It was hardly even six, but it felt so late.

Work today ahd been fine; business was better than always. The trade of antiques was something that people still seemed interested in, but Jett partially wondered if it was because they thought by surrounding themselves with things from the past if things would go back to the way they were.

He wished it was that simple.

He had picked up Chloe from her babysitter and set about getting things ready for dinner. Raven was still out, so he figured he could surprise her with a nice meal. He had turned on the news, intending to watch it while he cooked, but by the time he'd turned around, the channel changed to bright pink ponies singing. Chloe held the remote between her two little hands and stared, fascinated with the cartoon, and Jett didn't have the heart to tell her to turn the channel back.

It was all going to be the same thing anyway, so what did it matter?

Mechanically, Jett prepared some pasta and chicken parmesan; it was his go-to easy meal. Every now and then he would glance over to see what Chloe was doing, but she didn't move the entire time he made dinner. Glancing at a clock, he suspected Raven would be home soon; the table was set and everything was ready—and that meant he could sit down and rest for a few moments.

Moving over to the living room, he flopped down on the couch, and it felt so good to be off his feet. To just lay down. Even if lying face first on a couch wasn't the most ideal resting place, he was falling asleep in less than a minute.

Until he felt little hands on the couch, and then Chloe's weight as she pulled herself up and sat on his back like he was just another cushion. He had thought she might have just been so distracted by the television that she hadn't thought to check before climbing on, but her little giggle as she stuck her fingers into his blonde hair and began fussing with it. He grunted and half-assedly tried to swat at her, but this just made her laugh and wriggle atop of him, fingers still gripping his hair.

He didn't know what she was doing, and he was too tired to stop her.

Raven would come home and make everything okay; Chloe was probably just missing her mother.

So was he.

When life gave you lemons, you made lemonade, and most of the time it seemed that when life gave her lemons, Raven Draven did in fact make lemonade out of them, for they were clearly some very juicy lemons. The past five years had been a constant struggle in some ways, but in others…damn. They had been the best years of her life.

The blonde was driving home from work, a nice office job in some Negaverse owned company that brought in quite a bit of revenue for the family. That was the important thing in all of this. Her family. She didn’t really have that much of an issue of who was on what side, or what the Negaverse was doing at the moment, so long as her husband and daughter were nice and safe during all of it. It was good to keep up appearances on both sides, because she sure as hell did not want any trouble. Though, truth be told, if it were up to her all of the time, she would quit her day job and help out at Princess Ida’s hospital more. That always made her feel like she was doing the ‘right’ thing…rather than just doing the thing.

The blonde pulled into her driveway with a sigh and sat in the car for a few moments before getting out. Hopefully Jett had started on dinner, or at least started on thinking about what to do for dinner, because honestly, she was half tempted to just order a pizza and call it a night.

Raven opened up the front door and walked into the house, removing her shoes on the small front landing. “Hello? I’m home.” It smelled like Jett had started on dinner, and her grumbling stomach said that it was a good thing. She was famished.

Jett had been listening for the click of the front door opening, and the moment he heard it, he breathed a sigh of relief.

Chloe, for as distracted as she seemed, heard it too. She perked up immediately, gripped Jett's hair tight and then flung herself from atop of him so she could charge to the front door. "Mama!" she called, hurling her little arms around her mother's legs. There were many things Chloe could get excited about, but she greeted her parents with such enthusiasm that it could brighten any mood. She had so much love to give, and she never wasted an opportunity. Holding her arms up to Raven, she had pursed her lips and was making overdramatic kissing noises.

Jett took the opportunity to draw in a full breath before sitting up and combing his fingers through his partially braided hair. He stood, flashing a smile to Raven as he waved from across the room. "Welcome home. Dinner's just about ready, if you want to set your stuff down, I'll go set the table."

Raven reached down, scooping up her daughter and hugging her close, planting a slew of kisses all over her little face. “And how’s my little angel? Have you been terrorizing your father like a good little girl?” She laughed and gave Chloe an Eskimo kiss, now walking with her across the living room. “I like the fact that I have dinner ready when I get home, it’s quite a nice thing to come home to.

The blonde looked at Jett and grinned, gently shoving him back down on the couch and tossing the four year old on top of him. Finally, she swooped down herself to kiss him swiftly on the lips. “I hope we’re having something good. It smells good, that’s for sure.”

