Hvergelmir had first met Princess Chariklo five years ago, when she'd only been a squire and her friend had only been Super Sailor Chariklo. Times and fortunes had changed for both of them, since then, but some things didn't. Hvergelmir had curtsied when she'd met her then. Eyes sparkling somewhat playfully, she curtsied now.

The little cabin in the woods where she'd asked the princess to meet her was miles from the main campsite. It served as a hunting box for when they needed game farther afield, as well as a bolthole for people on the run who didn't want to risk returning to camp for one reason or another, if they were uncertain of pursuit. And today, standing beside the mirror where Chariklo had arrived, it served as a quiet place for a private conversation.

Princess, she signed, straightening up. Always a pleasure to see your lovely face.

As she exited the mirror, Chariklo had a moment of emotional vertigo. Here she was, a member of the Dark Mirror Court. A Princess of that same Court. And she was friends with one of the Knights. Ares and Leto would doubtless be livid if they knew. Not, she thought sadly, that Ares could know much of anything. Not when she'd been missing for so long. But strange times made for alliances that otherwise could never have been possible.

The Negaverse seizing control so thoroughly definitely counted as Strange Times.

Moving forward, she smiled and caught Hvergelmir up in a bear hug, giving her a little face nuzzle that ended in a gentle kiss upon her forehead.

"It's more of a pleasure to see yours, Hver," she answered easily. "You are never less than beautiful inside and out. And I'm just Chariklo for you. Not Princess."

Grinning a little, she pointed over her shoulder to the bulging knapsack perched on her back.

"I brought you some more books. Couldn't find any poetry, but I did find some hilarious girl porn you might get a kick out of. Brought you some stuff to make smoothies too. Already mixed and all, just add juice or water or milk."

Only then did she take a small step back to study the Knight. Her scarf did a good job of hiding her scars, but even knowing they were there broke Chariklo's heart. It was cruel and brutal and for her, a symbol of everything wrong with the Negaverse. Reaching up a hand, she brushed a strand of the pale Knight's hair from her face, expression full of concern.

"You're eating and sleeping, right? Everything's all right at the camp?"

It was all prattle for her, but it helped ease some of the anxiety in her gut. She still wasn't entirely sure that either of them had the authority for the conversation they were about to have. But in this case, she felt it was important enough to act now and ask forgiveness (if warranted) later.

Hvergelmir let Chariklo in close enough to touch her face, allowing herself a friendly nose-to-nose kunik in return. With most people, she might've withdrawn, protecting her face -- but Chariklo was a good friend. Her touch was always welcomed.

She smiled at Chariklo's flattery, and at the description of the books she'd brought as gifts, and cocked an eyebrow. You're a married woman, she signed. Don't you get me into trouble just because you've got me alone in the woods.

(She wasn't sure she wanted to admit how she signed 'Chariklo' -- which was the letter C followed by the sign for 'bird.' 'Princess' was much better.)

At Chariklo's solicitious questions, she raised her hands in surrender and shook her head. I'm fine. I eat all my pureed vegetables and I always share my air mattress with at least one cat to ward off bad dreams. Foolproof method.

There was no getting around the other part of the inquiry, though. The big part.

Things went south at the Oasis the other day. I don't know if you've heard. One of the patients in recovery saw a Dark Mirror walking by and had a panic attack. Your people had corrupted someone in his family. He tore his stitches and they had to sedate him. People are tense. On our side, even sailor and knight relations are strained right now because of it.

Sunset colored eyes twinkling with mischief, Chariklo grinned and batted her hand in the air in a Whoa, Whoa gesture.

"Married, not dead, honey. Besides, Amytis would kill me if I tried to get up to trouble out in the woods without including her. I've seen what her magic can do, I don't want it aimed at me!"

Chuckling, her grin softened into an affectionate smile as she moved to take her backpack off.

"Well, if you ever feel like swapping the cat out for a pair of twins, let me know. I'm sure Aarne and 'Tasha would love to see their Aunt Hver again. And pfft! Vegetables. All well and good, but everyone knows Wheaties are where it's at."

She would have continued in this vein had it not been for the other woman's news. Freezing and feeling the blood rush from her face, she dropped the backpack to the ground and almost followed it. Who had he seen walking? Amytis? Cruithne? Both were known to help at the Oasis. s**t, she'd have to pull in all of the Dark Mirrors she knew who might have a reason to visit and verbally ream them.

"No," she answered slowly, running a worried hand over her face. "No, I hadn't heard. Is he okay? No lasting harm from the stitches? I'd offer to go and apologize personally, but I'd rather not give him a second panic attack."

And if this was straining relations throughout the camp.. Oh, this was not good. Chariklo had worked hard to gain the trust of the people in the camp. She didn't want to lose what protection it gave her wife, kids and friends to a truly unfortunate incident.

"So, is that why we're meeting in the woods instead of back at camp then?"

He's fine now, Hvergelmir signed back. But that's what I wanted to talk to you about. This alliance we have now... She paused, choosing her words. It's better than nothing. We all know that. That's why we do it. But this isn't really benefiting anyone badly enough. Everyone on our side thinks you could walk away at any moment if the war takes a last sharp turn. Everyone on your side...

