There was always something to do at the refugee camp. Particularly at the hospital, but most everywhere else there was also an odd job or two to do for any willing volunteer. Mend a tent, find a missing thingamabob or another, settle an argument, etc. Ashur, as it happened, was among those who were willing to do even the smallest of things to help anyone who was staying at the camp, especially the civilians, stay as comfortable as possible. He'd just finished fixing a messed up race car toy-thing that one of the civilian children had been crying about, much to the chagrin of his parents. The knight was glad to be of service and excused himself as soon as he finished, quickly making his way toward the borders to have a bit of down time before he would go and perhaps offer his services to the Guard. They were always in need of another set of eyes, after all.

Ash stretched out a bit as he walked, eyes set on the distant nighttime scenery that was Destiny City. He sighed slowly, mind briefly going back to his days as a teenager and struggling student there. It didn't do anyone much good to dwell on the past, and he knew that. There were plenty of friends he'd made that had since joined the Negaverse and would readily turn him in if given the chance; he felt (pity) for them, sure, but whatever attachments he'd had to all but a select few had been severed since he left the city.

Old friends and familiar faces, he thought with another sigh, were too few and too far between, these days.

Funny, though, how that thought bubbled up just before he sensed a familiar presence, and he jogged the rest of the way toward the it. As soon as he saw who it was, though, he slowed to a walk and gave a broad smile. "Evenin'," he greeted as soon as he was close enough, even going so far as to offer a bro-hug.

The more he ventured out, the more careless he was being. And yet, he couldn’t convince himself not to at least check on things — to see if they needed more supplies, if they were preparing for an attack, anything that would help. Seeing his friends in a time like this was both bittersweet and a relief, and Valhalla greeted Ashur with a hug in return.

“How are you?” he asked, sounding almost breathless in relief to see that Ashur was still alive, still uncorrupted. It seemed as though he felt that way with everyone whose path he crossed these days. He didn’t smile, despite being glad to see him well, or at least well enough — part of him wondered if he even remembered how to smile.

“I can’t stay long, I just wanted to see if the hospital was running low on supplies. Ganymede was going to try and collect some more things during the week…” he shared, although he was always cautious about how much he shared. Ashur should at least know that Paris worked in the medical field now, often smuggling out medical supplies.

"Hanging in there. You?" he answered, though he sensed that this wasn't so much a social meeting as it was business. Still, he gave Valhalla a once-over and noted just an overall...tiredness about him. The sort of tired that was simply beyond physical exhaustion; it was a look all too familiar. He brushed his own worries aside for now and got right down to it, walking alongside the Royal Knight as they made their way further into the camp. "Last I heard some of the supplies are running a bit low. Can't say which, though, so you'd have to go and check in the Ida." His offer to go along didn't needed to be voiced out.

At mention of Ganymede, he glanced back over at his friend. He was aware of the risks the Eternal was taking for the sake of the Resistance, and he worried. Of course he was well aware that she was more than capable of taking care of herself, but these days it was almost impossible to think of his friends and his allies doing what they had to and not worry. Even just coming out here was a risk in itself, and he knew that as soon as Valhalla left he would worry and hope that he made it back without any problems. He couldn't help it, knowing the fact that today they'd be friends yet tomorrow they might facing off in some sick and twisted battle to the death.

"How is she?" he asked as they went, eyes then focused ahead of them as they walked slowly toward the hospital. "And while we're at it, how're things in general?" A veiled question, more asked for the purpose of finding out how his family was doing than anything else.

Valhalla nodded in agreement with Ashur in regard to the supplies. “Yeah, I was going to stop by and see if there was anything Ida needed in particular. At least then Ganymede can keep an eye out for it…” He didn’t want her stealing too many things, lest they find her out, but he knew she, like himself and so many others, were willing to give up everything in order to help.

“I’m fine,” was his generic response when anyone asked how he was. And he was fine, comparatively. He hadn’t been killed or corrupted or maimed, at least. Everyone he ever cared about hadn’t been taken away from him… yet…

“She hates it. Hates having to follow orders from them. She’s managing to keep a low enough profile, but you know how she is…” Sassy, passionate, and courageous in ways Valhalla didn’t think was humanly possible, but Ganymede was special in that regards.

“And we got a notice that Peter’s been officially declared dead by the state,” he bit back a hiss, his expression suddenly hard. “I guess they were cleaning out missing persons’ files and decided it wasn’t worth it to keep looking. I haven’t told our mom yet. She keeps everything ready for whenever he comes home… But he was so stupid, you know?? Why would a kid try and get mixed up in all this??”

He hesitated, glancing towards Ashur apologetically, realizing he was getting upset about something that couldn’t be changed. The fact that his father was killed and his brothers presumed dead wasn’t exactly the easiest thing to swallow, but after three plus years, he should be getting over it. Besides, Ashur’s family had been killed as well, so it wasn’t as though Valhalla had to explain himself to him.

