General debriefing: There has been the stirring of something that scares even the locals: a rumour has it that in the evening, the lights turn on several of the odd pod-like buildings. Music can be heard from within before the light flickers off. This investigation must happen, due to this claim, in the evening after dark.
* C class difficulty level (must have a team of three, at least one of them must be an intermediate trainee)

MECHANICS

* MECHANICS: RP assembling a team, as necessary, before heading towards the Lighthouse portal to request a portal to Survey Mission 4C. Once there, roll a 100-sided dice and match the roleplay to the results below, as well as any reactions. Players can continue rolling until any of the players roll a INSANITY ENCOUNTER, in which case the BATTLE PHASE begins. See below for battle phase mechanics.
1- 20: The darkness combined with the fog make it extremely difficult to navigate. As you move your flashlight against the ground all you see is the crackled pavement, the pods obscured from sight -

- As a skeletal face carved right into the cement leers at you -

- And disappears. It was just your imagination... right?
21 - 40: Tattered pieces of fabric seem to be hanging from a few smashed windows. Upon further investigation you realize it is actually strips of skin peeled off some hapless creature.
41 - 60: You take a look at the pods again. They look normal enough, though none of them have the odd flickering light. Well that's a relief. A strange jarring noise interrupts you and as you look back, the order of the pods have changed, from location to colour.
61 - 80: You hear music playing in the background, a sort of wailing, foreign music. It seems to be coming from right above you, but nothing is there. Only you can hear it.
81- 100: BOSS ENCOUNTER:
- As you continue walking down the sidewalk you hear a large crack, followed by another. A strange gas explodes from underneath, making you extremely dizzy, as you cough to figure out what is going on, fighting for air now. You have exposed your entire team to a hallucinogen, making everything more terrifying than ever as your vision swims and hops uncontrollably and your hearing becomes muted. Something creaks, groans, lurches underneath you, but is that your imagination?

- BOSS MECHANICS: This boss is a mob that has collective 100 HP. Every time you attack it (following the general battle rules), you TAKE 8 damage. AS you can't really see the boss, most of it will have to be dependent on what you can see, if anything at all, from strange faceless figures lurching, half-hopping towards you to the smiling dead coming back and swiping at you. Make sure to tally the boss's total HP (the damage you did to it) at the bottom of your post as well as your total HP and the damage you did that round. If the boss's HP hits 0, you have defeated it, and your team can now take the portal back.

Noemi had just gotten back from the Sahara, only to be asked for another survey mission. The mist huntress had barely time to shower and clean herself up before she was back at the lighthouse with another team.

Judging from the roster though, she'd be in good hands. Evan, who was a sun and Finn, who was a moon! She was secretly very happy that she knew both of the men.

And slight nervous since the last time she had seen Finn, was when she 'accidentally' got hurt on the stairs with the wardrobe. She hadn't even gotten a chance to apologize or get him a gift for helping her.

She was nervously playing with her coat, waiting for the other two to get here so they could do this.

Finn was never really sent out on many external missions, except for the odd patrol around the haunted house, and he pretty much preferred life that way. However, that also seemed to be a trend from before, when he'd kept his head down and tried his best to not be noticed, lest he end up in situations just like this one. Now, of course, he was trying to make a little more of a name for himself from within the Moon division, asking for more responsibility and training in the infirmary, while also working on his in field medical training by practicing on hunters who were willing to spar in an area where their shields could actually break. It was...nice, in a way, to have finally given himself some purpose other then just being a human meat shield.

But he wasn't sure how to feel about this. In one sense, it could prove to be more useful training to put himself through. On the other hand, however, he could just end up dead instead, and he was pretty sure he was not ready for that quite yet.

In any case, it wasn't as if he had much choice. So, packing for the trip, making sure to bring along any supplies that might be useful, Finn made his way to the lighthouse, spotting Noemi as he approached and giving the woman one of his typical cold smiles and a small nod of his head, his eyes landing on her jacket.

"I see you've been promoted. Congratulations." He sounded sincere enough as he moved up to stand beside her.

It was as if the wardrobe incident had never happened at all.

When Evan got orders to go out to some probably-haunted resort in the middle of the night to see what was up, he didn't question them. If anything, he was glad for the break in routine. It wasn't like he often slept for more than a few hours at a night anyway, so he might as well make himself useful.

He was less than pleased about who he was being sent out with, though. He didn't know Finn at all, but out in the field was the last place he wanted to see Noemi. She was still far too green in his opinion--and far too skittish--to be much more than a liability in the field. Even so, Evan was glad that he would be there to keep an eye on her. He hadn't forgotten his promise to Stormy; he would keep Noemi safe.