Hvergelmir looked away. I can't claim to know what they say about us, but I can imagine. The tangible things we've offered each other are quite small. I'd like to suggest something bigger. Something that has real meaning to us and to you.

Do you trust me? Will you hear out my terms?

She looked up at her friend, questions in her eyes.

Last time, she'd made a vow alone. It had been her decision, with no one to convince of its rightness. This time she had to get two other people to take the leap of faith instead. She'd already managed to gain Babylon's help -- now she needed Chariklo's. If the princess didn't agree, she wasn't sure she'd have as much luck trying to make the same deal with a DMC senshi she didn't have that much of a long-standing relationship with.

There was a lessening of tension between her shoulders at the news that the panic attack sufferer was doing all right now. And that small relief was replaced by new tensions as Hver continued to talk. Watching carefully, Chariklo wondered what on earth the Knight had in mind. If it could truly help them all, she'd be a fool to ignore this opportunity.

Besides, Hvergelmir had never lied to her. And Chariklo doubted that she'd start now.

"You know I trust you," she answered softly. "So what are these terms?"

She had no choice but to hear them out. Doing otherwise could easily doom what was left of the Dark Mirror Court.

Now that it came to it, Hvergelmir was nervous. What if she made her offer, and it wasn't enough? What if the Dark Mirror court started demanding concessions, things they weren't willing to give?

What if it was just too much?

She put up her hands and signed. In the event that we have to leave Earth for some reason, if we lose the camp and need to regroup, or if . . . if Earth's too dangerous to stay -- Babylon of Mercury is willing to take you and your people with us to his city.

Hvergelmir had an unsated need to pace the room as she spoke, to let off some anxious energy. She knew she couldn't, though -- it was hard to sign if the listener couldn't see you because you were wandering around like an idiot.

In exchange, you and your people stop all corruptions from here on out. If you want to go to space, we can take you. But the more of you there are, the more can't get there on their own. And each senshi we lose shifts Earth away from Order and toward Chaos. Each time, that makes it harder for us to get off-world. You'd bring us any new senshi you can find.

It can't be very different from what you're already doing, can it?

As she 'listened', Chariklo released the breath she'd been holding from sheer apprehension. No, what they were asking wasn't that different from what she and Remarque and likely Damocles had already been doing. But a blanket ban on all Mirror corruptions just wasn't feasible.

"It sounds fair," she began slowly, drumming her fingers against her arm as she thought. "But there are a few amendments I'd like to make. They aren't huge, but they need to be out in the open."

She went quiet again, clearly trying to figure out the best way to phrase things.

"I agree with you about ruining everyone's chances if we just corrupt willy-nilly. It's something I've thought about. And I'm happy with trying to bring you any senshi I find. But it's not going to be possible to stop corruptions entirely. There will be those who come and ask to be given to the Mirror. There aren't a lot of them anymore, but they exist. In that case, what I can promise is that I will do my best to talk them around, but if they insist, I won't deny them. Denying them might make them go the the Negaverse."

Chariklo began to pace as she spoke. Here was the answer to part of her prayers. She couldn't afford to ruin it. Every word would have to be carefully measured out to avoid trouble.

"I will also pledge that unless it is a case of the only possible way to keep a senshi alive and safe from the Negaverse, if it is the only way to save their life, I will not corrupt anyone. I'll tell the others too. I doubt they'll disagree. Hell, I'll even agree to continue the supply runs and ferry work."

Now she stopped pacing and turned to look seriously at her friend.

"In exchange for these concessions, we can get off the planet in the event of a massive retreat. But I also want permission for Dark Mirrors, provided they're not bridge burning crazies, to be able to come to the camp. Provided they behave, of course. And if they don't, I have one other pledge for you. I'll kill them myself."

Hvergelmir let out the breath she'd been holding. It was not, unfortunately, a good exhale.

Hvergelmir had taken the camp's little uneasy alliance and tried to stretch it into something bigger -- a formal treaty, a grand bargain. But Chariklo was asking to go broader than that. What she was asking involved the whole camp, not just the city of Babylon.

To save a life -- I think Babylon may agree to that. For the other possibility, if they come begging for it... She frowned, fingers briefly curled against her cheek in contemplation. I don't know what he'll say. We'll have to see what terms we can all agree to.

Her frown deepened at the last item she had to address. Chariklo wanted blanket permission for Dark Mirror senshi to be able to come and live at the camp. To enter and leave as they pleased.

You know it's not in my power to offer the camp to you. Babylon's, either. What you're asking is a treaty with the entirety of us. You would risk all our lives -- for something like that, we would have to put it to a vote.

I'll arrange for you to meet with Babylon, but he'll tell you the same. Neither of us has the authority to offer you the lives of every soul at this camp.

Well, it had been worth a shot. Grimacing a little, Chariklo nodded in reluctant agreement. It was a fair concern, much as she might hate to admit it.

"What if I amend it to just the Dark Mirrors that I can vouch for personally? Amytis is already here with the kids and Cruithne helps Ida out in the Med tent. You know they're harmless and about as likely to betray you as I am. And I hope you know I have no intentions of betraying anyone."