“What have you been up to? How’s Jasmyn and Cliff…? I met up with Themiscyra just a couple days ago… I’m glad to see she’s doing okay.”

"Fine" was about how well most everyone was doing now, considering. Everyone had suffered serious losses and continued to struggle with the threat of the Negaverse constantly looming overhead. Ashur was glad to see that Valhalla was doing alright though, at least enough to still be "fine" with everything happening around them. When he answered the question concerning Ganymede Ash nodded slightly. His smile had since dwindled, though it resurfaced at the thought of how she was likely rebelling in her own little way. "I do, so I asked. Still got that fire about her, huh?"

But the smirk that came on was wiped off his face at the news about Peter. He kept silent and listened as Valhalla continued for a moment, and he clenched his jaw as a picture of Peter, the last time he'd seen him, fluttered into his mind for a second. He lifted a hand to the other's shoulder as a small means of comfort when he finished. It'd been some years since his own family had been taken, and he knew exactly how fresh his own wounds still were so he definitely understood how the other must have been feeling right then. Words of condolence, he knew, did little to make it easier to accept; at least not for him, so this was all that he offered. After a moment, he lowered his hand and rolled his shoulders in a shrugging motion with regard to the other's questions.

"Doing what I can, I guess. It's all hands on deck, but even in the downtime they give me I wander around and see if I can help out any of the civilians out here. As for those two, they're doing alright. She doesn't remember much, he remembers too much but he's more like me in that he just won't let anything out." He scratched his head at the thought. "He's getting restless though, and I'm always wondering if he's trying to go out and..."

He didn't finish the thought as his eyes met Val's and he thought of Peter, who'd been around the same age as Cliff when he'd gone missing. And then a bit of silence followed before he went on.

"You did?" he asked, unaware that the two had met at all. He knew that she had her own things to deal with without him, though whenever such instances came up he always offered subtle reminders that he was there should she need him. He wasn't about to deny that it bothered him a little that she wouldn't share, but that was probably just more worrying on his part. "She's doing well enough to still be stickin' it to 'em, yeah. Takes a lot more to knock her down now."

They turned a corner and he nodded towards the hospital tent. It was still a way's away, but even from where they were it was obvious how busy things were in that section of the camp. "I'm worried about her, though," he said as an old couple passed by, both with eyes brimming with tears. He could only guess the news they'd just gotten... "She's working herself to practically death in there, but it's like she's barely making a dent in the damage being done." It was not too difficult an observation to make, really, but Ash wasn't quite sure if he should be the one to bring it up with the Princess. "If you meet anyone willing, we could use more hands in there these days."

Valhalla nodded in understanding as Ashur spoke to him, more than happy to distract himself from the thoughts suddenly swirling up. It was so easy to look back at the things that should have been done differently, or done better. Regret for not being a better brother, for being able to protect him. Maybe if he was more of a fighter, he would have been able to do something.

Maybe he should adopt a more violent lifestyle. Maybe he should take fighting more seriously… And yet… saving lives in other ways seemed so much more meaningful. If only he’d known that he wouldn’t have more time with his family, maybe things would be different. Or maybe they would be exactly the same.

In regards to the Oasis… Valhalla glanced sadly its way, nodding in agreement once more. “Yeah, I know,” he said remorsefully, wishing he could do more, but he spent all his time at the firestation. They could all only do so much, and hopefully Ida knew her limits. Working herself to death would do nothing for them. “She’s doing what she feels she has to. As long as she realizes that there are others who can help her, and rely on them more…”

He wasn’t trying to critique her or anything like that, but he did hope she was smart enough to rest when she had to. Losing her would be a huge blow to the Resistance.

"Just sucks that she always looks like she's pushing herself to the brink is all," he said with another sigh, eyes trained on the hospital tent further up their path. "I mean I'm pretty sure everyone's doing what they can. Can't blame a guy for wanting things to let up so she and other healer types can take more breaks, y'know?" It was sad to think that giving the medical teams a break would be the bonus if things did start getting better; the flip side would mean that there wouldn't be so many patients to attend to, which would be the better end of that deal no matter how one looked at it. He set his eyes on the Oasis for a bit longer before finally glancing back over at Valhalla.

"So I hear there've been some changes to a few things in the city," he started, wanting to keep to business now that they've sort of updated each other on the more personal side of things. It helped to keep himself focused on current things; kept him from looking back and regretting things and wondering what things would have been like if he had done anything differently. Now and forward, that was where he preferred to keep looking toward. "What's that about?"

Guine
On the shorter side, am sorry. OTL I was racking my brain for what other updates Val could fill him in on. lol