He noticed that the other two were already at the lighthouse when he arrived. Evan dropped a hand on Noemi's shoulder and squeezed it in greeting, nodding amicably at who he assumed was Finn. "Evening," he said. "We ready to go?"

Noemi flushed at Finn's observation, glad to have the moon along as well embarrassed/pleased? that he noticed her hard work!

"Th...Thank you." She ran a hand through her hair, mussing it up in the back and smiling at the ground. It felt good to have someone congratulate her, and notice that she was making the ranks. Especially if it was Finn, because he was a higher ranked hunter then her. And he had been here longer.

When she noticed Evan, her hand came out, reaching high as she could and waving. "Hi Evan! hi...." She said bit quieter as he got closer...she only jumped a little at the shoulder touch, which was a big improvement then her scrambling for the hills. "Evan this is Finn, and Finn this is Evan! Moon and Sun! I'm very lucky to get to go...go with you guys." She flushed and hurriedly rushed to the portal because she was being embarrassing.

Once through, Noemi looked around. It was dark, so she had to pull out the runic flashlight they had given her and clung to the small light object. She hated the dark. The dark was the scariest. Anything came out in the dark.

She was waiting for Finn and Evan to join her, setting up a standing point by the small pods. Since nothing was going on with them, she fiddled with the flashlight more. Suddenly there was a loud jarring noise, sending her a step forward as she panicked just a little. The flashlight whipped around to the pods where....they had moved!?!?!

Was this the amusement park all over again!!?? Finn...Evan, please hurry already.

"Looks good on you, darling." He smiled, because he didn't want to give her any reason to doubt for a second that he was a really nice guy that would never intentionally hurt her (even though he gladly would given another chance to) and when the third of their party arrived, he turned that cold smile on him, giving a nod.

"Evening." He returned the greeting, and let Noemi give the introductions while getting his gear (a flashlight, apparently, was all that was needed) from the portal operators. "A sun? Well, whatever we end up facing out there, if anything, I guess I've got your back." And he would do his best, unless it seemed like he was risking his own life to do so, in which case he'd happily let the others fend for themselves.....

Noemi was the first to go through the portal into the foggy darkness beyond, and Finn was fairly close to follow, fiddling with his flashlight as he stepped through until it was flickering to life. He had taken his eye away from her for a second, and she was gone when he looked up again, sweeping the beam of light around.

"Noemi?" He hissed, not sure if they were supposed to be acting all stealthy or some s**t. He caught a flash of white in the not-too-far distance near some pods, and he began heading that way, continuing to look left and right, as well as down, mostly to make sure he wasn't going to trip over anything, as he approached.

Having only one eye made everything so much more difficult at times.

The fog, however, was thick, the light from his electric torch not cutting through it as well as he would have liked. It was a bit disorienting. Glancing over his shoulder, he expected to see Evan there with him, and while he caught more flickers of white jacket and light, it was difficult to make the other man out.

Shaking his head, he continued on, another glance at his feet showing pavement riddled with fissures. He was about to look back up again, however, when something caught his sight from the corner of his eye, causing him to look again, the image of a skeletal face suddenly springing to life and then....

..Gone. It was just gone, like it hadn't been there at all.

He was frowning more as he lifted his gaze back up and continued further, finding his way to the pods, Noemi's form becoming clear as he stepped out of the fog and to her side, a hand reaching out to grab her arm.

"Hey. Try not to wander off so far ahead." He wasn't trying to scold her, more along the lines of just giving her a recommendation. "See anything yet?"

And where had that other guy gone?

Noemi's reaction to something as benign as a touch to the shoulder did not go unnoticed, and Evan smiled down reassuringly at her. They would make this work. They had to; they had their orders, and those couldn't be changed, but Finn could cover for him and he, in turn could cover for her, and if things went south, well, hopefully at least Noemi would be able to make it back safely.

"Glad to hear it," Evan said to Finn. It had been some time since he'd gotten to work with an actual Moon, and he hoped it would make the mission run that much more smoothly.

Evan brought up the rear, flicking his flashlight on as soon as he was through the portal, but he still lost his teammates as they were swallowed by the thick fog. He could track them--just barely--by their own lights bobbing nearby, but there were too many to be just the two of them out there. Still, he stuck close to the ones that looked the most likely.

The flashlight wasn't much good at cutting through the mist, instead bouncing around and refracting to the point of distraction. Still, Evan switched between pointing it straight ahead and shining it at the ground so he could see where he was going. It seemed fairly clear, just cement, no debris to trip over--

The sudden sight of a face in the cracked cement was probably just a figment of his imagination, but the way it so suddenly disappeared certainly was not. Evan scuffed at the spot with the toe of a boot, the fingers of his free hand twitching in readiness to summon his weapon, and slowly exhaled when nothing happened.

