Mirrorspace was a constant source of stress and hope for Remarque; what should have been a safe place for the Dark Mirror Senshi was becoming less and less useful. Mirrorspace was constantly shifting, more so now than it had been in recent years, and it seemed like he was winding up in darker and darker corners. All his hopes to find some way to make Mirrorspace a true safe haven—somewhere the Dark Mirror Senshi could truly escape to, to thrive in…
Had failed.
And yet, here he was, after years of searching, still trying to find one door that could solve all his problems.
Because he couldn’t face the belief that he had wasted all these years.
Now, Remarque was wandering the halls—halls that felt familiar, but by no means were comfortable or welcoming. Halls that had lost their gleam, which looked like they were fragile and close to cracking.
Occasionally he felt another energy signature flicker nearby, but in Mirrorspace, always changing, he had not seen anyone.
It didn't stop him from searching; there were two doors down this hallway, though by the time he reached the end of it, there was only one door.
It made it easy for him to choose which one to go through.stari_maga I hope this is okay! If not, poke me and I can change things! <3

There wasn't much to do in Mirrorspace, but it was the one place where Cybele didn't feel choked by the Negaverse. She spent a little bit of time here, most days, usually after patrols. It was the best place to chat and connect with her Court without having to worry about running into anyone who might not like them. If there wasn't anyone to talk to, sometimes she would explore a little, but that was a little nerve wracking. If she went too deep into a place that was constantly shifting, would she be able to find her way back? She'd never found anything particularly interesting, anyway. Today, she was staying in one place, sitting in a comfortable position with her back against a wall and relaxing a little. She wasn't planning to stay long, and in fact was thinking about leaving when a door formed a few feet away from her and opened. She smiled when she saw who it was and waved in greeting, then got up to take a few steps towards him and curtsy. "Remarque! How are you?"

For as expansive as Mirrorspace could be, Remarque seemed a bit surprised that he would have actually managed to run into another Dark Mirror Senshi here. Then again—was there really any better place for a member of the Court to be? He couldn’t blame anyone who sought refuge in the winding corridors. "Cybele," he greeted, with a smoothness the belied any surprise he might have felt. "You're looking well."
It was more than a greeting; he sounded relieved. Everyone was so busy these days that he often found himself thinking about the Court members, wondering what they were getting into. Worrying that they were still alive, and not whisked away by some overzealous Negaverse Agent. "I'm doing as fine as ever," which, to be fair, wasn't saying much. He had a happy home life, but beyond that, work and powering up was keeping him busy. It was hard to get a good night's rest when you spent most of your free time wondering if tomorrow was the day the Negaverse adds you to their hit list.
"Keeping busy, but that's nothing new. What about you?"

Cybele smiled at the small talk, half out of habit, half because it was nice to spend time with members of her Court, especially its Royals. Something he said caught her attention, though. " Busy?" She locked eyes with Remarque and raised an eyebrow in question, but didn't ask anything outright. She simply hoped that he was busy trying to get them to space instead of... anything else. Well, he was in mirrorspace, talking to her. That was a good sign. "I'm very well, thank you," she said, mock cheerful, pasting an obviously fake grin on her face for a few seconds before she sighed and shook her head. "Honestly, though? I'm nervous, I'm tired, but that's typical, recently. I've been keeping busy, too. I'm still trying to gather energy in the city, which is getting harder. I haven't been caught by the Negaverse yet, but I heard they're actively recruiting again, so there will be even more of them around, and... I was caught by a White Moon senshi a few days ago, an old friend..." a particularly violent old friend, but she didn't feel the need to mention that. This conversation was already starting to sound a bit too much like complaining. Instead, she went back to smiling. "I'm alive, though, if that's what you mean by 'well', and it looks like you are, too."

Remarque lifted his head curiously when she mentioned her old friend. "Alive does not always mean well. You should take some time for yourself one of thse days. I know you're working hard, just don't work yourself to death." It was too easy to do, and too many were driving themselves too hard. He could justify it for himself; that was just his work ethic…but perhaps he was hypocritical by thinking it was too much to ask of others. Changing the subject, he asked, "Who is your friend in the White Moon?"
It wasn't just that the Prince was nosey, but he had been making his rounds with the members of the White Moon; there were more than a few that he found more than tolerable, but even he was curious to know who would give the Dark Mirror Court any hassle.
…And maybe a part of him was just a little too overprotective. The desire for self preservation, be it for him or any member of the Court, was still strong in him, and he would have done anything to secure their safety. Even if it meant dealing with Mirrorspace—if it meant playing nice with the Negaverse, or sucking up to the White Moon. The need for survival was important, but his pride had gotten in the way more times than he cared to admit

Cybele nodded attentively. Remarque's advice was appreciated, but it wasn't advice she could take, really. Taking as many classes as she could fit in her schedule, working enough to pay for the necessities, and sacrificing sleep for senshi duties was admittedly not the best for staying 'well,' but she wouldn't even let herself consider other options. "Well... maybe I'll stay home tomorrow evening, if it's all right with you, of course." Anything longer term than that was out of the question. She would rest when they were in space. "It's not really that, though," she continued, because getting her to admit that she was overworking herself was not that easy. "It's just hard for me to relax in the city, with the Negaverse everywhere. I spend time here when I can, which helps." Her pleasant, neutral expression faded when he asked about her friend, and she looked away for a moment. "Megrez?" She exhaled. "She's the Senshi of Eggs, but I don't think I can call her my friend anymore. That was just... nostalgia, probabally. She attacked me. She'll never join us, if that's why you're asking." She couldn't smile after that, but she met her Prince's gaze again. Being treated like a traitor was another thing that she wouldn't admit bothered her deeply. "Or... become one of our allies," she finished after a moment. Her tone, though controlled, made it clear that she didn't like the idea of allies, herself.

