them both a smile took over her as she thought of her two males. As long as she had them, that was all that matter. Home is where family was. Picking up her pace and made sure to keep up paw for paw with her Akhe. His voice rumbled and made her look upward into his face.
"Alright dear. That's fine." She turned towards her son. "You should help your father and see what is around the area." She worried about them constantly and not having realized her mate felt the need to protect her as well. "Please be careful." She nuzzled into his neck. "Hopefully someone will be kind enough to tell us where we have landed ourselves."

Akhenanten looked down at his beloved, silver eyes softening at the worried expression she wore. Pausing to lean down he nuzzled her gently, burying his muzzle into the fur of her cheek and simply inhaling her scent. How he had been so lucky to be entrusted with her, he had no idea. She was his everything, she was the one thing that had carried him through the loss of his pride, a loss that would otherwise have destroyed him. He would never truly deserve her but he was content to try for the rest of his life.
Smiling into her worried gaze he touched her nose with his gently. “Do not fret my love, nothing will ever get me. I have you to come back to.” He gave her one last lingering touch, cheek to cheek, before he turned and slipped away through the trees. Arienkhut moved up to stand beside his mother as the older lion moved away. Smiling down at her, for he had matured to a height closer to his large sire, he licked her forelock playfully, teasing her lightly as was his habit when he wanted to distract her.
“You know he will skin me alive if I leave you here. Besides, no one is actually close, they have just passed this way. He’ll see what he can see and come back to tell us what happens next.” He gave her a cheeky wink. “Besides, no one would ever take on Papa, he’s too damn big and too old. I doubt there is any lion close by that could best him.” He grinned at her, knowing Akhen would at least protest the ‘old’ comment, if only to defend his beloved ladylove. If there was one thing he was worried about, it was his dying off and leaving her, as he had been a mature lion when they met. Akhen rarely ever spoke about his past, saying he was more than content with his present.