Being home was the best part of the day by far, and honestly, each time she got home and saw her family all together and happy…it made what she did seem all the more important. “I wish I could just not work and stay here with you guys forever, you know that?” She paused and grinned, sitting squarely on Jett’s chest, laughing. “Now look at you. Your two favorite girls, using their favorite guy as a chair. Love you, pudding.”

Jett grunted even as Chloe erupted in laughter. "I was good!" she said between giggle, squirming from where she was rolling around on Jett so she could try and crawl into her mother's lap.

"Love you," Jett grunted, but wore a sour face, all the same. Something about being pushed over made him huffy, but he couldn't be mad at either of the two. Instead, he just reached around Raven's waist to pull her down with him so he could kiss her again; he wrapped his arms around her and Chloe, embracing them even as they remained on top of him. "I made you a delicious dinner, I will have you know. Like I make you anything but delicious meals. It's not anything fancy, but it's good," he promised, snuggling the two perhaps a bit protectively.

Maybe he just wanted a few seconds to just hold them, to feel them in his arms and know that in this haze of activity and chaos, there was still something solid and good that he could hold on to. Chloe, however, seemed to be more interested in the fact that she was close enough to blow a raspberry in his armpit, and squirmed so that she could do just that.

Jett just grunted again and tried to look at the girl so she could see how unamused he was, but she was laughing and clinging to Raven like a little monkey.

Raven was nothing but smiles, one arm holding Chloe tight against her and the other resting next to Jett’s head, hand playing with his hair. “You are just perfect, that’s all I can say about you, Jett. Every day that I’m with you, I’m more and more glad that we got married. I don’t say it often enough I guess, but I don’t know where I’d be in this world without you. I might have lost my mind by now, either that or would have been killed.” She shrugged, twirling a lock of his blonde hair around her finger and looking at his grumpy face.

Her smile faltered for a moment and a look of deep sadness took over. “Sometimes though, I feel like leaving the city would be a good thing to do…if only for Chloe’s sake…I worry about her every day. If it turns out she’s a senshi and some cat decides to awaken her…”

Her voice trailed off, arm squeezing their daughter a little closer. She swallowed, drawing in a deep breath. “I suppose I should stop thinking things like this and let you get to finishing dinner…” She didn’t often share her fears with her husband, it was just better to ignore them. Ignoring feelings was always the easiest route for her…ignore them until she couldn’t take it anymore.

Jett watched his wife for a moment and then kissed her again. While this wasn't a conversation he wanted to have in front of Chloe, it was rare that Raven ever opened up—especially not like this. He rested his cheek against her and said softly into her ear, "Just because you stop talking about them doesn't mean you stop thinking about them."

He had learned that much, at least, in all these years. "We have a few years before we have to even think about if she's a senshi or something. And even then, we can just tell her she's allergic to cats or something. We'll figure it out. But you don't have to worry. We're doing good so far. Nice, happy, safe."

Of course, the Negaverse was growing every day, and that was problematic in itself, but they'd leave Destiny City when the time was right. He didn't know when it was going to be, but he was prepared. It was just his home—and everyone he cared about was here. His business was here, his life was here.

But Chloe and Raven were more important, and their safety was more important. But he was just too stubborn to leave right now. He still had hope that they could turn the tides. Every day, things just seemed a little more futile.

…But dinner was ready, so that was good.

He gave Raven a squeeze, and maybe copped a feel while she was lying on top of him, before nipping at her ear quickly. "Let's worry more later. I'll pull out some wine and you and I can talk after we tuck Chloe in tonight. You feel like you've got knots again," he added, hands roaming up and down her back. "So we oughta work them out before I let you go back to work."

Raven nodded, doing her best to keep her mouth shut, and not add on the tag line of ‘for now’, to Jett’s statements of reassurance. Because…honestly, She felt as though they were only safe for now, and she felt as though Chloe was only safe for now. It was a terrifying thought and one that plagued her all the time…but there wasn’t much she could do about it, other than wait it out.

She looked at Jett and nodded. “Fine by me.”

Finallly, the blonde gave a smile, letting her husband get up and flopping against the couch. She wasn’t alone in all of this, and honestly, that was what counted more than anything else. Not being alone and having the support of Jett. The support of the person she loved more than anything in the world. It was wonderful to know that no matter what…he would be here.

And honestly, it was that thought that made it easy to keep her head up. Made it easy for her to have hope. Made it wonderful to just come home. Because, this was home, no doubt about that. And so long as she had home…nothing else mattered.