Megrez, Senshi of Eggs? What an unfortunate sphere. "I'm just asking to know," he assured, though what he planned to do with that knowledge might have been another story altogether.
"It is unfortunate, though. White Moon Senshi have been getting better with accepting us," though if only out of desperation, "Though I suppose there are still a few bad—" he faltered, stopping himself from saying eggs and hastily concluded, "Seeds. I am sorry that you've lost a friend, though. I know it is never easy, but I have faith that you'll pull through. We all have to."
He sighed softly, and leaned back to stretch. "Hopefully the Negaverse will keep her distracted so she doesn't attack you. If there's anything good about the Negaverse," he paused and then shook his head. "Who am I kidding—there's nothing good about them. I can't relax with them around, either. They frustrate the hell out of me. I don't trust them one bit."

Did anyone ever just ask to know? If they did, it wasn't often... which didn't bother Cybele. She gave people information so that they could use it. "Well, you were never with the White Moon, were you? So, you don't have to deal with the whole 'traitor' bit. It's... not the sort of thing that gets easier to hear, but it's the sort of thing I can deal with. I have better friends now, anyway." She half smiled in Remarque's direction in a way that was supposed to imply, like you. "But what I'm trying to say is it's personal. Most of the White Moon- of Order, are civil to me, nice to me, even. It's better than having to fight them all the time." They wouldn't be able to earn her trust again, though. "Maybe even someone like her wouldn't attack someone like you, I don't know." "The Negaverse, though... I stay out of their way as much as I can.” She missed hunting them, sometimes, but hunting was useless when you were the prey. “It… helps." However, the Negaverse was very good at making their presence known. “That’s why I come here so much.”

"I might never have defected from the White Moon, but I have friends. Many of them who have changed since this war really turned. I don't blame them for being over cautious. But I do blame them when they attack our numbers because they think that's supposed to help them. The Negaverse is a problem. A huge problem. And I hate having to pretend like I give a s**t about them. Or that I agree with what they are doing. They're just biding their time, but I know they are going to turn on us as soon as they think we are at our weakest."
He seemed convinced of this, but he had been paranoid about them for a long time now. Even before they managed to get so powerful.
"But I think everyone knows our days are numbered if we don't figure something else out. And Mirrorspace...I used to like to come here to think. Now, I don't know. Sometimes this place just puts me on edge. You be careful, don't go too deep into Mirrorspace. You might not like what you find."

Cybele took a moment to sit down while Remarque was talking, neatly smoothing her skirts over legs properly folded to one side. "I know," she said after a short pause, "Trust me, I don't like it either. I don't know which is worse, the Negaverse or old friends who want to kill you. The city is like a death trap. Either side could turn on us, really, and we have no chance against either of them." "Don't worry though. I'll smile and I'll make the White Moon believe we are not their enemies, and the Negaverse think we are helpless and compliant until we can find a way out of here. Have we made any progress on getting to space, by the way?" There was subtle worry in her voice. She didn't like the way her Prince was talking, although she had similar thoughts, herself. "Or here? You say to be careful... Do we not stay here because it's too dangerous?" She glanced down a corridor, which seemed a little ominous, but that was probably in her head. The actual reason she'd given up on exploring was because all she'd ever found were similar shifting rooms and hallways that weren't particularly interesting.

Remarque followed her gaze and just sighed. He had no good news to share and was more than disappointed to be at such a loss. "Mirrorspace is not to be trusted, unfortunately. The Negaverse and White Moon are not the only things we have to worry about. I suppose we should try to up our energy gathering and see if collecting anything could be a benefit to us, but with the limits the Negaverse is trying to enforce, it's difficult. I blame them for everything that's gone wrong. But," he looked back to her and flashed a quick smile. "You are doing good. Keep up the good work. As long as no one suspects us of anything, we're good, and we've bought ourselves some time. I haven't figured out how to get into space but..."
But there was still time. And, despite his warnings about Mirrorspace, he still suspected that there was something within it that could help them. Maybe it was a false hope, but he was holding onto it. And if he couldn't figure something out? Maybe someone else could.

The tiredness in his voice was not lost on her. The cracks in Mirrorspace were not completely lost, either, or the way that things here seemed to shift violently. She hadn't been in the Court as long as Remarque had, of course, so without a baseline of how things had been before, it was easier to ignore such irregularities. At least, to a certain point. She still tried to push down the lump that was forming in her chest. The Negaverse had always been the enemy. The White Moon had failed her. The Mirror would be the answer, the safety that they all sought. She would do everything in her power to make sure of that. "I'll see what I can do about the energy," she said. " Carefully. I'll ask around about the rest." Her smile was tired, too. "I'm going to see what rest I can manage. I'll let you know if I have any ideas, though, or any more questions." With that, she began to walk down the misty hallways once more. Kyuseisha no Hikari Fin literally eight years later oops