It was just his imagination, just in his head, and there were things far worse than a phantom face that lived there. Evan heard Finn's voice up ahead and veered in the direction he thought it came from. "Don't wander off at all," Evan corrected. "Won't do us any good to split up here. Eyes on each other as much as you can."

Finn's arrival close to the pods made her breathe out a sigh of relief, her flashlight bobbing as she switched hands, making sure it was pointed at the pods at all times.

"I thought I saw..." She ran her flashlight around the pods, "those move but that would be silly right? Because...Because they shouldn't move or anything. It must be the fog right? Si...Silly me." She laughed awkwardly, even if she was feeling like a tightly strung wire. When Evan joined, she bobbed her head again.

"I will not leave you two. Or try not too. I will not leave you two." She repeated, just a bit more to herself then the first time. Her flashlight pointed to the ground, illuminating some sort of skull like apparition. Her weapon was summoned immediately and stabbed into the ground, but the face was already gone. Her flashlight had bounced and rolled on the ground away from her and the two men.

"S...Sorry." She whispered to both Mel, her trident currently in the ground and the two men. "Th..there was a skull face...I thought...but it's not....I'm sorry..."

"Yes, or at all." Finn repeated, letting out a long breath through his nose when Evan arrived with them, a part of him glad to see that the fog hadn't swallowed the other man up (as he was sure it could do. It could probably form teeth and claws and tear them all apart.). There was safety in numbers, after all, and he planned to be getting out of this place alive if at all possible.

He had begun to flick his flashlight around, towards a nearby building, eye squinting at the windows when Noemi's startled sound had his head whipping around back towards her, a hand held out as though to summon Trynt but relaxing when she explained herself. "You saw it too?" He said, looking down at the cement again, pointing his flashlight at the cracks and fissures which appeared to be nothing more than just that.

Giving his head a small shake, he looked back towards the building. "It's fine. You're fine. Come on, and stay close." He reminded her, "Or between me and Evan at least." He began to move, assuming the other two would keep up. There was something about the windows that had caught his eye, and as he approached, he could see more clearly that his suspicions were correct. There were several smashed panes of glass, and he stopped at the buildings edge, frowning as he let the light roam over the jagged edges.

"There's something here." He said to the others, though he didn't look towards them, instead leaning in for a better look. Was it shreds of cloth? He squinted at them. It was hard to really make it out.....

"Euughh." He made a disgusted sound, taking a step back. "It's skin. I don't know what from."

"What?" Evan leaned in the general direction Finn's flashlight was pointing, squinting as he tried to make out what was hanging in front of the windows. Well, it certainly wasn't curtains. "Forget about it. It's nothing worth lingering over. Let's move on," he said, more for Noemi's benefit. He put a hand on her shoulder and directed her away from the windows. She didn't need the excuse to be afraid.

Noemi's body wasn't turned away in time for her not to see the skin hanging. She knew it was skin, Finn had said it was skin.

Her hands shook on her arm, and tried to take comfort that Finn and Evan was there, But it was hard, and she wasn't brave like she pretended she wanted to be.

While Evan tried to spare Noemi from the sight of what Finn made more than clear they should not look at, the young woman seemed to have already caught a glimpse of it anyways. Eager to move on, Finn backed away from the window, turning his flashlight to shine on other parts of the building as he began to move along once more.

And than, suddenly, music.

Finn stopped, head tilting to the side as he listened, before tilting his head back and looking straight above, shining his flashlight up into the sky.

".......Do either of you hear that?"

No sign of their target yet, only the illusion of skulls shifting in the pavement. A trick of the fog and the illumination from the flashlight, nothing more. At Finn's question, Evan frowned and listened for anything out of the ordinary. He didn't hear anything but white noise, and most of it was coming from them.

"No," he replied slowly. "What are we supposed to be listening for?"

Obviously Evan was crazy, because Noemi could also hear the music. He frowned, glancing to the other man, "How can you not hear tha---" He had taken a step forward as he spoke, and suddenly, beneath him, there was a loud crack, followed by several more, and than a hiss as something green and noxious billowed up from beneath them.

Startled, and too late to stop himself, he breathed some of the chemical gas in. It hurt his lungs, and he found himself soon doubled over, coughing, his flashlight dropped in favor of his weapon summoned to his hand, though there was no immediate apparent enemy to strike down.

He felt nauseated, dizzy, his vision blurred. It felt like his ears had suddenly plugged off, all sound muted, his own voice as it shouted something wordlessly barely even registering. What the ******** was this?

The ground felt like it was lurching beneath his feet, but he couldn't tell if it actually was, everything seeming far too surreal to be actually happening.