She wanted her loved ones safe. That wasn't too much to ask, was it? Another thought popped into her head and she threw it out, hoping that it would be another point in her favor.

"Leto doesn't know about this place. I'm sure she knows something like it exists, but she doesn't know you're out here. Remarque hasn't told her, nor Damocles. Hver, I haven't even told her that Amytis and I have the twins. And she was my best friend and Captain. At one point, my Princess. I'd have happily taken a bullet for her. Surely that says something in my favor as far as my motivations go?"

Chariklo's shift to compromise came as an intense relief. It was still an offer they'd ultimately have to clear with the camp, she was sure, but it was, at least, one that she thought could conceivably be acceptable to people. Everyone around the hospital knew Chariklo, Amytis, and Cruithne. Sightless Tantalus too, she thought, might be welcomed, though she didn't want to offer any concessions until they were specifically asked for. Right now, people at camp accepted the little group of them as long as they kept within their expected bounds and behaviors, or went about accompanied by others to guard them. It was possible they'd vote to extend their trust just a little bit further on behalf of the people the camp had come to know more personally.

I trust you, she signed. But I'm no one. I have no sway with anyone and no authority here. It would carry more weight for Ida or Oenone to speak for you. People that think of me at all, other than my own friends, see my ideals as outdated. You would look worse if I argued for you.

Babylon is in camp until tomorrow. Can I tell him you'll meet with him here tomorrow, at the same time? He's the first one you have to convince.

Twilight Jaws

"I think you're selling yourself short, babe," she muttered as she scrubbed her face with both hands, reflecting her exhaustion. "But if Babylon is who I need to start with, let's do that. Ida's always so busy, I don't want to bother her with this just yet."

As she paced, she considered the Dark Mirrors that she knew and trusted. She couldn't see Remarque or Damocles hanging around the camp, but maybe...

"Fair warning, I'm adding Tantalus to my list. Surely no one could object to a blinded man. And well," she fidgeted a little, "he's my kids' dad. If something happens to me, they're gonna need a full set of parents."

It hurt to think about it, but she had to. She was thinking about more than just herself in this.

Hvergelmir reached up a hand to brush it gently over Chariklo's cheek, tracing the line of one high cheekbone with the pads of her fingertips just briefly.

If something happens to you, she signed out, we'll all have worse problems than just that.

Chariklo and her helpers were the main lifeline by which the Oasis struggled along on a day to day basis. Hvergelmir and Nærøyfjord were responsible for supply runs where they needed something special that only a hospital or its dispensary could provide, things they could get sneaking into the city to meet Ganymede and teleporting back out -- but all the daily deliveries of simple, everyday supplies were run by Chariklo and her people. Bandages, cotton swabs, over-the-counter pharmaceuticals, rubber gloves. They could probably scrape by without the Dark Mirror Court's help, with fewer and more dangerous supply runs, but they couldn't get by nearly so well. Most of the people at the Oasis would die for lack of ability on the field hospital's part to support them.

It was a fragile system.

Camp rights couldn't go beyond that list, at most, she said. But are there any other members of your court you trust not to betray us if we took them to space? If you and Babylon make terms, I can extend them the same offer -- a place on Mercury in exchange for an end to corruptions.

Twilight Jaws
PostPosted: Tue Aug 12, 2014 5:46 am

Smiling a little as Hver traced a finger along her cheek, Chariklo nodded to acknowledge the truth of her signed words.

"Truth."

She considered the Dark Mirrors that she knew of and frowned a little. Once she'd known just about each one. Now? Now it was so difficult to keep track of them. She could only vouch for those closest to her heart, though she was sure there would be others who could be trusted if she could just find them.

"You can trust Damocles. He has no love for the Negaverse thanks to his sister's antics," she said musingly, tapping her fingers against her chin as she thought. "Remarque would probably be willing to talk terms, but I'd want to be there with you if you talked to him. Lesath would go with Remarque, I'm fairly sure. Don't bother with Leto though. She'd just try to kill you where you stood."

It almost felt disloyal to say it, but it was true. And Hvergelmir was not someone they could afford to lose to anyone.

"I know of other random Dark Mirrors, but I don't know how much I could trust them since I haven't worked very much with them. But I can watch them and slip you the word if they prove themselves."

This agreement might only get them to Mercury, but she'd heard the rumors of tech on Mercury. From there, they could doubtless figure out a way to get to the other stars out there.

Hvergelmir nodded her understanding, making note of Chariklo's various assessments. It was nothing they hadn't already heard of Princess Leto. Time and Chaos had turned Leto and her Negaverse lover Persephone quite dark, by all popular accounts. She knew better than to expect help from either quarter, much though she'd once seen Persephone as peaceable and friendly.

Chariklo's word on Damocles was what she'd hoped to hear; Remarque, who they all knew of quite less, was a promising additional possibility.

It was somewhere to start.

Babylon first, she signed. Then we can deal with Damocles and Remarque. I'll need a translator anyway. Waiting for me to write things down makes people impatient.

Thank you, old friend. I love you with my whole heart. Here, tomorrow, then?

She put out her hand for Chariklo to shake.
