It wasn't often that Lyonesse went into the city during the day, but when he did, he was glad for the new glamor that made him unrecognizable in civilian form. He was unassuming enough, and knew enough of the Negaverse, to be able to avoid having to answer too many questions - and so he was wandering the streets, indulging in his curiosity about a city he mostly only remembered by night.
When his eyes fell on the bookstore, a sense of warmth and familiarity that he was entirely unused to filled him. Bookstores, for some reason, were good places - and he once again cursed his lack of memories of his civilian life, because he was pretty sure that was where this came from.
Either way, it couldn't hurt. Maybe he could pick up a book or two for Hvergelmir while he was here. God knew the poor girl deserved some nice things.

Sabina cleaned up one of the tables as a customer got up to leave. He had already purchased the book and had merely stayed to enjoy some of the fresh blueberry muffins she had baked earlier in the day, before opening. As the door opened, she saw someone lingering outside of her store. She placed a hand softly on the door as her customer left. The heat from outside rushed inside to greet her and it made her wish she hadn't worn a dress with long sleeves. There was a smile for the stranger. "Hello. Please, come in if you like." Her hair stirred in a slight breeze and ruffled the petals of the daisy clipped to the side of her head. "I have free muffins." Though she didn't know if he was friend or foe, it didn't matter. Sometimes a smile and kindness was all someone really needed. Most that fought for Chaos stayed in powered form because they had nothing to fear. She knew why other knights traveled to their wonder so often. There had also been rumors of senshi that had fled to their wonder in this time of need. So yes, a friend was all anyone really needed now and she could be that friend.

Free muffins sounded like a very good selling point. Sam flashed her a smile. He knew he couldn't look all that pleasant he was Mainstay, not Watchers, and physical appearance wasn't that big of a deal when he could power up and look just fine again.
"That sounds really great," he said, and he stepped into the bookstore. Jut as it had felt from the outside, the inside warmed him, and he found himself curiously turning around, examining shelves without touching. It was a physical effort not to sneer at the Negaverse propaganda, but expressing distaste was probably a really poor idea. "It's been a while since I've had a chance to go book shopping."

Sabina pulled the door closed and almost frowned at it's squeaking. One day, should the war not destroy her humble abode, she would get that door fixed and get a proper bell on it instead of using it's age to notify her of customers. She nodded at his words, "I figured as much. I didn't recognize you and a lot of the old bookstores got destroyed." If one listened closely, there was a hint of sadness to her words. She grabbed the tray of muffins, the smell of blueberries wafted through the air. Even she felt like eating one it smelled so damn good. "Feel free to browse and even read a book. I don't require you to buy one to stay, unless you spill something on it." Giving in to the urge, she picked up one and pulled bits off to eat. Sabina had to admit that she was more curious about this stranger than was healthy. He did not seem like he knew the area too well. After all, she had been around for some time. That and he didn't look too well groomed. Anyone of the Negaverse was easy to spot, they flaunted themselves like they were made of gold or something. Most civilians lived in fear, were completely brainwashed, or were secretly sympathizers that had to hide or fled. On impulse she added, "Also, if you have any stories to share, I love hearing stories." Sometimes it was really hard to tell if someone was an ally or not.

"A lot of things have been destroyed, the past few years," Sam said, and there was a thick hint of bitterness in his voice. Arguably, he counted as one of them - after all, he couldn't even remember himself. He shook his head briefly to stop thinking that way. God, this was why he didn't come into the city much - it hurt too much to compare the map these days with the one he remembered (even if it was a mostly nighttime memory) and to think of all the things that weren't there anymore.
He took a muffin from the tray, carefully biting into it. "I'll take a look around," he said, 'just not at the propaganda.' He wondered if any of the ones he'd bene involved in were still there, or if they'd purged the name of General Natron from the records after his defection.
"I've got a lot of stories, but most of them are hard to tell," he confessed, taking another bite and wandering over to one of the shelves. "Do you have science fiction?"

Sabina nodded in understanding. That was very true, so much had been destroyed. Too much if one asked her. All for Chaos. Memories rushed through her mind of all the death and destruction she had seen. She had almost no friends anymore, at least none from when she first came to Destiny City. The bitterness in his voice gave her hope that he could be an ally. "Well, I hope you can find some peace among my shelves. Books can take you to new places." Better places, she wanted to say. "Science Fiction, that would be past the children's section." She pointed to the hard to miss low shelves with toys and picture books. "Just that way and to the back of the shop. I keep Fantasy and Sci-fi next to each other." She wouldn't prod him on the stories. If he wanted to share, he would. Sabina liked to think her bookstore was a place of healing. "I have a friend who loves to read, I'd like to bring some things to her," Sam said, and he headed in the directions he indicated, fingers brushing over the spines and a warm feeling settling in his chest. He had lost all his civilian memories - the price he paid for freedom from the Negaverse - and he had very few memories of things he'd liked. Based on what people had told him, he could only guess scifi had been one of those things - and the warm feeling of "I know this book" several of the titles gave him only confirmed that.
He selected a few that felt strongly familiar, and a few that based on the summaries, he thought Hvergelmir might like. He only had a little contact with the mute Knight, but he wanted to help in whatever small way he could. It would never make up for what the Negaverse had done to her, but...he could try.
He had to be careful - he didn't have much in the way of money, just what he'd had on him when he purified really, and he'd made it stretch on his few excursions into the city. (Apparently he had planned well, because it was a decent amount of cash.)
"It must be nice, working with books all day."

Sabina nodded. "That's very nice of you." Not thinking, she asked, "Is there a reason she can't come down and grab them herself?" It took a few seconds for her to realize what she had asked. The only indication being a stiffening of muscles. That was a bit careless. There were lots of reasons for people to not come here or even to the city at all. Still, she let it go. If he chose to answer, then so be it. If not, she had no problem letting the question dissolve in the air between them. She turned away from him for a bit to compose herself. At times, she let the happiness slip from her and what was left was a bitter woman which she did not like at all. At his last words, Sabina found it easy to let a smile slide in place of her frown. When she did look at him again, her face was relaxed and tiny wrinkles indicated that she often had this expression on her face. "It's the best. I can escape from reality whenever I wish to. But the greatest joy is being able to help others escape, if only for a bit. I love seeing my customers smile. It's not something I see often outside of my store." And there it was, that rebellious side of her that could sometimes overpower her need to stay safe and unnoticed.

"She has her reasons," Sam replied, and his eyes flicked over to her, narrowing slightly. He had never been particularly trusting, and that was even truer now. He stepped away from the shelves, holding the books close to his chest, almost like a shield.
"Books are a pretty good escape from reality. There's a lot to get away from." That was a dangerous thing to say, and he knew it, but if she was an informant of some kind - well, he was almost never in town, anyway, so it wouldn't matter much.

Sabina nodded in understanding and let it drop away. No point in saying anything about it. She had not meant to inquire into something that was likely to bring bad memories. Her thoughts strayed to the few she knew who had survived the torture of the Negaverse. It was sick what happened to them and they had the scars, emotional and physical, to show how strong they had been to survive. She offered him a sweet smile. "There is. Don't be afraid to escape a little if you want here. I take great care to make sure any customers or browsers are comfortable." Sabina wasn't sure what to make of him. He didn't act like those for chaos. Then again, he was probably wondering what to make of her. It was sad to think that one has to keep their guard up at all times, not knowing if someone is a friend or foe. What happened to normal villains? Like someone wanting to break in and rob you? She could handle that.
